Copying previews to desktop when files are offline

I've just moved over from Aperture to Lightroom and am so far very happy with the transition but I've noticed it doesn't appear possible to copy previews of files onto the desktop when the main files are offline. This is something that WAS possible in Aperture.
Am I missing something or this a feature that Lightroom doesn't support?
THANKS

Apologies for not being very clear. I work as a photographer from a number of different locations. I have my main image files stored on my home server and this is fine for when I'm working at home. But I need 24/7 access to my files for emailing low-res previews.
In Aperture, I was able to drag a preview from the library onto my desktop regardless of whether the originals were online. The size of this file was obviously a lot smaller than the original JPG but perfectly fine for emailing off as a low-res preview.
I don't seem to be able to achieve this same funcionality in Lightroom. If I try and drag an image on the desktop when my originals are offline I get presented with a 'no entry' symbol and the export function informs me that Lightroom cannot find the original file.
Hope that's a bit clearer. Thanks

i have this happen all the time, I move all my media to another drive and files that originated in another project do not reconnect because they have lost there source?
Any way to fix this mess? i am in the middle of reconnecting 400 files by hand one at a time!!!
    Thanks, mark

Because you changed the file path. From one hard drive to another...the hard drive name is no doubt different, and then if you have the files in different folder structures then yeah, it will lose the connection to that media.
Best thing to do is to clone your media drive, or name the other drive the same name, and keep the exact same file structure (folders in folders) as the original drive. Then you won't need to reconnect.

  • Why are my files copying to the desktop when I am only trying to move them?

This is the wierdest thing. I have been a Mac user for 20 years and never saw this and can't seem to solve. My drive was bloated to capacity so I backed up, erased the drive and reinstalled Tiger and and my programs, transferred all my data and booted up.
My main files are in two folders on the root drive, each time I try to take a file or folder out and place it on the desktop, the mac copys it to the desktop instead of just moving it.
Like I said I have been using my mac the same way for years moving files between folders and the desktop constantly and I have never encountered this. The only way I have ever copyed files to the desktop is by holding the option key when dragging.
I only have one user installed. So I am cluless why it is doing this.

This looks like a case of incorrectly set file permissions. Holding down option in this case should move instead of copy, but it may prompt you for a password. For ideas on fixing up your permissions refer to these articles:

What happened when you take data file offline? The offline datafile means simply that the file is not available anymore for the access. All the objects for the offline file become inaccessible for the users to access.
Is data file offline because of disk damage? we see the error that data file is haning a problem, we have manually to take data file offline? how?Yes it can happen that the data file goes offline because of any kind of damage either over the disk, or also with the file itself. For example, there may be a chance that the file is not available anymore , may be because someone has deletedthe file. So most of the times, Oracle would offline the file by itself. In any case, if the file doesn't go offline by itself than you need to take it offline yourself as the recovery for the file can't happen if its online. You would get the error messages that oracle can't acquire the exclusive access over the file.
Why is tablespace offline but data file is still online? Not sure that I did see this ever myself. Tablespace is nothing but the container for the datafile so if there is a file of it which is offline and that's the only file in the tablespace, the tablespace can't stay as online. Show us an output for the same.
The links given by Anantha are must for you to read the cocept of offlining a tablespace. Make sure you read them for sure.

  • Aperture indicates referenced files are offline

I keep my referenced images on the hard drive of my imac, and I have checked in finder that all of my referenced images are in their usual locations. Aperture will not let me adjust or export images because it thinks my hard drive is offline. If I try and adjust or export an image, I get the following message. "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." If I select "Manage Referenced Files", Aperture indicates my home directory is offline and does not show my directory tree on my hard drive.

    Hi,
Could you tell me how you resolved this problem and got Aperture to recognize
    your referenced files?
I also use TM to back up my computer, and all my referenced photos are actually stored on the TM.
This setup has worked beautifully for 6 months now, and suddenly my photos are "offline".
I can still see the files with the Finder, and also on TM and can successfully import them with
Aperture. The newly imported files are then recognized by Aperture as online. But all other files in my projects and albums are either "offline" or "not found".
I can't seem to get any where with 'Manage Reference Files'. For example, "reconnect" and "reconnect all" are both greyed out. 'Show in Finder' also indicates that the 'volume on which the files reside is offline'.
I am using a Mac Book Pro, OS X 10.5.4.
I am beginning to think I'll have to re-import all my files and re-create my projects. There must be some way to get Aperture to recognize the location of the referenced files.
Thank you for any assistance you can give.

  • What kind of compression does Acrobat do when files are combined?

I'm working with some raster print media (specifically PNGs) that I've combined and saved into PDFs for easier printing. The original files are 300dpi scans, lossless compression.
This is the process I follow:
select files to combine in Windows Explorer
right click > Combine supported files in Acrobat
    File size: Default
wait for the new binder to open in Acrobat
Save As > Save as type > Adobe PDF Files (*.pdf)
So it looks like there are two steps where possible compression occurs, 2 (combine) and 5 (save).
2: The "Default" file size button tooltip says all files are kept at their original quality.
5: No information is given on screen as to what kind of compression is done.
The second file type in step 5, Adobe PDF Files, Optimized (*.pdf), gives the option for "Standard" optimization, which compresses images to JPEG and downsizes them to 150dpi. Is this the setting for the first file type as well?

An ordinary save or save as does no additional compression.

  • Time zones being re-written when files are processed from refernced files

I'm having a problem where photos with time zones set are being re-written automatically to whatever time zone my mac is currently set at when Aperture processes them for viewing regardless of the time zone they were set to. This happens as the photos load for viewing (i.e. not on the browser thumbnail view). It does this one at a time and eats up processing time. This seems to only happen (I think) for referenced files stored on my external drive and not those stored in the Aperture library. If I re-set the photos back to the proper time zones using Batch Change, it still happens next time it has to load the photo into memory, again "processing" and again the time zone reset to whatever time zone I'm now in.
    Here's the exact situation:
    - I've imported several photosets from a Canon 50D. The camera was set to the time zone of the country in question. Let's use India at GMT +5:30 as an example.
    - When I import the photos, I also use the time zone presets, setting both the Camera Time and the Actual Time to GMT +5:30.
    - I'm importing the photos as referenced files, storing them on an external hard drive.
    - So when I first view the photos, the time and date show correct. Again using a real example IMG_0001 shows the date 6/10/10 1:43:31 PM GMT +05:30.
    - Now I close Aperture and re-open.
    - I open the folder and view the photo. The "loading" message appears at the time and the "processing" message appears on the bottom. (and during this unnecessary processing, it is very slow flipping to the next photo, a serious annoyance in browsing).
    - After processing, the photo IMG_0001 now shows the date as 6/10/10 1:43:31 PM GMT +03:00 (the time zone I'm currently in and the one my Mac is currently set to)
    - If I close it again and re-set my Mac to say I'm in London at GMT, and re-open, the photo is re-set instead to GMT.
    - I can re-set all the dates to the proper time zone using the Batch Change where I again set both the Camera Time and Actual Time to the correct time zone. But when the photo re-loads, it again re-processes and goes back to the date of the Mac. So changes don't seem to stick.
    - This appears to happen only to files that are referenced and stored on my external drive, not those stored in the Aperture library.
Has anyone had this problem? Is it a bug or some hidden setting I'm missing? Is there some way to tell Aperture "don't change the dates, ever, unless I do it via batch change"? The problem turns into a major inconvenience in reviewing and editing photos with it taking the extra processing time every photo and messing around the order.

maybe you try this question also in the dedicated Adobe Illustrator Forum, not many inhere (including me) have much experience with Illustrator nor live trace I'm afraid.

  • What happens to versions data when files are deleted ?

When working on a document with an application using autosave, I understand modifications are regularly saved together with the actual state of the file. When such file is dulicated, history and the different versions are not duplicated.
My question is, what happens to the versions data if the original file is deleted and is the space used for all versions reclaimed ?
Working with big documents on SSD disk could be a problem seems to me.
    Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Tony,
As soon as data is deleted from the cube, Data will not be available for reporting. because for any reports data is fetched from Tables, for DSO they will fetch from Active table.
So you will receive a message Data not found, if the data is deleted from Cube's table.
Assign some points, if this is helpful.

  • Garbage characters inserted in message when files are attached

Warning: this is an obscure problem.
I have changed my default encoding from UTF-8 to ISO-88591-1 using this command:
    defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "ISO-8859-1"
The reason I have changed my default encoding from UTF-8 is that Outlook clients on MS Windows were often seeing '?' characters in between words and sentences in Rich Text emails that I sent if my encoding was set to UTF-8. Changing the default encoding to the ISO encoding above corrected the problem.
However, when I attach a file to outgoing messages, the problem resurfaces and the default encoding (ISO-8859-1 for me) is not observed and the message is sent as UTF-8. Here is an example of the RAW message text that results:

  • HDV 1080p30 very slow when files are from Shake

    Hi,
I have a totally tricked out 8 core Mac pro with 8 GB ram and a 1 TB drive (mostly empty). I'm using the Latest FCP. Recently, I've been editing some HD video that I've shot and have been quite pleased with the performance of the machine/software. However, I am experiencing a weird problem. I also have Shake, which I am using to do some composting and, relevantly, remove a small amount of camera vibration from my footage. (It works great.)
However, any files that I export from Shake, using (as best as I can tell) the exact same file formats and codecs that my imported Raw (unprocessed in Shake) video is. That is: they are quicktime files, Using HDV 1080p30fps, with 29.97 FPS "drop frame" codec. While the raw imported files work great, the files I export from Shake and put into my timeline result in a "Spinning Ball" whenever I do anything at all to them- play them, move the timeline around, cut, apply a filter etc,. What am I overlooking?

    Hi Kunal
Let me explain to you how this  works
When you archive the data, it moves out of the database into a flat file which is latter stored on optical disk/hard disk etc depending upon your archiving solution
When archving is done, it also creates an index ( depending upon how your have configured the object) This index is of  few common fields of the archived objects . This is than stored within SAP. When you call SARI you seen this indexed data from SAP and hence the response is quick. At this point it does not get the data from your archives
When you call it through the transaction FBL.. , it needs all the fields ( which are not avl in the indexed data ) and hence SAP has to go to the archives to fetch it
This results in slowing it down.
Now how slow will it be is a difficult question for us to answer as a lot denpends upon your archiving solution and how much data are you trying to fetch
As far as memory problem is concerned you need to analsye the dump as to where ( on what buffer parameter is it failing) Depending upon that you will have to either increase memory parmeters OR reduce the amount of data your a fetching
    Thanks

  • Synchronising when files are missing

I store my Itunes on an external hard drive only. Unfortunately it has recently died. All my tunes are still on my Pod but I am worried about plugging it in to my computer in case autosynching will delete everything..need I worry ? Or will auto updates simply not overwrite as the files cannot be found ?

    Helpful - thanks.
Just to clarify when starting up Itunes my music library is there it's just that there is a an "!" next to each track and when clicking on tracks it says "file not found" because my hard drive (where my tracks were stored) isn't attached as it's dead.
Taking the above into account will plugging my pod in wipe it ?
Incidentaly I have just downloaded copypod..any good ? anything I should watch out for before plugging in ??

  • Contact showing online when they are offline

Same problem. Maybe it is depending on version/OS running. The situation is as follows: Using Skype (last version) simultaneously on laptop, running Ubuntu Raring, and tablet PC, running Android 4.2.2. Skype is switched on on both machines, but active contacts differ - three of my contacts are seen as offline on the Android, and are unaccesible. At the laptop more people are activeAt the same time I just did a Video Call with one of them on the PC/Ubuntu. The other person is running Skype on his I-pad. Another of them is running Skype on his Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S? - not sure about the exact model). Please helpPS Uninstall and reinstall Skype changed nothing. Changing the status to offline and back to online caused one conact to appear, but the other, running iOS did't change

Here's the reality of this PROBLEM. It has nothing to do with your software on your phones or tablets! Even when your friend powers right down (phone or tablet not even on) and/or disconnects from the net, you still can see them on line. You can completely exist Skype and remove it from memory totally (so that none of its services are running) and when you log back on, you see your friend show as on line again, even though their phone/tabelet is powered right off. THIS IS A SERVER PROBLEM ON SKYPE'S SIDE! When you log off, or better, completely power down, Skype's servers are not polling your device properly and logging off the server-side account. As an example, when I Log off Skpe then power down, the server SHOULD also disconnect the session.  But it's not. Also, the server software should check all "active" connections periodically and poll the device to confirm it's actually even on line (the entire device and the Skype client).  Again, it's not doing that or if it is, it's not doing it correctly. In my case, we have 2 smart phones (both brand new).  I use my phone all day long.  The other phone, is used from about 3.40pm to about 4.30 pm and then powered down. Yet, like this morning, when I go into MY phone and into Skype (logging on), I can see that no one is connected.... then the "Echo / Sound Test Service" becomes available (green dot) as it should, showing me that I am connected to the net, but then, our other connection also pops up with the green dot showing on line.  The other phone is not even powered on. The server did not release the session, even over night. The other problem I'm seeing is that Skype is VERY VERY VERY unstable!!!  I honestly HATE IT!   Like yesterday, and everyday, actually, both phones are on the net and skype is logged on.  On each phone, we see the green dot for each other.  That SHOULD mean that we are both connected to Skype's server. Yet, when one tries to call the other, it just rings and rings (video), but on the other phone Skype never sees the incoming call!!! We've done this standing side by side.  Yesterday in fact. So then, we ended that "call" and tried from the other phone to mine.  This time, it worked. So then, we tried again from my phone to the other phone and that now worked. After that, we powered down both phones and then I powered up mine. Yup, the session of the other phone still has green dot.  And NO, there's not a Skype service running.   I'm a Certified Computer Tech and control what's going on with our equipment. As this thread has been going on for over 1 year, it's clear that Skype either doesn't give a rat's petutie or has no clue how to fix this problem. I've hated Skype for a long time because I find their software and system so unstable.  I had hoped that by now they would have figured things out.  Which is why I installed Skype on the 2 new smart phones.  Clearly, I was wrong. It's time to see what other options are out there that actually work. So ya'll can stop believing that the problem is on your phone... it's not! (well, as far as the server session staying active).
