Copying to External Drive

Hi
I've searched and cannot find my problem elsewhere.
When I try to copy a large folder of photo's to an external drive, it copies a couple of subfolders, then comes up with an error message saying it cannot continue, a folder with name XXXXX already exists. I'm not sure what is causing this, as it only exists because it has just created it. The folder is approximately 4.5gb, with maybe a thousand sub folders. They are photo's on the whole.
Any help gratefully received.

Exactly how is your external driver partitioned and formatted? If it's partitioned and formatted for a PC then you may get such an error. I suggest you prep the drive properly for use on a Mac:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read"

this is a problem on my 2x3GHz quad-core intel xeon macPro running os 10.5.7, and itunes 8.2. i have a 1TB external hard drive (firewire 800) that holds all my music for itunes. i have never had any problem with this setup before, until recently.
once, a while back i got an error on my itunes (that popped up without me doing anything.. seemingly random) saying something about not being able to save the itunes library. that went away after a restart, and hasn't returned.
BUT a new problem now happens any time i try to add more music to my itunes library. i have always added music to itunes by setting up my preferences "add file to library" and have the itunes library pointing to my external hard drive. then by dragging the files on-top of a playlist, it sorts and adds the files to my external hard drive. i have been using this process for years without any glitches.
now when i try to drag files into itunes, i get: "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
i double checked the read/write privileges on my external drive and nothing has changed since i got it. (it's still read/write access for my user.. and i've even tried putting a "read/write" for "all" as well. no dice)

thanks, that actually doesn't help the issue i'm having.
but now the problem has expanded to finder and everything else. so i'm pretty sure the external hard drive is starting to go out. i'm currently attempting to back up all 700GB of info from the drive.

  • Problem with copying to external drives 10.8.3 "the operation can't be completed because an item with the name .ds_store exists"

After upgrading from 10.7.5 to 10.8.3 I cannot copy certain folders to any external drive. the operation can't be completed because an item with the name .ds_store exists. I have seen this problem in discussions for many years with no real solution. Does anyone have a resolution? Please help. This is very frustrating as I work in two locations and copy folders back in forth all the time.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How can I prevent Applications from being copied to external drive?

    Hello,
    Just a quick one...
I run a studio in an education evironment. We've got quite a lot of software installed on our machines (Mac OS X 10.7.4) and there's always the chance that students will copy applications from the Applications folder onto an external drive to take home!
Obviously this is becoming increasingly easy with large USB sticks and Applications which are entirely contained in the Applications folder.
Is there any way that students can still run these applications during class but prevent them from copying the whole applications?
    With thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

You can hide the Applications folder, but it isn't a total solution. Open Terminal and type:
    cd /
    sudo chflags hidden /Applications

  • Copying from external drives repeatedly fails

    Hello!
I have repeatedly had the same problem with my computer and external drives. I have 2 hard drives (150 gig Western Digital in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, and a 160 gig Maxtor in an external Firewire and USB 2.0 enclosure) from which I often cannot copy. I've never had problems writing to the drives, but sometimes copying from them freezes.
I am a professional photographer and at any given time I'm working with far too many photos to fit on my laptop, yet I often need a particular project on my laptop so I can edit on the road. So I'm frequently moving projects to and from these drives.
This problem is not only with photos, however. When I recently reformatted my hard drive (too many old programs installed and it was faster to just start over from scratch to clean up the drive), I first made a backup onto each of these external drives. But when I went to copy my iTunes library back onto the laptop the copying would freeze. I'd relaunch Finder and start it again and it would freeze on the exact same file. I did all the disk utility first aid operations on my laptop drive and the external drives and it still happened.
If I connect the drive to my XP computer and transfer the files over my LAN then there's no problem. Makes me think the files are fine, as is the drive's integrity. Oh, and no problem copying these exact same files from one drive to the other, or from an external drive to the internal drive with the XP computer.
When this problem is happening it doesn't matter which drive I use or by which interface, it always freezes on the exact same files. But if I open that file from the external drive in the appropriate application it reads it just fine. It's only when I'm copying the file. And it doesn't matter if I copy 10 gigs at once or one file at a time, the same files freeze up. If this was just one file every 6 months I could probably deal with it, maybe even just delete it and move on (as I've done with MP3s, since I own all the CDs and can re-rip the song). But when in a set of 10 gigs even if I delete one photo it freezes up again another couple hundred megabytes later.
I'm baffled. I don't know what to do. The fact that it happens with multiple drives and multiple interfaces makes me think that it isn't a problem with the external enclosures or those drives. The only things in common are the exact files I'm transferring and the PowerBook.
I'm really frustrated because I've found a situation where my XP box performs better than my Mac, and I'm a little shaken up about it.
    Any ideas?

12 PowerBook G4 1.3GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 gigs, combo drive, all updates installed except Tiger.

    Yes, it's from a camera.
Again, the file is not corrupt. It can be read by my Windows XP computer, opened in Photoshop, and all the data is present. And if I remove the file that isn't copying and start over it freezes on another one later. And then another. And another.
I was forced to edit this wedding on my Windows box (with an older version of Photoshop - much slower than using CS2 on my Mac) because I have been unable to copy them to my PowerBook. This is incredibly frustrating. I've run all the disk utilities on my Mac and on the external drive. Nothing has improved the situation.

I have a Mac Pro and suddenly it won't copy files from any external drive, or write them either. The drives mount and show up in fiinder, and they start copying, but after about 30 seconds they error out with "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50).
It has done this on two different Mac Pros and 3 different external drives.  I don't remember this haqppening before. I have Paragon NTFS running on both Macs and they have worked flawlessly for maqny months but now they won't complete.  Any help would be appriciated.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

  • Copying one external drive to another

So I have an aging 350gb external drive that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).    I want to copy the entire contents to a new external drive that I've been using as my time machine (although not to back up the external drive).   It is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).   I've been reading these forums and there doesn't seem to be a easy or straightforward way.
Or is there ?  !    Any help as always is appreciated.

AFAIK, there isn't. BTW, why is the TM disk case-sensitive? For TM things, peruse Pondini's TM FAQs.

  • Copy to external drive lost a part of itunes

My hard drive was full, so I started to move stuff over to an external hard-drive. The only problem was that all that happened was that a copy was made so the file or folder had to be deleted out of the main inorder to make space on the main hard-drive.
I copied itunes and deleted it from the main. What I have now is a list of all of my music like I used to have in itunes. Except that I get an exclimation point instead of a speaker to the left of the song. I get the message "itunes can't find that file". When I want to play music or anything else I need to do a search for it in "itunes music" (a folder) and chose it... In order to have the music playable I will have to do this for each song one at a time for all of my music. Is there a different way of doing this or am I up a creek.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Unfortunately, as you now know, that was not the best way to try and move the files. So sounds like we might be able to fix it. Exit iTunes.
On your internal drive you have the iTunes folder and in that there is the "iTunes Music Folder" (where you were moving files out of) plus two database files and maybe another "Previous iTunes libraries" folder.
Grab that whole iTunes folder from your internal drive and copy it to the external drive. Now take all those folders you have previous moved from the internal to the external, and drag them into the "iTunes Music" Folder inside the iTunes folder that is now on your external drive.
Now start up iTunes and immediately hold down the OPTION key. You should be presented with an option to create a new iTunes library or open an existing one. Pick to open the existing one and point to the iTunes folder on the external drive.
If all goes well, it should open and iTunes should now have all the songs locations known. You might find a few you need to redirect, perhaps some of the ones you already tried to redirect iTunes to.
Let me know if that worked or not.

  • Copy from external drive using upgrade assistant

I use super dupper to back up my internal drive to an external (thank goodness) as I have had to do several erase and reinstall lately. I thought that the upgrade assistant would then read my external like it was in target mode and copy over applications and documents but it never seems to recognize the drive. Whats the best way, short of reinstalling all of my apps from the original cds, to copy stuff back from my external drive?

Well that's the thing. I can't put my external drive into target mode and my fresh ly installed system on my machine does not see the external drive as a "bootable system" when I run the upgrade assistant (which starts after a fresh install). I have been able to clone the backup back to the internal drive but I always worry that is a system file gets corrupted and then cloned to my external drive, when I clone it back, I end up with another problem.
What I was trying to achieve - and maybe I can't, is to do a fresh install and have the assistant read my backup and copy my applications, documents and user files like when you buy a new Mac and transfer everything over from your old Mac.

  • Windows 7 64-bit Corrupting (Altering) Large Files Copied to External NTFS Drives

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/13a7426e-1a5d-41b0-9e16-19437697f62b/
continue to this thread, I have the same problems, the corrupted files only archives, zip or 7z ... and exe, there are no problems copying larg files like movies for example, no problem when copying via linux in the same laptop, it is a windows issue, I
have all updates installed, nothing missing

    Ok, lets be brief.
This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have had issues
using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and the external
drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager properties of the
drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • Transferring music to new mac air using external drive: next steps after copying iTunes file to music folder?

I've followed instructions to consolidate, copy to external drive, then copy iTunes folder to Music folder on new mac air.  so...
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?

Exactly what steps did you follow?
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    It's on your old computer.
What do you want to do with it?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?
If you copied the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer then you simply need to open iTunes.
Since it is the exact same library, everything will be there as it was on old computer.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

  • How to Recover Playlists when Transferring iTunes Library from External Drive to New Computer

iTunes library copied to external drive and then loaded to new computer. All songs are there but all of the playlists that I had set up do not appear. I cannot figure out how to retrieve/recover them. The back-up was not done by me so I'm not sure of the steps that were followed. Is there something special that needs to be done when backing up to external drive in terms of saving playlists? Help!

    Hello TNCGRCT,
It sounds like the library was successfully transferred to the new computer, but the songs were imported into a new iTunes library. If you still have access to the external drive, or better yet the previous computer, we will want to transfer the iTunesLibrary.itl file and open it with iTunes:

  • 1 itunes library and 2 external drives?

My goal is to be able to copy an external drive (64,000 songs) to another external that I can leave at home.. I want to be able to plug in both places without having to carry the external with me..
Is is possible to have one library and 2 externals with identical music folders? Any help would be appreciated.

I only add music to the external I have at work... So all the music goes into that drive.. The only problem is that eventually I will have to recopy all the music to my home drive.... I don't think there is any way to sync the 2 drives..
