Copying my music from one Mac to another

I have all my music on my Mac Pro iTunes and I would like to copy it all to my MBP iTunes.
They are both running Leopard.
Can anyone please advise on the simplest way to do this?
Thank you.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your othercomputer is to network the two over ethernet and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them:
Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Mac
OS X 10.5 - Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
An alternative method would be to use a utility that syncronises iTunes libraries across computers. You could begin your research in tht direction by having a look at these for instance:
TuneRanger
SuperSync

  • Problems with home sharing - copy & paste music from one mac to another mac

Using home sharing and two macbook pros, I am trying to copy and paste music from one of the mac pros to the other.  Sharing appear to be set up properly and the mac allows me to highlight the music i want to copy and then drag it to the music folder . The mac then indicates that fies are being copied...for example, it now says "copying 1 of 10".  However, it never goes beyond this.  After a while I click the "x" and start over, but nothing ever happens.  Anyone have ideas?  This shouldn't be that difficult.

    no.
for home sharing to work, all machines need to be on the same network.

  • Can I copy my iTunes from one Mac to another to a distant location?

I have 2 homes one in NYC and the other in upstate NY. I have multiple Macs at both locations all using Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes(9). I only have 1 iTunes library I maintain at the upstate location and have to bring my iPod to the NYC location to play my music. Can I not copy my iTunes library to the NYC location using Home Sharing or using some other method? I often forget to bring my iPod and am left without my music.

Since I had a problem with my Mac's drive that suddenly failed (I am able to read ONLY), I replaced the internal HD with my emergency HD that I had backedup a few months before. I would like to know if there's a way to copy my settings from one mac to another? Is there a specific folder for all apps or do I have to find out each and every single file for each app?
    I need the settings for
    System (view, font, color,)
    Finder (view, etc)
iTunes (that include all library, playlists, etc),
    Firefox (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Safari (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Address Book (contacts)
Thuderbird (emails accounts, contacts, passwords, etc)
Stickies (stickies on the dock - i have info on there unsaved)
    Filezilla (FTP infos)
    Would appreciate.
    Thnx.
All that info is found in your user/library folder, I just did a 60 machine rollout and copied all those settings from user/library, just be forewarned that if you upgrade software those setting will not take on the machine, for example Adobe CS 3,4 will not usable by CS5.  let us know if you need more help.  Also make sure you copy most of your preferences in the user/library/prefences folder.
Note: If you are using an identical backup with all apps and user settings, you can just copy all folders from user to your new home folder.  Remember that only if the image or backup is identical to your production OS.

  • How To Copy Selected Music From One Library to Another?

What is the best way to copy selected music from one library to another?
I have a big and growing iTunes library -- 33,000 songs.
A year ago I copied my library to my daughter's new iMac.  Now, a year later, I'm off to visit her and wonder how best to update her library.  In the past year I have added a number of items to my library and I'm sure she has done the same -- some might be the same but many will be different.
How do I update her library with the new things I've added in the past year but not wipe out things she had added or duplicate when we each have a song?
I can load any / all of my stuff on an external HD and take that to plug in to her computer.  Then what?  I want to avoid duplicates and make sure I get stuff like album artwork.
I'm running iTune 10.4 on an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 -- my daughter will have the same iTunes and OS X once we update her software.
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks

If you're sharing the same Apple ID and all your songs are from the iTunes Store, it's easy:
In iTunes on your computer, go to File->Preferences->Store and check the box next to MUSIC under AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS.
You should also read this article, the section titled TO DOWNLOAD PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED APPS, BOOKS, MUSIC, OR TV SHOWS TO YOUR COMPUTER:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
You could also use an rsync utility such as backuplist+ to perform a 2-way sync of the files in your two libraries while your computers are connected via FireWire with one of them in FireWire Target Disk Mode, or from your external hard drive with your daughter's computer and then to yours again. After that, you'll need to use iTunes on each computer to update its library with the new files:
    http://rdutoit.home.comcast.net/~rdutoit/pub/robsoft/pages/backup.html
This last would also be the preferred method if you have authorized each other's computers for media purchased with each other's Apple IDs (i.e. you are not sharing the same Apple ID), or if you have music from sources other than the iTunes Store. Most likely, though, music from sources other than the iTunes Store would not be legal to copy in this way for this purpose, although there is probably no technical impediment.

I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.

This should give you some good insight, I'd probably store them on an External HD on the old machine and then just drag and drop to the new machine.

  • Stream music from one mac to another

How do you stream music in itunes from one mac to another?

Home Sharing enables you to stream or transfer music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more among up to five authorized computers in your household.

  • Copy iTunes Music from one User to Another, Same iMac

I'm running OS X 10.7, iTunes 10, and I want to copy  (not share, _copy_) my iTunes music library from one user to another on the same iMac.
Please don't give me a solutioon that works on your OS X 10.5 or 10.6 software as 10.7 seems to be quite different and those answers do not work.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/Shared/ as the path, drag it to that folder, log in from the other account, and copy it from there. Alternatively, log in from the other account, open the first account's home folder, drag it to the desired location, and authenticate when prompted.

  • Can I Copy CS3 Apps from One Mac to Another and Make them Work?

First off, I KNOW how this sounds at first blush. I am NOT trying to violate the EULA. I have legitimate serials for Creative Suite 3.
HOWEVER I'm in a position where my new Mac will not allow me to install CS3 from the disks or DMGs made from them. It's a long story, one that has Apple support stumped and me up against writing deadlines for which I need CS3 and CS4 running concurrently.
I'm replacing one Mac (a Powerbook G4 10.4.11) with another (10.6.2). Migration assistant fails. Install disks fail. DMGs from install disks fail. All works on the G4, not on the 10.6.
SO, is there a way I can COPY (or move) the installed and functioning CS3 apps from the G4 to the new 10.6 system via Ethernet (or USB)? I mean, other than the application folders and the prefs, what would I have to copy/move? Is it even possible? I don't need to transfer the serial and activation; I can re-enter my serial and re-activate the software once on the new computer; I just need to get it working via copy/move on the new Mac.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Frak. I was afraid of that. That means I need to keep the old Mac up just for screenshots and testing techniques in my articles for the next year to 18 months. I'd better go buy a second desk to keep all these computers handy.
    Thanks, Michael.

  • How do I copy a playlist from one Mac to another?

I just bought a MacBook and have transferred some of my music from my iTunes folder on my older MacPro using wireless file sharing. How do I copy the numerous playlists I've got on my older computer? Do I copy the iTunes library file?
I've got the new aluminum MacBook which has no FireWire for some inexplicable reason and so can not connect to my MacPro as an external hard drive.
    Thanks

I guess I could do that if it's the only way and then delete the music I don't want on my laptop. The problem is that I've got over 35 GB of music in my MacPro's iTunes folder and I really only want to copy a fraction of that to my MacBook. Are there any other options? If not, I'll go ahead with your recommendation.
    Thanks

  • How do I copy an album from one mac to another without duplicating the photos

When I try to copy an album of photos from my wife's mac to mine, I just want the "album". I already have the photos. But I want to have that subset in the order she put them in. However, all I can figure out to do is "copy" that album, importing all the photos again as duplicates, then taking Last Import and making the album from that. And it doesn't necessarily preserve the order that the photos were sorted into. Surely there's an easier way. Is there?

You can not have an album with out haveing the photos so it is impossible to do this
You can use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move albums between iPhoto libraries

  • Publish Error after copying domain file from one mac to another

    Hello there,
so here is the problem: I have had iweb installed on a MBP, and a website up and running. Now that I just bought an iMac I wanted to transfer all the iWeb over to the iMac and make it the main machine. I was doing all the transfer work manually rather than using the migration assistant or time machine.
I have copied the domain file in the iWeb directory over to the iMac. iWeb starts and displays all the pages and sites normally, but when I try to publish I get the " Publish Error. An unknown error occurred" message.
On the MBP everything was/is working normally.
I have tried to copy the same file again, no change. I have deleted the preference file, no change.
I have tried publishing to a local folder, and get the same error message.
Does anybody have an idea how to get this fixed? I browsed through the discussions here but couldn't find anything regarding this specific issue.
    cheers
    grani

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    3 - reboot.
4 - launch iWeb and try to publish.
    If that doesn't help continue:
5 - move the domain file from your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
6 - launch iWeb, create a new test site and save.
7 - go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
8 - move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
9 - launch iWeb and try again.
