Copying songs using playlists

Ok so I have manually added my music to my touch, now what I want to do is to restore it and copy the music back on, but I don't want to have to manually go through my library again to copy files. Is there a way that I can use a playlist to copy files over?
What I am thinking is that I can create a playlist of all the songs currently on the touch, copy this playlist back to itunes, restore my touch- then will the act of copying the playlist from itunes back onto the touch automatically copy all associated tracks aswell? Or is there a better way of doing this (i.e. creating a separate library on itunes for my touch?)
Thanks
B

maybe I've not been clear - I only want to use this playist once just to copy the associated tracks over first time.
For example - say I have a blank ipod touch with no tracks on it, and I have a playlist in Itunes on my mac with a large selection of tracks in it. If I copy this playlist over to the touch will itunes also copy over all the tracks as well, or would I have to do this manually?

  • I copy songs into playlists that I create.  And when I sync my iPod, the songs disappear.  How do I stop this from happening?

I have an iPod nano version 1.0.4.  I've created playlists on my iTunes and copied songs into them.  But whenever I sync my iPod nano, the songs disappear from the playlists.  They stay in the main library, however.  Does anybody know of a way to keep them from disappearing from my playlists?

It's a plain old playlist (with a folder icon next to it).  One more fact to complicate things.  I just had my hard drive replace under a recall from Apple.  Before I replaced it, plain old playlists worked fine.
But I may have just solved the problem.  When I was having the problem, I was creating the playlists by going into the "File" tab and clicking "New Playlist Folder".  This time I clicked the + sing in the lower left hand corner of the iTunes window.  Instead of a file folder icon, there's now a musical note.  And the songs now seem to be staying.  I'll also play with the smart playlists and see if that help too.  Thanks B-Rock for inspiring me to explore a bit more.

  • Copying Songs to Playlists Deletes Information!

    Hi,
I've got a Classic 120GB 2008/9 iPod, and everytime I iTunes try and copy and paste one song from a playlist to another, iTunes displays all playlists, folders, etc as containing 0 songs when you highlight them, and displays no songs. Apart from use of the iPods file structure/contents, the other iTunes features work ok (navigating to store etc) i.e. it doesn't seem ot be freezing. I can't use any of the iTunes features when this happens so makes the whole thing useless! Ctrl-zing to undow the pasting doesn't do anything, but if I restart iTunes, so far, it re-shows the information. Any help on this would be really appreciated! Just ask for any more info you need.
    Thank you!

Is all your media in your iTunes library? Any issues with the classic can normally be resolved by restoring it and reloading the content. It also makes more sense to adjust the playlists in iTunes and then sync the changes to the device.
If you've been manually managing the content and it isn't in your library see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. It is too easy for the data on the device to become permanently corrupt for you to rely on it as the only location holding your media.

how do i copy an ipod playlist into itunes- the songs are already in my library

I found out an easy way....
With iPod connected to iTunes, right click on the iPod playlist you want to export, choose the Export option on the menu that appears.
iTunes will prompt for a location and format to save the file.  Save playlist as an XML file using whatever name and location you want (I saved as "songs.XML" to my desktop).
Then, in iTunes, go to File - Library - Import Playlist and selet the XML file.  The playlist will be created in the iTunes library and will contain any tracks that are refereced in the original playlist that already exists in the library.
There may be a mesage, "Some of the songs in the (filename).XML were not imported because they could not be fund".  This is because the songs you are importing have to already be in your iTunes library.
I just did this with my kid's iPod and it worked great.  I found this tip on Apple Support Communities (discussions.apple.com/thread/2577582?start=0&tstart=0).  It was posted by SpyglassSally and my original search question in Goole was was, "How do i copy a playlist from an iPod to iTunes".
Thanks for the responses and I hope this helps anyone else.

Right click the filename that won't download and selsct 'Get Info'. Look at the file path, does it have a //?// in it? That is a problem with Amazon downloads that prevent iTunes from finding the file. Use 'Add Folder' to add the album to your library and try syncing it again

Used ipod as a drive to copy songs into new itunes on new computer. Some songs do play in entirety, last 30 seconds to minute cuts off with nothing plyaing, or it suddenly starts playing a different song. "TIme" shown is correct in the file. Any way to fix this?

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

  • How do I keep iTunes from copying songs from iCloud to playlist?

  • How can I copy songs from one iPod to another?

I received a new iPod Classic (last generation) and I'm trying to transfer my songs from my old iPod Nano (also last generation).
My iTunes library is also split up between my two parent's houses and I only have half the songs on my Nano in this computer's library.
Is there a way to copy only the songs on the +iPod Nano+ (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?

*Is there a way to copy only the songs on the iPod Nano (not the iTunes library) and drop them onto the new iPod?*
You can't copy directly from one iPod to another, you have to copy the songs back to iTunes and update the new iPod from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • I have a new iMac and i created two libraries on iTunes. how do i copy songs from one library to the other?

I have a new imac. I created two libraries, one for me, one for my kids. how do I copy songs from one library to the other library?

Not easy unless you're just content with adding some files to the other as new files but lose playlists for those files, and playcount, and ratings, etc.  If you're okay with that, you can drag the media folder from one library to the other. If you use default settings and want to duplicate the media, just drag it. If you want to add the media but leave it where it is currently located, hold down the option key while dragging to the library window.

  • Can I get all my songs and playlist to a Flash dirve to play in the car now the large iPod is no more?

Hello, so I have read a few discussions on transferring songs/playlist to a flash drive. But what I am looking for is can I replace my iPod classic in my car with a flash drive? So I have all my songs and playlist just like the iPod. And how do I do this?
I have a Ford with My Ford Touch, so it can find its own album art, but I do want the playlists. I have the same song in multiply playlist so I don't want to have multiply copies of the same song one the drive.
It seems that most iPods classics are in use in the car these days so there must be some easy way to replace them with they no longer work.

I doubt that "most iPods classics are in use in the car these days."  iPod classic uses a delicate hard drive for storage (instead of flash storage) plus it has other sensitive parts like the display and battery, so it is prone to damage from shock, heat, cold, etc.  The car environment is not so ideal for iPods (especially the ones with hard drives).  It's ideal for a USB flash drive.  They are now relatively cheap per GB.  They have no moving parts, or screen, or battery, so you can just leave it connected to the USB port most of the time; you don't have to constantly connect and disconnect it, which causes wear for an iPod.  Get something like this, and it barely sticks out from the USB port.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33016G/
You should be able to copy song files to a USB flash drive using iTunes, by showing a list of songs in iTunes, selecting songs on the list, and dragging the selection from the iTunes window to a Windows Explorer window that shows the USB flash drive.
Depending on the car audio system, it may recognize folders on the USB flash drive as "playlists."  As a test, try putting some folders at the top level of the flash drive, with names to represent playlists.  Then, add a few song files to those folder, and try it on the car audio system.

  • How do I get my songs and playlists from an external hard drive into iTunes?

I have got all of my songs and playlists on an external drive from my PC. I just bought a mac and can't understand the directions to get my songs and playlists up and running in iTunes...Can anyone help?

If you backed the library up by drag-copying it, drag-copy it to the same location on the new computer. If you backed up an entire iTunes library, you can also drag it to any location, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and specify it.
If you used a backup product, check that product’s documentation.
The song files must be located on the computer’s internal drive for them to play without the external one connected. If needed, organize the library in iTunes.
