"Copying Music failed. The filename was too long or invalid."

I've been trying to 'consolidate library' inorder to get all my music held and managed under Itunes so I can delete it from other places on my computer & avoid holding multiple copies (in line with Chris CA's guidance in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2812666?start=0&tstart=0)
All goes well until I get to the 'consolidate library' step, it starts off copying files & seems to be going alright, then at some point I get the error message :"Copying Music failed. The filename was too long or invalid."
This error message doesn't help me much as I've no idea where to go from here. I've tried consolidating library twice now and got the same message each time.
I'm assuming there must be some way to either fix it or identify the file causing the issue?
Thanks

Unconsolidated should now give you a much shorter list, presumably the difficult track will be either first or last in this list...
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background. You'll probably have to disable the progress bar again.
It only works on files connected to iTunes that have identical tag info. If you're not certain it might pay to make sure first using iTunes Folder Watch to scan for files that are in the media folder but not in the library. It also has a "scan for dead tracks on startup" option with detects missing files.

  • Cannot 'Consolidate Library" : Copying music failed , the file name was too

    Hi,
I am trying to move all the music library to my new computer ( this is my 3rd time of changing my PC). I tried to consolidate the library... but the message was
Copying music failed , the file name was invalid or too long"
I already moved the Itunes to my new pc, but my new Itunes cannot "Relocating my file"
    Please help me

To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file
copied - and then go back to your source, and go to
the next one - it should be that one.
I just wanted to add that I had the same issue (failure to finish copying and "invalid or too long" error msg) and at first didn't see how looking for the last file copied would work since iTunes is copying into folders.
    Duh.
Reverse sort by date modified (newest folder at the top of the list) then drill down to the folder containing the files being copied. Voila. There was the (missing) culprit, and I knew which file to rename in the source folder.
Thanks for the kick in the brain pan.

  • Mail server cannot use certificate because.. the filename is too long ?

    Hi,
For some reasons, yesterday, I created a new certificate on our server (XServe with Mac OSX Server 10.6.2) and I assigned this certificate to the mail server. Since then, we are not able to connect to our mail server. We receive an error saying the server cannot open a connection on port 993.
I looked at the mail access log and I think I might have found the cause:
    Jan 7 09:20:25 xs1 dovecot[1944]: Fatal: sslcafile: Can't use /etc/certificates/LemieuxBedard.com.264472D0EC029B3194A4B779D2187278189E8352.ch ain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem Bedard.48DFB4D5FA4786D77DEF02C72591002CC865D5E1.chain.pem: File name too long
I don't understand why the name is too long since the previous certificate had a name even longer. Is this a bug that should be corrected on the next update or have-I indeed done something wrong? Right now, I disable the certificate on the mail server and it works. However, I'd really like to use the certificate.
    Thanks for any help.

No, you didn't do anything wrong, JeanPhilippe. I'm right there with you. There's even another thread on this issue:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10808126>
I had the same problem: IMAP & POP services would not launch using SSL. Finally got it resolved today. It had nothing to do with certificates and their names, or creating them in openssl, and everything to do with a botched dovecot.conf file, courtesy of Server Admin.
It appears that every time I changed the certificate for IMAP & POP SSL in Server Admin, it appended the new selection to the dovecot.conf file on 3 separate lines. The result was an unhealthy list of every certificate file Server Admin had ever been pointed to for this service.
After making a backup, I edited the file (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) down to the single cert file I wanted it to use. It happened to be first in the list, FWIW.
If you want to duplicate this, look for the lines beginning with:
    "sslcertfile"
    "sslkeyfile"
    "sslcafile"
Obviously you need to be careful in there. But I did not even have to bounce the service before it took my changes. Thankfully, Server Admin did not overwrite my edits (which I've seen happen with manual config of other services, such as the iChat service.)
Good luck, and let me know if I can provide more detail.

  • HT3728 I need to reset the name of the network because the name was too long.  What do you suggest?

I have a fully functioning Air Port Express.  The only item which does not cooperate is my printer.  When I insert the network name, all letters are on the same line except for one letter.  I think this is causing the problem.  I think if I shortened the network name that would solve my problem.  Any suggestions?

Remove any spaces that you have in the name at this time. Otherwise, shorten the actual name to fit the requirements. "Wireless" certainly works if you are not sure how to name the network.

  • Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long.

I went to consolidate my music, but when it got about 2/3 of the way through, it stopped with the error message, "Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long." I don't know which file it is referring to. How do I find this out?
I needed to cosolidate so I could backup the entire library to DVD. Now I'm left with two partially complete libraries with many duplicates.

To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file

  • "Copying Music Failed - File name invalid or too long."  HELP!

I desperately need to consolidate my music before my computer says goodbye for all eternity. It seems I can't consolidate my music because apparently, the file name is too long or invalid. I even got this program that was supposed to help me seek out the ones with too long file names. So I deleted those songs and it still won't work. And after I got the new iTunes the other day, I set it to add all new songs automatically into the iTunes Music Folder. However, it seems my iTunes is a little screwed up, because whenever I add a song with a long file name, it automatically shortens it down. For example if I add a song with the named "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Ooo, Baby Baby", which is obviously a very long name, it will shorten it down to about the first 4 or 5 words. I naturally shorten it down to just "Ooo, Baby Baby" myself, but I'm thinkin this whole error may have something to do with the fact that the library won't consolidate.
I'm in desperate need of help here - come to my rescue, please!

Well, aren't you lucky I signed in tonight? Sometimes you just have to be patient and wait until a person who might know an answer shows up.
I have had problems with Consolidate too, and getting that stupid error message when the file name was not too long.
The consolidate function starts copying things over by Date Added, with the older ones getting copied first. First in, first out.
What I finally had to do was look in Windows Explorer for the target (new) drive and see the last file that was successfully copied. Let's call it Carole King.
Then I went into iTunes and sorted by Date Added to see the file just AFTER the Carole King file. In my case, it was La Bohème and iTunes had filed it in the Compilations folder. I selected all the tracks and unchecked the Compilations box. This made iTunes move it out of the Compilations folder
The Consolidate worked after I moved that file.

  • Error "COPYING MUSIC FAILED. The disk could not be read from or written to"

After following the procedurest to move the iTunes music, the computer started whirring away, happily copying and consolidating all the song files to the new target folder.
After copying 68gigs of 130gigs perfectly, it stopped dead and the following iTunes error message appeared:
"COPYING MUSIC FAILED. THE DISK COULD NOT BE READ FROM OR WRITTEN TO"
I am copying to an external LaCie 500g hard disk, and the current music file is split between folders on the laptop and folders and a 2nd external LaCie Hard disk. It did not appear to have any problems copying and consolidating files from both locations, until the error message showed up.
    How can I solve this?
I really need to consolidate this music file.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    OK I figured it out!
It was a dodgy file....I sorted the file folders by date, and as it turned out within the "compilations" folder there was a CD where only about half the tracks seemed to have been copied over. Could not have identified this simply from the time indicated on the finder folder sort, because there were several CDs copied over in the that same minute.
I went back to the original itunes folder, deleted all the files from that CD in itunes, then also deleted all those files from the original disk and the target disk.
Tried the "consolidate library" again, and it completed nicely. 200megs of music and videos.
Very happy to solve this problem after 3 weeks.

  • Copying Music failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.

I just added a server to my home network. It's called "DELLSEVER" and is networked via TCP/IP on a Windows Network. I can copy files to and from it no problem. I created a shared folder on the server with public read/write access and no password called "Music".
I wanted to move my iTunes music folder (~110GB) to the server's Music folder.
I followed the instruction found on this forum and went into iTunes(6.0.4.2) preferences -> Advenced -> Itunes Music folder location -> clicked Change -> selected the directory from the available list -> clicked ok.
Under "iTunes Music folder location" it now says "\\DELLSERVER\Music\iTunes", and clicked ok to close the preferences.
I then clicked Advanced -> Consolidate Library -> Consolidate.
I then get the error "Copying Music failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I then tried to manually copy my library from dragging the folded from my PC to the server. That worked fine, but I can't get iTunes to use the server's copy of the music, it keeps going back to my PC's copy.
Please help. I've only got about 30 Meg left on my PC's drive with iTunes and need to relocate my music to the server's drives.
And if it matters, I am Administrator on both my PC and the server.
I also tried de-authorizing my PC just in case. Made no difference.

Thanks Katrina. Mapping the folder to a drive letter allowed iTunes to start copying the music across.
Unfortuntely iTunes didn't notice that I manually copied the files across earlier, so it's overwriting them. I'm about two hours into the transfer with about another hour to go, but it looks like it's going to work.

  • Copying music failed, unknown error (-50)

Trying to move my library from one external hard drive to another external hard drive. Did it by going to Preferences-Advanced and changing the drive/folder location and then going to Advanced-Consolidate Library. All seemed to be going ok and then the process stopped (about 40% done) with the error "copying music failed. An unknown error has occurred (-50)". I've searched the forums and Google without luck. There was some mention of filenames. However, the songs with the longest pathname made it over to the new drive just fine. So it's not length. A quick check in iTunes using "GetInfo" showed some songs on the old drive and some on the new drive. At what point do these get updated in the consolidation process? As they are getting copied (one song at a time) or all songs before the copying process starts???
For the moment, I have changed the drive back and consolidated the library back to the original drive and that seems to be ok. Still want to move the library but don't know what caused it to stop the first time so thought I'd ask here before trying again.
    Thanks.

    hi usablues!
hmmmm. i've been seeing this particular kind of "anomalous" (-50) off and on since 4.9.
this is experimental. but we've been seeing different sorts of strange unknown error codes under similar circumstances when antivirus or antispyware is interfering with itunes' ability to read the library files.
... so ... can you get a consolidate to go through properly if you have your antivirus/antispyware switched off?
    love, b

  • Problem consolidating to NAS "Copying Music Failed"

Can someone offer advice on how to solve a problem with iTunes for Windows? I get an error message when I consolidate. Error is "Copying Music failed. The disk could not read from or written to". I have a laptop and the HD is full. I bought an Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ 1TB. I have copied files to the NAS without any problem. I followed Apple's Written Help Instructions to "Moving your ITunes folder". I followed the instructions and got the error above "Copying Music Failed...". Preferences->Advanced..Itunes Music Folder Location...change...<\\NAS..
Itunes Music>. Also enabled Keep Itunes Music folder organized. Disabled Copy Files to Itunes Music..... Then went to Menu Advanced->Consolidate Library. I then get the error "Copying Music failed. The disk could not read from or written to". The NAS from Infrant was simple to install on my home LAN. There must be something simple that I am missing. The NAS was easy to install. And I have been transferring Word/Excel/etc files like crazy to the NAS to store. I cannot figure out why the instructions from Apple do not work? I cannot figure out why the consolidate Library function fails. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have found with network storage that mapping a drive letter to a folder on the network storage drive works with iTunes. Couldn't get iTunes to access network storage without mapping drive.

  • How do I split a project in IMovie into two projects?  When I try to burn a DVD RDL in IDVD, it tells me the movie is too long.

I am running  IMovie 8.0.6.  (OS X Mavericks 10.9.5) How do I split a project into two projects?  When I share it in Media Browser to IDVD, and try to burn a DVD- RDL, it keeps telling me the project is too long.  Do I split it in IDVD and how do I do that?

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

  • Consolidation error "Copying Music failed. An unknown error occurred (-51)

I want to Consolidate my large music library and add all of the songs from my MacBook to my new, much larger iTunes music folder, which is on a Buffalo Terastation NAS, so that I may easily back them up. Error # 51 means that the Buffalo Terastation NAS is unreachable on your local network.

Look at this Apple Article about how to Consolidate the iTunes Library ... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If you follow the steps in this link I think that it should work. But first you must setup the Hard Drives as a 'Bootable GUID Partition Table' with 'Owners' & 'Journaling' Enabled in order to retain the iTunes users permissions.
