Copying T20 Win98SE hidden partition/software
I'm dealing with a T20 2647-46U that has the Win98 SE install and drivers on a pre-boot service partition.
It took forever to locate just the utility on the IBM/Lenovo web site to restore the F11 prompt at boot to regain access to the partition. (That utility was never included with IBM tools on this pre-install. At least not on the version of Win98SE they put on this T20.)
The problem is: I can't find the appropriate IBM utility to create an image of the service partition to back it up. It used to be on the sight in the pre-Lenovo days. It probably is still there, but finding things is a lot harder since Lenovo took over. As I recall, it was a floppy based program that allowed you to create an ISO image of the pre-installed software in order to back it up. Once you created the backup image you could burn it to CD afterward. This is all very much predating Lenovo Rescue and Recovery v3.01 which isn't supported on a T20.
Does anyone know where that utility is to backup the pre-installed software partition on a t20? I want to install something else, but I would rather back up the hidden partition first.
Thanks.
I think you must do a complete disk backup.
You can use software such Norton Ghost.
Best regards.

For anyone else who wants to upgrade their hard drive I offer the following solution.
The problem is that simply copying the C: drive over to the new hard drive doesn't work. The new drive hangs when booting. It turns out that Lenovo in its wisdom(?) requires that a hidden partition must be copied as well, the IBM_Service partition of 5.1G. I tried multiple ways of copying the drive that did not work
- Apricorn EZ copy didn't see my new drive at all - that may well be because I was working with a 2004 version - they haven't responded to my email questioning that.
- DriveImage XML copied the C: drive with no problem, but couldn't see the hidden partition in copying mode.
What worked?
I used my copy of Acronis True Image 11 to do the copying, making sure to keep the hidden partition the exact same size since I'd had indications in a Lenovo forum that was important.
Just boot from the CD. You'll have to use the manual mode.
The interface is a bit unnerving because you keep having to go "back" to really go to the next step in making the partitions the size you want. Other than that it works very well.
This worked flawlessly. The machine booted with no problems. I now have three times the disk space.

Resize/Slim/Removed Hidden Partition: The ultimate guide Part I
Claimer:
The author of this post is NOT responsible for any consequence resulted from adopting the methods of this post.
Section 0: Why bother to Tame a Preinstalled system?
0.1. Preinstalled system comes with unwanted applications
0.2. Prepartitioned disk may not suit the end uers needs.
0.3. Hidden partition takes too much space
Section 1: Tools needed
1.1. Backup tools, such as Ghost v.11 or Acronis TrueImage
1.2. Disk Management tools, such as Acronis Disk Director or Diskgen.exe. (The latter of which is a tiny, but powerful disk management tool that runs in Win98 and (but in Chinese GUI) allows to edit disk partition parameters). I use the latter almost all the time.
1.3. Bootup disk, such as DOS, Win98 bootup disk. Preferably Win98 since it recognizes external usb key/disk
Section 2: Before you start
2.1. Understanding Hard Disk geometry: (Google if the reader needs more information)
Each hard disk comes with a disk geometry which includes the configuration scheme of the total cylinders, heads and sectors of the whole disk. Such a scheme is presented is CHS or LBA values. Use disk management tools to view the disk geometry information and write down the CHS information of each partition, especially, the partition boundary information.
Usually, a partition starts with CHS=*- 0-1 and ends with CHS=*- *-63, where the second * in the ending value may quite well be 239. So, let us assume this is the disk geometry.
To be more detailed
a) The MBR takes CHS=0-0-1
b) The first primary partition starts from CHS=0-1-1 and ends at CHS=*-239-63, where * corresponds to the cylinder number that depends on partition size.
c) The second and the third primary partitions start from CHS=*-0-1 and end at CHS=*-239-63
d) But the fourth primary partition, which includes all logical partitions, starts from CHS=*-0-1 and ends at CHS=*=239-63. Specifically, each logical partition starts from CHS=*-1-1 and ends at CHS=*-239-63.
Such information is needed since with the prepartitioned hard disk, the second primary, where preinstalled windows xp/vista resides, does NOT start at the correction boundary, which should be CHS=*-0-1 and CHS=*-239-63. Thus when restoring the os by Acronis TrueImage, the application will report an error message <..disk size does not match ...> , in which case please set the partition to start from CHS=*-0-1 and end at CHS=*-239-63.
Violation of the generic disk geometry will result in Partition Magic reporting errors, such as <the partition does not end on/start from boundary>
2.2 Understanding Partition Table.
a) The MBR stores the partition table for the whole disk and stores the boot record for the OS whose booting record is injected in the MBR. Error in MBR will cause boot failure, disk read error, partition table loss or complete data loss. In the last two cases, do not write anything into the disk or format it, use data recovery tools to recover the partition table and data by binary searching techniques.
b) Each logical partition uses CHS=*-0-1 to store its boot record (which includes partition type, pointer to the file allocation table). This is why each logical partition starts from CHS=*-1-1
CAUTION: DO NOT ERASE ANY BOOT RECORD INFORMATION UNLESS YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THE DATACAUTION: DO NOT ERASE ANY BOOT RECORD INFORMATION UNLESS YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THE DATA
Section 3: The real Taming
2.3. Install the needed tools.
a) Install a copy of Acronis TrueImage and Acronic Disk Director.
b) backup the Hidden partition to an external usb disk
c) Use Acronis disk director resize the partition (but not always the hidden partition) and if necessary, restore a copy of windows vista/xp via the System Recovery.
or if a completely new disk configuration is wanted, please see 2.4
2.4. Extreme Taming
Caution: Operations here in this subsection are only for ADVANCED PC USERS WITH DATA RECOVERY EXPERIENCE AND A FULL UNDERSTAING OF DISK PARTITION PARAMETERS
A) Back up the hidden partition with ghost v11 and also with Acronis TrueImage (the reason to make up two backup copies will be explained in 2.4-F), say, into hiddenpt.tib or hiddenpt.gho, and check file integrity after imaging until everything is proved correct.
B) Bootup with win98 disk and format the whole disk with Partition Magic or diskgen.exe. Do not partition the disk with many different tools since they may assign to the same disk different disk geometries and cause compatibility issues.
C) Usually, linux users will set up a primary partition with ext3 file format and install lilo or grub bootup loader in the first section of the root partition since windows operation systems will intentionally replace the boot record in the mbr by their own.
D) So, usually, an advanced user will have 3 primary partitions: one for the hidden partition, another for a windows os, the rest for a windows os or a linux distridution. (I take this scheme) and then, set up a swap partition and some logical partitions
E) Up until now, do not copy precious data onto the newly partitioned disk since an extremely dangerous operation will be carried out if need be
F) slim the hidden partition
G) Now Copy hiddenpt.tib or hiddenpt.ghot to some directory (backing up something is always worthwhile) (since editing the .tib or .gho file will change its contents and a copeid one for editing will assure that the original backup copy of the hidden partition is always intact) Mount the backup image file, say, hiddenpt.tib, in read/write mode, by AcronisTrueImage or by ghostv11 if you have another windows os, or if not, restore a copy of the windows os from the hidden partition (if it is still intact) (or from hiddenpt.gho if it happens to be destroyed) and install acronic trueimage and mount the hiddenpt.tib file in read and write mode. The reason two backup copies are needed is because Acronis TrueImage needs a windows os to run (or if a winpe with acronis trueimage integrated is available, then one copy is enough) but it is much safer to use Acronis TrueImage to edit a backup .tib file than to use ghost v11 to edit a backup .gho file. -
G780 hard drive issues/hidden partition
I just bought a manufacturer refurbished (allegedly) g780 with a 500 GB hard drive. I did a clean install of Win 8, downloaded a bunch of updates from Microsoft, and then updated to Win 8.1 and downloaded a bunch of drivers and utilities from Lenovo.
With that out of the way, the Lenovo Solution Center prompted me to perform a hardware scan, which found errors in my drive and gave me this code: WHD01V00I-HJ9V6L (the drive failed the targeted read test and the SMART short self-test). I scanned the drive with windows error checking, fixed the errors it found, and when scanning the drive again I'm told no errors were found, however the Solution Center still gives me the same errors.
Here's where it gets interesting. The hardware scan also indicated that my hard drive is in fact 1 TB in size, and using testdisk to have a look at my partitions I found a 450 GB Ubuntu partition (along with a Linux swap partition) that I can browse through and recover files from. I wanted to boot into this partition but didn't know how to go about it.
So my primary concern is about the hard drive and whether it's a ticking time bomb, hoping that perhaps those errors are caused by the hidden partition and the drive is physically fine. And if the drive is in good shape I'd like to get rid the Ubuntu partition and reclaim all that space.
Can anyone help me figure out what's going on with my machine?Hello
This partition is about 1,5 GB and I think it is not so important for you if you have 160 GB HDD. I believe you will not use it till the last byte is used. Am I right?
To be honest I would like to know what you mean with copy. After HDD upgrade use recovery media and make clean OS installation. After doing this copy all your important files to new HDD. I recommend you also to create two or more partitions. The first one for OS, and other for data saving.
What you can also do is to create own recovery image after finishing with clean OS installation and configuration. I have done the same. Now if something goes wrong I can make my own OS installation anytime and save a lot of time installing all applications. -
Create hidden partition?
I am wanting to create a hidden partition, similar to the way Apple creates the recovery partition. Is this possible? That is, I could boot to the partition by holding down the option key, but it doesn't show up elsewhere. Searching has led me to some suggestions about modifying the /etc/fstab file to keep it from mounting, which is a step in the right direction (and could work if it's the best I can do) but the recovery partion goes a step farther, as it doesn't even show up in disk utility. Is there a way I can acomplish the same thing? Thanks.
Here is solution for this issue (Source: Apple Stack Exchenge)
Borrow a trick from Apple - set the partition type to something besides Apple_HFS. The Apple_Boot partition type is used by Lion Recovery, and should provide the exact behavior you want. This process is NOT for the faint-of-heart, and you should definitely have a backup. If any of this process is unclear, DO NOT DO IT. Note that all numbers and drive names will be different on your computer.
First, determine which "BSD disk" your target drive is. Very likely disk1, but not necessarily. For example, this is my current system:
bash-3.2$ diskutil list /dev/disk0 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk0 1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1 2: Apple_HFS Macintosh SSD 119.2 GB disk0s2 3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3 /dev/disk1 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *320.1 GB disk1 1: EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1 2: Apple_HFS Secondary HD 319.7 GB disk1s2
What follows is a copy-paste-edit job from Dmitry Dulepov:
We need to change the type of this partition. This involves noting partition parameters, deleting and creating a patition with gpt. Firsts, let find out parameters:
bash-3.2$ sudo gpt show disk1 start size index contents 0 1 PMBR 1 1 Pri GPT header 2 32 Pri GPT table 34 6 40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B 409640 246725744 2 GPT part - 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 247135384 262144 247397528 1269528 3 GPT part - 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 248667056 1402591 250069647 32 Sec GPT table 250069679 1 Sec GPT header
Next, delete and add the partition. Note that we use values found on the previous step.
bash-3.2$ sudo gpt remove -b 247397528 -s 1269536 -t 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC disk1 disk0s3 removed bash-3.2$ sudo gpt add -b 247397528 -s 1269536 -t 426F6F74-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC disk0 disk1s3 added
Notice the different GUID. That is important because it tells OS X the type of the partition.
Check if everything is ok:
bash-3.2$ diskutil list disk1
You should see what had previously been an Apple_HFS partition should be listed as Apple_Boot. Such partitions are bootable on an Intel Mac without being auto-mounted by a running system. Repeat this general process with each partition that you want to "hide" normally. -
Possible to repair the hidden partition on T61p?
Hi,
it seems that my hidden partition has been damaged (not physically). Strange things happen when proceeding to a restore, mainly some software i had when i received the thinkpad isn't present after the "factory" restore....
Restoring with the cds i created doesn't fix it.
Is there a way to repair, or anyway to get the hidden partition in exactly the same "shape" it was when I bought the laptop at the retailer (less than 2 weeks ago)?
thank you
T61p 6460-D8G, Vista (downgrade to XP soon...), T9300, Quadro FX570M, 15,4' WUXGA...i'm not sure that i've listed everything, but at least:
- Office trial, as you mentioned it (didn't even have time to use it...Do you know where i can download it? Lenovo or Microsoft?)
- Rescue and recovery at least, maybe other TV utilities, but i didn't take time to check everything yet....
The thing is, i would like to repair the hidden partition, get it in "brand new" status, create recovery CDs, so that I have the system as it came, sealed, from the retailer + the recovery set, all of that with Vista. I would preciously ("my preciousssss" :-) ) keep that in a box.
After that, i will put in the laptop a new hard disk drive I'm about to buy (7200rpm 320Go 2.5 SATA...), and install XP on it (hopefully from the Lenovo downgrade kit that came with my thinkpad)

Win XP (in dual boot) is seeing a hidden partition
Hi everybody!
I'm having some difficult in install a win xp in dual boot with win 7 (which came with the G550 notebook).
I modified the D: (Lenovo) partition to a primary partition to install the XP. Also I installed the EasyBCD to manage the boots and both S.O. load fine.
The problem is that Win XP is seeing a boot partition (the first partition on disk) with 200MB that is hidden for Win 7 ! So this partition takes the C: letter in XP and mess all the configuration once that many programs uses the C: as a default letter.
The disk is divided in (approx):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
160GB with Win 7 installed
40GB with Win XP installed
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Someone has any idea who to solve this problem or to do a XP installation from the beginning without problems?
Thanks a lot!first of all, i'm not sure windows xp works on your system.
secondly, you need to install previous operation system before. you can not install xp on windows 7 or vista.
if you do that, you may need to change boot volume or make changes on volumes. but one key recover will stop working.
so, i suggest you not. -
How to get rid of hidden partitions display in Disk Utility?
Running Snow Leopard I used the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1) to enable the Disk Utility Debug Menu. I then turned on the Show Every Partition so I could see the hidden partitions (but grayed out) in the disk/volume list. I then turned off Show Every Partition and they became hidden again. I disabled the Debug Menu using the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 0). The Debug menu went away, but the hidden partitions still show up again after quitting and restarting DU. Rebooting computer doesn't help either.
It appears that display of all partitions is permanent. Does anyone have ideas on what to do to get back to the default display?I stumbled on the answer. When I just quit Disk Utility the hidden partitions come back on restarting DU. If I select Close from the File menu, the display of the hidden partitions goes away and doesn't come back after quitting and restarting DU.

VMWare Fusion partition software doesn't work in Yosemite, why?
Very outdated. You need V7
And FYI, this software has nothing to do with partitioning, it neither creates nor needs one. -
We have created two partitions in removable drive(USB). One of the partition is active and the other is hidden. We are trying to access the hidden partition in Win PE 3.0 environment using WMI. VBScript code snippet used to detect the partitions is given
below:-
SetobjWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:"_&
"{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\"&
strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
SetcolDisks = objWMIService.ExecQuery

It will return the partition which is active but fails to list the partition which is hidden. The same piece of code was supported on WinPE 2.0I am giving the complete code, may be you are able to understand better. How to make the RESCUE AND RECOVERY hidden partition when changing the hard disk drive
I've got T61 and I'd like to know if is it possible (in case of changing the HDD) to make the RESCUE AND RECOVERY hidden partition on the new hard disk drive? If yes - please let me know how to do that.
hi you the rescue partition is made automatically when you use your recovery cd's on the new HDD so no problem there!

How to delete the hidden partition (about 35 GB) on my H430 HDD?
Hello dear sirs/madams
I want to delete the hidden partition in my H430 desktop. It came with DOS. I am unable to use OneKey Recovery after the reseller installed Windows 7 Ultimate x32. And it is showing the hard disk capacity is 465 GB in my 500 GB HDD. I googled and found that it has a hidden partition. I am unable to delete it using diskpart because it doesn't show the partition. Here's the screenshot of diskpart.

Please tell me if I can still use OneKey Recovery.
Please guide me. I am using Windows 8 Pro x64.

Hi,
I'm planning on messing with my system a little (re-partition, install linux) and I want a full-proof recovery plan. This should work in case I *completely* mess up my HD (bad boot records, destroyed partitions, etc.)
I have an external hard drive with plenty of free space. How would I make a completely backup; something that would restore everything (including the hidden partition) to its current state?
Is there any way to do this using free/opensource?
Keep in mind that if there's a linux app that can do this, I can just boot up using a live CD and run the app from there.
Thanks in advance.Vista or XP? What is/was the partition layout? IIRC, w/XP the 2nd partition is the service partition (hd0,1) and with Vista it is the first (hd0,0). I don't know if that is always the case, so how is your drive layed out?
ISTR that with XP the service partition is "hidded' by using an ID of 12 (or something) even though it is a FAT32 partition. Grub might be unhappy with the ID. Changing it to "C" might let it boot. That's just a WAG. My recollection is that the ID only affected where I could install the grub files, not what I could boot.
I've got some old notes here somewhere: www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadT61.htm maybe in "partitioning" or Windows XP.
**** grrr. the insert link thingy isn't working. the link above is literally correct, but the forum is inserting some invisible characters ****
I don't know clonezillla. Will it let you restore only one of the partitions? If so, do a restore to factory (with the recovery media you made immediately on receiving the laptop) and then restore only the Vista or XP partition from clonezilla.
HTH,
Z.
