Copying video to iTunes

I have videos that are not recognized by iTunes such as mpeg-2 files. Is there a way to get those into iTunes? The iTunes help talks about converting files into files that my iPod touch can read but how do I get those files into iTunes?

iTunes cannot play MPEG-2 files. You'll need to convert them, and any other files that don't meet the requirements for iTunes:

If you search this forum for "video convert", you should find a number of threads with suggestions on video converters.

  • Error when copying files into iTunes

Been trying to copy some video files into iTunes. I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive. Haven't had any problems with this until today when I try copying videos into iTunes it pops up with an error saying:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "OneTouch4" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I have had no problems with this before. I am running the latest version of iTunes. Any ideas?

    Hi.
Tried both suggestions that have been made but the video files will still not copy into iTunes. Interestingly, when I copy podcast files into iTunes it works ok but when I tried the video files again they still get the same error.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I usually just add them to an iTunes library and then sync with the phone. File / Add to LIbrary, select Movies under Media down the left hand side.

First, you need to get them into iTunes & verify they are in a format that will be playable on your phone:

Once you do that, then sync them to your phone:

  • How to copy Video files to iPod without using iTunes???

    Hi there ..
I have the latest iPod Video 80GB.
If I copy video files larger than 640 pixels iTunes stops me.
But, I don't trust apple folks.
In the previous iPod it didn't matter the width unless you had a total number of pixels inferior to 480x480 (Mpeg4)
Now iPod 5.5G says 640x480=307200 pixels is the max.
    If I have a 736x416=306176
But iTunes doesn't let me copy such files into the iPod.
I WANT TO check if at Apple just don;t want me to have such files copied or if the iPod itself can't play them for real!!!!!
SO Anyone knows of an utility or a way to just copy such files to the iPod so that the database is refreshed and I can test them???
    thank you.

  • Hi! I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation videos in iTunes won't copy?

Hello! I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation, and I've been trying to put some videos on it, but whenever I try to sync it with my videos on iTunes, I get a message that says ''__' Was Not Copied to the iPod "__'s iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod'. Any help out there? I've tried exporting the file from QuickTime as the iPod/iPhone version, but it still won't play on my iTouch when i sync it from iTunes. I would try using a third party video converter to make it hte correct format for this old iTouch, but I don't even know what the correct format is! The software version is 4.2.1. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

If it is an iTunes purchase you should be able to download the SD version.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If non-DRM protected you can use a progrm like HandBreak

  • How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(7 and using VISTA).

How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(i'm using iTunes7 and Vista).
I don't have the disc, cause i can't find it. But my computer downloaded the ipod, it just cant find the files?
i've been looking through the topics for the past hour and none of them helped. Maybe i'm stupid i dont really know, but i've restored my old computer a couple times and i found a post and it helped both times. now i can't find it anymore.
THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN SEEING AND IT DOESN'T HELP ME ONE BIT:
Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
Can someone give me a link, or tell me one that shows step by step.

Here is a way of doing it, for another take on this, search the forum for posts by Zevoneer.
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.3/en/2586win.html
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • Error message when trying to transfer/sync video from itunes to ipod

I have never had this problem before, but I just purchased a couple music videos from itunes and then was trying to manually transfer/sync them to my ipod and then I receive the error message "Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to"
I can transfer/sync music just fine still, and I have transferred music videos in the past. And I checked the info tab on the music videos and they are "protected content" but I have been able to transfer other protected content videos from itunes before.
I have tried restarting itunes and the ipod, putting it in disk mode and nothing seems to work. I would appreciate someone's help, THANK YOU!

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help: "Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod
