Copying photos from IPhoto to File Folders

After I rename a photo in iPhoto, I drag it and/or copy it to a an external HD to archive. Problem is: the caption does not copy over. Instead, the original DSCNxxxx number transfers. Does anyone know how I can transfer everything?

Use the file -> export command. In the resulting dialogue you have losts of options, including writing the metadata to the file.
the caption does not copy over. Instead, the original DSCNxxxx number transfers.
That's not the caption, it's the filename. Check out the options to use the +Title as filename+ on the Export dialogue.
FWIW: While this does back up your photos it's not a back up of your Library and you will suffer dataloss with out one.

  • Copying photos from iPhotos to an external hard drive, changes the dates the photo was created

I have the odd query where when I copy photos from iPhoto in to any other folder, whether it's on the mac deskstop or an external hard drive, that the 'date created' on the some of the photos is changed from the date the photo was actually taken to some random date. This is sometimes the date that I move the photos and sometime a date seemingly randomly selected between the date when the photo was taken and then date I copied the photos.
It doesn't make a different if I copy or cut and paste each file, and if I select all photos from a single event and copy then all in one go, some photos keep the correct data and others don't.
Most of these photo of of my baby, so the exact date take is very important ofr reference. Current I have a 100 odd photos taken over a few weeks all with the same 'created date'. I have no idea if she was 10 week or 20 weeks old at the time.
Any ideas? It's really frustrating me.

    No
iPhoto never does anything with a photo that is not in its library
Although it does not affect this do you have a default managed library or a (strongly not recommedned) referenced library - (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended.

  • Copying photos from iPhoto to desktop-error

I'm trying to save or drag photos from iPhoto to the desktop or hard drive but it won't let me. I get the circle with a line through it. When I try exporting the photos to the desktop I get an error message that says, "Unable to create users/myharddrivename/desktop." Some photos copy over but some don't. Is there a way to just access the main iPhoto library and grab them all? This is an old machine, so I don' t think it works like the new versions of iPhoto. I can't see any folders anywhere under my user or library. Any insights?

iPhoto uses a "libraries" paradigm and essentially hides your photos in "packages" which no other applications can access, including Apple's own Finder.
If you let iPhoto touch your photos, it took them over and you can now only access them through the Export function inside iPhoto.  You cannot use the Finder to drag-copy them.
(iPhoto is the first thing I customarily delete from any and all new Mac OS installs.)

  • Copying photos from iPhoto to iPad

How do I regulate size of photos moving from iPhoto to iPad? Do I just move them to Photos or do I have to download iPhoto for iOS? My originals are all large files from my Nikon and full size for the photos I'd want to move to the iPad would take up 11 gig of space.  I just want them on the iPad as a mini portfolio, leaving the originals on my iMac.

Then you cannot use Photo Stream, sorry. You'll need:
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or later
Then use iTunes to sync your photos to the iPad, see this link:
          http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
Create an album (or albums)  in iPhoto with the photos you want to import to your iPad.
You have to options to sync from iPhoto:
Either export the photos from to albums to folders on your harddrive, and then sync these folders to the iPad. The folders will be synced as events. When exporting you can reduce the size of the photos.
Or share directly from iPhoto to iiTunes and use the option "for "Selected albums, events, and faces" and then select the albums you want.
Either way, the raw files will upload as jpegs to the iPad and not as raw files.

  • Can't copy photos from iPhoto backup DVD - Privileges Problem

I have created several DVD backups of photos from iPhoto, but when I open the DVDs and try to copy and paste photos it says that I can't because I don't have sufficient privileges. I know about the possibility of clicking on the "sharing and permissions" and "Ignoring ownership on this volume" tabs from the get info section, but it is not possible for me as the DVD's info comes up with that area translucent, thus I can see those options but have no possibility of choosing any of them in "sharing and permissions".
Does anyone know a way to overcome this?
Does this mean I have to do something like use SUDO commands or something else complicated just to copy and paste photos from DVDs???
Is there not an option to make backup DVDs on iPhoto which are copyable?
Why would anyone backup photos so that they can't be accessed to copy and paste?
    Thank you

If you made the Back Ups with iPhoto's Share -> Burn command then when you insert the Disk into the Mac it will appear in the iPhoto Window. Drag the Events from the Disk to the Library heading in the iPhoto Window to restore them.

  • Hard time copying photos from iphoto to external hard drive

Sorry this is so long, and perhaps unclear, but I would like to copy my photos from my iphoto library onto an external hard drive. The problem is that every time I try and copy the whole library, it finds a picture that crashes the whole effort. I then tried exporting Event by Event to the hard drive, and that worked for a while, but then after about 10 of them it stopped working: about 50 photos into each Event it tells me that it cannot create the volume on the hard drive. Do you think it's a problem with the hard drive?
I have tens of thousands of photos, and this is taking forever, since every way I try to do it starts but never finishes, and I am never sure what actually has transfered.
I also have opened the iphoto library and copied the originals, the modified, AND the data files, but that takes forever too, and I'm never sure if I really have everything. I'd like to copy event by event if possible... and I do not want my iPhoto library to live only on the hard drive, since I use it as a back up and not permanently attached. any ideas?
    Thanks so much!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The problem is that every time I try and copy the whole library, it finds a picture that crashes the whole effort.
Why does the pic do this? Is it a corrupt file? Or is it a missing file?
but then after about 10 of them it stopped working: about 50 photos into each Event it tells me that it cannot create the volume on the hard drive. Do you think it's a problem with the hard drive?
No, that message usually means that iPhoto cannot find the actual photo being copied.
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • The problem with copying photos from iPhoto...

Good day! I have a problem. After the system upgrade to Mac OS X(version 10.7.1) iPhoto(version 9.1.5) program was absolutely not perform adequately. I do a lot and often edit the photos using iPhoto, and then copy the finished photos on removable media. After the procedure, Copy - Paste is that the images recorded on a media without correction. Please understand this situation, so how to use iPhoto with this error then I can not.

File is saved in JPEG, but the photo was not taken into iPhoto adjustments.
Here is the file in iPhoto
So I export the selected photo
    Here is the exported file.

  • Elements importing photos from iPhoto into nonsensical folders - how do I convert events or import into dated folders from iPhoto into elements?

Please help! Can't seem to find the answer on the website or anywhere else online. I don't see an option to convert events from iPhoto into folders in elements. Any advice would be appreciated.

The whole point of a program like organizer is to ignore the folders and use tags and categories instead. However, if you want to preserve the iphoto events then the way to do it is not to use "from iphoto" but rather to export each event from iphoto separately, organize your folders how you want them, where you want them and then use "from files and folders" instead.

  • How do I copy photos from iphoto to an sd card. Copy doesn't work and export doesn't work.

I have tried to copy photos to an SD drive on my macbook pro from iphoto. Copy does not work and I get an error when I try export. Can this be done?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what happens when you try to drag and drop from the Finder? Any messages?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Cannot copy photos from iPhoto to iPod Nano

    Hello all,
This is my first post so please be gentle!
I have just purchased a new Nano. Everything works fine and dandy apart from viewing photos.
I have set up the Nano via iTunes to copy (sync) all photos. iTunes then optimises the photos and states it has copied them to the Nano. When I view them on the Nano they are not there. I have changed the amount I copy (sync?) from one folder to the whole lot with no effect.
    Am I doing anything wrong.
How much free space do I need in the first place?
What size does iTunes reduce the photos to?
    Please help me!
    iMac G5 iSight 20" 2.1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'm not sure what's going on, but something you might want to try is to make an album in iPhoto with only three or four photos, and then set the iPod to only sync with that album. That should at least let you know if the feature works, and then you can play with sizes, etc. Also, you might want to make sure you have installed any available updates for your iPhoto, just to play it safe.

  • How do I copy photos from a specific file on PSE11 to a photo album that I created on my iTouch?

When I try to sync a file on PSE 11 with my iTouch either from iTunes or from PSE I get a message that the file will be removed from my computer.
How do I copy not move these pictures to the specific album that was created in iTunes?

Your are welcome. Glad you got that sorted out. If you want to know about the new features in iOS 7, you can download the user manual here,http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf, you can open it in your iBooks as well.

  • How to copy photos from iphoto to windows hard drive

I wanna back up my iphoto to windows hard drive.
    thanks.

I share the Mac iPhotos folder \\COUNTERPWN\Pictures\iPhoto Library.photolibrary\Masters and create a shortcut on my windows desktop. If you want you can use Microsoft Synctoy and run it whenever you want to back them up. Kind of reverse order, instead of going from Mac to Windows to backup, go from Windows to Mac and back again. lol hope that made sense.
Just make sure you have File Sharing selected and Windows Sharing on in prefrence for you iPhoto folder.

  • Copying pics from iphoto says can't copy, photo is busy????

Sometimes when I try to copy photos from iphoto to my external hard drive, it comes up with the message 'cannot copy to this location because one or more of the pictures is busy' what does this mean and how can I change it? It happens quite randomly and if I delete the pic or change the name of the pic i'm trying to copy, it will choose another pic to be busy.....what am I doing wrong? it's infuriating. WHat's more, there is nothing about it in David Pogues 'missing manual'. Am I the only one at a loss when it comes to finding solutions to problems that seem so simple?????

*It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. There is no need for you to ever enter this folder. There are no user serviceable parts there. Period.*
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
is there a simple way to make the pictures in my finder>pictures>iphotolibrary corresponde with the pics in iphoto?
No. The Finder is a File Organiser, iPhoto is a photo organiser. The point is that you let iPhoto look after the files and you organise, edit, whatever in the iPhoto Window - without reference to the files.
To delete pics from iPhoto and the HD, put them in the iPhoto trash and empty it, that's all.
i don't want to have multiple duplicates of the same image
You don't, you have different versions - as detailed above. There is no way to stop iphoto from preserving your original file. If you don't want this use another application.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Again, stay out of the iPhoto Library in the Finder, and remember everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window - and if you can't figure out how to achieve something, post here or even check the Help.
    Regards
