Copying server system to external drive, be able to boot off if necessary..

Hello,
I have PowerPC G4 tower that is running Mac OS 9.2.2 as a server, and it works OK the way it is. What I am trying to do is copy the system to an external drive that I removed from a defunct imac, the drive is only 7GB, but should be enough for a bootable external drive. How do I copy the server system onto this drive so if I want in the future to boot from it I can. I am going to be upgrading the machine to OS X, with (2) mirrored 500 GB RAID drives that all users (6) can access. I am trying to eliminate the server as a server and just be able to access mirrored drives as shared volumes across the network. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks in advance...

Thank you for the info. I was able to copy the 9.2.2 OS to an external drive and was able to boot from that drive so... that seems to be working as intended. Although I didn't see the "blessed" icon, it seems to be running the way I want it to.
Now, trying to upgrade to OS X seems to be giving me a problem... Is there a version of OS X that needs to be installed first? When I try to load 10.4.3 and reboot the mac to the install CD I get an odd screen in multiple languages, stating that "You need to restart your computer" and in the background there are multiple lines of code saying various errors "unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac3,3" "No debug configured-dumping debug information" "Kernal Version: Darwin Kernal Version 8.8.5" among other text. Last line says: "Panic: we are hanging here...
Please forgive my ignorance with these issues , but I appreciate any help possible.

  • Can't Copy Large Files To External Drive

This is driving me nuts. I'm running 10.4.11 with an external Newer Tech Ministack 320GB hard drive that's only ten weeks old. Yesterday I downloaded some large (50mb or so) QuickTime files to my desktop, which is to say my internal drive. I then tried to copy them to my external drive, since that's where I keep my movie files since they take up so much room. One copied over without any trouble, but numerous attempts to copy the others result in the process freezing after anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 of the data has been copied, or else I get the "error 36" message. My first thought was that the external drive was failing, but I can copy small movie files (10mb or so) back and forth between the two drives with no problem. What's the point of having a large external drive if you can't use it for your large files? Repaired permissions on both drives, no improvement.

I have repaired permissions and run disk repair on the internal drive as well. Yes, I've played the clips in their entirety, but I'm going to do it again and look for any hiccups. That's an interesting theory and I want to check it out.
It has occurred to me that a workaround, although it by no means addresses the underlying problem, is to use QuickTime Pro to chop the clips up into several smaller files, copy them to the external drive, and then reassemble them via QuickTime Pro on the external drive.
FWIW, I neglected to mention (although I don't know if it's pertinent or not) that immediately after installing the external drive ten weeks ago I used SuperDuper to clone my entire internal drive onto the external firewire drive. I then erased the movies from the internal drive, which was bumping up against maximum capacity. I am able to boot from the external drive, and I want to retain this capacity should the internal drive (which is, after all, six and a half years old) fail.

Hi ya'll! I'm still learning how to navigate my way with Lightroom. (Last time I wrote, I did get some responses that work. Thanks so much!) Now, I have another question. When I try to copy pics from my external drive to a CD/DVD, no matter if do it from LR or my drive, I keep getting the message; "Disk burning is not supported by LR on this computer." I've tried everything I can think of, so, I thought I'd see if anyone may know if there's anything I can do. Or could it be that my computer just can't handle it? Help!!! So frustrating!!  I have a PC Lenovo computer, I don't know if this makes any difference. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!!!

Have you burned Discs with other programs using this computer? Are you certain that you have a drive that will burn discs?

  • Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

If you want a small (comparatively) cheap server along the lines of the AirPort Extreme the nearest thing is a Mac mini.
You can use the AirPort Extreme as a very basic file server, and (unofficially) a Time Machine server. A Time Capsule has a built-in hard disk and officially supports being a Time Machine server.

iPhoto opens but then the spinning rainbow wheel appears and I can't do anything. I have opend iPhoto with the Option key pressed and rebuilt the library and it still happens.  I want to at least access my photos and copy them to an external drive. Anyone have ideas on how to get to them?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Help! Error 36 When I try and copy files to my external drive

Yesterday morning I discovered that I can't copy files from my desktop to my external hard-drive. The last time I performed this action was Saturday afternoon were all worked as normal, and to the best of my knowledge I've changed nothing on my system since then.
When I try to drag a file from the desktop to a folder on the external drive I get the message
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “X” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)
The external drive is the drive I use for my iTunes music files, and I've discovered this morning that I cannot import a CD to iTunes, however I can burn a playlist from iTunes to a CDr.
I'm using an iMac, and the external drive is a Western Digital 1TB (Journaled HFS+) connected via firewire.
I've seen references to similar issues through Google searches, but no definitive answer, can anyone help?

    I/O error -36 bummers!
It could mean that there are bad blocks on the disk. Backup everything on that external disk now, if you don't already have it. Unmount and disconnect the external. A -36 error could also be just a poorly connected cable, or a bad cable or port. Remove all cables and reconnect making sure the connections are tight.

  • Cannot copy files to/from external drive

    Hi All,
Bit of a cry for help.  I run an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.7.3 and I'm having some serious problems with an external drive.  Some history first - I have a large iTunes library (~3Tb) of everytype of media which I stored on an external NAS (iomega StorCenter) with no problems - then this NAS started to report a drive error with imminent failure.  I purchased a new DAS (Western Digital) drive and moved all my content from the NAS to the DAS and everything was ok.  Then I started to get errors through iTunes about cannot find the file and cannot read the files - and then I couldn't access anything on the drive.  At this time I thought this was a different problem because I was running preview Mountain Lion, or there was an actual fault with the disk.  After investigation, and coughing out for Data Rescue 3 I found that somehow the entire file structure had been corrupted and all my files had been orphaned.  So at this point I had one dying NAS drive and one DAS which wasn't usable and no space to recover any files to.
So - next step was to purchase another external drive (and returned the WD) - this time I went for a G-Raid 4Tb (non-thunderbolt) drive and I've been in the process of recovering files from backups and iTunes.  I've had no problems until today when yet again I've started getting errors and now I have problems copying files to/from this G-Raid drive.
      Technical details - OS-X 10.7.3 - G-Raid 4Tb formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - currently showing 1,163 folders and 15,452 files.
Symptoms - using finder drag and drop copy a file from the g-Raid to desktop results in 'The operation can't be completed because the item 'xxx' is in use. - 'The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (error code -43).' and the copy fails.
Using the cp command I get a 'Resource Busy' error.
However, this is not for all files - I've managed to copy all my books back to the desktop ok, when a couple came up with the above error I tried again and it copied successfully.
I have run Disk Utility - here are the details :-

I'm now out of ideas and when I got in touch with G-Tech support I got "Unfortunately the drive seems to have been corrupted. You can try to retrieve the data using third party data recovery software such as Data Rescue 3. You can find the software at a discounted rate at the following page:http://www.thedatarescuecenter.com/gtech-data-recovery-software.html  If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask."
any help/advice/pointers very much appreciated as I really don't want to have to start recovering again :-(
    Thanks all.

    Hi Ncat,
I might have had similar problems with yours. Finder stuck at 'Not Responding' while I boot my Macbook Pro with external HDD plugged in, my macbook heats up considerably maybe because it keeps trying to access the external disk. And Finder can only proceed after I unplugged my external hard disk.
    So what I did was:
I rebooted my macbook into recovery mode (by holding cmd+R before / during the booting chime
I used the Disk Utility from there (instead of from normal booting)
Then I proceed to with 'Repair Permissions' and 'Repair Disk' for each and every partition of the external harddisk, and also my internal hard disk.
Rebooted after everything's done, and now it seems to work.
I hope that it will work for you

  • Error -36 when trying to copy AVI files from External Drive to Mac

    Hi
Hoping for some help with a problem I appreciate others have faced.
I bought a new video camera recently and have just tried to copy the AVI files from the first few videos to my mac but am getting the error code 36 that states the files cannot be read or written.
The format of the camera is MS-DOS (FAT 32) but when I tried changing it to MAC OS Extended it did something to the camera so the mac could then not recognise it when I tried to re-connect it via the USB port.
I've been able to copy the files onto my friends Windows laptop no problem so don't believe them to be corrupt.
Have also tried the dot_clean fix but this didn't work.
Could there be another reason for the error? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I hear 3rd Party, or HW Raid 0/1/5/10 are OK, but 6 months is the absolute most I got out of my many screaming RAID setups before they completely lost it!
Bummer. I'm not really doing this for speed though, just for total storage volume and constant, worry-free, no-brainer back-up. I guess RIAD in general is something I need to study up on. Would a simple mirror of one 500GB drive to another (back-up) - and do that twice - be a better, more reliable way to go?
I've used Tri-Backup3/4 for years for Backups, it's fast, automatic, reliable, works in the background if you wish...
Back-up software always seemed to have some kind of a hiccup to it, but I'll certainly look into Tri-Backup3/4. I used to Retrospect years ago, a rather fussy thing if I recall.
Now, on the Safe Mode boot - not a success BUT a different result!
I got the -36 again, but this time it was the external drive FILE that errored, not the OS-resident drive.
In other words, pre-Safe Mode the error said "...because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written." (ZillaHAL is my OS-X drive).
In Safe, it read, "...because some data in "WinXP Pro.vmem" could not be read or written."
"WinXP Pro.vmem" is the virtual machine file - which basically is a simple Mac volume (folder) containing all of the files to run my XP virtual machine.
Also, this time, a file* did manage to remain on the external drive whereas before, after the error, no file at all remained.
    * a generic icon appears, but it shows a size of 16+GBs. The actual file is 18.13GB - I did manage to shrink it down the other day (from it's previous 25GB).
Well, that's it for now. I'll be away for three days, so don't mind me if I cannot reply back for a spell.
    Thanks BD,

  • Can I use Time Capsule to serve as an external drive with two different iMacs?

I want to be able to set up Time Capsule to serve as a backup drive for my iMac, as well as my wife's iMac.
So that we don't have to use two seperate back-up drives on each computer.
    Is this possible?

The following quote is from: https://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
Have multiple Mac computers in your home or office? AirPort Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. AirPort Time Capsule spares you the work. Your computers are always backed up — automatically and wirelessly.

  • System on external drive

I want to install the system on an external drive, so as to have a portable bootable disk. This seems to work fine, but the installer creates non-admin accounts on the external drive, and I end up with no admin acount, and no ability to use the accounts on the main internal drive. The latter is what I would like, of course.
That is, I would like the system on the external drive to use the accounts on the internal one. Can this be done?
    Thanks.

    byomtov wrote:
When you say "empty" external, do you mean no system, or completely blank?
    Yes, empty (erase it first).
Then you'll install Snow Leopard, select Do not transfer now and create a user account.   That will be an Admin account.  Then you can copy some things from the first (Admin) account on the internal HD.
But as noted above, the Snow Leopard version of some apps, such as Mail, will not work with the Lion version of the files/folders.
You can just copy some 3rd-party apps, but some that you got for Lion may not work on Snow Leopard.   Complex apps (that came with their own installers) will have to be reinstalled from the original discs (they put other files in other places, and won't work properly, if at all, unless you find and move them, too.  And some install "helper" apps that would need to be moved also.)
And no, you can't use Migration Assistant to go "backwards" and copy things from your Lion installation to your Snow Leopard volume.  That works great going "forwards" but there's no ability to go back.

  • Make a second copy on import to external drive and copy the file by date

In earlier versions I made second copies of files imported to an external hard drive.  The files would import and automatically create a capture date file folder in the same manner as importing by date to the primary internal drive.  At some point this feature seems to have gone away and now I get a folder on the external drive:  p:\\pictures\2014\Imported on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.  What I would like is:  p:\\pictures\2014\2014-04-22
Is there anyway to force this to happen?  I really hate having to manually move lots of files and create folders to keep the system I have had for years that organizes my files by date of capture on both the primary and backup drives.

Short answer: No. That is the way it is.
Why? The Make Second Copy during Import is designed to be a backup of your memory card processes-not a back up of your files as you store them on disk. It is intended to be a transient copy that allows you an immediate backup until such time as a File System Level backup can be performed, allowing you to have two copies so that you can reformat your memory cards.
I agree it would be nice if the folder storage strategy was duplicated for the backup as it is created for the import but that is not something you can set the program to do currently.  I remember it behaving differently versions ago but do not recall exactly how it used to work.

  • Best way to copy large folders to external drive?

What is the best way to transfer large folders across to external drives?
I'm trying to clean up my internal hard drive and want to copy a folder (including its sub folders) of approx 10GB of video files to an external firewire drive.
I've tried drag and drop in finder (both copy and move) and it gets stuck on a particular file and then aborts the whole process.
    1. Surely it should copy everything it can, and simply not copy the problem file.
    2. Is there a way I can do copy and verify, a bit like when I burn a disk so I can be sure the video files have transferred safely before I delete them from my internal drive?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

What you are trying to do makes perfect sense to me and I have done the same prior to getting myself a Time Machine system in place.
    1. Surely it should copy everything it can, and simply not copy the problem file.
The fact that it is getting stuck on a particular file suggests that there is a problem with it. Try to identify which one it is and deal with that file on it's own. It could be that there is a disk error where that file is stored.
    2. Is there a way I can do copy and verify....
The copy process you are using does that implicitly as I understand it.

  • Error code -36 when copying to Mac formatted external drive

I'm trying to move my iPhoto library to an external drive to save space on my iMac's hard drive. It starts to copy it fine but after a few minutes stops with the error "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
The external drive is an iomega minimax and is formatted as "Mac OS extended (journaled)". I'm running Mac OS 10.6.3 and the iPhoto Library is for iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5.
    Help! Thanks.

Kids birthday party today - sorry about the delay in replying.
This is an interesting problem, if disk integrity and space are not the problem.
My next step would be to use the command line to copy the library to your external disk. To do this, open Terminal and type:
    cp -R ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library /volumes/yourextenaldiskname/Pictures/
Note that, if you have any spaces in your external disk name, you will need to put a backslash in front of the spaces.
Let me know how it goes.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Copying files from one external drive to another external drive

I have a powerbook G4 (Mac OS X 10.4.11) with an external drive (WD Element 500GB) for store music and pictures. I am trying to copy the files from this drive to another (backup) drive (a LaCie 250CB). I do not use a backup software; I simply copy the folders\file onto to LeCie drive. For smaller size items I successfully copy\backup the files. However; I have a large 104GB iTunes library that I am trying to copy\backup onto the LeCie. The copying commences and 37GB into the process the copying ceases and the Powerbook freezes. The LaCie was once partitioned, but I reformatted without partitions.
Any ideas on what is wrong or what I can do to back up the 104GB iTune library.

First, I must correct the statement about maximum file size. FAT32 supports files up to 4 GB, minus 1 byte.
First, both drives do not need to be in MS DOS file format. WD Element is unintentionally in the MS DOS.
Then you can ignore any part of my post about NTFS, which is Microsoft's standard drive format for XP, Vista and the upcoming Windows 7. You want to reformat the WD Element drive for Mac OS Extended (HFS+).
Should I reformat the LaCie Drive to MS DOS from the Powerbook, then back up the WD Element?
No, format it as HFS+ so it is in Mac format (which I assume is where it is already), and can handle any size file you throw at it. Once duplicated and verified there, you can then reformat the WD Element drive as HFS+ and duplicate the information back.
In addition, why does my copy and paste work when I backup smaller folders (one is a iTune library of 17GB.
To which drive? If it's going to the LaCie drive, then it works since it's currently formatted for the Mac. It would (should) be impossible to copy a 17 GB file to any FAT32 (MS DOS) drive.
Also, would backup software help in backing up the WD Element? Someone suggested Carbon Copy Cloner.
Carbon Copy Cloner would work just fine. As would the non paid version of SuperDuper! With either, the destination drive must first be formatted as Mac OS Extended. Neither will recognize an MS DOS formatted drive.
