Copying pictures to library & import time?

I have over 5,000 pictures I want to transfer into iPhoto, and deselected "Copy files to library" to save space by not having the photos recopied to the library. But, when I do import some of the photos, it still copies the image files (albeit a slightly smaller jpg) into a "modified" folder, even though no pictures have been edited yet. I understand that iPhoto should create thumbnails, but I don't think it should be copying the whole image? The imports are also taking an extremely long time - almost 10 minutes for 200 pictures. This seems incredibly long, especially when it shouldn't be copying the image and just creating aliases. Is this a known bug, a what can I do to stop iPhoto from copying the images and taking so long to import?

Unless you have a lot of portrait oriented files, they should not take up that much room compared to having a "normal" library. The only way to rid yourself of that is to export the rotated file to the desktop, reimport it and then delete the original (remember if you're using the alias system you'll have to find and delete that original file form you source files as iPhoto does not touch them. The alia system is a great space saver. My 17,700 image files (27G worth) are represented by only a 1.7G iPhoto library. I've created some Tutorials to assist users in converting over to that system.
An image management system that will do what you want is iView MediaPro. You can have your images on an external HD and your catalog file, with thumbnail sizes up to 640 x 480, on your boot drive. You can still access the thumbnails, do your metadata organizing even if the external HD is not mounted. You can have very large preview thumbnails for running slideshows when the source files on the external HD are not available. That can, however, create very large catalogs which may get to large to handle easily. It's great for small catalogs where you want to share the images with people and not have the original files available.
Why would you consider Aperture when it copies the files to its library like iPhoto does in its normal mode? That won't save disk space. Besides it's hardware requirements may be more than your PB can deliver. That's been a bone on contention for a lot of users.

You’re running an outdated copy of Safari on your Desktop. That won’t work.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Check that the Safari application is in that folder. If it is, use it, and delete the copy on your Desktop. Never move or copy built-in applications.
If you've deleted Safari from the Applications folder, back up all data, then reinstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Copied Iphoto 9 library to new Imac... question on faces...

    Hi,
I have an old macbook with Iphoto 9 loaded.  Faces never worked right on the Macbook and after a while, I just gave up.
I bought a new Imac yesterday and spent a while trying to figure out how to get my Iphoto library over to the new machine.
First, I used migration assistant and tried to migrate files from my time machine. It"migrated" the user that is defined on my macbook and the associated folders I specified in migration assistant (music, movies, pictures). I thought it would just populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto, but it actually just copied user "Mike" (my name is the user on my macbook) and the files, and then I couldn't even get at them (had some message saying they were locked or I didn't have permission or something to that effect)!  I thought it would automatically populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto with all my stuff from the time machine... but nope.
So, I deleted the user "Mike" from my Imac since it was unaccessible anyway.
Second, I decided to open Iphoto 11 from the new Imac and use the "import photos" command from there.  I navigated to the image folder on my Time Machine and imported that way.  I got closer this time... but it imported 32,000 images when all I have is ~6000!  Tons of duplicates and triplicates were loaded!  Doh.  Round 2 was a bust.
Third, I decided to delete the Iphoto library on the new Imac (since it now contained 32,000 images) and instead, straight up copy the Iphoto library from Time Machine and paste it into the approrpriate directory (this was midnight, so a little fuzzy, but think it was just in user>pictures... can't remember if there was an "Itunes" folder or not.)  Regardless, the Iphoto library seems to have copied over OK!  When I opened Iphoto this morning, it gave me a messahe about upgrading my Iphoto Library, but once that was done, all 6000 pictures were there, with all the events, etc.  So everything seems just fine.
    So really, 2 questions:
    1) Was this the right way to have done it all along or did I screw something up now that I will pay for later?  And if so, how should I fix it?
    2) I want to wipe out my "Faces" and start from scratch.  The "Faces" that are there now are left over attempts to get the Faces in my Iphoto 9 working (basically, it didn't work at all and the only phots in the folders are ones I manually put in there), and just want Iphoto 11 to do its thing without any legacy '09 attempts.  How do I wipe out what is in the Faces Corkboard and let Iphoto 11 go to work with identifying faces from scratch?
Sorry for the long post, but figure some background would be helpful!

The correct way to move  Library is to copy it to the new machine and just open it. You got it right at the end.
Just erase the Faces. Select a Face and go command-delete

  • Quits while importing; pictures in library folder don't show in window

Quits while importing; photos are in iPhoto Library, but don't show up
I have about 6500 photos in iPhoto 5.0.4. Everything worked well until this week when I went to import a series of new pictures. I import from a Scandisk card reader.
The process appeared to go well until the progress bar showed 1 photo remaining. After a time the application quit.
I tried again with the same result, several times.
I tried rebuilding the library. It appeared not to work.
I copied the library to another disk drive and tried to create a new library and copying back the pictures into the new library. It didn't work.
I trashed the software and reinstalled it, then copied the old pictures into the library and the new ones from my camera. Then I had to recreate the albums I had before. It worked.
This morning I shot more pictures and tried to add them to the library. Déja vu. It got to one picture remaining and quit.
I rebuilt the library. This time it seemed to work. The "new" pictures were still in the library folders on the hard drive but did not show up on the screen (one for each time I'd tried to load them with _1, _2, etc. added to the name, for each additional attempt, including the last one in the series).
I tried to add to the library. It quit at the one photo remaining point again.
    Suggestions, please.
    Alex Norton

    Hi Alex,
    Two things to suggest:
    -Try a different card reader
-Use Image Capture to import your images to the computer. You will have much more control. Once images are downloaded you can put them in dated folders then import the folders to iPhoto.
This is my preferred method and is what I do.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • Photo library on Time Capsule and want iPhoto to recognise it rather than import to Mac Mini small Hard drive

As heading states, I have 100Gb of photos and want to have them "sorted" and viewable through iPhoto. at the moment when i add photos it is importing them from the TC to my mini's hard drive duplicating the pictures and using up valuable space. Is there a way of pointing iPhoto to the photo folder on TC as you would music and videos for iTunes library?

Yes there is but you shouldn't.
    Here's why:
    1. Is this a wireless connection? If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    Problems with a Referenced Library
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

  • I am trying to transfer my photos from old mac to new mac.  I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!  What happened?

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it

  • Tried to copy my iphoto library from my old mac and I get 7 times more photos???

I had under 5,000 photos in my old iPhoto library on my old mac pro desktop.
After I tried to import the old library into my new iPhoto library (on my new mac i7 running Mavericks), iPhoto ended up with over 35,000 photos.
iPhoto was literally creating events for single photos when the old iPhoto library never had such events. I already tried doing a search in this forum and googling but didn't come across a similar issue. The names of the events were gibberish as in the names of folders you would see if you controlled clicked and selected "show package contents" and drilled way down.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Sounds like you imported the library into iPhoto on the new machine.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Imported thousands of photos without "copying" them to Library. Can I now have iPhoto automatically "copy" those photos?

I have thousands of pictures in my iPhoto library. Many of them were not "copied" into iPhoto when imported. I had my preferences set that way to save space on my system's hard drive. I just kept those pictures on a separate hard drive in my Mac Pro. Now I would like iPhoto to automatically "copy" those into it's library while maintaining their locations in Albums and Events. (I realize this will add many GB to the size of my Library).
Is there a way to do this?

No - what  version of iPhoto are you running? Prior to iPhoto '11 Alias herder could be used to do this - http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/downloads/aliasherder/

    Hello,
I am using version iPhoto'11. Since I installed this version I experience some difficulties. After importation of pictures I can see the pictures under Library/Pictures but not under Library/Events. However I can see the event with the event title, the number of pictures and the pictures itselve as small thumbnails. BUt ounce I want to open the event to see the pictures in full screen the event title annouces 0 pictures and no pictures are visble anymore to mee. I have checked if the pictures are marked as hidden and this is not the case. What's going wrong. All the other events are visible in a normal way.
The albums with the same pictures into them are visible.
    Thanks for your help,

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Click to view image full size

  • Did restore iPhoto library from time machine remove all pictures?

I opened iPhoto '11 (in Lion/ iMac) today and noticed all the Faces tags I had were gone.  I read in the support communities that you could restore from a backup which I did using Time Machine.  I randomly picked a day from last week, hit restore, replace my current library and now there are no pictures.  All the meta info is there... everything but the pictures (& maybe Faces).  Any ideas how to get my pictures back?

Just because you don't see thumbnails in the Library doesn't mean they are missing.  Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

How can I DISABLE the pop up 'Would you like to copy it to Library', preventing this message from bothering for each and every book, again and again , time after time? (Windows 7 64bit US).
I guess this may be a feature request. Adobe may think this is a good message for every new eBook.
I sure would like to decide about that myself.

When I removed the mailbox however the lock remained in place with the default auto time of 30 minutes. When I checked in Phone management there is no option to disable this lock so I thought I could at least change the default time to something bigger but when you try, it remains at 30 mins. You also can't disable the auto time as it pops up an error message saying can't unlock phone.
Does anyone know if I'm missing something obvious here or is this something which can't be disabled once it's switched on? I've done a soft reset back to factory settings with no luck and the only other thing I can think of is re installing the firmware which seems a bit extreme.
Would like to hope there is some way to have control over this. Can someone help?
Which firmware your N8 having now? You can check firmware by choosing Call, then type *#0000#.
My N8 works fine on security setting and able to define Phone auto lock period, by choosing Menu>Settings>Phone>Phone management>Security settings>Phone and SIM card>Phone auto lock period>User defined>Lock after(minutes)

    Hi,
I have following problem. I would like to copy picture of graph to clipboard through graph “run-time shortcut menu”. It’s easy when I want copy exactly what I see. There is an Item Tag: APP_SC_COPY_DATA. That works nice. Try an example1.vi. (Run then right click on the graph...)
But problem is when I want to change the graph appearance before copying (only change the colour of the graph to be more printer-friendly). I have created a subVi with copy of the graph with changed colour. But how to simulate for the graph inside the subVi same runtime shortcut event? How to call APP_SC_COPY_DATA of subVi graph from outside Vi?
I hope I’ve explain it clear.
If you have better method for clipboard copying tell me.
