Copying to RAID V Slow

Hi,
Been using this set-up for 18 months faultless, until today.....
I have a rather strange problem happening with our Xserve RAID. One half of the raid is used for Live work and the other is storage, items to be archived etc.....
One half of the RAID (Live work) has developed a problem when copying to the RAID. Copy from the RAID is fine. To copy a simple 40mb file can take 10 seconds, but if i copy the same file to the other half of the RAID it's super quick.
My initial thought is that i might need to rebuild RAID 5 on the bad half of the server. I have done obvious things such as reboot the server and RAID and also changed the Fibre Channel cables over to eliminate issues with either the cables or Fibre Channel Card ports.
So are my thoughts correct and will i need to rebuild RAID 5?
Thanks for reading my post.
Darren

How full is the slow half of the array? Performance begins to degrade around 85% full but over 90% it can become noticeable and excruciating at some point > 90%.
I doubt rebuilding the array is the solution to almost any problem.
Hope that helps,

  • Satellite U500 - Copy process is very slow

    Hi friends,
I'm using Satellite U500-1f5, for last 2 months. It is core i5 with Windows 7. Still the copying process is very slow and some times booting is little bit slower.
Can anyone post a valid answer to resolve this problem?

    Hey mate,
Sounds like that you have installed a lot of software that slows down the performance of your notebook.
So which programs you have installed?
Theoretically it could also be caused due a virus or trojan. You should check your notebook for viruses using a good antivirus program like AntiVir.
Try also to defragment the HDD. If you install/uninstall many programs, you should defragment the HDD from time to time. You can use the integrated Windows defragmentation tool.

  • SB600 Raid 0 Slow boot?

Well, this is what I have:
    MSI K9A2 CF Version 1
    4GB DDR2 800 GSkill Ram
    Phenom II 945 3.0GHz 95 Watt Version
    2 x 1TB Seagate 7200.12 drives in Raid 0
    1 WD Blue 500GB and 1 Seagate 7200.11 500GB in Raid 0.
    Thermaltake 750 Watt Powersupply
    2 x IDE DVD Burners
    Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
Well, basically, the computer seems to boot slower than a single drive before the login screen. Everything else appears to be faster though except that initial boot speed. Any ideas or am I just stuck with the way it is? Oh, and I am booting off the Seagate 1TB drives and even the HD Tach program indicates much faster speed. (Everything is backed up on an external drive so I am not worried about data loss.)
    Thank you.

I can understand why you would think it is a waste and normally, I might agree. However, in this case, I have Acronis Trueimage Home 2009 installed.
I have it scheduled to do a full backup image, not clone, to my other 2 x 500 GB harddrives setup in raid 0 on Friday night. It actually creates the image right in windows without rebooting and only takes about 45 to 50 minutes to create the image. (300GB made into a 230GB or so image.)
Then I xcopy that image automatically late saturday night to my external 1.5TB USB 2 harddrive. The cool thing is I also have a single non raid disk image if I feel like going to one disk. (Oh, and I have a copy of my data on my laptop which is always at work.)
So, what do you think now?

  • Copying files either very slow or doesn't work at all

I've tried copying files from a DVD to an external drive, and from one external drive to another, and I've been running into troubles on my Mac Pro, namely, I get an error code 36 (corrupted files) and the copying process hangs, requiring me to reboot. However, I was able to copy the files from the DVD to my laptop HD, so I don't think that corrupt files is the problem. After rebooting my Mac Pro, I was able to copy files from one external drive to another, but it was incredibly slow (about 1GB per hour), and I was still unable to copy files from the DVD to an external drive. I've verified all the disks with Disk Utility, and I've repaired disk permissions on my Mac Pro HD but apparently need to re-run since when I verify permissions again, I'm still getting a lot of errors or comments like "Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rlogin" has been modified and will not be repaired". Scanning my Mac Pro HD for viruses, quite a few files are coming up with the comment "did not have permission to open the file." Other than continuing to repair disk permissions, does anyone have suggestions about what might be causing this and/or on possible next steps?

A little further info - I checked permissions and I have permission to copy the files in question. Also, it seems that most of the errors that pop up when I verify permissions are of the type that can safely be ignored, according to Apple -- I'll go through the list later and cross-check them to make sure that they're all ignore-able, but thats what they appear to be.

  • Why is copying to AppleTV so slow?

Just got an AppleTV about a month ago (which now I realize was stupid because it means there will no doubt be a better/faster/stronger one at Macworld Expo, but oh well). I also bought a new Airport Extreme-N.
    1) It takes me 7.5 minutes to copy a 218mb file from my iMac to the AppleTV over an 802.11n network (5Ghz) where the iMac and AppleTV are the only devices on that network.
    2) It takes 5.0 minutes to copy the same file from my iMac to my Powerbook over an 802.11g network (2.4Ghz).
Why is N slower than G?
(Didn't know whether to post this here or in the Airport Forum, but assumed most folks here were familiar with Airport issues. Both networks are exclusive, so there are no non-N devices on the N network.)

In addition to the comments others have posted (2.4GHz is better than 5GHz and also watch for other devices or networks using the same channel you're using.), what type of 802.11n router do you have?
I ask because Apple's own Airport Extreme (the new ones that can do 802.11n) have a mode where they can be dedicated to 802.11n only, vs. a mode in which they support 802.11n but can 'fallback' to support clients at 802.11g/b. Turns out the 'dedicated' mode is significantly faster.
If your router has such a mode and you don't have any devices that still require 802.11g/b then I'd suggest giving that a try.
My own AppleTV is linked using physical network cable, but I've upgraded my network to gigabit. This had a huge impact on how fast I can sync my iTunes libraries and Apple TV.

  • Copying files is extremely slow!

Suddenly I have a large problem copying files.
Briefly: I keep my iTunes library (mostly video - movies, TV shows) on an external drive. Suddenly copying a TV show (about 650 mb) that normally takes about 10 seconds either takes extremely long or causes a total freeze up.
What happened: The first time it happened it got up to about 30 MB copied and the estimated time kept climbing from about 5 minutes to 8 minutes to 15 minutes etc. My machine froze completely and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to restart, the startup disc wasn't recognized and I got the folder with the question mark icon. I restarted in target mode to use Disk Utility from my laptop, but it didn't recognize the drive at all. I restarted with the original installer disc and did a hard drive verification. At the end I got the message "Filesystem verify or repair failed" and the only error shown was a difference in the number of free blocks. (maybe because I shut it down in the copying process?) I did a disc repair which ended successfully, and I could reboot from the internal hard drive again.
I thought maybe a corrupted video files was the problem, so I tried to copy a similar file over with the same result. Only this time, after the boot up drive wasn't recognized, it also didn't show up in the Disc Utility from the installer disc! Assuming I had to take it in for repair with a dead internal hard drive, I shut it down. But hours later, just for grins, I started it up again, and this time Disk Utility on the installer disc did recognize the internal hard drive and i could do the disc repair again.
I plugged the external drive into my laptop and copied a similar file over, which took the usual 10 seconds, so it is not the external drive causing the problems.
So I did a test by just using option-drag to make a copy of the same file, which didn't cause the total freeze up, but it did take over 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds. Same result with a similar video file, so the fist video file isn't corrupt I guess.
Everything else seems to be normal now, but file copying is extremely slow. The boot up time is also normal.
At several points in this ordeal I ran Cocktail and did a PRAM reset. I usually use Cocktail maybe twice a month and never had a problem, so I don't think it was the culprit.
Any ideas out there about what my problem might be?
    Thanks!

    Oops!
Just saw that I hadn't updated my hardware profile, so I just did.

  • Copying Album Art Is Slow...

Since updating to 10.3.1, adding artwork to an album is very, very slow.  My process is to rip a CD, then copy the artwork from Amazon or elsewhere, then select the entire album and paste the artwork into the "selected item" window at the lower left.  Used to be pretty quick (maybe 10-15 seconds per album), now is nearly a minute some times.  I'm working on an iMac 4,1 with 2 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2 GB of RAM.  Is this a problem with the latest iTunes version?

For individual albums not showing artwork on the iPod, I usually do the following:
My iTunes is set up to sync only checked items to my iPod. So I plug in the iPod, I select the album in iTunes and uncheck the whole album. I sync the iPod and that album is removed from the iPod completely. I then recheck all the tracks from that album and then resync the iPod forcing the album to be reuploaded onto the iPod. This normally fixes the issue.
This is a good way to do it for those onesy-twosey albums rather than turning the artwork off/on for the whole library.

  • Xserve RAID - to slow during video capture

    I have Xserve RAID with 14 drives in 2 stripes ( 2x7 drives ) in RAID5. I can see in my system two "drives" called RAID1 & RAID2 - each 2.18TB.
When I`m using BlackMagic Disk Speed test utility I have only 150MB/s read and 100MB/s write which is to slow for 1080i HD.
What is wrong ? What should I do to get better performance ?
I`m new in Xserve so maybe somebody could explaine me "step by step" what to do.
I read a little about RAID50 but I have no idea how to create it.

Those speeds are fast enough for HD capture.
Anyway, to ensure you're getting full speed, make sure:
    1) You have the 1.5 firmware on the RAID
    2) Enable controller write cache is checked (enabled)
    3) Use drive cache is checked (enabled)
    4) Allow host cache flushing is DISABLED (unchecked)
    5) Use steady streaming mode is DISABLED (unchecke)
For capture, leaving the settings at 8 stripes as prefetch is probably best. If you are going to be doing extensive playback of uncompressed HD, you may want to consider setting the prefetch at 128 stripes.

  • Copy paste mappings very slow

I am using OWB 11g and the copy paste opeartion of mappings in the design center is runnig too slow.
The paste operation takes a lot of time to complete. The session goes into a DB file sequential read wait event.
I tried gather stats of the OWBSYS schema, but it didnt help.
    Please advice in this regard.
    Thanks in Advance

  • New itunes copy/rip rate very slow

    hello all,
after updating itunes to new version my rip rate has dropped, instead of a rate of about x7.0 to x10.0 i have dropped to x0.1 to x4.5.. it now take me hours!! to copy a regular store bought cd.
please does anybody have any ideas how to up the tempo (PS - reloading older version of itunes isn't working.)
thanks for any ideas, have a good one

    Tom,
Are you familiar with firewire target disk mode?  If you were to connect the two computers using firewire you could do some file management. Make sure that you have key files on one machine and a TM backup.  Then do a clean install on the Mini.  Better yet, have you considered partitioning the drive on the mini so you can have the best of both worlds?
Depending on the size of the hard drive, you could have one partition for a clean install back up of just a system, one partition of the MacBookPro system with all your familiar settings and preferences and then one partition that is just a fresh start with every thing new and clean.  All you have to do to compare and contrast is reboot to a different partition.  If things get back to fast, you may not need or want all the old baggage that may be slowing you down.
    Explore some options.

  • RAID 0 SLOW

    Hi all..
Ive got two digital raptors both 36gig on raid 0
Both connected on SATA1 and 2
I may be completely wrong in assuming somethings amiss - but to me the system is not accessing data as quick as id expect.
They're two of the fastest drives around and yet i still have to wait a fair amount of time for certain games to install.
Roughly 4 minutes to install a game like GTA SA - it just seems very slow ?
I ran Software Sandra at it rated the drive index at 80mbs - is this normal ?
The pc overall is running very well - stable at least - just wondering if im missing anything obvious that could speed the drives up.
I heard the mb sata3 and 4 sockets were better for oc  - would swapping the cables over to sata sockets 3 and 4 harm/wipe the data on the drives..??
secondly would this give me any performance increase?
Any help as always greatly appreciated..
    Thankyou..

Just changed the sockets to 3 and 4 and agp clock to 67.
    HD TACH - Burst speed - 202.2 mb/s
    Random access - 8.4ms
    Cpu Utilization 4%
    Average 74.6mb/s
Byter how should i do i determine the size of the stripe that was used? - is it possible to change without reformatting?
    Thanks
I'm not sure how to tell the raid stripe size except durring install or Maybe using the nvidia raid manager if it's in your controll panel but either way if you wanted to change the stripe size you would have to rebuild the array(reformat), with those new scores I think your doing great though.

  • CD-DRIVE copying process is extremely slow on windows 7 professional 64 bit (on MSI workstation)

I am trying to copy files from a DVD disc (some 3 GB of data) using the CD-ROM
on this laptop. The transfer speed is EXTREMELY LOW! It starts with almost 3.5
MB/sec at first, but then after 10 seconds or so, it gets down to 500 KB/sec!
The transfer was going to take approximately 6 hours, which is a lot for a
     laptop with specs like mine.
I tried to copy the same DVD to another
laptop, which had much lower specs than my MSI, the approximated time was 10
     minutes.
I tried to update CD-ROM but it told me that it was up to
     date.
    My computer specs:
Name: MSI WorkStation Series GT60 2OKWS-674US
     OS: Windows 7 Professional
     64 bit
CPU: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7-4800MQ
     Hard drive: 1 TB 7200
     RPM, 128 GB Solid-State Drive
Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K3100 with 4 GB
     DDR3 VRAM
     Hard disk description: SATA
     Optical Storage Device: BD
     Burner
     Cache Memory installed size: 6.0
I tried many solutions searched on Google, but none of them worked! One of them was to disable "Remote Differential Compression" but it did not work at all. I tried to use 3rd party programs such as Teracopy but no improvement.
Please help guys as i'm desperate and this problem is getting on my nerves.

    UPDATE:
I noticed that the copying speed is ok until this error is encountered (attached)
after I click "Skip" the speed reduces dramatically to about 300kb/s and never changed

    Dear Expert,
Our Company have upgraded to SAP B1 2007A in April 2009, since then our users face problem in copying text in all modules.  We used to right click at a particular field, e.g. customer reference number, then right click to the paste into remarks field, but the system will hang for few second before it pop up the dialog box for you to select.  It also does not allow to use the shortcut key, i.e. CTRL C or CTRL V.
Do anyone of you face such problem before?  If so, please share yoour experience how to solve the problem.

  • K8N Neo Platinum RAID 1 Slow - Socket 754

I have two Samsung SATA drives.
    Under RAID 1 I get 15 MB/sec using HDTach.
If I go into BIOS and disable the RAID the system will boot off a single drive from the former array and I get 59 MB/sec using HDTach.
I go back into BIOS and re-enable RAID, then rebuild the array I go back to 15 MB/sec
    I also have a standalone WD 36GB Raptor and get 65 MB/Sec.
15 is much worse than 59.  I do not overclock.  Please help!
    WinXp sp2 - 1GB PC2700

HD Tach is used to benchmark the drives.  Yes I did my install properly using the RAID drivers from the floppy after I pressed F6.  Getting it installed was not the problem.  The problem is performance after my "by the book" installation.
I am currently using SATA driver 518 and RAID driver 518.  The performance of the 4xx drivers sucked just as much.
I was able to increase performance some by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvatabus DisableFilterCache from 1 to 0.  I got an extra 5 MB/S but put it back since I don't fully understand their driver setup.
I also want to mention this is my second setup.  Initially I had two WD Raptor in RAID 0 benchmarking over 112 MB/S but I decided to go to RAID 1 after one of them failed and I lost some data.  The Raptors are now in two systems.  I know how to install the RAID software.  I expect a RAID 1 setup to benchmark the same as a single drive.  There is no parity calculation for RAID 1 and the drives are not on the same data bus, heck it's SATA after all so you can't even do that.  I have a software RAID 5 setup running on a PIII 667 MHz 815 chipset system that is much faster than this.
