COPYING/TRANSFER EXISTING WEB SITE

I am a NOVICE to Dreamweaver CS3 (I am computer literate). We
have an existing web site through IPOWER built by some one else (no
longer available). I have a backup copy of our web site from IPOWER
it is a GZ file. I used SmartFTP to download it to my computer. I
want to COPY it to Dreaweaver (NOT to connect to the existing
platform). I want to copy so that I can edit, add pages, add
navigatin buttons etc. CAN SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME.

Actually, it is a zip file; it's zipped using a utility
called gzip.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip
A tarball is a (compressed or uncompressed) archive crated
with a utility
called 'tar' (from Tape ARchive)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_(file_format)
Most Unices come with utilities to create and extract both
tar files and
gzips. I believe that OS X also has those utilities. For
Windows, there
are a number of versions of GNU utilities compiled for
Windows.

  • Migration of an existing web site to Web Page Composer

    Hello,
I am investigating the options and the feasibility of the migration of an existing web site to a Web Page Composer (WPC) site. The web resources of the site can easily be copied to KM and used afterwards in WPC containers. However, they can neither be integrated to the WPC site navigation nor edited through the WPC UI. For example, only WPC Web Page or Web Sites can be WPC navigation nodes.
Has anyone ever done or tried such a migration? Do you know where I could find a description (or the javadocs) of the WPC API? Any suggestions or hints will be much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Youlian Dimitrov

    Hi Youlian.
If I understand correctly you have rebuilt only a few hundreds of the old pages using WPC forms. Did you do this manually or you have found a way of migrating them programmatically?
Yes, we did it manually for a two reasons:
    1. short timetable;
    2. 20 intranet sites with variety of used technologies and tools, styles, navigation structures.
Did you leave the rest of the pages as HTML (non-WPC) files?
Yes. But we imported them into KM.
Does it mean that you have implemented only part of the navigation structure through the WPC/portal navigation?
    Yes and no.
Firstly, in our case it would be a bad idea to bring all legacy, sometimes cluttered, navigation structure to a new platform as is.
Secondly, keeping in mind that in a common scenario portal already has own top level navigation you should carefully decide how deep is your site navigation structure will be.
Finally, migration it is a good time for information architecture redesign based on standards and guidelines.
Assuming that you have adjusted properly the links to all resources, have you encountered any particular navigation or display issues following this approach?
I could remember two limitations concerning a navigation:
    1. you should avoiding links to navigation nodes inside non-wpc html files, because in this case a target page opens without DLN;
    2. first linked non-wpc html page, which placed outside wpc container, should be opened in new window.
As for design, all our display issues caused by inline styles within source html files.
Did you notice any noticeable performance degradation after the migration?
We didn't have any degradation of performance. However, it is highly individual and depends on your portal infrastructure.

Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the creation of the new site with iWeb.

  • Creating an NEW version of an existing web site

I thought i was being smart, so i selected my existing fully operational web site in iWeb and then changed the Site Name and Published it to a local folder (different to the original site).
This is OK I can make changes to this new site, BUT how do i get back to the original operational site? which I intend to upgrade for a while before the new site is uploaded to the www
I cannot find anyway to open an existing site.??

Unfortunately, iWeb cannot open published sites. If you are going to be working on multiple versions of a website I would suggest splitting your domain file you can end up with something like this:
Though, only one site can be open in iWeb at a time

  • Transfer to Web Site

Using the web module in LR 4 is there a way to transfer, export, or publish my photos directly to my web site.  I know that I can publish them to smugmug and then move them from sumgmug to my website but I want to save a step.

There an FTP plugin that allows Export to am FTP address. Worked great.  but doesnt' work in LR4 , only LR3

  • Iweb,fetch,existing web site

Hi and thanks in advance! I currently have a web site dianabeads.com, which I edit and update through parallel desk top and windows xp and front page. I am trying to figure out how to do it with iweb and fetch so I can get windows off of my mac, I have played with setting up a page in iweb, so easy have opened fetch and viewed my current web site, but when I go to "put" on fetch i cant find where the file (new page) is that I want to transfer. I can be reached at [email protected] thanks again. Tom Bunten

The main reason for not publishing direct from iWeb would be that a lot of people want to optimize and/or add tags.
The three applications that I use for this - WSM, WebCrusher and iWeb SEO tool will all upload to an iDisk with one click to save you the extra steps for drag and drop.
However, if you want to optimize and retain the iWeb features like hit counter, comments etc, you have to publish to MobileMe first anyway. If this is the case, I would agree that there is every good reason for publish direct from iWeb.
If you follow this thread ...

.... you will see how Old Toad's brilliant and perceptive mind has opened the door to successfully achieving the seemingly impossible task of optimizing and retaining these features.

  • How to open an existing web site?

    Hello,
Hoping someone can help me here.  I have a web site that I have made using iWeb.  When I upgraded to Lion I had MAJOR issues that ended up in a new hard drive and logic board.  :-(  I restored my documents from time machine.  Now I want to update my web site, but whenever I open iWeb it wants me to create a new web site!  There is NO open command.  How do I get iWeb to open my exsisting web site so I can edit it?  I tried to double click my index file, but it opened in Firefox...
    Thanks in advance
    Eric Yerington

The Domain file, or Domain.sites2 to give it its full title, is what you need to open your site(s) in iWeb.
Lion doesn't want to open this file for some reason.
Download the app referred to on this page under "iWeb and Lion" and launch it to get this window...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/iWeb-Tips.html
... and click the "Choose Domain.." button to browse to the file and open it in iWeb.

  • Editing existing web-sites

    Hi,
Can iWeb edit web-sites that have been created with another application, and if so, how?
    Thanks, Tristan
    G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the response; I was afraid I was overlooking something simple. I did try dragging site folders and files onto the application, and iWeb did not "activate", consistent with what you wrote. ...Dang!
    Cheers, Tristan
P.S.: Tom, I believe you did answer my question, but I'll wait a couple of days just in case somebody chimes in with an unexpected twist.

  • Adapt existing web site with fluid grid layout

    Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if I could take a exisiting website and using Dreamweaver CS6 (which I don't owned at the moment) "easily" create associated fluid layout for tablets and smartphones.
Or do I have to start a new website "from scratch" to get the fluid layout?
I'm just beginning with website creation (only 2 at the moment) and I tried out  Dreamweaver 5.5 at the beginning of 2012... since I didn't find any other tools that could do the job like I feel Dreamweaver can, I'm in the process of convincing myself I should buy Dreamweaver CS6.... I won't hesitate much longer if I could take a existing website and be able to easily adapt it to fluid layout.
    Thanks for your help
    Sebastien

You would have to start over with a whole new Layout.  Once you get that designed, then you would need to insert content.  There is no magic button for converting existing sites to Fluid Grid Layouts because it's more complicated (3 CSS layouts instead of one).
In addition, Fluid Grid is a new feature in CS6 that still needs some refinement.  In order to build responsive designs that work in all devices, you must understand the technology.

  • Updating an existing web site.

A web page developer created a site for our small business. He would like for me to to be able to enter the site in order to change photos, pricing information, and add new products. He is not familiar with Mac's and cannot help me with this.
What software do I need in order to do this?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to find out from your web developer just what they did. You need to find out what software they used to create the site, what kind of server is required to run the site, and where said server is located and how to access it.
I am a little afraid that if they can't help you update the site from a Mac, they may have done it all in proprietary Microsoft .NET stuff and that means that you will have to either: 1) hire a new web developer to re-do it using a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) architecture, 2) buy a PC and learn Visual Studio .NET, or 3) hire that web developer to maintain the site for you.
Why do you think web developers like .NET?

  • Simple explanation of what is happening with iWeb and Mobile Me. Can anyone explain this simply and if our existing web site can be hosted elsewhere, if so can it still be updated using iWeb. Any advice very welcome

    We have a website that has run successfully using iWeb and Mobile me. We understand Mobile Me is being discontinued from June. From this forum it seems iWeb also is not being supported any more. So can the existing site be hosted successfully with another provider or is it best to start again. If so any advice on options would be very welcome;
    Thanks
    PB

For the most part if you just get a new webhost you can continue to run with iWeb. Since you are still running Tiger iWeb should work just fine for you. You will simply need to publish your website to a folder or with the built in FTP in iWeb. Apple has simply quit updating iWeb & there will come a day when iWeb quits working in the later OS's whatever kitty comes after Lion.

  • How can I copy, paste, and email a web site page?

Hello.  Basic Safari question: How can I Copy, then paste, web site content from Safari, into a document (ie. Powerpoint Presentation)?  I am interested in copying / pasting so that the content in the document looks (formatted) identical to the content on the web site?
    Thanks!
    KD
    ps.  R.I.P. S.J.

This one kills me as well - editing phone numbers in the keypad/dialer is a pretty basic function, I could never fathom why it didn't exist.  We need to be able to place a cursor, and copy/paste part-numbers!  I'm constantly trying to paste just an area code, or an extension, or insert the country code, and I should not need to create a new number in the contact directory to do it!
Currently I do the copy/paste editing in Notes, and then paste the corrected number into the dialer - pointless and inefficient, and contrary to the Apple philosophy of making the user experience easy and seamless...

  • Interactive PowerView report (Incl Map) load to Web site

    Hi,
What is the best, easiest & quickest way to load an existing Interactive PowerView report & map to an existing Web site (not Shharepoint)? Interactivity is required after loading.
    Regards,
    Allan

    Hi Allan,
If you want to display a Power View report in a normal PHP or ASP .NET Website, the only way I can think of is that to open the power View Excel document from SharePoint (it should render as a web app) and copy the URL and then use it in your website.
But I don't think you can interact with this 'report'. the SharePoint should be the best option for you to Presenting Power View Reports to Users, since it totally support the Power View report feature.

  • Building Dynamic web sites... where do you start these days?

OK... first off, I'm no coding expert but I have used Dreamweaver for many years to build web sites using a pretty basic ms access databases to generate a few dynamic web pages in .asp.
My question is, since the changes following Adobe Dreamwever CS5.5, what is the best way to develop dynamic sites. I want to update my existing web site (www.britishbutterflies.co.uk) and also move the dynamic content to a modern database/scriting language. I intend to build the new site using a responsive layout. I don't want to host the site via Adobe.
I'm sure I'm not the only one completely confused with the plethora of apps and software packages Adobe are currently promoting but can't seem to find any info which provides a clear guide as to what software/approach is best. Is Adobe Muse the best option - can this help with coding dynamic content like dreamwevare used too and can I host the site with my own web hosts?
Although the code produced by Dreamweaver was never perfect or the most up-to-date, those of us interested in doing a bit of dynamic web development on a non-commercial scale could get away with doing so up until Dreamweaver CS6. Now the whole thing seems like a pot of worms and dynamic web design only open to those with pots of cash and lots of time and a phd in astrophysics? :-)
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
    Steve

Not sure what you're refering to in the part about hosting with Adobe. You've never needed to do that at any point, and still don't. The "Creative Cloud" is, in my opinion, a terrible name for Adobe's current subscription service. The programs through it are still installed and reside fully on your machine. The websites you make are hosted wherever you choose.
Muse would not be the way to go. It's meant to target non-coding designer who wants to work with the internet and put a lot of bells and whistles on their site. The code it produces is very difficult to work with or make changes to.
DWCS6 still has its database interactions, those were removed (and for the most part, put back with both free and paid third party extensions) in DWCC. You can have both DWCS6 and DWCC installed on the same machine with a Creative Cloud subscription.

  • Web Site Conversion

Is there any way to convert an existing web site into a MUSE site without completely rebuilding the site in MUSE?

Not at this time, you cannot import HTML pages into Muse for them to load in Design mode. A site needs to be created in Muse to be able to edit it through Muse.
    Thanks,
