Copying OS 10.4 to new hard drive

The hard drive on my G5 failed while it was still under warranty. I was running OS 10.3.9 and when the Apple store installed a new hard drive, they installed 10.4 on it, but I had no disks for it. I subsequently upgraded many of my other software programs because the versions I had wouldn't run on 10.4. Well, last week the replacement hard drive failed. I purchased and installed a new hard drive and had to load 10.3.9 on it because I didn't have any 10.4 disks. Of course, several of my programs won't run on 10.3 now. I've ordered an upgrade disk to 10.4 but in the meantime we put the failed hard drive in the freezer and lo and behold it shows up on the desktop although I can't boot from it. I tried copying all the contents of the old hard drive onto the new hard drive by copying them, but I get the message that I need to enter the administrator name and password. I have that information, but can't figure out where and how to enter that info. Help!!!

Whew, tough spot, do you have another Mac around with Firewire?
Bit of a long shot, but you might try this on that 10.4 drive to see if it maybe will boot...

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.
If it does you could then Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Hard drive crashed in Snow Leopard, but before it did I pulled off my home folder. I am going to reinstall Snow Leopard on a new hard drive. How do I move/copy my home folder to the new hard drive? The home folder is sitting on an external hard drive that connects via firewire 400. Normally you can move your exiting home dir to another drive without any problems. For example, see
How to Move the Home Folder in OS X – and Why
But you appear to want to take a home dir from another system and make it the home dir on another system. That may or may not work. The operations are the same, i.e., point to the new home dir via the Accounts system prefs advanced options. But if the account id's are not the same there is going to be permissions problems.
Similarly, you can have permissions problems for the same reason just copying the stuff over the newly created home dir.
If you already know the user id's are the same then I think you may just get away with the substitution.

Can't copy Time Machine backups to new hard drive

The external HD with the Time Machine files is unusable (it can't be written to). Disk Utilities reports missing/damaged nodes and recommends copying all files to a new volume and erasing the HD. I got a brand new HD and began copying the contents. I was able to transfer all the regular files but when I tried to copy the Time Machine files, I got this message: "The backup can't be copied because the backiup volume doesn't have ownership enabled."
I want to use the new HD as the TM volume and continue with the same sequence of backups. How can I enable the ownership soI can copy the files?

You can't.
Time Machine backups use a complex structure; everything is intricately linked together. If that structure is damaged, as yours is, they can't be copied successfully.
If you have a copy of +Disk Warrior+ or another heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, it's possible it can repair the backups. DW is about $100, and probably a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee it can fix the backups.
And it's not a good idea to mix other data with your backups. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

HELP!!! CAN'T RESTORE OLD CATALOG TO NEW HARD DRIVE

Thank you for any help you can give with this rather desperate problem.
I have installed a replacement hard drive in my Dell Windows Vista laptop and reloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. I am unable to reconnect Elements with my old photo organizer catalog.
Thus the system says I have Elements installed, with a catalog with zero photos in it. When in fact I have 12,000 fotos all captioned, dated and tagged for the Elements organizer.
Elements HELP has nothing about reconnecting to an old photo catalog.
Is it possible (???) that Elements does not keep the catalog separate from the program itself – so that when the program itself is lost in the switch to a new hard drive, the catalog is also lost (unless the user made a backup somewhere)?
Anyway, here’s what happened:
I had made a fairly recent backup of the catalog to an external hard drive, so I copied that backup onto my new hard drive. Then in the Elements Organizer, I clicked on File; Restore Catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive. In the window that popped up, I directed it to the backup file (Backup.tly) and specified a location for restoring files and catalog. Then I clicked on Restore.
Up came a window that named one of my 12,000 fotos and said these approximate words “File already exists, do you want to overwrite it?”. I finally said Yes, and then it went on to another of my 12,000 fotos and asked the same question. I assume it planned to go through all 12,000 fotos, but I can’t imagine why.
But instead of continuing, I then got a window that said, “Error encountered while restoring catalog. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade to the latest available firmware for your specific disc drive before trying again.” (By the way, all my other programs are working fine on the new hard drive.)
I sure hope someone out there can tell me what’s going on. Thank you so much.

You copied the backup onto your new hard drive? Yes or no? Where was it before?
Then did you try to restore to the exact same location where you placed the copy?

Re-installing OS on a new hard drive

I'm planning on buying a basic Mac Mini (1g mem, 120g HD) and upgrading the memory and hard drive to save myself about 140 bucks.
Anyhow, my question is will I be able to use the OS Install/Recovery DVDs that come with new Mac Mini's to install everything that would normally be included on a fresh Mini onto my new internal hard drive?
I'm basically going to replace the RAM and HD as soon as I take the Mini out of the box, so I won't have any custom settings or personally installed software on it. I just want to make sure that I will be able to use the included OS DVDs to end up with exactly the same thing on the upgraded hard drive I will be installing that I would have had if I had kept the original HD.
This is my first Mac, so I'm used to the PC "recovery" disks that companies like Dell and HP provide with their new computers. In my experience, they can't be used to do a fresh OS install on a new hard drive, only aid in recovering the OS on the factory hard drive... and I wasn't sure if it was the same with a Mac.

Yes, you'll want to use the included disks to partition and initialize the new hard drive, and copy the software to the new hard drive. Then, install the latest operating system combo update, then use the software update function for any additional updates. The benefit of using the operating system combo update is that it includes the base operating system release and all updates. Sometimes, software update doesn't work exactly, and can create odd issues. Installing the combo update for the operating system precludes having to address any issues, at least with the operating system.

Permissions problems after installing new hard drive

I backed up my old hard drive with SuperDuper!, then installed a new hard drive. When I tried to install my backup on the new hard drive with Disk Utility, it would work fine and then hang. It wouldn't finish, even overnight. So I installed a clean copy of leopard on the new hard drive, and then used Migration Assistant to move everything over from my backup. Worked great, until I actually tried to use the computer. Tons of permissions issues, mail and address book wouldn't run, Skype won't run even after installing an upgraded version, etc. What's weird, is my main account is an administrator account, but logging on as root and trying to remove admin permissions from my main account, the checkbox is greyed out! I also don't have a UID 501 on the system. I'm 502, and my wife's account is 503. I can't fix permissions from the finder, and in certain cases can't get them changed in terminal logged in as root. I don't know how to get my data from my old hard drive (which is running 10.5.1) to my new hard drive (also 10.5.1) Please help me! Thanks.

Have you looked at the permissions with "Get Info"? Are they listed as belonging to "unkown user"?
First of all, see the Apple doc <href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306876">Administator user changed to standard.
After you clear that up, you'll probably have to remove the "unkown user" and add your user as the owner of all your folders. During that process, finder will probably crash. At that point, try running <a href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5670342#5670342>this terminal command described in "mlaster's" second posting.

Installing a new hard drive--can I use target drive?

I'm about to put a new hard drive in my Pismo, and I'd like to do it this way:
a) back up my current hard drive to a G5 iMac using Ethernet and Carbon Copy Cloner
b) install the new hard drive in the Pismo
c) move the old data back to the new drive by setting the new drive as a "target" drive and using CCC to transfer the data back via Ethernet.
Am I missing anything? And in step C, will I have to/can I format the new drive using the iMac and Ethernet?
Any suggestions and/or cautions would be appreciated.

You need to use a FireWire cable and FireWire Target Disk mode to do what you describe. Mac OS X cannot be installed over an Ethernet connection unless one of the two machines is running Mac OS X Server or there is a Mac OS X installation on the target computer in addition to the one you will be cloning. The cloning operation will not erase the destination drive, so it may need to be reformatted first; a Mac OS X installation can only exist on a disk which is formatted as Mac OS Extended or UNIX filesystem, and UFS should only be used if you have a specific reason to do so.

deactivate (help>deactivate) on your old hd.
then install using the installation file(s) and your serial number.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc. you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod. I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

Did you partition and format the flash drive first? See the following:

After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.

How to copy iphoto library folder from Time machine to new hard drive

How do I copy my iphoto library and music library from my time capsule to my new hard drive?
I have a Macbook pro - 2.53 GHz - 4 GB memory. I just replaced my hard drive to 500 GB and upgraded to OX 10.9.4. I created a new user account and login password for the new hard drive. I copied my documents folder to external drive before the old hard drive failed, but I was not able to copy over my iphoto library or imusic library. My old hard drive was regularly backed up on my time capsule (1TB).
I used migration assistant to transfer my user account to the new hard drive (1 of 3 on the time capsule). The data transferred successfully, but at login the login name does not match the user folder. Nor do any of my passwords allow me to login to the transferred username/account. When I login to the account that I set up on new hard drive I can see the userfolder migrated in but the folders do not allow entry.
What can I do now at least to get my photos on the time capsule onto my current hard drive? Can I go into my time capsule like an external hard drive and simply copy over my iphoto library from the last back up of the old hard drive?

You probably tried to move a user account from your TC to your computer that was already active on the computer.. this is one of the no no's that pondini lists.
