Copying page from one app to another: Different themes

All the threads on this forum for steps to copy a page from one app to another refer to Raj's instructions at Synonyms
What if the 2 apps involved have different themes? When I do the final step (f) in his procedure, that page will have Theme X and the rest of the pages will have Theme Y. How is this handled?
Will the new page just use the templates it needs from whatever theme the app it is imported into happens to be using? Or would it bring along the templates it uses from the old application?
Thanks

Raj's technique predates themes and has no connection with themes. A page has one numeric attribute that references a page template or is null.
Raj's technique never handled the case where the referenced page template didn't exist in the target application.
It's your job (see the caveat in that threat) to ensure that you don't reference non-existent shared components from the page being copied.
What if you do anyway? That isn't part of the solution that was presented but the answer is you have to repair the damage.
What you are saying, in effect, is that that technique for copying pages across apps really works best only if the 2 apps involved have the same theme, right? There are at least four cases: 1) the page template attribute is null so it will use the app's default page template which I believe is adjusted when you switch themes; 2) the page template attribute is not null and locates an existing page template which is a template in the current theme. In this case everything should work correctly; 3) the page template attribute is not null and locates an existing page template which is not a template in the current theme. In this case the referenced page template will be used at runtime, but the theme reports and/or switch theme functionality may not work as expected with respect to that page; 4) the page template attribute does not locate an existing template. I don't know what the result is in this case.
I also don't know if the template a page uses is considered to be part of a given theme based on the template's name or numeric ID.

    Hello,
I have several Lenovo W520 (Core i7-2720, 8GB ram, Quadro 1000M) and a couple Dell M6500 (Core i7, 4GB ram, Quadro FX 2800M) all running Windows 7 Pro x64, the latest video drivers and Adobe CS5, including Indesign 7.0.4.  We have several different Indesign docs that for the purpose of interactive Table of Contents, are copying pages from one to another to end up with one master document.  On the majority of the documents, copying as few as one page to another doc crashes Indesign with the windows system error below.

  • FW CS5: Copy Page from one document to another without changing layers

    Hi,
how can I copy a Page from one document to another without changing the layers?
Drag-and-drop isn´t possible and by Copy-Paste all elements are placed in the same layer.
    Greetings,
    toho

    Use File > Import.
Open the File, then navigate to the page you want to import
Be sure to select Insert after current page, or FW will just import the content into the current page itself.

  • Issue: Copying page from one appln to another appln in same workspace

    Hi All,
I am using APEX 4.0.2 version.
I tried to copy a page from one application (2001) to another application (1000) in same workspace using the option 'New Page as a Copy'. The page is copied correctly. But sometime I am getting some issues in copied page in application 1000 like button id (button id of the button used in 2001) is updated instead of button name in some processes which are using the condition as button name in 'When Button Pressed' option and Sometimes LOV's are also changed when we give copy in the wizard .But the copied page in application 1000 is working fine in that workspace. The same page exported and imported in application 1000 on different instance (consider it's a production instance). In production, The process is not working when the button is pressed.
    My questions are,
    1) Buttons are not sharable, Why the copied page in application 1000 working correctly and the process is called when the button is pressed??
    2) Why it’s not updating the button name in 'When Button Pressed' option?
Is it a bug?? How can we resolve these type of issues??
    Thanks
    Lakshmi

    Hi Lakshmi,
Given that your environment is running 4.0.2, would you mind carrying out a similar test on our hosted instance, apex.oracle.com, to verify whether the issue you hit has been resolved with our latest release?  If it hasn't been resolved, please outline the steps to reproduce the issue.
Also just to address some comments made by Howard:
"But for items and button names in processes, computations, conditions and ... this updating may NOT occur.  (I don't have a list of what gets updated and what not.)  APEX is not assuming that item PX_SAL in a CONDITION is to be update to PY_SAL on the new page.  You may know that's what you wanted but from what I've seen, APEX does not assume a 1-1 correspondence in these other cases."
You are correct in stating that sometimes references to page item names are not renamed during the copy page process.  However, that is a bug.  The copy process should be renaming page item references, updating the name to reference the new page ID in place of the original page ID.  For example, when copying page 1 to a new page, 2, then any page items from page 1 should be renamed during the copy process to reference the new page number, i.e. P1_NAME should be renamed to P2_NAME, and references to that original item name should also be updated.  Only this morning, a customer raised a 4.2.2 bug (17054144) for an issue in the copy page process, where page items referenced in the "Conditional Display" settings of an Interactive Report column were not being renamed.  While verifying that issue, I also noticed a similar problem which impacts Classic Report columns, and Flash chart series queries.  These issues will be resolved in a future release, but please do update this thread if you have identified any other occurrences that you believe should be handled during the copy page process.

    Hilary

  • Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

    Please Help,
This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily.  Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
Please help!  If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!
thanks in advance for any help.
Or am I just being ridiculous and not actually realising you can switch this off, doh!
    G

Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
(When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)

  • Copy single master page from one document to another?

The answer to a previously posted question seems to involve creating a document differently (than I had). A lot of work went into the creation of the master pages in the original document which I will now need to recreate in the new document. Is there a way I can copy one master page from one document to another?
    Many thanks,
    Theresa

There are a number of ways to do this.
Create a copy of the document you want to copy the Master page from. Delete all pages except for the one you want (but you have to leave Right and Left alone as FM must always have these two pages available).
Open the new document and the one that you want to import the master pages from.
    In the new document:
Import from Document: (select the document with the Master Page that you want)
    then
    File > Import > Formats
    and select Page Layouts only.
Note that Right/Left always come along for the ride.
Alternative and probably best way to get a single Master Page:
In new document, add a new Master Page and select "Empty".
In the old document, on the desired Master Page, Select All on page (ctrl+A) and then copy (ctrl+v).
In the new document on the new master page, paste (ctrl+v) to add the layout. Note: you may need to rotate the page first  if it isn't in the same orientation as in the old document.

    OK my bad
I just realized that I was in Word Processing in one document and Page Layout in another and you cannot do the copy between the two. Changed the Blank documentto word processing and voila it worked.

I think this might help. Go to the document you want to copy the page from and go to the "View" menu and choose "page thumbnail" so you can see the thumbnails on the side of the document. Right click (or control click) on the thumbnail of the page you want to copy and choose "copy.
Go to the document you want to paste the page into and make sure you have the "View thumbnail" option turned on. If you already have some pages click on the page you want the new page to follow and then right click and paste the page where you want it. (you have to do this in the thumbnail view area, not in the actual document itself.) If you have inserted the page in the wrong spot, just drag it to the right location. note: I have tried dragging the thumbnail from one document to another and it does not work. Too bad because it works that way with a PDF documents in "Preview" app.

  • Copying iweb pages from one computer to another

I have iweb pages operational on a G5.
I want to transfer them to iweb on my macbook instead.
I don't want to re-create them from scratch.
    I have a .mac account.
Both iweb programs are the same version.
This is a mac! There must be an easy way to copy the web pages from one computer to another!
I explored the domain file route, copied the file from my G5 to the macbook, and did not get the pages I wanted. Instead I got the start page template. My information was not there.
    Any help out there?

All your information is in a single file called "domain"
By default it should be located in your
    user/library/application support/iWeb/ folder.
Find it, copy it, and move it to the new computer.
The first time you use it on the new computer double click the newly moved "domain" file to start up the iWeb application. Once you do that iWeb will remember that that is the file to open on start-up.
I use multiple computers to edit iWeb and to avoid confusion as to which "domain" file is the most recent, I just keep it on a flash drive. Be sure to keep "domain" backed up safely on your computers and off (CD disks, external hard drives, etc) because if you lose that one file, you've lost all your work. iWeb cannot edit published pages.
The reason you got blank pages is that you have to double click on the newly moved "domain" file to start up iWeb. Otherwise iWeb will start from the blank "domain" file that is already on the computer. You can have many "domain" files on the computer, If you start the iWeb application by clicking the iWeb icon, it will open the last "domain" file edited on that computer, which isn't the one you just moved. There is no other way to access your work.

  • [JS CS3] Moving pages from one doc to another

I'm having trouble understanding the pages.move method, when used to move pages from one file to another. With one ID file open, I want to create another file, and then move pages from the first file to the second. At this point, the new, second file is untitled. Must I save it first? Here is what I have so far...
    var oldDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var newDocument = app.documents.add();
    // Move pages
    oldDocument.pages.itemByRange(0,1).move(LocationOptions.after,newDocument.pages[-1]);
I'm having trouble figuring out how to reference both documents properly.

Dave, that was it! I didn't realize that the Move method actually "moved" the pages. I assumed it copied the pages, similar to the move pages dialog without the "delete pages after moving" option checked. But I see now that what I really want to use is the "duplicate" method, which will allow me to copy the page from a one-page document into another document. Thanks!

Is there any other way to copy data from one application to another application?

You can also call a custom DTSX package in SSIS via the datamanager.
there are at least 5 ways of transfering data in BPC between apps.
    1. Through the front end (excel etc) via evdre/evsnds
    2. Through Script logic using *Dest App
    3. Using BPC's standard export dtsx package via DM
    4. Using SSIS using BPC's custom SSIS tasks
    5. Through Script logic using stored procs.
i am sure people will come up with more.
remember if you use ssis and move data into any table but the wb, you need to process the cube afterwards.

  • How can I copy songs from one iPod to another?

I received a new iPod Classic (last generation) and I'm trying to transfer my songs from my old iPod Nano (also last generation).

Is there a way to copy only the songs on the +iPod Nano+ (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?

*Is there a way to copy only the songs on the iPod Nano (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?*
You can't copy directly from one iPod to another, you have to copy the songs back to iTunes and update the new iPod from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iRepo Mac and Windows

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
