Core Audio

I would be interested if any other Powerbook Titanium user has come across the same problem I am having with core audio.
I can only explain the problem as "a stall" or glitch in the sound output. It is very irregular but very annoying. It happens when playing tracks through iTunes and also when I am playing my guitar through Garage Band. The problem seems to be internal as I have the problem with external speakers & earphones.
Unfortunately it is difficult to hear the glitch through the on board speakers.
My battery packed up over a year ago, as they do, haven't replaced it so run off power pack.
ANY IDEAS OUT THERE ?

Which model TiBook do you have? How much RAM is installed? Do you know the speed of your hard drive? What is your hard drive capacity? How much free space do you have on it, now?
From my experience, I find that you can get "glitchy" audio when your hard drive is too slow, too fragmented, too full, or is failing. You can also get the same kind of glitches if you don't have enough RAM, or if your CPU is on the slower side. Aside from those rather simple-to-fix causes, it's possible that the sound board (built-in to the logic board on TiBooks, I think) is bad. That would mean you'd have to replace the entire logic board, which is pretty expensive (less so if you can do it yourself.)
One way to rule out the hard drive would be to run Disk Utilities, to see if the disk is ok, and then running a defragmentation program, such as the one that comes with Norton Utilities. You could also try deleting old, unnecessary files, if your drive is too full. Finally, if you don't have a defrag program, back up your hard drive, reformat it, and only reinstall the programs/files that relate to the problem. You could also install more RAM, but if the problem is not RAM-related, you'd be out the cost of the new RAM and still be at square one.
When did the problem start? Did it start after you installed a new program? Sometimes problems can be caused by software issues, so if you first noticed it after installing something (anything) new, delete it. If the problem goes away, you might be ok.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Good luck!

  • The core audio for Logic 8 has stopped working.

I was successfully running Logic 8, Protools LE and Cubase on a MacPro with Leopard (10.5.5) and a MOTU traveler interface. I loaded on the Ignition Pack bundled with Protools LE (Mbox mini), including Melodyne/Reason/Live 6. This then stopped me opening any of my programs, Logic, Protools, Cubase and Garageband.
I have surfed several forums and found that Melodyne has caused the same problem for others. Following advice given on these forums I have...
    - Deinstalled all new programmes, including all links, files, rewire stuff
    - I have trashed Logic preferences
    - I have completely reinstalled Logic
    - I have updated the latest MOTU drivers and Apple software updates
I can open Logic using Ctrl and selecting 'no' to core audio, but when I change the core audio, either to MOTU or built-in, and enable Logic freezes and I have to force quit. I have read other threads with people having the same problem, but after following all the advice the problem is still there. Help!
Just for info: I cannot not open Cubase, Protools or Garageband, but there is no problem with standalone Kontakt 2, Itunes, Soundtrack Pro, Waveburner or Mainstage, using the MOTU.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Sounds like a problem with an incompatible version of either Melodyne or Rewire.
Rewire is used to connect application. Ex. Reason can run rewired into Logic, the audio output of Reason will appear as a separate audio channel in Logic.
Two choices... see if your version of Rewire can be upgraded to the latest version. (don't know if that's even compatible)
Remove Rewire from your system, move the rewire plugin out of it's folder, to the desktop. (run a search)
The other plugin that might be giving you problems is Melodyne, move the plugin to the desktop. Again, run a search to find this stuff.

  • How do I use 2 Core Audio devices at the same time in Logic w/out switching

Hello, I use the Aardvark Direct Mix usb3 as my audio interface for mic and guitar. I just upgraded to Logic Pro 7 today and was hoping someone could tell me how I could use the Built-in Audio Core Audio driver along with the Direct Mix USB Core Audio Driver at the same time without having to switch Core Audio Driver's and than rebooting Logic. It is very frustrating doing that as well as not being able to hear my Logic audio during playback/record mode when I am trying to record via the USB3. WHat can I do? Thanks! If ther are both core audio, why can I not just use both of them at the same time? Why must a switch back and forth? Thanks!

THanks everyone! awsome article! Thanks for posting it, nh!
The weird thing is, once I go up to the Menu and select Open Aggregate Device Editor in the AUDIO/MIDI setup utility and try to add a new Aggregate Device setup (step # 6 from the link), the only audio device available is the "Built-in Audio". What's weird is when I have the main Audio MIDI Setup utility open, every single drop-down menu/tab has the "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1" device right beneath the "Built-in Audio" option. To me that says that the core audio device is indeed recognized by my computer (obviously since I can record with it using Logic). Can anyone help me with this one? Any suggestions?
Not that it should matter but, the hardware audio interface that I am using is made by the no-longer-existant company once known as Aardvark. I actually had to purchase a third party Core Audio driver just to have it recognized by OS X.
This is the website where I purchased my audio driver :
    http://www.usb-audio.com/
A little more on how this device and it's core audio driver function within Logic . . . (Hopefully this might clarify something I may be screwing up) . . .
I launch Logic with its default Built-in Audio which allows playback of audio from the app. I than go up to Audio Hardware and Drivers and than drop the flip down Driver menu down to the second option, "Direct Mix USB 3 1.0.9.1." Logic than prompts me that I should try to (re)launch Logic Pro to load the appropriate CoreAudio.. I do that. Now I am ready to record guitar through the Direct Mix USB3, I just can't hear anything (unless I use head phones as an output from the Direct Mix).
Anyway, you all probably already knew what I meant so explaining that was pointless. But my question is, if the Driver is obviously recognized by my comp in both the Audio MIDI Setup and in Logic, than why won't the Direct Mix device show up as a possibility for setting up an aggregate device? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hello there,
I'm trying to add a few core audio files from my hard drive the sound effects library in Sound track. iTunes/iPod does not provide a way of copying tracks from an iPod to iTunes except for purchased music. But iTunes can play MP3 files without conversion.
Here are some ways of getting files from an iPod to your PC:
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • How do I find and turn Core Audio On.

When I try to open Logic it stops at “Initializing Core Audio”.
I have read the topics page and carried out all the suggestions including starting with the control key down to get into logic. When I do this logic opens and a box comes up with Launch Core Audio Driver, Yes or No. If yes, it freezes, if no I can load it up, but there is no core audio at all when I do.
In the inspector, the CORE AUDIO is greyed out. I have gone to Preferences and ticked the Core Audio box and ticked “Apply” and then it freezes again. Logic cannot see or find the Logic Core Library.
How do I turn Core Audio on? I have No Sound at all. There is no instrument list ( EXS 24, ES1, ES2, Sculpture, Ultrabeat etc) coming up in the I/O box, it only says No Plugin. When I load a previous song there is a line through the I/O instrument and no sound. In the arrange window the audio levels show that there is activity but there is no sound and the instruments are crossed out.
It seems like there is a communication problem between the program and the Core Audio sound banks. Could this have something to do with the drivers? If so, Where can I get the drivers from and how do I put them in.
Does anyone know how to get inside Logic maybe to a lower level so that I can tick some box to get the sounds back again.
If I re-install the program will it fix the problem?
Sorry to be so long-winded but I am in a mess with this, so any kind of advise would be very much appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Roy.

I haven't had this problem, but on other computers, I have seen some sound functions only work if you don't run certain other things on start-up. Try opening System Resources:Accounts:<your account>:Login Items, and clearing out the list.
    Hope you solve it!

  • Help needed, can no longer insert Battery3 as a Multi, Core Audio Error.

    Hi all,
Well I have been using a few different Motu interfaces as of late, the Ultralite, Traveler and now the 828 MK2. Each device has had no troubles with hBattery as a muti untill now the 828.
I have loaded all sorts of other mutli devices but for some reason battery is a no go, I get a core audio error of -1 ?
Now I have yet to install a different driver set since it was my understanding all Motu drivers are the same and the Audio interface driver page shows the 828 so I figured all was well.
Any one have any ideas as to what I can do? This one has me stumped.
    Thanks in advance!

I have the exact same issue, battery 3 won't load as a multi. it's authorized and works as a stereo audio unit, but when i try to load the multi, i also get error code -1. btw, this happened today - yesterday the multi worked. i already trashed the logic and battery prefs, no go.

  • Logic Pro 8 Crashes from Core Audio - Tried Support Info

This is my first question but I've been a Mac user since 1993. I have a MBPro 2.16 with 2GB ram. I have Logic 6.4 installed and it has been working well with the USB dongle. My factory HD was only 100GB so I just upgraded to a 500GB hybrid drive. I have Logic Pro 8, NI Komplete 5, Sampletank 2XL, MOTU Mach 5 and several other plugs that work fine on my G5 Dual 1.8. I upgraded the HD on the laptop so my Logic setup couuld be portable for use at my job as a band director.
I installed the new HD in an OWC external case. I started with a clean install of 10.5. The laptop still had the latest version of 10.4 (11?) as the OS so I wanted to start from Panther. After the fresh install of 10.5 I restarted from the external drive and had my settings transferred to it. Everything worked fine with either drive as the startup device.
I then installed all my music software from the original DVDs ending with Logic so it would see all the plugins on it's initial start up. I then ran software update several times until no new updates were found. I had no problems registering the plugs or getting them to work independently of Logic. I then transferred the new drive into the MBPro as the primary drive.
When Logic starts it crashes when Core Audio is initialized. The program never did authorize a single plugin as i never makes it to the setup program.
    I have:
    1. Started Logic with the Control key and it works fine (with no plugs or driver functions). The support documentation offers that help but does not specifically mention what to do afterward to get to full functionality.
    2. I have tried to access the Audio Units Mamager in the Preferences but noting happens when I select that item (Tried many times)
    3. The Support documents mention a key command that will select the AU Manager but there are no keys assigned and the Key Commands window will not let me add any so forcing Logic to initialize Core Audio has been a bust.
    4. I noticed the mention in one of the support docs that there might be an issue with the language selected and made sure engligh was at the top of that list.
    5. I have removed all the plugs from the library folder and tried to start without them to test for a conflict with one of the plugs.
    6. Today I tried reinstalling Logic (over the old copy) with no change.
I'm at a loss of what to do next. Does the Core Audio need to be upgraded somehow seperately from the OS? Could the old version of Logic be causing problems? I've tried starting the 6.4 and it hangs at the Initializing Core Audio also when started from the new drive. Could the Hybrid drive be an issue? Thank you in advance for your help.

Pancenter - You hit the nail on the head. I had not heard about the Rewire conflict. As I was installing all of my music software I discovered a Digi/Avid extras disc that came with my Digi 003R. I had not intalled that originally when I installed Protools LE so I went ahead and added it as I upgraded to Protools 8. I believe the Propellerhead software came from there. Removing those files freed up Logic. Everything verified/loaded properly except the MOTU Mach 5 and all of my Bias Peak plugs. I belive the Bias plugs work fine with my G5 in my home studio but I use those more for mastering than music creation so I may not have needed them in Logic. I will troubleshoot those in the Macbook tonight. Thanks so much for your help.

  • Core Audio Components Missing After Clean Install and Update to 10.3.9?

I did a clean install of 10.3.x onto my hard disk and then updated to 10.3.9 through Software Update.
Before this install I'd been running 10.3.9 (my disk crashed -- or so I thought -- hence the re-install of all above). I'd been running a music recording program and taking advantage of Apple's Core Audio AU components (e.g. AUDelay, etc), which should be in /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components/ or something like that. Now they are missing entirely.
How do I get them back? Where are they to find?
    Thanks!

It was a problem with the 3rd party software -- I hadn't run the installation update to interface with the AU Components -- after the reinstall. Thanks.

  • I Mac(OS 10.6.5) Core Audio MIDI doesn't work

I just bought iMac. Problem is Core Audio/MIDI doesn't work at all.
I installed Logic Studio, Battery..but none of them working with MIDI interface.
When I worked with Macbook(OS 10.5) before, there was no problem at all.
I Used Mbox2 for audio interface and mic pre, and master keyboard with USB port as MIDI device.
Now I can't work at all with my music project because of audio/MIDI problem.
I tried to fix it opening Audio MIDI setup but I only get the message saying..
    "Required Software extensions are missing"
and when I go to the the page after clicking OK, then it says that I need to get supported by software company for upgrade, which I have the latest version...
also I get the message "Core MIDI quits unexpectedly...".
These two message pop up every time I open Logic Studio too.
I hope solution for this matter.
I really need to focus on producing my music...

So, after long work around which failed this is how i made it work!
I think the problem is the latest update of the system (10.6.5) I am back now on 10.6.2 and all is fine : this is how i managed it based on the fact that the whole thing was working fine on my MBP.
    1. download a copy of SuperDuper from the net
2.Open MBP and then firewire Target mode the iMac to the MBP
    3. with the SuperDuper clone the Hard disk of the MBP to the iMac
This will erase all on your iMac and make its hard disc exactly the same as the MBP; it also makes it bootable.
    4.open iMac alone
    5. insert the original system dvd for the iMac and install the SnowLeopard system BUT DO NOT UPGRADE
6.restart as demanded and you should be on 10.6.2
with your desktop and hard disk running exactly as it was on your MBP
7 when opening Logic (or the other pro apps like FCStudio pro then you will be asked for your serial numbers which it duly accepts
    8. all then should be running fine
Total time depends on size of your MBP hard disk (for me it took c. 3 hours including the reinstall 10.6.2) but all is now as it should be

  • WARNING! :Quicktime 7 and Digidesign Core Audio issue

I recently attempted to upgrade from QT 6.5.2 to 7.0.2.
    ---I am running OS 10.3.9--- (althoughaffects 10.4.x)
    ---Descripiton of issue---
    -QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg (7.0.2) installed "successfully".
-After "Restart" a QT set-up/launch script tries to execute (this is normal).
-SBBOD ("spinning beach ball of death") on-screen for approx. 30 secs followed by applescript error message "Applescript (or appleevent) timed out"
-Quicktime will not open ! Although a black triangle appears under the QT icon in the Dock, the QT app does not appear on-screen and is not mentioned in the left of the top menu bar (as an opened app normally would).
-Running the "top" command in Terminal (or checking "Activity Monitor")reveals QT 7 has opened and is consuming 98% - 100% of CPU power. I then ran a "kill" command to quit it (could have used "Force Quit")
-Repairing Permissions, trashing the ".plist file" (preferences),Re-installing, trashing the app and plist and then re-installing - nothing worked .. the problem was looking serious !!!
    WORSE STILL...
-...after running 7.0.1 and 6.5.2 re-installer to go back to where I had started
both Quicktime (now 6.5.2) AND iTunes (v 4.x) were totalled ! QT would not open files (although the app itself DID open) and iTunes would not even launch ! OUCH - an OS re-install now looked likely !
    - Checked Apple Discussions (nothing) and phoned Applestore Tech (SoHo, NY). Half-way through the call I discovered the likely cause (with the help of Google) - an issue between QT 7 and Digidesign's Core Audio ! They were'nt aware of the issue although they are now and will probably post something about it.
-Seems to affect 10.4 users too. Digidesign has not yet released a patch and Apple clearly did not anticipate such difficulties when coding QT7. All versions of QT7 are affected, as are many different PT set-ups !
    ---Issue Fix---
-An OS re-install is the only fix I am aware of at the moment.

    I had the same problem.
I had to find a folder called "HAL" somewhere in Library and trash it. (I found this on the Digidesign User's Group site)
Once you trash it you need to download the appropriate CoreAudio driver from below. Install it and you should be ok.

  • Core Audio Overload - Will a New Fire Wire Unit Help?

I use a G5 2.5Ghz Quad with 6GB of RAM and an Edirol FA-101. I'm finding that the 'Core Audio Overload' is becoming a huge irritant and I've tried multiple driver configurations in Logic Pro 7.2 to correct the problem.
Watching the performance, I had 64% of my processor power idle and 1.79GB of RAM free when it last occurred. Given that so much system resource is idle, my only conclusion is that my Edirol FA-101 is not adequate for the tasks I'm setting it. Before I spend the money, does anyone agree or am I barking up the wrong tree? Can Core Audio overload due to the sound unit being used?
I'm thinking of a Fire Wire 800 unit like the RME Fireface - if anyone has experience of FW800 units I'll be glad to hear from you and from anyone who knows whether it will help Core Audio process information in time.

I'm not using a seperate drive for my Logic files. I've worked through the link you posted on settings several times, and it's Steinberg's 'Halion Symphonic Orchestra' that's crippling my system. I watch the system performance as the song plays and the second core peaks out every time while the Disk I/O meter barely registers a blip which is why I haven't put anything onto a seperate drive, though I certainly shall be.
Will getting Logic projects on a seperate drive work to a greater extent for Core Audio? Halion Symphonic Orchestra uses huge files, but I can't understand why I have such a large amount of Idle system with the Core Audio Overload?
Would an RME Fireface not help Core Audio in its processing? If I can avoid the cost, I will. I'm even using a Pro Care appointment on Tuesday afternoon to see if there's anything else I can do, I'm that desperate!
If I move the Halion Symphonic Orchestra to a seperate drive and then the Logic files to another, would that be more benificial to system performance?
    Beer anyone?

  • How does Core Audio set sample rate?

When I play a particular movie in QuickTime, the audio and video are out of sync. The movie plays fine on other computers.
This Mac Pro (OS 10.6.8) is used exclusively for Pro Tools and Final Cut Pro. The audio hardware is a Pro Tools HD Native card:
Native card --> Pro Tools Digital I/O boxes --> Lavry D/A converters --> monitors
The sample rate of the Digital I/O boxes is set by an external master clock, a Lavry Gold A/D converter.
I opened the DigiDesign Core Audio Manager and it says:
    Connected @ 44.1K, 32 In/32 Out, Buffer Size 512
Yet the movie is at 48K (I know because I created it in Final Cut Pro), and the external clock is set at 48K. So, I don't know where the 41K in the Digidesign Core Audio Manager came from. This is why I am guessing the problem is sample rate.
Please help me understand what sets the sample rate.
Does the application using Core Audio set it?
If so, how is this made consistent with the sample rate set for the hardware by the external master clock?
Do I have to be sure I always change the external clock setting to be consistent with the movie being played?
BTW, I have not had a sync problem when I play video in Final Cut Pro..........it is always in sync. So, I have never worried about how Core Audio works. The sync problem is only with QuickTime.

    Well, here is more information:
    - I reinstalled QuickTime 7 and did many other things (trashed preferences, etc)
    - I set the audio hardware (Pro Tools/HD Native card) to 48k
    - I checked the Digi CoreAudio Manager and it said "Connected at 44.1K", even though the hardware was set to 48K
    - I played the problem videos, and all are now in sync
    - I check the Digi CoreAudio Manager and it still says 44.1K
    - I checked the hardware and it is now set to 44.1K
I know that the videos are 48K, because I created them in Final Cut Pro X.
Does this mean that QuickTime 7 always converts videos to 44.1K, regardless of their sample rate?

  • Logic Pro Wont Start Up....  HELP.  Core AUDIO Problems

OK here goes.. I have been working with Logic since December. I have a lot of project that I am working on and I have this movie sound track that is my biggest thing. Anyway, I have been using logic pro 8 with my Motu Ultralite. Its been working just fine. I got a Mbox yesterday because one of the producers I am working with on this movie uses protools so I got the Mbox to work in Protools 08. I finished my session in Logic...> hooked up the Mbox and tested it out with Protools 8. It worked fine. Now today I tried to launch logic and it would not open. It gets to "initiallizing Core audio" and then it crashes and quits. Can someone help me on this one. I have a deadline to meet today and I have the finished project and cant access my Logic. I am going crazy seriously. Can anyone help. I have did the if You need a crash report I will post one here. PLEASE HELP!!!!
    PJ

Ive been using Logic 8 and FirePod for some time now and this semester enrolled in a Pro tools 8 class at Foothill using my Mbox. Things seems to be working with both logic and protools, so far other than exporting my sessions over to OMF format, mainly a vanilla import, no effects, automation, etc gets thru, but I digress....
Check to make sure that your system still see's the Motu device in the system profiler, and open the system log inside the console application within the Utilities folder and then watch what gets reported to the console while firing up Logic.
To get more help, include what os version your running and the hardware; Mac Pro, Macbook, etc... Stating the version of the programs, and of course have you applied system updates on the your machine....
Im running a Mac Pro Intel with 10.5.6 with all the latest updates......

  • Core Audio Disk too slow or System Overload message

Hi, I hope somebody can help me. I've seen the topics about this already posted, but my situation is a little different. I'm only playing back three tracks of recorded audio and two EXS24 sampler instruments. I have the Logic compressor on my bass track and thats it! My Disk IO meter shows no load at all as well as the audio meter. However, I'm still getting the core audio disk to slow or system overload message. I figure with a dual 2.7 G5 and 2.5 Gigs of ram I should be unstoppable. What's happening?

The drives in the rear positions are on an ATA-100 Bus, those in the front are on an ATA-66 bus. The CD is on an ATA-33 bus, and no Hard drives should be sharing the CD cable. ATA-66 and ATA-100 are plenty fast enough not to be a bottleneck, as long as you are not experiencing low-level correctable Disk Errors.
A Disk Error will result in retries, both Hardware and Software, which often produces the data, corrected, after a delay.
My recommendation would be to find a time when you can back up all data from the troublesome drive, and take the \[several hours] to Initialize with the "Zero all Data" option. This writes Zeroes to every data block, then does a read-after-write to check the data.
If the Drive's error correction was required to recover the just-written zeroed data, that block is declared bad, and the drive will make a near-permanent substitution of a nearby spare block for the one found defective. This process has the effect of laundering out marginal blocks and returning the drive to "factory fresh" condition of all good blocks.

  • Core Audio: Selected Driver not found. (-10202) error message and speakers don't work

Apple just replaced my hard drive and now I'm noticing that I have no sound coming out of my internal speakers or earphone jack.  When I try to use garage band I get the following error message:
    Core Audio:
    Selected Driver not found (-10202)
I read their article on the subject; I go to system preferences, sound then output devices where I'm supposed to select my device except there are none listed.  I tried to fix the problem by reinstalling the operating system using the CD's that came with the MacBook Air but that didn't work either.
Here's the other problem, when I download the software update the update never loads.  The status bar just sits there even when I let my pc alone over night.
    Any suggestions??
FYI, i can't easily walk into a mac store for assistance.. gotta catch a plane to a different island.

Update your Apogee and Symphony drivers to Mountain Lion versions...
But the bigger question is.. How did you install Mountain Lion on a G5?
