Core 2 Duo Popping on Left Side

I have a MBP Core 2 Duo (4,1) that keeps popping on the left side. It sounds like it's coming from around the F2. It's getting more frequent and louder over just a short time. This all started maybe a month ago after years without a problem.
An Apple Genius looked at it in the store, and he could find nothing except that maybe it was the speaker. But the store is always so loud that I don't think you could hear a computer doing anything less than screaming.
This popping happens even with the speakers on mute, and I really do not think it is the speakers. There's no cell phone near it when this happens, and it happens anywhere, so I don't think it's interference.
It's not the hard drive as I have replaced that in the meanwhile, nor is this a hard drive sound.
The popping is a steady beat when it's happening. And it doesn't happen all the time. I can't really replicate the sound. It just does it's own thing. I do, however, hear it most often either when I have recently disconnected the power or when the battery is charging. (The power socket, however, doesn't matter.)
The really odd thing is, I seem to be able to stop the noise by activating the Mirror widget and/or SystemLoad (http://www.bresink.com/osx/SystemLoad.html). SystemLoad doesn't have to run for more than a second to make the sound stop — instantly. I don't know what that means, but it must indicate something, right?
Since I just upgraded my OS from 10.5 to 10.6, Apple has given me an additional 90 days of warranty. So, if there's something I need to try, I would like to do that soon.
Thanks for any ideas.

I guess I can't modify my post.... But I wanted to add this:
I don't think it's a fan hitting something as I blew those out when changing the hard drive.
Often, the volume of this popping is constant, but it's sometimes more LOUD-soft-tiny bit softer-LOUD soft-tiny bit softer. If I had to put it in numbers, I would guess 10-6-5.

  • Dualdisc cd side won't play on my mac mini intel core duo w Superdrive

Shakira Fijacion Oral DualDisc "CD" side will insert and then automatically reject from my Mac Mini - Intel Core Duo. The DVD side plays fine. Unfortunately iTunes not smart enough to work with DVD side. There is a query in IPOD forum about Springsteen DualDisc also failing on intel mini mac that is listed at "answered" but for the life of me, I can't tell if you are supposed to just not buy DualDisc or else take the Mac Mini back for a new drive.
mac mini (intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo's did not ship until 2006 which seems plenty of time for Apple to announce 'we have a problem' and what their recommended solution.
Why would they do that ? I mean, they don't have a problem. The inventors of DualDisc made a type of disc that won't play in all players, and Apple can't really do anything about it. Superdrives are not made by Apple, it's just Apple's name for a DVD burner; the Superdrives that are found in various Macs come from several different manufacturers, and although Apple probably ensures that the Superdrive and the Mac work well together, they won't test whether it works with each type of disc (usually, the manufacturer will).
However, that is probably limited to redbook/standards-compliant discs; since a DualDisc's CD side doesn't comply with any standard other than "DualDisc", and because it is not considered important enough to be officially supported by most (if not all) manufacturers, they probably won't test them since they're bound to get mixed results anyway.
Similarly I don't remember seeing a "strictly redbook only" disclaimer on any of the media available from Apple describing the capabilities of its Superdrive when I was making my mac mini buying decision.
You didn't see one because it is not required. Asking that Apple (or any other company) warns you that their players won't play non-redbook CDs is a bit like asking that they tell you everything your optical drive won't play. Apple claims that their Superdrives will read CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R DL, which aren't only a bunch of weird-looking letters, but also correspond to a standard. When you see a CD logo on a drive, it means that it will play redbook-compliant CDs. Your Dell player simply does more that what it is supposedly capable of, but because one (or many) optical drives will play DualDisc doesn't mean that they all have to.

  • How to I make pop up windows go back to the left side of the screen when they are moving to the right?

Whenever I click on a link, a new window pops up. That's good, that's what I wanted. They've always opened on the left side of the screen. However, they are now opening in the middle of the screen. This has happened before and the screen eventually opened completely on the right. Last time this happened, I ended up having to delete something. I don't remember what, but it solved the issue. Please help!

  • Loud popping sound on left side

Recently I've noticed a loud popping noise (for some reason I'd compare it to two pennies hitting each other) coming from around my left speaker, it actually may be from the left side of the keyboard, though. The mute button doesn't silence the noise. The sound isn't constant, and will only happen if my MBP is flat. If it's at an angle, sitting on my lap, etc, it won't make the noise. I also notice it more when I'm using more heavily intensive apps like Google Earth, which makes me think it's a hard drive/heat issue.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

    hi ian,
i've just updated with the recommended superdrive firmware 2.1, itunes 7.3, security update 2007-006 (universal) 1.0, mac os x update (intel) 10.4.10 and security update (quicktime 7.1.6) 1.0, and noticed (what i think could be) the same noise, but mine sounds more like a loud but dull thudding click/pop, more or less on the height of my charge cable socket.
mine is not rythmical and stops after 10 min or so.
changing the angle of the mbp doesn't make a difference
did yours start after an installed update and is it still happening?

  • How do I stop the side bar from popping up in the left side of my screen when I click on a bookmark on my tool bar?

I just got a new laptop, and redownloaded mozilla as my browser. I've set up my tool bar tabs but when I click them they only appear on the left side bar when I click them. This didn't happen before on my previous laptop, so I'm confused on how to get it to stop opening the sidebar when I click them, and have them instead appear in my main window.

Opening in the sidebar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website.
You can check the properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the sidebar (Ctrl+B; Command+B on Mac).
In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.
Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is not selected.

  • MacBookPro 2.8Ghz intel Core i7 running so hot on left side it burns my wrist when I type.

Hi: I have a 17" macbook pro. Left side where mag safe is has always seemed too hot to me, but I've been told that's normal. After running for upwards to 5 hours, the heat on the left side near the touch pad becomes so hot that I can not rest my wrist on the machine. I've got the screen in proper position (45 degree angle), the back of machine is not blocked. It's on a hard surface (desk or lap desk--because it is too hot to just have on my lap. The mag safe is functioning (power box) often is very hot as well and it is just on floor, not covered by anything. I don't understand what causes this problem and how to fix it.

  • My 20" core duo just bit the dust. Where to from here?

    Hi all,
2 and a half years after purchase, my well loved 20inch core-duo white iMac made a very loud popping sound (together with the acrid smell of smoke) and is now dead (I should have purchased 3 years of Apple Care).
All signs point to it being a busted power supply or even worse, a toasted motherboard.
    I have two questions:
Being an all-in-one unit, how do I extract the hard-drive?
How do I dispose of it? Is there a recycling program? Is there any value left in it?

You can take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US) or an Apple Store and have the hard drive removed. They may be able to resurrect the computer.
There is a recycling program. Details here: http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/program/index.html

  • Comformation of Core Duo-based MacBook/Macbook Pro Upgrade 'N' path

In an attempt to shorten these threads concerning MacBook/Macbook Pro Upgrade 'N' path using Apple's (AirPort Extreme Upgrade Kit **NEW** Model BCM94321MC) Part #'s MA688Z/B or MA688Z/A (The only difference between the two part numbers appears to be that Part # MA688Z/B come with the new Airport Extreme Base Station installation CD which includes the 'n' enabler.
Both these cards have been proven to work in both MacBooks. While some have had trouble with the /A card it CLEARLY appears to be a preferences problem. (just repair the preferences prior to installing the card)
Both cards require the Program Pacifist to install the enabler.
Pacifist is a small program that opens up .pkg installer packages and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package (for example, if you deleted Sherlock and need to reinstall it, but not the whole operating system), if you experience bugs in Installer.app that mess up your symbolic links, or if you just like a little more control over the installation process.
It can be downloaded free here. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812
Open the enabler trough pacifist and click install. The program will place the items where they should be.
Please post your results with these cards!!!!!!

Here is my step by step MacBook Pro Core Duo 802.11n upgrade guide...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/systems/macbookprowireless_N_upgrade/macbookpro_N_cardinstall.html#storytop
The only correction I would make to this is, the stainless tension bars at the top left of the Airport card should not be screwed directly into the card itself, but into the single screw hole directly above the card on the left side with the tension arms angeled down toward the card thereby actually holding the card in place via the tension or presure exerted. The two additional screws that come with the replacement card are not needed if you had and original card in place. There should not be any screws directly holding the card in place. The tension springs arms are only there to hold the card flat. If left as in your photo there could be some inadvertant arcing of static elec. transmitted to the card. THIS only applies to the MacBook Pro as the MAcBook requires being attached by two screws!!!!
/B Card: MacBook Pro--Courtesy of me: Same installeation as above,
I have now tried both of the different suggestions of getting internal 802.11n on an original MacBook Pro described on this forum.
1.) Dell internal 1500 Broadcom pci mini express card (Card Model # BCM94321MC), and
2.) Apple Pro’s internal (AirPort Extreme Upgrade Kit **NEW** Model BCM94321MC) New Part # MA688Z/B*
As you can see, both cards contain the same model numbers and incidentally, both only have ‘TWO’ antenna post and fit into the same space the existing PCI mini ‘G’ airport card held. Each installation took less than 20 minutes. Of course the second one took less time than the first.
I ordered the Dell card ($38 ebay) prior to learning about the Apple Pro card (Apple Store $43), however, both cards worked, performed, connected and were recognized equally well by the new ‘N’ AEBS. Both needed Pacifist for installation of the ‘N’ Enabler. Both cards show connection speeds at 130 in a mixed g/n environment, which appears normal per other post. Both cards performed identically with the new AEBS, except for the speed, as the original Apple 802.11 a/b/g card they replaced.
I referred to both the http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/85.0.0.html and www.xlr8yourmac.com/ instructions for the disassembly of my MacBook Pro.

seems to work. no driver problems or what ever!!

    Jean-Paul,
You know the way I took out my AE card is the exact way I installed it. Do have a picture of the completed install you did?
I was soooo careful when I performed this task. Is your MacBook Pro a 17"?
That's what mine is. I am sure that is the difference between the two. I have the 15.2" Service Manual and I see the bracket is completly different then the 17".

  • Old macbook pro3,1 (2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo) camera not working with Mavericks

I have an old macbook pro3,1 (2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo, I think 2007), builtin camera not working and I think it is related to mavericks update.
Anyone had the same problem, and if yes what is the solusion?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
