Core 2 Duo Swap?

Hello,
I have a Core Duo Macbook and would like to know if there is a way to upgrade to a core 2 duo? If so, how?

Paul4900 wrote:
You actually might be able to upgrade it if you're extremely good at soldering, but that's out of the question.
Maybe a complete main board swap, but then there are assorted component that might not "talk nice" with the new main board. Might not even fit into the same areas. I know there are typically tabs and other things that require a specific board design to fit into a specific box. If you've ever seen the inside of a notebook computer, it's generally built like a jigsaw puzzle.
I know some hobbyists who try stuff like this, but it's certainly not a terribly cost effective or reliable way to get a faster notebook computer. It kind of like what I've seen with hot rodders who shoehorn a V8 into an engine bay built for a 4-cylinder. Looks really strange and often requires that things be severely relocated and/or cut.

• Swapping the Core Duo for a Core 2 CPU

I came across this web site where they describe swapping a Core Solo CPU with a Core 2 Duo CPU. My mini has a Core Duo, but with Leopard now coming out w/true 64 bit apps, and with the future being 64, I have to wonder if this isn't worth giving a try. Here's a link:
http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/minimonster/
Knowing a little bit about hardware, I'm somewhat apprehensive. The swap they did, they did several years ago and the 64 bit migration is recent, meaning they really couldn't truly test it in that environment. Since Mini's with Core Solo and Core Duo's aren't "true 64", my concern here is really with the addressing capabilities of the hardware. If the OS is limited to 32 bits, as in earlier OS X releases, then I think it's possible that the swapping of a Core 2 in place of a Core Duo or Core Solo would work OK as long as no 64 bit addressing took place. When a newer OS comes along and tries to do 64 bit addressing, possibly the addressing hardware on the motherboard is limited to 32 bits and this would presumably fail.
I hope that's clear. My mini is a late 2006 model FWIW, and at the time the only processors being offered with it were the Core Duo's.
Thanks.

I have a similar question.
I have a 2006 xeon macpro.
Will i beable to upgrade to lion.
I saw this on the website today.
Step 1:Make sure your Mac can run Lion.
Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion. Find out if your current Mac has one of these processors by clicking the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, then choosing About This Mac.
Here is what i have.
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Will i be good to upgrade?
Thanks

Is the ram in my Imac Al compatible with my macbook Core Duo??? The ram in my Imac is 2x 1GB.
Thanks,
KANE

Hi KANE,
all Intel-Macs, with the exception of the Mac Pro, use the same kind of RAM-Modules .
Specs are: 200-pin DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMMs up to 1.25” in height. The SO-DIMMs must be DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) compliant and must be unbuffered, unregistered, 8-byte, nonparity, and non-ECC.
So feel free to swap.

• I have a old 2006 modle macbook 15 inch the A1150 i believe with core duo processor can change or replace that with a intel core duo 2 processor ?

it,s a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
memory 2 GB 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
is there some kind of way i can upgrade that to a Intel Core Duo 2 processor
or is it just a batle i cant win ?

You should be able to get a used or repaired MacBook 13/15-inch core2duo 2.0+GHz near
$350 or so, in working condition with some kind of limited warranty or guaranty. Companies
like macsales, wegenermedia, powerbookmedic, powermax and others offer previously
owned Macs that are not current models. Older, to vintage or obsolete; those who some-
times have the better deal on those also can repair most all Macs and have parts.
The effort to swap out a logic board (and then what? the
other parts likely won't match) isn't hardly worth the effort.
You may be able to find an early MacBook (circa 2006 to 2010 era) that needs minor work,
and troubleshoot/repair it with a DIY guide online... But that can be a gamble if you mess
up things that were not wrong in the first place, while learning on the job. It could cost plenty.
Some companies can sell you used parts, no guarantees on matching an incorrect logic
board with a diffferent build model spec computer's other original configuration. You'd do
better if you found someone selling their old MacBook Core2Duo, nearby, & could see it run.
I have a MacBook 13-inch coreduo 1.83GHz first-edition; an early core2duo won't do much
more than the coreduo. Snow Leopard is better than Lion in several ways; if you have older
software you already own that works, from the PowerPC era -- that can save you money.
Good luck in any event, & happy computing!

• Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to ZyXEL VMG B Series i am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 2Gb of RAM

Hi, My Mac Mini 2006 early core Duo
hangs when i try to connect wirlessly to
ZyXEL VMG B Series.
I am using fresh install Mac OS 10.6.3 with
2Gb of RAM.
The same issue when i try to hooked up with LAN cable.
Any tips and adviced will be very very welcome, thanks in advanced to everyone!

Hey there cutyscar,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to your router either by Wi-Fi, or ethernet. I would recommend trying the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1317
Start with this step, and work your way down as needed:
Check all cables and power supplies
Make sure all the cables related to the modem are plugged in and firmly inserted. This includes the modem's power cord, the cable from the modem to the computer, and the cable from the modem to the outlet. To be sure a connector is properly inserted, disconnect and reconnect it. Check to see if the cables have been cut, chewed, or otherwise damaged.
If you have any hubs or routers, check their cables and power supplies. If you have more than one power supply available for a type of hub or router, try swapping the power supplies. A defective power supply may affect network traffic.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,
Sterling

• Will there be a 802.11n enabler for my core duo MBP in the future????

I bought this mbp for 2400. and you are telling me i cant even take advantage of the 802.11n when it comes out. Does anyone have NEWS on whether the core duos will have support for the 802.11n.

i hope we mbp CD owners can swap the non 802.11n cards for the newer 802.11n cards in the mbp C2D... let's see.
actually it would be nice if someone from apple could post here if that's possible, and if not, why....

Based on Apple's past track record, I don't see it happening. However, as I've pointed out in at least one other thread, all hope is not lost: For $119 you can get an 802.11n ExpressCard from Belkin. With the Airport card in the MBP turned off, you'll probably get about the same battery life.

• Is the superdrive in the Core duo Mac mini and the G4 mac mini the same ?

I have a G4 mac mini with a busted super drive and someone is selling a core duo mac mini with ram and a super drive but a bad logic board.
Is the super drive the same in both machines ?
How tough is it to swap it to the other ?
I've done some Hard drive installations and ram installations using the macfixit guide but don't want to bust it I'm certainly not Mr Fix it.
Thanks in advance.

They are not the same.
Compare the PowerPC Mac Mini specs from Archive.org:
"Optional SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW discs at up to 2x speed, writes DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD+RW discs at up to 2.4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed"
To the Intel Mac Mini specs today:
"Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 2.4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed"

• Restore Core Duo to Core 2 Duo?

Can I clone the drive on a Core Duo machine, and, then restore onto a Core 2 DUo and expect all to be fine?
Can I do the opposite, Core @ Duo to Core Duo?
I need to swap 2 machine, one a Core 2 Duo, and, one a Core Duo. MUST I install the OS and load all the software again, or, can I just move the drives around in essence by cloning?

The key to safely and reliably booting a computer from the installation of another computer is how closely the two match. It wouldn't be a good idea to clone a MacBook's drive and use it to book a MacPro. But the difference between your two minis is almost negligible. Go ahead - if over the course of a week or two you find the computer is unstable, you can always perform an archive and install.
Of course since you are talking about cloning, you could also just use the Migration Assistant to move your programs and data to the newer computer.

• After PMU Reset, my Intel Core Duo widget doesent work any more.. normal?

alldough the Istat Nano temp widget does.. are they the same??
thanx..!

Hi,
I had a similar issue... Upgraded Mem to 2G... Everything worked fine for 3 weeks but sometimes I'd crash with the Grey Screen Of Death. Reboot and all's well for a few days... My Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 is a PVR so it is basically on all the time.
so I though Memory Issue...
I ran Hardware Diags and was getting random Memory faulures.each time I ran the test... so I cracked open the mini and ran individual tests to see which SODIMM was the problem... 1 only then the Other only, both in then swapped around etc... I found that each SODIMM worked fine by itself and passed HDiag... then in dual combo It failed a Memtest... but when swapping them around... I could not boot up. Power LED would blink and nothing would happen. Swap memory around and boot fine but HDiag fails memory test...
Basically my 3 week Old RAM was Bad so I took it back and got Replacement... I ran all the HDiags test again on the New Memory... all OK now.
You might have some dodgy RAM

• Mac Mini Core Duo or Power Mac G5?

Ok, so I'm very excited that I'll be making another Mac purchase soon, but I don't have a lot of money.
What I would like to know, is basically whether to get a Mac Mini Core Duo (hooray for todays update) or a little older Power Mac G5 1.6 or 1.8 GHz.
Why the G5 you say? The case is beautiful! Also, it's a bit more upgradable.
I won't be doing a lot of demanding things, mostly internet, some light Photoshop CS, and other OS X features. With the G5, I won't get Boot Camp but that's why I have 3 other PCs.
So which seems more logical or sensible? Both are pretty close price-wise once I configure the Mini.
Thanks for any input! Just want to get some opinions.
(I also know what model G5 to look for with the increased FSB, RAM, etc. I'll only go for the 1.6GHz if the 1.8 offers a substantial performance boost.)

I have a G5 dual 2.0 (one of the original models) and while I don't own a dual core mini, I've had the chance to test a few of them as they have been bought and added to the networks I support. In my experience, the mini has been noticeably faster in pure processing terms, but the limitations of the slower drive speed makes a considerable difference when comparing systems running disk-intensive tasks.
Add that to the fact that as yet Photoshop is not universal and will thus run under Rosetta on the mini, and is in itself an application that uses considerable 'paging' activity (swapping data to and from the hard drive) and you would find that all else being equal, the G5 would generally surpass the mini's performance. The same would not be true of less disk-intensive applications running in native mode on the intel system, where sheer performance of the dual core system would beat out the G5.
Bear in mind however that RAM is a critical factor. Common experience at present suggests that Intel-based Macs typically require rather more RAM than PPC Macs, and you cannot afford to loose track of the fact that with software such as Photoshop, large, fast hard drives and lots of memory are often more critical than sheer power.
Also bear in mind when making a choice, that a G5 system will consume considerably more power and generate more heat as well as requiring more space. If these considerations are not important to you, then in my view at this time the drive speed, expandability and performance of a G5 running non-native power applications would make the older system a more attractive proposition - certainly for the short term.
To me, the real question would be how soon I would be anticipating replacing the system. Neither would cease to be viable in the next few years, but the more the system would cost to buy, the longer it would typically need to remain in service. If the G5 cost significantly more, it would generally be needed to stay in active service long after Photoshop has gone native and the power of a cheaper intel Mac outstripped the capabilities of the G5.

• Upgrade MacBook Pro Core Duo to 802.11n?

Hi everybody,
I would like to upgrade my MacBook Pro's Airport to be capable of using 802.11n.
It looks like it isn't simply a software-upgrade, but I need to replace the internal airport card.
Big question now: which one would work? Which one is recommended?
I found e.g. the Apple AirPort Extreme Wireless Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro MA688Z/A (or /B) which should work. However, it seems hard to come by in Germany. Also I would avoid buying something like QuickerTec's nCard, since I am unsisre it would need special drivers and shipping + VAT makes the price triple.
Woukld anyone know if e.g. the MB363Z or any other models would work in my Core Duo machine?
Also, any caveats when swapping the cards?
Thanks in advance for any helpful comments.
Mike.

Although these people aren't in Germany, you might learn useful information from them:

That's for a Mac Pro, not a MacBook Pro.

• Core 2 Duo Processors in a Core Duo MacBook?

Is there any way I can replace my Core Duo processor with a Core 2 Duo processor?
PowerMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4) I'm a Mac. Mac user since Macintosh 512K.

To expand upon Jim's correct advice, the CPU is soldered to the logic board, making it impractical and next to impossible to swap CPUs.
In any case, the benefits are not as great as anyone would have you believe, and likely not enough to justify the expense even if it was possible.

• I have a Mac mini OSX 10.4.11 Intel Core Duo, 512mb, 1.83 GHz with iTunes 9.0.3. What steps do I need to take to get my music library to my iPad. I dont think I meet the requirements to just upgrad to snow leopard and/or lion. I want the music I paid for

I have a Mac mini OS X 10.4.11, intel core duo processor (not core 2 duo), with 512 mb and 1.83 GHz processor. I only have version 9.0.3 of iTunes because it hasn't let me go higher, which I believe is because of the operating system. I want to get my purchased music from the Mac mini to a different computer (that has the latest version of iTunes) and also my iPad. The Mac mini does not meet the requirements listed to simply upgrade to snow leopard or lion. As far as I can tell. Forgive me if I am lacking here...this is new to me. What can I do to get the music transferred. I have invested alot of money over the past few years on all this music that I should be able to transfer. Thank you in advance if you can help me.

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

• Macbook1,1 Intel Core Duo: Support for 3gig RAM??

Hi All,
I've recently upgraded my rather standard MacBook from 80gig HD 1gig RAM (2x512) to a 320gig HD and 2gig RAM (1 x 2gig card). I really wanted to insert a further 1 gig of ram, thus having a 2gig and 1gig in each slot.
However, the computer doesn't seem to boot with 3gig installed.
System Profiler tells me:
Macbook1,1
Intel Core Duo
2 Ghz
1 processor
2 cores
2MB L2 Cache
2GB memory
667mhz Bus speed
Boot ROM version: MB11.0061.803
SMC version 1.4f12
I keep reading conflicting reports all over the support site, with some saying macbooks can hold a max of 2gig ram and other saying 3gig is supportable.
I fear that my model may be too old to run 3gig? Is there a firmware upgrade or similar that might allow me to expand to 3gig?
Any tips, advice, feedback or even jeers are welcome!
Cheers,
Dan

I keep reading conflicting reports all over the support site, with some saying macbooks can hold a max of 2gig ram and other saying 3gig is supportable.
A Core Duo MacBook supports a maximum of 2GB RAM. A Core 2 Duo MacBook supports 3GB or more depending on the model.
I fear that my model may be too old to run 3gig?
It is too old.

• Imac Core Duo Crashing ......A Cry For Help

I received my eagerly awaited iMac core duo 17' 160gb. I took it out of the box and it work away fine. When I was installing Norton Anti Virus the installer quit before the full install was complete. I then restarted the iMac and the welcome to OS X progress bar completes and after that all that appears is a blue screen. I do have mouse movement but no login window appears. I have tried reinstalling the OS X software from the software restore disc that came with the iMac but this did not fix the problem. I then opened disk utilty on the the software restore disk and did what first aid was available on this disk, but again no fix. I tried booting from a Disk Warrior bootable disk but this disk will not boot. Through total desperation I opened disk utilty on the restore disk and went to intialise the drive, but the drive will not erase.
All suggestions of a fix or any assistance in fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated. To say that I an frustrated, stressed and demented over this would be a understatement.
Thanks in Advance

Last time I installed Anti-Virus on one of my Mac's. It was a terrible experience on my G5. Not to say AntiVirus is bad to install, but currently there is absolutely no reason to install one.
Really... don't waste money or cpu cycles on antivirus until there is a reason, right now there is this golden halo that protects mac from viruses. I really don't know why mac's rarely if ever have a virus, but I really don't question it either.
