Copying Part of a Sequence

Hi
Not sure how to do this but I have a long sequence. The client wants to see a 2 minute segment from the middle of the sequence. I suspect I might need to copy out the 2 minute clip and composites (text boxes, etc) into a new sequence but how to select just the section I want to copy?
When I used to use Sony's Vegas Pro, I could just click and drag in the upper timeline bar to select everything.
How can I do this in FCP 6?
Then I have to put it on a DVD for them.

There are a few things you can do:
To copy a portion of a sequence, use the Range Selection Tool (ggg). Paste the lifted segment into a new sequence.
Or, set in and out points in your sequence and Export. Only the footage within your I/O points will be exported.

Copy part of a sequence from one project into another?

I want to bring a sequence from none project into another. Do I need to import the files into the bin in new project? Or is there a shorter way?
(This was what I was trying to do in my last post when it all went south. I'll post it there too)

I have brought an old sequence from a FCE project into FCP, and then copied them into a new( final) sequence, and there's a problem. Some--but not all--of the video files are very wide. Can I correct or do I need to re-import the original files fron the Hard drive?

Premiere crashes when copying something in my sequence

I'm working on a PC with the latest CC Premiere version and everytime i try to copy a part ( ctrl + c) of my cut the program just crashes.
I tried out a lot now and nothing really works for me. I tried different parts of the sequence, different codecs. it just crashes instant everytime i copy.
really frustrating.
has anyone a solution for this?

How do I modify custom step type that is part of a sequence?

I have an example sequence that has a custom step type called "LabView Reentrant Action". My interest is to modify this step type to my needs. Because this custom step type is part of the sequence there is no definition in global type palette. I was told that I could copy this step into global type palette. But, I don't think I could.
I can copy the step from the sequence space but I do not have an option to paste it in the palette.
In sequence space I have options to choose LabView Reentrant Dialog Steps under Insert Step pull-down menu. When I open Step Type Menu Editor in the palette space, all types are listed except LabView Reentrant Dialog Steps. I think these are not showing in the palette because they are custom types built into the sequence.
How can I extract the custom step type into global palette so that I could modify to my needs?

If you already have the customer step type "LabView Reentrant Action" then to modify it all you need is to go in "Type Palette" (Ctrl-T) and make modifications in the step type.
In case you are not able to see the step type in type palette then you need to add the step type in a custom ini file. You can add that ini file by clicking on customize in "Palettes" drop down menu. The you can copy paste a step in the step type and make modifications to the step.

Import part of the sequence from another project

I'm working on about the fifth edit of a project and now want to move part of a sequence (about 40 clips) from one project to another. I understand I could import the entire sequence and then delete all but the portion I want, or delete all but the portion I want and then import it as the entire sequence - but this might take a while. Anyone know of a quicker way to import a portion of a sequence from one project to another. Many thanks

Would have reported back earlier but have been on other adventures. FYI, never get involved in filming medieval stuff, they're insane. But back to the project in topic, unfortunately the lasso / copy from one project to another certainly did not work in this instance. However thanks to Craig Howard @ # 1. This is probably the only method that will work in this example and even so I'll report on it's outcome later.

How do I solve General Error problem when rendering and/or playing part of a sequence?

All of a suddenly when I was editing, the General Error message appears. Now there's part of a sequence I cannot render nor play.
I've restarted the application and the computer but without result. I've also cleared my render folder.
Is there a solution to this problem?

I appreciate your respons, though it did not work for me.
I've narrowed to problem down to a 5 sec clip of sound I have on the timeline, even after reconnecting that clip to a copy of the file it doesn't work. This has me perplexed.

Copy and pasting between Sequences

I edited a 3-camera HDV mulitcam project. It was perfect. No problems.
I created a second sequence in the same project. I copied and pasted part of the Sequence One Timeline into the Sequence Two Timeline.
The video in Sequence Two does not look as good. Why?
It's the same video. Why the difference? Will the quality also be diminished after exporting to DVD and/or YouTube?

Please give the exact item properties of the clips you're editing and the exact item properties of the sequence in which you're editing. Select a clip in the Browser and press Cmd-9 or Edit>Item Properties>Format. Select a sequence in the Browser and repeat.

How do I sync the "view size" when I copy clips from one sequence to another in FCE4?

My idea was to edit an advanced clip in a separate sequence (bad idea) and then copy it into the main sequence, but I ran into an obstacle.
For a clip to fit the window in Sequence 1 it is shown at 44%, while in sequence 2 it is enough with 22%. Problem is, when I copy a clip from sequence 2 to 1, it appears twice the size. How can I adjust this? The clip from sequence 2 becomes disproportionately big on the screen when copied to sequence 1.

As Studio X pointed out, you open a huge can of worms when you work with sequences of different specifications, but try this -
once the clip has been pasted into the sequence, click on it on the timeline so that it is selected. Now Control-click on that clip, and from the drop down menu, choose Remove Attributes.
When the remove attributes pane opens, check the box for Basic Motion and Distort (if they are not grayed out) and click OK. This should reset the clip size.
If this is successful, you can do this to multiple clips all at once by selecting them, then clicking on any one of the selected clips and doing the above.

How do I copy parts of layers from one AI doc into a new AI doc and keep/create same layer names?

How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers, with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains 400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need, so please don't suggest that as the solution.

No Monica, nothing in Plug-ins other than the standard installed items (extensions, filters, formats, etc.). No 3rd-part clipboard extension on my computer that I'm aware of, either. All frustratingly basic. And my other CS5 Adobe programs appear to work well, at least to the extent that I am familiar with them.
So, from what I can tell of the various comments (thanks to all of you), am I correct in thinking that it seems I can't, in fact, do what all of you can do (that is, copy some objects from some layers in one doc and paste into another doc preserving those same layers by name and organization, and each containing the correct objects from each original layer)?
If so, that solves half my issue - "is it supposed to be possible to do it"; leaving just the other half - "why can't I do it too".
I'll get those screenshots made and posted later just in case I haven't adequately described the issue, or y'all haven't understood it.

Help in copying part of threaded text in InDesign CS5

When I copy part of a threaded text box that is linked to another text box in InDesign CS5 and then paste it to another location, the text from the first text box appears in the pasted version. The remaining text that was linked from the first text box to the second does not appear in the pasted new text box.

Nor should it. You only cpoied what you selected, and the new frame is not threaded to anything.

How to send only part of a sequence to Encore?

I'm new to CS5.5 and I've been trying to figure out how to send only part of a sequence to Encore from PPro. I see in the Help file that it says this can be done but it doesn't explain how to do this (or I haven't been able to find where it's explained). When I use "send to Encore" with dynamic link it sends the whole sequence even though I've tried marking in/out or marking the section I want with the work area bar. Is it not possible to do this using dynamic link?

Playing around with this a bit I found another method in addition to the one you described. I found I can mark part of the sequence with the work area bar and then use Export. The Export screen has an option to send the entire sequence or only the part under the work bar. Then I imported it into Encore and since it was exported with final disc settings Encore didn't have to encode it.
But I think I will send in a feature request. Hopefully a lot of other people will also ask for this.

Can I copy part of a PDF from iBooks?

I emailed a PDF to my iPad.
Then opened it in iBooks.
Now I want to copy part or all of the document into a Pages document.
I can't find a way to get a Select or Copy menu to come up.
I've tried tapping, double tapping, and holding my finger on the page?

This may not work for all PDF files as some PDF files are not created correctly or some content cannot be copied.

Copy and paste - can't copy parts of a SMS message

I'm getting really frustrated with the copy part of copy/paste within a SMS. In the SMS - If I tap on any number or word = nothing happens (if nothing is underlined), If I tap on a number underlined = I get the option to phone or skype?? If I double click = nothing happens, If I do a long press I the options to:COPY MESSAGE TEXTFORWARD MESSAGECOPY MESSAGE TO SIM CARDDELETE MESSAGEVIEW MESSAGE DE TAILSADD STAR If I want to copy some text (e.g. phone number, address, anything else) but not the whole SMS I cannot find a way to do it. Anyone else having this problem with SMS messages? Sometimes you need to extract info from the SMS to paste into an entry box on a website for example or to add to contacts etc. Can anyone help?

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to copy parts of a text message in the pre installed messaging application. But if you press a number, you can open it with the phone application and copy the number from the dialer. And if you want to copy an URL, you can open the page and copy it from the URL-field.
If you want parts from a text message, my best suggestion would be to copy the text into a notepad or similar and edit the text. Thereby, you can copy it with the text you want included.

Exporting a part of a sequence to Quicktime movie!

Is there a way to export a part of a sequence to quicktime movie in FCP?
I come from Premiere world. In premiere there is a work area bar in the timeline; During AVI export it can be set to export clips within work area. That kind of ability seems to be missing in FCP. When I try to export, its exporting entire sequence. Is there a way to limit export area within a sequence?

Another question, Is there a set-up that I can make so that the clips that are exported to quicktime movie, automatically imported into the project. I know I can manually import the clip. Again, Premiere had the ability to do this. I looked through the preference set-up, didn't find anything.
