Copying Playlists to new PC/Laptop

Hello,
My old laptop died and I have just replaced it. I was able to restore all my music on the new laptop from a backup. I have copied over the entire contents of my iTunes folder(s) over and added them in. All the music and subsequent playlists appear in the new iTunes now. However, although they play just fine from the regular "Music" folder, none of the songs appear in any of the other self-created playlists. The lists are all there; They're just empty.
What did I do wrong and how can I fix without having to manually recreate them all one-by-one?

The playlists are stored in the iTunes library files. These should have been copied/backed up before upgrading. There are programs available to transfer from iPod to iTunes. I have never used them so I don't like making recommendations.

Well, I have figured out a way around this.
1. I renamed my "iTunes Library.itl" file to "iTunes Library.old"
2. and then copied an older "iTunes Library.itl" file into the Itunes directory from the most recent "Previous Itunes Libraries". I didn't do anything with the .XML file.
3. I brought Itunes back up and I had the old playlists.
4. I used the "export" option in the "File" menu to export each playlist to a text file. (It was a bit tedious cause you have to select each individual playlist...)
5. I renamed the I renamed iTunes Library.old" back to "iTunes Library.itl" and restarted itunes
6. I used the "import" option under the "File" menu to pull the playlists back.

Transferring playlist to new laptop from external hard drive and old laptop

I've seen similar topics before but none exactly describing my situation. I currently have itunes installed on my work laptop, but have the majority of my music on my external 120GB hard drive. When I add songs to itunes, I add them from the music folder on my external hard drive, thus the external hard drive must be plugged in to be able to play my music. However, if I import a cd it gets saved to my C drive on my work laptop under the itunes music folder and gets played from here.
I recently purchased a new personal laptop and would like to export my entire music library and all playlists from my current work laptop and external hard drive so that I would be able to have all my music in itunes on my new laptop without having to manually adding songs and changing the song info again. I worried that if I copy my itunes music folder to my new laptop it will look for the E drive (external hard drive) to play them rather than my new laptop hard drive. What's the easiest way to accomplish this task?? Please advise.

Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:

Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.

This is how I managed to fix the problem...and I hope this helps others in the similar situation.
I tried with another program..latest version of Nero, and this was also stopping at the 'initialising' stage. I was now lost! I thought the last resort is to give Evesham (My PC manufacturer) a buzz. They were very helpfull. Basically go into 'Control Panel', 'System', and click on the Hardware tab, then 'Device Manager'. Uninstall everything in the DVD/CDRom Drives. Then uninstall everything under the catagory IDE ATA/Atapi disk controllers. This is where my problem was, as I only had one IDE channel here. You should have 4 or 5! Reboot your machine, and everything will automatically re-load. I tried burning using Nero and it worked. Then the big test was iTunes. It worked 1st time!
I asked why the IDE channels have dissappearred, and he said sometimes uninstalling Programmes occasionally removes them.
I hope this will help others who are having problems to burn stuff on iTunes.

Yeah! Click on your iPod when it shows up under "Devices" on the left side of iTunes while plugged in. Click on the music tab at the top and select "Manually Manage songs and playlists". Then click the arrow next to you iPod on under "Devices" and it will drop down "Music" "Videos" etc under it. Go to "Music" and select all your songs and drag them to the iTunes "Music" tab. They should copy over. Then you can go back and enable autosync.

Have the latest updates etc for Mediasource. On desktop computer I have set up the playlists and song tracks exactly as I want. Everything works, no problems. On laptop I have installed all the same software as on desktop. Is there any way to copy the playlists/database to the laptop without having recreate all the playlists from scratch? I understand I will need to move all the song tracks to the same disk dri've letter and folder names which I can do no problem. Been experimenting but cannot figure out what files/folders to move to accomplish this. Thank you in advance for assistance.

Playlists are stored in a file called "iTunes Library" in your iTunes folder. I think the format of this library changed between iTunes 6 and 7. You may be able to copy this file from your old mac to your new mac and have itunes 7 convert it for you. I don't know if this works, so, if you try it make sure you have a copy of your existing iTunes 7 Library.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. In this mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

you should starting with copying the iTunes folder from your old laptop to the new one.
the iTunes folder is in your user profile Music folder.
it should go to the same location on the new laptop.
Provided that you have your media, music and movies in the default location, and you sign in to your apple ID and authorize your new computer (all in iTunes)
you should have all intact.

You would need the catalog and the images from the old computer if you want your work that you have done previously. You will have to copy the images and the catalog from your old computer to the new one. Don't you know where you imported images to?

I just bought a new macair laptop and it doens't have idvd and I want to make a DVD slideshow with music. I have an external CD drive. Is there an applicaation that apple has to do this? IF I buy a used mac, which ones have idvd?

I have a new macair laptop and it does not have idvd. It has a flashdirve instead, so no internal CD drive though I bought an external one. I'm wanted to make a DVD slide show with music and I was told I can't do that in order to play it on a dvd player. Does Mac have an appication to buy that can do the same thing? I thought I saw one for $39.95 but not sure if it will do this. The apple store did not know for sure. Also, if I bought a used mac laptop, which ones will have the idvd installed on it?

It is now apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
Other users have complained to Apple via Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html and/or http://www.apple.com/contact/ and have received a boxed copy of iLIfe 11. Give it a try. In the meantime the following maybe of interest:
iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

Pics synced to your iphone from your computer are one way- computer to iphone.
If these are the pics to which you are referring then copy them from your old computer or your backup copy of your computer, to your new one.
