Copying Movie DVD

I wish to take a movie DVD  or a Movie BluRay and copy this onto my hard drive… subsequently I want to do the following:
1   Make a complete DVD copy for my own private usage. I am NOT interested in doing anything illegal and my understanding is that in EU it is allowed to copy a DVD for your own usage.
2   Have the ability to build a large DVD library on a very large HDD (several cascaded together) so that I can use this for my home cinema and put the original DVD's (and the backup) in a box somewhere.
3   I want to be able to select  short amount of video / sound track and have that in a format that I can import to Premier Pro (AVI etc)
Does anyone have any suggestions how to do this? Which software do I need to buy or download that achieves the above with 1:1 quality (ie no compression) and removes any encryption in the process.
Many thanks
regards

Hi
I have read the Terms of Use and do NOT see a conflict.…ould you clarify.
I assume that the concern is about the legal position  with respect to encryption, and copyright laws etc. I believe that in Europe we are permitted to make a backup copy of a DVD and place this on a HDD. Also I believe that I can use for personal use on my Mac parts of a movie video as I have legally bought the right to view the movie albeit within the home environment with my family, which is all that I wish to do.
Thanks for clarification.

  • How do i copy movie dvd in terminal

i've found over my many years of using computers how powerful the command line is, especially in unix and linux, so i think this is possible. i also have the same videp in .mp4, and that may be easier to encode to dvd compatible format and burn a dvd. google simply lead me here so i signed in and search had no answers and offered the ask question box.

The main flaw in your logic is thinking that a DVD's format is some kind of computer file. It is not a file, it's a continuous stream of data that computers have to convert to files. The process of ripping a DVD is what a ripping software does to create files that are useable on computers. More software, i.e., iDVD, would be required to convert those files back to a stream of data when creating a playable DVD.

  • How do i copy a dvd movie to my hard drive

Can anyone please tell me how to copy a home made movie from DVD to my hard drive? I'm trying to add it to Apple tv, and it's in a TS format and I can do nothing with it. I mean, when I made it, I made a beginning, which my titles are sitting on. And I want to keep the part that is the beginning, and then be able to choose which title I want to see, but I can't get anything to copy the beginning, only copies the three videos. It's very important to have this beginning, or whatever it's called while I choose a title. I was told to copy the DVD to my hard drive, but it won't copy. Now what?

Does anyone know how to import or copy my DVD movies to itunes? I am trying to import or copy them into itunes so I can watch them on my apple tv?

  • Trying to Copy Home Movie DVDs

I create all of my company's training DVDs. Accordingly, a co-worker has asked me to copy some DVDs of home movies he has. To my knowledge there are no copyright issues.
Is there a way I can copy these using FCE/IDVD or disk utlity?

Here it is on a plate - using Disk Utility:-
    Duplicating a CD or DVD
You can use Disk Utility to quickly copy many types of CDs and DVDs. In the steps below, you'll create a disk image of the disc, and then use that image to burn copies.
Disk Utility cannot create usable copies of discs that use an incompatible format or are copy protected. These include most movie DVDs and audio CDs and some software and data discs.
Insert the CD or DVD disc in your computer's optical drive and select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > "Disk Image from [name of disc]."
Type a name for the disk image.
Choose "compressed" or "read-only" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Choose "compressed" to create a smaller disk image, and choose "read-only" to create a disk image that's quicker to create and open.
    Click Save.
After Disk Utility creates the disk image, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list of disks and volumes, and choose Images > Burn.
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and then click Burn.
You can continue using the disk image to create as many duplicate discs as you need.

  • How d I copy a dvd movie onto a blank dvd?

I just got my i mac and new to apple. I am trying to make a copy of a movie to a blank dvd and I don't know how to do this, can someone please help me or tell me where to look for this help? I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. I't for a christmas present. thanks for your help!!

is it a Christmas present of a commercial dvd? .... or is it something that was authored using iDvd? If it's a copy protected dvd / commercial product then please also read apple's terms of use to the right of this page. If it's a burned dvd which you personally authored you can use apple's disc utility or Toast to make an identical copy.

  • Watching movies copied from DVD

I have the habit of using MacTheRipper to copy movies to my 500GB external hard disk. Can I watch my collection of movies on the new 5G iPod? I clicked the iPod preferences but the video column does not seem to suggest that this is possible...

Here is my step by step guide to using videora.
1st - Download the new Videora and DVD decrypter
    2nd – Install both programs
    3rd - Run DVD Decrypter
4th – Make sure stream processing is selected and ONLY click the first two box under (1 for audio and 1 for video). Make sure IFO mode is checked under settings also. Go to the settings tab and click on IFO and make sure the file split is set to “none”
5th Decrypt the file to the selected directory. I usually just make a folder on my desktop and save it there.
That’s it for DVD Decrypter (It’s a free program ) Get it here.
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/videosoftware/dvd_rippers/dvddecrypter.cfm
Once that is done open Videora.
1st – Click on setup and find the location you want the new mp4 save to. I usually just select the desktop folder again.
2nd – Click on Transcode New Video
3rd – go to the directory where you saved your dvd decrypter file.
4th – I always click on mpeg 4 and select the highest bit rate. I believe its mpeg-/1500/128
5th – Just click start and it should start to transcode. The whole process usually takes about 2 hours so be patient. Sometimes it tends to hang around 9 seconds or less but is still running.
Now – Importing your finished file into Itunes.
The easiest way to import a movie is to create a playlist called “movies”
All you have to do is click on the movie playlist once it is created and click on import file. It should work. If you have any problems or can’t get it to copy try uploading the file directly to your library and then copying it to the playlist directory.
I know this a lot to remember, but it’s the easiest and it has always worked for me. If you have any problems feel free to email me. [email protected]

  • Burning 2nd copy of movie DVD from a DVD?

I have created a (movie) DVD from iDVD and would now like to make a second copy using the DVD (it is no longer in iDVD). How can I do that?

Well, if you've moved some of your original footaga, deleted it, or whatever, the "event" may still show as an event, but there may not be any actual files in it - I am guessing that is what is going on with it being greyed out. Normally you don't move the event, you move the files inside it. You might want to do a general search on your Mac with the name(s) you used (if you remember) to see if they are anywhere. If they are not, well then, the only possibility is the DVD you had made.
In that case, MPEG Streamclip is not on the Roxio website - Roxio makes Toast. MPEG Streamclip is a video converter - you can check it out here:
    http://www.squared5.com/
Make sure you read everything about it. It is free, but in some cases, requires the $20 Apple MPEG 2 Playback Component:

  • Copying my DVD movies

    Hello all,
I have a few old DVDs that I would like to copy onto new DVD's. I have a LaCie external DVD burner.
What is the easiest way to copy the DVD entirely, making it to where I can watch it on my TV and stuff? The DVD's I have are single layer.
    Don't worry, I won't do anything illegal with other people's DVD's, etc.

    Hi Deme,
I don't believe Toast will do it unless it is a burned DVD. DVDs that are bought in the store have Macrovision or CSS (Content - Scrambling System) encryption. In order to decrypt this you will need a special program (like DeCSS). I personally don't think it is appropriate to tell you how to do it or where to find it because people who view this thread might use the information to make illegal copies. This is my personal opinion; I have no authority, so I can't say that it is not allowed. You should search the internet for common words or phrases that are related to you topic. If you do find something; make sure its for Mac OS X.

  • Looking for app or technique to record to dvd individual chapters from a  movie dvd i own, not related to idvd or iMovie?

looking for an app or technique to record to dvd individual chapyers from a movie dvd that i own?  not related to  idvd or imovie

Is this a commercial copy-protected DVD or a home-made video DVD?

  • Is it possible to copy a DVD to my itouch?

    If so, how?

Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer and you can then sync it to your iPad.
    Regards.

  • Copying home DVDs to hard drive

I have a DVD recorder hooked up to a TV. I'd like to copy a DVD from that machine onto my Macbook Pro's hard drive so that I can watch the contents without having to carry the disk around with me. Can I do that with QuickTime Pro?
The DVDs play fine using the DVD Player software, but I can't see any way to copy the contents to my computer.
    Thanks!

I'd like to copy a DVD from that machine onto my Macbook Pro's hard drive so that I can watch the contents without having to carry the disk around with me. Can I do that with QuickTime Pro?
No, QT Pro is not required.
The DVDs play fine using the DVD Player software, but I can't see any way to copy the contents to my computer.
Simply insert the DVD and use the Finder to copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to the HDD. When you want to play the movie open the Apple DVD Player, select the "Open DVD Media" File menu option, navigate to the Video_TS folder, select it, and play it. If you prefer a file the operates like a DVD, download DVD Imager, Drop the VIDEO_TS folder on it, give it a name and it will create a DVD image file. Double clicking the image file will mount the data as if you had inserted your DVD. If you computer is set to open the DVD Player when a DVD is inserted, then opening the image file will open the DVD Player also.

Is it possible to copy a DVD into iTunes and then upload it to my iPad? Is there any way of doing this?

Sure, just use Handbrake to encode the DVD movie into a format that is playable on iTunes and on your iPad:

Once the encoding is complete, move the movie file from your desktop into iTunes and then sync your iPad.  Presto, the movie is on your iPad!
