does any one know?

If I understand you correctly you want to fill a HDD in a USB- enclosure, take out the HDD and put it into the ix2-case?
That willnot work because first of all the disk format will not fit (USB-drives typically run FAT32 or NTFS which will not fit to IX2) Secondly the USB drive is missing the NAS- operating system.
So if it is that what you want: no way...

  • Will Restore in Leopard Disk Utility reliably copy a drive with bootcamp?

I have a drive partitioned part OS X and part Bootcamp (with Windows XP installed). If I use Apple's Disk Utility to 'Restore' the drive (to copy the drive to a larger drive) will this work reliably for bootcamp as well as the OS X content? Presumably this just clones the drive?

Once you install MacFUSE you can not use the Startup Disk Utility anymore to boot into Windows, you need to hold the option key every time.
As you stated, NTFS is owned by Microsoft, its their proprietary format and has many different versions of it. I don't think any company has the full right to format NTFS which basically comes down that you can not complain to any of the companies or MS about data loss.
My idea with an image is that I can always read it, so in case the WinClone format or write fails I still have all my files (and not just parts of it). Since I am booted the most amount of time on Mac OS X anyway I don't care that a script creates an entire mirror image of my current Windows drive overnight.
I actually have several basic images that I can always restore in case I want to clean up my drive.

  • New larger, copied hard drive won't start up Mac Pro

I have a 250 GB hard drive that is almost full. I copied this drive onto a 1TB drive using disk utility.
(I have a 1TB drive in bay 2 and 1TB in bay 3 set up as a RAID 0). I tried to select this new larger drive as my start-up disk and I get a grey screen with "cannot find the driver for this platform" amongst other comments. I switched the new drive over to bay 1 with the same results. I tried selecting this from system preferences>startup (.....it shows up as a choice to pick) and with holding down option while starting up (shows up there too).

With internal drives, you don't need to worry or manually change format option.
If you click on the raw unformatted drives (WDxxxx etc) it will do everything for you.
Clicking on the drive (not the volume) will show in the status field at the bottom.
Click on WDxxxx and going to the PARTITIONS tab and a second window to change it from the DEFAULT GUID to another format (Master Boot Record for Windows, or older PPC format Apple Partition) use to be but isn't required or necessary.
I wish they would change ERASE for just VOLUMES and use INITIALIZE or FORMAT for when using ERASE to prepare a drive the first time. But no one listens.

  • Copy of drive larger than original

I'm replacing a 750GB HDD with a 960GB SDD.  Using the finder, I copied 713GB of data from the old drive to the new, empty drive. Strangely, the data is using 897GB of space on the new drive.  Thinking that it may have been a finder-copy issue with a large chunk of data, I erased the new drive and used third-party software to mirror the data to the new drive.  The result was the same.  Disk Utility finds no trouble with either drive.  Is there an explanation for this?

It is also possible that compressed files on the original were decompressed during the copy to the SSD.  That is a total guess.
NOTE:  When I switched my Macbook Pro from an HDD to an SSD, I used Carbon Copy Cloner to move all my data.  That way I knew I had a bootable SSD that including all my data.
You could also go with SuperDuper (free for a full clone), or Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> Restore specifying the original HDD as the source, and the SSD as the destination.  Carbon Copy Cloner does have a 1 month demo period where "All" its features are enabled, so you can even use CCC.

  • Unable to copy hard drive on to external device from Disk Utility. Getting error message "cannot allocate memory".

I am trying to retrieve the information on my hard drive after I spilled liquid on my keyboard . I can get to Disk Utility by using the boot up disk but when I try and copy the hard drive to an external device using "New Image" it tells me it is unable to create a copy because it "cannot allocate memory".

Were you able to get any help with this problem? My MacBook Pro out of the blue wouldn't boot up all the way and now I'm trying to get a copy of everything onto the new external drive using disc utility but am having the same errors as you! Thank you for sharing any tips!! -Norah

  • Copying a drive with Disk Utility

I have a USB drive used for Time Machine that is failing. Disk Utility says it can't fix it, but says I can copy files from it.
I attached a new drive and am using Disk Utility's "Restore" function to clone the new drive from the failing one (both are 1TB drives).
Disk Utility says on the screen that it is "copying blocks". Does this mean it's doing an image copy rather than a file-by-file copy? It seems to me an image copy in this case might be bad, because it could cause any file or directory corruption on the old drive to be copied to the new drive.
Are my worries justified? Would I be better off just using the Finder to copy files? Are there third-party programs that might be better? (DiskWarrior says it can't fix the old drive because of insufficient memory.)

I have SuperDuper! but didn't have it installed on that machine and thought I would give the Disk Utility process a try.
I'm fairly sure SuperDuper! must use file copying, not image copying, and I suspect Disk Utility does too. But that "copying blocks" message made me wonder.
BTW, Disk Utility is telling me it's going to take over 24 hours to copy the terabyte. Both drives are connected via USB 2.0.

  • Copying Hard Drive and Library

If I have one external hard drive -- with all my Aperture Export projects and Library copied on to it, and then decided to back THIS hard drive up onto another hard drive, will my projects and library copy and be functional on the second one?
I'm concerned if it wasn't copied straight from Aperture whether it will be functional.
    Thanks!

They'll be all functional, the Library is in fact a folder (you can see its content by Ctrl+click on it and select Show package content)
If you want to test the Library backup just go to Aperture's preferences and select the new Library location.
If you use Vault instead of a full Library backup, you'll save some space (thumnails aren't copied) but will loose some speed while recovering from backup (thumnails would need to be created again)

  • Copying Bootable Drive C: to Second Hard drive

In Win98se, I could take "Partition Magic 8" and simply copy c: to the
next drive, shut down, unplug the original drive, and set the jumper on
the new (bigger) drive to Master, and I'd have a bootable bigger drive.
This is not working on XP. I did the same thing, but the new drive will
not boot. (No system files error). I have tried doing this several
times, once I ended up with a dual boot creation, which was a major pain
in the ass to remove. I'm guessing that this type of operation is not
possible with XP, and I'll have to completely reinstall XP to the new
    drive from scratch.
Anyone know any other way to do this?

Partition Magic is out of data.
    Try this pelase: Aomei Backupper
Cloning(Copying) partition or backuping system partition then restore is OK

  • Copying 2 drives to 1 for the same project

I'm copying an external drive and have a 2nd for the same project I want to also copy (to the same external drive) and am wondering if I'll have any issues with media becoming unlinked?
    Anyone have any ideas?
    .

That didn't work at-all. That Media Manager deal is way too confusing in the way the options and parameters are worded - It's like reading riddles. And, I kept getting some kind of i/o error message.
    Blah.
I copied all the files to a single new drive with 2 partitions and named the partitions the same as the 2 drives I previously had the files on.
Seems to be working fine other than losing some render files which is pretty normal anyway for FCP.

  • Will bootable copy of drive recreate problems with overheating?

Hi, all, first let me say I am outside of my comfort range with my skills so some of these questions may seem pretty dumb. So, sorry for that.
Through my own posts and reading the posts of others, it is clear I have to take in a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo Intel to get it fixed (almost out of warranty so I have to move on it). It spins and gets hot with the lid closed, freezes when opened and requires restart a couple of times a day, sometimes has a long buzz on force restart. I probably mangled the transfer of files from an iBook, though using migration assistant - may have transferred incompatible settings somehow. I got an external drive from OWC and am ready to download SuperDuper! at the recommendation of many of you experts. We run Leopard on the Pro 17" and will need to use a MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Intel running Tiger as the "keyboard and screen" from the bootable drive I plan to create on the external drive. (BTW, I have never done this before) Would we expect any of the power management/sleep issues to be recreated? Obviously if it is a hardware issue, I would expect NOT to see it, but is there a chance it is software related and would therefore show up on the clone? Thanks.

Yes it does sound like you need to send in your MBP soon before the warranty expires. Be sure to do that. My niece did that recently, and got a very fast turnaround. She sent it off at 6:00 PM on a Tuesday, and it was back by Thursday morning.
It is a little difficult to say what is going on from your description, and I'm not entirely clear on what you are doing.
Super Duper (which I use) will make an exact copy of your hard drive on the new external drive. If you have corrupted software or something like that, it will be the same on the external.
To make the clone, you connect the new drive to the 17" MBP and when it has mounted, just launch Super Duper and specify the source and target volumes and Super Duper will do the rest. You will then have an exact bootable copy of your drive on the external drive.
You will then be able to boot the 17" MBP from the clone. I don't know if you can boot the 15" from it or not. If the builds of the two machines are different, you may not be able to. However, you should still be able to mount the clone on the 15" MBP and access the data.
I have read of many problems in migrating data from a Power PC platform to an Intel Machine using Migration Assistant, so you could have some problems with that. Here is Kappy's Guide for doing this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=0
For power management and sleep issues, have you tried resetting the SMC?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
It probably won't fix all the problems on your 17", but it could fix some of them.
Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test on the 17"? It might give an error code saying what is wrong with it. If so, let Apple know when you send it in.
The real question is whether or not the 15" MBP will boot from the clone. I don't know if it will if the machine builds are very different. If it does boot, there is still a possibility that it may not run perfectly due to the difference in build.
The real value of the clone is to preserve all your data before you send the machine in. You may even want to wipe the old drive of any sensitive data before sending it off. If the old drive is replaced under warranty, you will not get it back. Even if it is not replaced, often the drive is erased and the OS reinstalled in the troubleshooting process, so there is no counting on getting back your data unless you make a backup, which is exactly what you plan to do.
When you get the 17" MBP back, you can use Super Duper again to clone everything back from the external drive to the internal drive.
I'm not sure if this answers your question or not. Please post back if you need further clarification on anything.
    Good luck!

  • Do I really need to Shadow Copy Backup Drive?

I am running SBS 2011 Standard. Every once in a while I get "volsnap event id 25 (The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow
in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.)".
The referenced volume is actually my backup drive which is a "simple, basic, NTFS primary partition" without an assigned drive letter which is entirely devoted to Windows backup destination drive.
    VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE shows:
    Shadow Copy Storage association
       For volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\)\\?\Volume{4ba

       Shadow Copy Storage volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}
    \)\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.094 MB (0%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.93 GB (1%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (100%)
which I assume means VSS is actually keeping a shadow copy of the backup drive (or trying to).
My question is - do I really need to shadow copy this volume? If not would I stop this by the following command?
    VSSADMIN DELETE SHADOWSTORAGE /FOR={4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}

Just did a quick bit of research on this and I think the error may be misleading.
If you go into Disk Management, right click Disk Management, All Tasks - Configure Shadow Copies
Do they show as Disabled on that volumeID?
If I go into Windows Server Backup and check out the Details, I see (on this system) 70.63gb of Backup Items, and 186gb of Copies. Which tallies up with what I see under List ShadowStorage.
So, what I suspect is happening (although happy to be proved wrong) is that the error above is VSC making space on your backup disk, or some other management process of the backups themselves.
I expect if you delete that Shadow Storage you will in fact, be deleting the backups.

How do you knwo your internal HD hasn't crashed? If you have not been backing up then you may be in for a valuable albeit painful lesson on why backing up isn't some that you "should" do but something  that MUST be done daily in order preserve your valuable data.
Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode at least 2-3 times back to back, if you get error codes as I expect your next stop is your local Apple Store or AASP to have teh computer repaired. When you leave after getting the computer repaired make sure you buy an external HD and ask them for instructions on how to use Time Machine.

  • Copying events drive to drive in iMovie08

How do I copy events from one drive to another in iMovie 08?  (Different than iMovie 11).  More details below:
I have iMovie 08 and have two drives - the internal computer drive and a USB connected external.  Both show up in the iMovie event library and when I import from a camera, I am asked which drive to write to so I write to my external to save space.  Before I delete the movies from my camera card, I decided I wanted to copy the events that are on the external onto the internal so I have a backup.  I can't figure out how to do this.  Apple support documentation for iMovie 11 says that dragging onto the other hard drive copies and command drag  moves.    Documents for iMovie 08 says that dragging moves rather than copies.  This is what I find.  I drag an event from external to internal and the event disappears from the external.
The two documents are foiund here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026   (iMovie 08)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

iMovie 08 has only Move, not copy. If you want to make a backup, you can copy the event folder in the finder and paste it on another drive. However, to use it, you would have to copy it back to the external drive where it started.
The copy function was added in iMovie 09.

  • Copying clone drive, then writing back to new drive

I have a problem. My friend's computer crashed. She has a cloned drive. I would like to know the easiest way (if any) for me to take her cloned drive (A), copy the contents to a temporary drive (B), then copy the copied clone (B) to another drive (C) and send to her.
Reason being the clone as an Apple drive, and they want the original drive to perform service. So she has to put it back, but before, she wants to take the clone files off and put them on another drive. Will the cloned drive function properly if I just take the files and move them?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

You MUST clone, not copy. Google for Carbon Copy Cloner. It's free (SuperDuper is feature better, but costs). Clones will work perfectly. Test it before she runs off with it, though. Startup off the new clone. It will take a lot of time. 100 GB about 2-3 hours.
