  • How to tell Front Row to look for movies on a USB drive?

I'm working on getting all my dvd's on two 500gb usb drives - using Handbrake to encode everything. This is much faster with a new 2.4ghz 24" iMac by the way (6-8hrs on my 1.8ghz athlon vs 1-2 with the iMac...woohoo).
What I'm trying to do is get the movies (on the usb drives) to show up in Front Row. One way I know of is by making an alias for each movie and moving the alias to my "Movies" folder on the main HD. This is a little tedious. When I simply drag and drop it in the "Movies" folder it just copies it and that is not what I want. Is there a way to just tell Front Row where to look for the movies? If I use iTunes the same thing happens, it just transfers all movies to the main HD...nevermind. I unchecked the box that said to copy everything.
The plan was on using iTunes for movies I encode specifically for iPods exclusively, searching through 600+ movies to get a few for the iPod doesn't seem user friendly.
So the question remains. Is there another way to get Front Row to just see the movies on another drive without iTunes or using an alias for each one or are those 2 my only choices?

I'm glad you got it figured out. Front Row actually looks for movie files in two places. First, as you've discovered, it looks inside your user's "Movies" folder. An alias there pointing to a different location will lead Front Row to the other location. Also, Front Row looks inside iTunes for movies. This way, it can find TV shows, music videos and movies purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Another option, besides making an alias in your "Movies" folder, would be to add the movies to iTunes.

  • 15 minutes to move 200MB to USB drive on new express

15 minutes to move 200MB to USB drive on new Airport Express.
    does this seem normal?

    That is slower than expected.
An 802.11b machine (like a Ti Powerbook G4) should take about 7 minutes - under ideal conidtions although 20 mins would not be surprising.
In ideal conditions - the 12" Powerbook should be able to do it in 1-2 mins using 802.11g. I would hope to to see at least a megabyte moved each second.
The Macbook, if upgraded to 802.11n should be even faster. Perhaps 30 seconds.
There could be a bunch of reasons why you are not seeing this. Interference, distance, other networks. Also if your USB device is slow for some reason, it could be a factor.

  • Finder freezes when copying files to an external USB drive

I am copying video TS folders from my Mac Pro to a USB 3.0 drive, and Finder keeps freezing up. Oddly, it doesn't always happen, and it doesn't seem to be the amount of data--I've successfully copied 32GB at once, and had Finder crash trying to copy 6GB. Other details: the external drive is brand-new, and set up for OS X, I have repaired the permissions on the Mac's drive and just for kicks did the same on the Seagate USB drive. I was originally copying the files from a folder I had on the desktop, and read here that the desktop being involved in the equation is a Finder-killer, so I moved the files to a different folder. I have done this a lot in the past to a different drive with no problems whatsoever. Lastly, when this happens, all I can do a hard restart. Everything is fine when it starts back up, but after a dozen restarts in a day, I'm about to shoot myself.

Well, I can tell you this
    Mac's can't use USB 3 so it's dropping to USB 2
If it's port powered, it could be drawing too much power and the Mac is cutting it off, use a powered USB hub.
If the external drive is formatted MBR with FAT32 (MSDOS) then that's a issue with over 4GB sized files, you need exFAT or HFS+
You may nee dot remove all data and Zero Erase the entire drive to map off bad sectors and before each time you copy a huge amount of data (if it hasn't ben done in the last 6 months) this catches new failing sectors.

  • Can't copy a particular photo to USB drive!?

I tried to copy a few photos to a USB drive.  When copying one by one, all but one copies across.  On the problem photo, I get "The volume is the wrong format for a backup."  This happens only on that one photo.  The photos are all jpg formats.  The problem photo is not the biggest or smallest in size.
The USB disk and partition are formated MSDOS-FAT.  Using Disk Utility, I erased the partition and disk, and retried to no avail.
A last note, is that the problem photo is the only one I tinkered with in iPhoto to brighten the shadows.
    Any ideas?

Because FAT is a bad drive format - for example it will only handle a small number of files - this photo may have been the nth + 1 on a drive that will hold N files
It has other strange properties too - putting the photos in a folder eliminates most of the issues

  • Can't move playlist onto USB drive

Have an Itunes playlist of about 800 songs. I've tried time and again to drag the songs onto a USB drive, to no avail. Most of the time either nothing happens, or I see the songs "return" to the itunes window. Sometimes it works if I only select about 15-20 or so of the songs at a time. Is there any easier way to do this??

it is possible that the USB drive doesn't have enough space for all 800 songs. most drives don't have enough space. if you are intending to transfer them to another computer, you might just have to take 15-20 songs at a time, which can be tedious, but at least it gets the job done. another option is setting your iTunes to share your library, then you can pick and choose certain songs from your library to transfer to another.
    hope that helps!

Not without hacking the Apple TV. No publicly available device is officially supported by its USB port; it's there for Apple's service and testing use only.

  • Is there a way to copy a movie that I've purchased that resides in iTunes onto a thumb drive?

I have a mini projector that I would like to play movies on.  All of my digital movies live in iTunes.  Is there a way to copy the movies onto a thumb drive so that I can plug it in and watch them on my mini projector?  I don't want to have to load up my phone with movies and take up all the space.

You can easily copy it by dragging it from iTunes playlist to the drive in Finder but it won't do you any good.  iTunes Store movies only play back on devices running Apple software.  You would have to connect your projector to a computer or Apple mobile device.

  • Toshiba Satellite A300-129 Crisis Recovery Mode Phoenix BIOS with USB drive

When flashing my BIOS back from v4.20 to a v3.90 I found on the net, everything went alright in windows, but as soon as I rebooted, the laptop showed the symptoms of a failed BIOS.
I'm now trying to repair the BIOS using the crisis recovery tool. I used the following procedure to create the USB stick and recover the BIOS
-Run the WINCRIS.Exe file in administrator and compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)
-Select the USB drive (1GB Kingston), and format it with the tool
-Reinsert the drive and format again with the tool without restarting it to be sure that the disk is properly formatted
-Take the BL5S3D57.WPH file from the toshiba BIOS update and rename it to BIOS.WPH, and copy to the Crisdisk directory
-Copy the files BIOS.WPH (the one from toshiba I renamed), minidos.sys and winphlash16.exe to the drive in windows
    -Take the drive out
-Plug battery out, plug AC out of laptop, hold the power button for a few seconds to make sure no remaining current is in the laptop
    -Plug the USB Drive in
-Hold Fn+Esc in my case, this is the key combination where the laptop tries to read the USB drive the moment it boots up. It has something to do with enabling a boot block in the BIOS with that key combination.
-Plug AC in while still holding the F button
The F button does not nescessarily need to be held while plugging in AC, the laptop also tries to read from the drive if I hold it after plugging AC in, and before pushing the power button.
    -Press the power button
I need to push the button twice, because the first time after plugging in AC the power button doesn't do a thing. When holding the power button for around 10 seconds after right after plugging AC in, the laptop boots sometimes, didn't find a pattern yet here.
The easy thing however is to just push the button 2 or 3 times, then it boots, and the booting procedure seems exactly the same as when holding the power button
-Wait for the LED to flash on the USB Drive. Very important: it seems to only flash ONCE for me, so it means it tries to access the drive, but I think it doesn't contain the right files or isn't formatted correctly. If I keep holding the F button while the laptop is on, the LED flashes once every 10-20 seconds.
From here on out the laptop is supposed to be reading the BIOS files from the USB drive, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. So here comes my question:
What could I be doing wrong in formatting the drive or writing the files to it?
Do I have the wrong CRISDISK? Is it normal that the files arent copied by CRISDISK to the USB Drive and that I have to do it myself?
Am I using the wrong WinPhlash? Or should I use the files that are supplied in the official BIOS rar from toshiba?
I have tried different versions of CRISDISK, different USB Drives (one 4GB would not be read by the broken laptop, and another 1GB would not be read by CRISDISK when trying to format the drive)
Tried different files on the USB Drive, tried bios.wph instead of capitals, tried BIOS.FD,...
I'm kind of running out of options here to try. Is there anyone who has experience with this recovery mode flashing that could tell me what I might be doing wrong? Or that has any suggestions on which other CRISDISK or toshiba updates to use?
Thanks anyways to people who read this and try to help!

I hope that Russian service provider will be as honest as the European one and won't solder something out as a souvenir :)
They said, it will take approximately a week.
Serviceman said that L30 has no built-in crisis recovery routine.
So I wasted money by buying an USB floppy disk drive and risked to burn something in my laptop by frequent powering it on and off (and may be burnt, will see).
The lesson I learnt is never flash BIOS if everything works and if even flash then not from Windows (btw. I flashed successfully my Satellite A300 from Windows without any problems).
Phoenix makes its BIOSes since 2001 with a crisis recovery boot block, but Toshiba locks this feature in many laptops, I think, not without a reason. Service providers want money too :)

  • Problems installing CS4 by flash/USB drive

I purchased the DVD-Roms late last year to install CS4. The programs successfully installed on my laptop, which recently died and is in the shop. But I never was able to install them on the desktop and would like to do so. When I put the DVDs into my DVD reader (which doesn't normally have problems reading things), it grinds away but cannot read the disks. My attempted solution was to copy the programs on a USB drive. In disc 1 I selected "autoplay" and most of the programs are installed but still not useable until I can get the second disc to also install.
Now I have a message, "Please insert Adobe CS4 Design Premium into drive E:\ to continue installation.
    - If I put the application disc 2 in the drive, it revs but does not actually read the disc.
    - On the USB folder sitting on my desktop for Application 2, my options are:
         -- extensions
         -- payloads
-- autorun (Which sounds good. But I click on it and it just opens a text editor that says [autorun] icon=cs4_designprem_disc.ico)
         -- cs4_designprem_disc (Opens to show an icon/graphic)
This is not a space issue because last time, I downloaded the "trial version" of CS4 from the website when it was available and then would manually enter my serial number. I wiped the hard drive. Now customer support says there are no links available online to CS4 since CS5 is soon available.
Any suggestions on how to get application disc 2 installed too, from the USB drive if possible?

Download on the iMac OS X Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0 and create a USB recovery disk.
Use that USB disk to boot your MBP retina.
Use the Terminal, that you find inside the recovery environment, to perform these commands
Verifiy that the main internal disk is labelled /dev/disk0
    diskutil list
this command will completely erase the internal disk. Please change /dev/disk0 if your is different, (it should not).
diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" GPT /dev/disk0
Verify that you just have 3 partition, no more Recovery HD partition
    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            499.2 GB   disk0s2
Quit Terminal and proceed with Reinstall Mac OS X
It'll take a lot of time, depending on the speed of your internet connection.
Please, do not hesitate to ask if you are in doubt
