Copying tunes from my iPod to my computer.

I recently built a new computer, and therefore the songs that are on my iPod are not on my computer. Is there a way to copy songs from my iPod (not the library!) to a folder on my computer?

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.

Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

Where is your backup?
Just use your backup copy to put the songs on the computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:
File>Transfer Purchases
or do a forum search. This is asked and answered each day.

I want to copy the music from my ipod to my computer that way if i do pick the first option i will still have my music but i dont know if it's even possible to copy music from your ipod to your computer. If you do not have access to the iTunes Library on your Old computer... or its Backup...

Can you upload tunes FROM an iPod to a computer

I know how to download music to my iPod Shuffle, but does it work the other way? And if so, how do I do it. I believe you are allowed to legitimately connect your iPod to either one or three differenct computers at one time. Unfortunately, I still have an old iBook, which does not work with the iPods (G3 clamshell) so I have to put my music on friends and relatives computers and then download it from there. As I'm loading my own stuff up I sometimes borrow thier CD's and upload some of them (legitimate borrowing of actual CD's not P2P downloads). I'm primarily using two computers to do this. My friend's and my brothers. The majority of my music is now on my brother's computer, but all the stuff that's on my iPod was on my friends computer. There are quite a few songs that belong to the friend that I would like to add to my main music library at my brother and possibly vice versa. But I don't know if that is allowed or how to do it.

It is absolutely possible. Connect your ipod to the computer. After iTunes recognizes it, go to the Info tab in the ipod screen. There you will see sections for MobileMe, Contacts and Calendars. In the middle you can sync your contacts with Yahoo, Windows Contacts, Google & Outlook. Pick the one you want. I assume you'd either go with Windows Contacts or Outlook since you're syncing with your computer.
After checking the box for "Sync contacts with:" it will default to all. Then at the bottom right of iTunes, the "Sync" button will go away and Cancel and Apply buttons appear. Hit apply. Don't worry, all of the contacts that are on the ipod that are not on the computer will be saved. It will essentially make both the ipod contacts and the Windows/Outlook contacts identical.

If the music was bought from the iTunes store, yes, iTunes 7 can copy music from the iPod to the computer. If the music came from another source you'll have to download a third party program to copy music from the iPod to the computer.
Note: if you intend to delete music from your computer to save space it is a very bad idea. There are too many things that can happen to your iPod; it can be lost, stolen, die a tragic death beneath a bus...If you delete music from your computer back it up to a CD or DVD first.

I cannot transfer my tunes from my ipod to my mac

I have had to reload my mac operating system, in so doing I have deleted all my tunes, although they are backed up on my Ipod touch. When I tried to sync the two the message said that this was not possible due to the fact that their was another Library. This of course does not exist now. Can anybody help me get my tunes off my ipod and on to my macbook?

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."
