Copying original domain.sites2 file difficulty

I am trying to copy the domain.sites2 file on my iMac in the USA where I started my website on iWeb.
I apparently need to place it in my iWeb site on my MacBook Pro where I am now in China.
Through "back to my Mac" I am connected to my iMac....got all the way to my domain.sites2 file (took about 45 minutes) and dragged the
file to my thumbdrive.  It immediately pops a little screen and says "preparing to copy to "my thumbdrive" then the long blue screw action and under that it says "preparing to copy domain".  It's been at that point for over an hour and this is the second time I have done that.  Yesterday I spent all day trying to get it to copy to iDisk.
Any secrets to get this domain.sites2 file copied so I can use it to get the work on my blog to publish on my MBPro?
Thanks

Thank you Wyodor
I will try copying to a rw disk. Would you do that from "back to my Mac"
Right now I am in logmein looking at my original computer screen trying to copy the original domain.sites2 file I created my website with.  I am trying to copy it to iDisk....although it looks like it will be painfully slow.
Another question...would I not have transferred the original domain.sites2 file when I loaded my MBPro with my time machine backup from my iMac??
Of course that file does not exist on my MBPro anymore because I started my blog using whatever I copied from my iMac to my MBPro when I started adding my blog and blog entries...  But my first few blog entries published ok but now the blog/website won't ever publish. I do know both versions of iWeb are the same.
I've read just about every post and recommendation on here but am just about to give up trying to publish.
When at my original files through "back to my Mac" I tried to drag/copy the file to a thumb drive but it just kept spinning for hours. I will try one of your methods...I'll try a rw disk (from "burn disk"?)or maybe the DiskImage...if I can figure out how to do that....I'm not used to copying much except to USB (thumb)...so a little unsure of myself...

• Saving the domain file in iWeb fails. I have tried deleting the cache. I see that the file uploads to iWeb but the message is that the domain.sites2 file can't be saved. I note that duplicating the domain gives me different size files. Ideas?

I have read other discussions and my problem persists.
I note that duplicating the domain file user/library/applications support/iweb/domain.sites2 gives me files of varying sizes (I'm at around 200Mb).
I tried rebuilding the cache ../library/caches/com.apple.iweb - no change
I found a note to delete also a preference file ../library/prefernces/com.apple.iweb   bt found more than one (.../plist and .../plist.lockfile) so ducked that.
The website seems to update out of sync - as if I have a domain file elsewhere (in the cloud?) that is saving on my drive later - that doesn't make sense of the comments I have read. My domain.sites2 file is stadily growing - so one interpretation is that files are being saved and the error message is the error.
This has been a problem for about a year as I have tried many alternative solutions. I;m looking fro somethign substantially different.
One repeated situation is that I write a new page and upload it. I get the usual error message. I visit the site and there is the new page. My domain (on my machine) shows no new work, so I copy the stuff on the web back to my domain and steadily the file increases in size. Bewildering.
Everything is as up to date as it can be. I don't reboot very often as my machine is rarley off.
I'm looking for different ideas and approaches.....

Although some of the following will be a repeat but try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
launch iWeb and try again.

• Transfer iWeb contents to another computer & merging Domain.sites2 files.

Hi
I've a MacBook Pro with one set of iWeb files which are published. I've an older MacBook which contains a different set of iWeb files, which are also published. I want to consolidate both these set of iWeb files on one computer. I was reading that I need to transfer the Domain.sites2 file from one computer to the other.
When I do so, I don't want to clobber the original set of contents. How do I merge two Domain.sites2 files?
thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How do I merge two Domain.sites2 files?
You can do that with iWebSites. Just remember to make backup copies of both domain files to be merged in case the merge doesn't go as advertised. I've merged sites before with no problem.

• Iweb not opening domain.sites2 file

Hi
One of the people I support is having a problem with iweb. She went and updated her site the other day. The next day, when she opened iweb to work on it some more, it didn't recognize her domain.sites2 file. It actually opened as if the site never existed. After I pulled the domain.sites2 icon to my desktop, I dragged it directly onto iweb. No good, is still opened up as if it were creating a new site. So, I opened up the sites icon so I could see everything in it, and all of the persons data is in there (pictures, forms, etc). When I copy the data out of that domain.sites2 folder and put it in another and rename it, it does the same thing (tries to open as if the data doesn't exist).
Anyway, what caused this? More importantly, how do I get it to work again? She may have a functional backup (I have to go onto our servers and take a look-the computers back up automatically), but if for some reason it overwrote a previous copy, this may be all I have to work with.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Often an interruption of some sort, iWeb crash, computer crash, while iWeb is writing to it's files in the domain package. The best solution is to have a current backup of the domain file. That can be had by using Time Machine (hourly backups) or use a 3rd party backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup, i.e. copy only those recent new or changed files) on a more frequent basis.
There was a new posting today about damaged domain files and the OP narrowed it down to a file in the package. You can read about it here: CRASHED and LOST EVERYTHING due to Library/App Supp/iWeb/index.xml.gz

• My Domain.sites2 file is MIA

I did a search in spotlight and nothing.
The iWeb folder in Application Support < Library < ...
is totally empty.
I think I may have deleted it.
Yesterday, I decided to start over, so I duplicated my site and it's pages, then I deleted the first one on the list.
Could that be the reason I have no Doman.sites2 file?
In any case, I do have it on the server and I have the local folder in my computer that I published the site to just before I uploaded it to the server.
Is there a way I can retreive the Domain.sites2 file
from any of these things?
Better question is: is there another way to open my site in iWeb, without a Domain.sites2 file, but having the published folder in my local computer, and it is already on the server.
thanks!!
I just need to make a couple of changes.

Ahhh! I see how it works.
okay,i'll do that, copy the domain and paste in the iWeb folder,
then make a copy everytime I save changes.
I have made copies of this stinkin Domain file everywhere!
including a two flashdrives. I do have TimeCapsule, but I have it set up to back up only my system hardrive. So when I went into TC to look for the domain file in the iWeb folder, it was empty... no domain file in my boot drive. It was in my external drive all along although I don't remember putting it there.
One of these days, this will all make sense
thanks for the help!!

• Recovering iWeb's "Domains.sites2" file

Hi, my situation follows:
two days ago, I had a kernel panic. Fortunately, I had Windows XP installed with Boot Camp. I started it, installed MacDrive 7 and moved the entire HFS+ partition containing my OS X files into an external, FireWire 400, 500 GB drive. The files were moved succesfully, so I was able to initialize the OS X partition, reinstall OS X 10.4.8, update all the programs and began restoring the files.
Now, what's most important to me is my website, which is made with iWeb.
The kernel panic occurred immediately after iLife '08 installation. In fact, the system detected there were updates available, but some running applications (VLC and Messenger) interfered with the update to OS X 10.4.11 . I was asked to reboot the system, but then it was impossible to login, because the rotating palettes would never stop rotating.
I then booted with OS X 10.4.8 install disk. Boot Disk said the OS X partition was containing OS X 10.4.11, but it was not true, because the update to 10.4.11 had failed previously to reboot. So I made my mistake: I tried to restore the boot image from OS X 10.4.8 install disk to OS X false-10.4.11 hard disk partition. The process did not fail; however, when rebooted I had a kernel panic.
As I said, I have not lost even a single file, because MacDrive was able to move all the data to an external disk.
Now I'm restoring it.
The problem comes with iWeb. When the infamous update to OS X 10.4.11 occurred, iWeb was succesfully updated to version 2.0.2 (iLife '08), while my website was last opened with iWeb '08 original (with no updates).
Now, if I try to move the Domains.sites2 file to /Users/mylogin/Library/Application Support/iWeb and start iWeb '08 2.0.2, it recognizes the web pages, but they are all grey, exactly as they do not exist.
Unfortunately, I am beginning to think this is the problem: the last time I had modified my webpages with iWeb was with iWeb 2.0, and during the update it was updated to 2.0.2 . If I would have re-opened them with 2.0.2 version, the Domains.sites2 file would have been updated too.
So, now I have iWeb 2.0.2 and a Domains.sites2 file which was last modified with version 2.0, so I'm thinking: is this the problem? Is iWeb not recognizing the file because it was opened with an older version ?
Or:
*are there any iWeb files other than in /Users/mylogin/Library/Application Support/iWeb ???*
If so, please tell me so I will be able to restore all the files.
Thank you for your support,
Tyrexionibus

I'm guessing you have answered this by now, but no there are no other files

• I have multiple "domain".sites2 files.

I built a few simple sites maybe 5-6 years ago, and was unconfortable with keeping them in one iWeb arvhive. So I figured out a way to save and open sites from muliple archives. Now, when I try to open a "old" iWeb archive only the most recently created opens, and not the "old". Back then I figured out a solution to this - but I don't recall what it was and everything I tried does not help. Happy for any hints.

The following is my take on the issue.  My app, iWeb Switch Domain, is the same as Roddy's app. They are the  same script but with a different name.
Note the warning at the end of my post below. If you're not careful you could lose a domain file.
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

• Can't Open the domain.sites2 file I Want To!

I'm tearing my hair out here!
I had multiple websites within iweb 08, but using it as more of a publishing facility and creating graphic adverts and stuff. Then I decided to make a website, which is where it all went to pot.
I hadn't realised that the domain.sites2 file contained all the information for the multiple sites.
What happened:
I downloaded iwebsites to separate sites and once managed to upload the website I wanted to publish to my .mac account. Then I successfully retrieved the old websites again fine.
When I tried this process again, everything was lost other than the published site. I had a back up of the domain.sites2 file on an external hard drive which I am now trying to get to open in iweb! And it won't.
I have gone through the process of deleting the iweb preferences and opening a blank site, saving it and replacing it with the old domains file with the content I want to open, but it always reverts to a new site (asking me to pick a template) or the last saved 'test' site.
I really don't want to lose everything I have been working on for the last 2 years! Does anyone have any ideas why the domain file I want to open isn't showing the correct content?
I would appreciate any help! Thanks

Yep I've tried that but it reverts back to the last saved test site. When I look at the package contents the pics and other items from all my sites are there but will not open as before!

• Help-moved Domain.sites2 file, lost content wife's site

Hi,
This is about my wife's MAC so it is even more serious because it's my fault. I'm her IT guy but I don't know her iWeb projects very well. I helped her get started and once her site launched a year ago, all has been great and I stopped studying/learning iWeb. Now I'm in trouble.
So asked for help creating/publish multiple websites from iWeb09. (personal and work) Don't know if she'll publish as sub/site on her mobileMe or host the second site elsewhere. I read the forums this morning about iWeb's use of the Domain.site file. I read that if you move the file from it's default location (lib/app support/iweb) to another level in the Finder, then iWeb will open to a new site template and no longer default to her personal site. Okay, got it. Did it. Created a folder called "iWeb Sites" in the Library/Sites folder. Created folders for her sep sites, work / personal.
Then I moved Domain.sites2 to the new "personal" folder. Launched iWeb from there to check her site. All good - still there. Quit iWeb
Re-launched iWeb from dock, saw it create a new Domain.sites2 file in lib/app support/iWeb. I chose "New Site" in the menu. After it appeared, I deleted her Site icon (and the files under it went away). Okay, good, now this Domain.sites2 file is ready to be her new work website. Quit, and movd this Domain file from it's default (lib/app supp/iWeb to the new "work" folder.
Now the problem...(if you don't already see it coming). I went back to open her personal site to make sure it would open directly from the new "personal" folder - it's new home. It opened with NONE of her site info. Totally new site - all her content gone.
First thing I did was quit. Opened my ftp (cyberduck) went to her mobileme account and downloaded the entire "SITES" folder.
Now what? Where did I go wrong and how do I fix it?
Thank you!

The first time you open iWeb it creates a Domain.sites2 file in :
~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
where ~ is your Home directory.
Anything you do in iWeb is stored in that file.
When you move the file to another location, for reasons only you know, iWeb cannot find it and offers you to find the Domain file or create a new one.
You can also double click the file you moved to open it in iWeb.
iWeb will remember it the next time you open iWeb.
If you start moving files around and creating folders for whatever reason and lost track, then retrace your steps to the point where it went wrong. If in the process you created multiple copies, then open them one by one and see what's inside.
You can have multiple domain files, I have 57, for any reason you desire. They are not linked and are fully independent of each other. It's up to you how you organize these different files and remember what they are for.
If you publish the Sites in each domain file to MobileMe, then the last one published will be the default Sites. If Sites in different domain files have the same name then it is surprise, surprise which page will be deleted, updated or added on the server.
Downloading the Sites (the HomePage folder) or the Web/Sites folder (where iWeb publishes the pages) from iDisk is useless in this respect, since it does not contain anything usefull. You cannot import webpages back into iWeb.

• IWeb domain.sites2 file?

the domain.sites2 file is not in the HD/User/Library/Application Support/iweb folder - I've searched using spotlight and can't find it - suggestions?

It will be there but might be called just domain or domain.sites. It is not always domain.sites2.
It depends whether you have created and saved any sites in iWeb as to whether it will be there too. I assume that you have?

• Files in MobileME needed back in domain.sites2 file to update in iweb

I have the files in the mobileme - MANY files but not one named domain.sites2 - How do I repackage to have them work in iweb again?

If you didn't find your domain file in the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder the download Find File to search for domain.sites2 on your HD. It will search areas that Spotlight can't.
If you don't have that domain file any more and don't have a backup (read Time Machine or the like) you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch. Chapter 2.3 of tje iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.

• The document "Domain.Sites2" could not be opened

I upgraded to iWeb '08 last week, and it has been working OK since then.
My '06 sites were transfered to '08 sites - everything ok.
Until last night, when I tried to open iWeb '08 again...
I got this error message:

and

What I tried:
copy old domain.sites2 file to another folder
restart iWeb and created a new site.
iWeb worked fine with a new site.
When I replaced the package contents of the new domain.sites2 with the old and restarted iWeb - still the same error.
Basically I lost all of my website (including one business)
I really need to get it working again - otherwise it will costs me days to start over again...
Please help!

No, there's not a lot you can do. iWeb '08 has proved to be very unreliable at converting files etc. Go to...
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070820100323784
... to find out more.
To get your old sites back in iWeb '06 would be the best way to go and then use iWeb '08 to build new ones a your leisure.
To try this you would have to delete iWeb '08 and reload iWeb '06. Then change the name of your domain.sites2 file back to domain.sites and double click it to launch your sites in iWEb '06.
Good Luck!

• Domain.sites2 Recoverable?

Yesterday, while following directions given in this forum, my original Domain.sites2 file disappeared. A new Domain.sites2, with one site and blank page exists in its place.
Is there any way to recover my old Domain.sites2 file or rebuild it from the 7 sites and hundreds of pages in my Home/Sites folder.
Thanks  - Fabe

Is this what you did?
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
launch iWeb and try again.
There should be no way to lose that domain file on the Desktop.  If you put it back in the iWeb folder and opened iWeb and still got a blank "page" the domain file may still have your sites in it? It's size will be a quick indication if your sites are in it. You can open it with the Finder to verify it.
If you think the file might be somewhere else on the drive give  Find Any File  a try at searching for your domain file.  It can search areas that Spotlight can't, even invisible folders.  Worth a try.
