Copying Macbook iPhoto '09 library to Macbook Air iPhoto '11

Good evening,
I was hoping somebody might be able to help me with a problem I am having with my new Macbook Air.
I initially set up my laptop which automatically created a User Account\. I realise now that I should have used Migration Assistant before I set up my new laptop as this has now resulted in me having 2 User Accounts.
I used Migration Assistant to copy all of the files from my old Macbook to my new Macbook Air.
I can view all of the pictures that came across using Migration Assistant in the Temporary User Account but when I try and move them across to the User Account that I want to permenantly use, the photos become corrupt and I cannot view them all in iPhoto or Preview.
I have tried putting the pictures onto a USB stick from my old computer and putting them onto my new laptop but this too doesn't work and the pictures are corrupt on one user account but not the other.
Another interesting thing to note is that when I swap user accounts on my new Macbook Air, the pictures ARE NOT corrupt on that half, it is just when I move on to my actual user account on this laptop that they do not open.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
MAC OS X 10.8.4

i have a time machine back up of my old imac. i have a external drive backup (mac. ext. journald) of my 09 iphoto library,
Assuming that these backs ups are good - and lets hope they are - pick one, restore it to the Pictures Folder on the new machine and launch iPhoto.
Get iPhoto working. Then think about Aperture. You're making a simple procedure wildly complicated.

It would be better if you could connect the two Macs via a hard wired LAN to copy the library from the Mac Pro to the MacBook.  Wireless connections can have momentary dropouts which could affect the reliable copying of files.
If you do go with Air Drop be sure to open and inspect the copied library closely to confirm it was a successulf copy.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

What happens when you try to open iPhoto on your MacBook Air on the copied iPhoto Library? Do you get an error message? What exactly happens?

  • Merge two iPhoto libraries into an Aperture library for my Macbook Air

    Hey,
I've searched around a bit for this but can't seem to figure out how to to it.
I'm trying to manage my ~140GB photo library on my Macbook Air which has 128GB of HDD.  On top of that, you can imagine that most of that 128GB is filled with system stuff.
My objective is to keep most of my library offline from the Macbook Air, but still keep it all together.
I kinda went "all-in" with iPhoto a few years back to organize my photos so gave up on Aperture.  I'd always wanted to move to Aperture or Lighroom but the migration appeared to be a complete disaster.  Now with "transparent" compatibility it seems like a no brainer to get the best of both worlds.
I thought that Aperture allowed you store files on external hard drives but still have "thumbnail" access to them even when the drive wasn't connected.  Or did I misread that?  (Is that Lightroom?)
Anyway with the new update I thought that I could merge my available iPhoto libraries into one Aperture library that I could always have access to, while offloading the actual photos somehow to an external HDD.
This would be a real winner for me.  It seems tho that an iPhoto library stays an iPhoto library.  So while merging might be helpful for someone with a big hard drive, it's completely useless for me as if anything, I need to split.  Or create more.  Or some other form of adding complexity.
    Any ideas here?

Figured this out on my own.
Make a backup of everything - Aperture seems to require rebuilds and stuff and stories abound of "things going a bit wrong."
Did you make a backup?  If you don't want to or can't, I wouldn't do this.  After all, it's your photos!
Setup your Aperture library on a USB drive.
Update iphoto to the newest version.  Open all your libraries in iPhoto to update them.  This may take awhile depending on library size.
Import whatever iphoto libraries you have to Aperture.  This make take awhile (hours!) - if your stuff is more than say 25 gigs I'd recommend setting it up for overnight.
Once everything is in Aperture - check its all working right.  Then go ahead and maybe make another backup
Then migrate your photos out of the library.  This takes all the originals and stores them elsewhere, called "offline".  Once they're there, you can't move them around, so pick a good spot!!  This also takes forever.
Once this is done your Aperture library should be smaller and just copy it to your MacbookAir
I'm still working on this as it looks like something went funky and I have to rebuild my thumbnails, another overnight processing thing. Like I said, keep a backup   But I have a slimmed down Library on my Macbook Air now which is what I wanted.
This whole thing is kinda a mess and while it's feasible Apple hasn't made it easy.  There's also some crazy stuff Aperture does with thumbnails and "previews" so that they take a bunch of space up (in my case almost as much as my photos), so you might have to work with that.
The guy at Apertureexpert.com is a genius.
Check out this post for more on slimming your Aperture Library:

Edit:As a side-note I put some HTML in my message and it looks like it isn't used in the forum - why does Apple bother having the formatting tools if they don't work?  Kinda like the close-door button on an elevator?
Edit2: Haha it shows up in the answer but not in the normal thread.  Strange, eh?

  • How do I remove pictures in the photo library from my iphone 5? I have a MacBook Air and have transferred pictures to iphoto.

How do I remove pictures in the photo library on my iphone 5?  I need the space to download iOS 7.0.2. I have a MacBook Air and have transferred  pictures from my iphone to iphoto.

Photos in the ?Camera Roll can be deleted by tapping on Select, then selecting the photos to be deleted and finally tapping on Trash.
Photos in albums that were copied to the device by syncing with your computer running iTunes are deleted by syncing again. But before clicking on Apply or Sync deselect the no long wanted albums in iTunes. Finally click on Apply.

  • IPhoto library move to new MacBook air - how ?

I am in the process of moving from my iMac 20inch early 2009, to a MacBook Air mid 2011, I want to move my photo library accross. The IMac is running iPhoto 09 ver 8.1.2, the MacAir is on iPhoto 11. ver 9.4.2.
I have the 2 connected via a network cable but neither can see the other so I cant just drag and drop, any ideas ?
    thanks
    stew

That's a networking issue. Yiou'll need to ask on the Using Mac OS X forum for how to set that up.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this? Thanks.

I want to copy my iMac iPhoto files to a MacBook Air. How do I do this?
Do I drag and drop the iPhoto files or should I use a Thunderbolt cable?
    Thanks.

Connect the two Mac via a LAN or FW cable and Target Disk Mode and copy the iPhoto Library package from your iMac to your  Pictures folder on MBA. All it takes is a drag and drop no matter how you connect the two Macs.
If you have an external HD copy the library to it and reconnect to the MBA and copy again.
If you have a library already on your MBA and it has photos you want to save then rename it before the copy.

  • How do I copy Iphoto pictures from a MacBook Air to a MAC OSX?

How can I most easily move (copy) selected photos from my Macbook Air to my Mac OSX? I do not want to remove the photos from the Mac Book Air.

Export them from iPhoto on the Air
    File -> Export
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
THen copy them to the other machine and import them there.
If you want the edit history and all versions then you'll need to use iPhoto Library Manager

Sorry - we can not see you
what do you have? Version of iPhoto? Of the OS? How is the passport connected to your Mac? What format is the passport (for the iphoto library it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)  )?  The iPhoto library is not and can not be on the cloud (maybe later with the Photos Application)

  • I own a MacBook Pro and an iMac. How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook to the iMac?

I own a 13" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac and I have different iPhoto libraries for each one of them.
How can I copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to the iMac without losing the pictures I have on the iMac library?
Is it possible to merge the libraries?
Can I do this without using an external HDD? (e.g. connecting them through an ethernet cable?)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. By eirher a: renaming one of the Libraries or b: copying them to another folder
    2. If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
    3. Yes.

I have a MacBook Air and recently downloaded the new operating system, 10.10 OSX Yosemite. Since that time, I am no longer able to access my personal ITunes library to add music to IPhoto slideshows.  I put I tunes library on my desktop, as suggested. How do I drag it to the I Photo slideshow?

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Copying saved iphoto library from external hard drive back to Macbook Pro

Please help, I have accidentally managed to permanently delete my iphoto library and by this I mean that I somehow dragged my library into trash and then emptied it.  I don't know how this happend but I quite quickly found out I had done it and shut my computer down.  I have since done a recovery with disk drill and have hopefully recovered most of my photos though I havent had time to look through all the 1000's of photos yet.  I do have a copied version of my library on an external hard drive that I did in 2012 and I have tried to copy this library back to my pictures folder so i at least have my photos up to 2012 back but it is not working.  I have read through some of the threads on here regarding iphoto library back ups and I think the issue might be that the external hard drive is formatted Fat32 and not os extended.
I am hoping someone can help me get this working.  Here are the facts.
    1.  I am running iphoto 11, version 9.2.3 on a macbook pro running os x 10.6.8
    2. The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.  I can open the package contents and see the originals folder with all the yearly folders inside and all the numbered folders inside that with the pictures in them, so I know the pictures are there.
    3.  If I try to copy the library folder over to the pictures folder on the macbook i just get a pop up window saying 'preparing to copy iphoto library' and the scrolling bar but the copy doesn't actually start.
    4.  If I try to open the library through iphoto by holidng down the option key, iphoto tells me that the library has to be upgraded but i am reluctant to upgrade the original copy of the library.  I would prefer to copy it first in case anything goes wrong but then i have the problem above that the copy doesn't work
Thank you in advance for any help.

The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.
Therein lies the problem.  iPhoto libraries need to be stored, placed on a disk formatted OS X Extended (journaled).  The FAT format doesn't support the complexity of an iPhoto library and can, and more often than not, corrupt a library.
    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download the free version of iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed, i.e. in the Pictures folder of your MBP. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary
