Core Center wont show NB temp on K8N Neo2 Platinum

Is it just me or does core center not show my north bridge temp? i can control the fan speeds for the cpu and nb and it shows my cpu and system temp, but under my nb temp it doesn't show anything.
Is it because the board doesn't have a sensor for the north bridge? or is core center just screwing up??

There is no thing as system/case temp sensor on theese mobos.Only cpu & nv-chipset .
The temperature you see in corecenter as systemp is actually the nvidia chipset temperature .
Northbridge memory functions is taken over by the athlon 64 , thats why MSI finds it more reasonable to display
the nv-chip temp as systemp (remember that corecenter is an allround app for all msi mobos) .
Rest of the nb/sb functions are implemented as a single chip solution in the nvidia chipset chip.
So the traditional nb/sb solution is no longer existing.
The Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX each features its own integrated memory controller—single-channel for the Athlon 64 and dual-channel for the Athlon 64 FX. Instead of connecting to a traditional northbridge, these CPUs connect to a video card through a HyperTransport Graphics Tunnel. Data intended for components like PCI cards, disk drives, and USB peripherals is then routed through a HyperTransport I/O Hub, which is embedded in the core logic chip.

  • NForce3 chipset temp on K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hello I recently installed a new cpu and gfx cooler (Scythe Ninja Plus & ATI Silencer 5)
I had plans to install ZM-NB47J to but it just was to little space between gfx cooler and nf3 chipset.
My new coolers dosent give any "fresh" air to nf3 chipset like the stock ones so my System temp is up to 41-43C from 36C
What are normal temp on nf3 chipset and how hot can it get before my system gets unstable and maby cause damage to my motherboard?

My fan broke almost out of the box and with some talking I got a vantec cooler. It fits under those long video cards. The cooler is the same size as stock, cooper, larger fan, and heftier
It's always worth it to pick up a couple of those Vantec GPU coolers whenever you see 'em - they're the perfect replacement for the crap stock chipset fan - I put one on my Neo4 Plat as soon as I took the mobo out of it's box.
My Nf4 chipset stays at 32-35C no matter what.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum wont start up

After installing a new K8N Neo2 it worked perfectly for 1 day, no problems at all.
The day after nothing happened. When the psu is turned on it only gives a short flash on the leds, the fans turns for a second and then everything is of.
Have tried with only the most necessary connected to the psu, switched to only 1 RAM in different positions etc. Have cleared cmos every time.
D bracket leds are showing 4 reds for a short second and some times two greens diagonal upper left to lower right and the other two are red.
    Any ideas???

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum cant upgrade to BIOS 1.4, Windows wont boot.

    Hello
I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and I cant upgrade to BIOS 1.4.  I have tried everything and cannot get Windows XP to boot with BIOS 1.4.
I have reset the BIOS, set defaults, cleared the battery etc but when I load BIOS 1.4 (from a 98SE an ME boot dish and even from the Live Update?
The only solution is to rebuild Windows after loading BIOS 1.4???
    Help

    Hi !
Well, I have that problem, too. I think the reason is a new RAID-BIOS-Version built in the BIOS-Update. I´ve tried the beta-versions V1.51 and V1.5X, too - but they won´t run anyway.
My WinXp hangs while booting (before the WINDOWS-XP-Logo appears, or while fading in...). I cannot reinstall Windows completely because, when I install the 2 raid-drivers, the installation routine hangs before the licensetext - when I don´t install the drivers i cannont install on the raid-drive (beacuase the installation routine shows 2 hdds).
I think, a new driver will solve this problem, but I don´t know where to find it....

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 1.9 Bios & Dual Core Procs?

Just curious and I hope some can answer this question for me. I just sold my trusty K8N Neo2 Platinum to a lucky m8 on eBay. It is sporting the bios revision 1.9 I know that he is going to be running a dual core proc, but I am unsure if he has a single core proc handy to get it up and running so he can flash to one of the latest bioses that supports dual core procs. If he doesn't have a single core proc to get started, will the board at least crank up with a dual core proc so he can get the bios flashed to BIOS Rev. 1.B? Geesh I do hope so because I am leaving town for 10 days on Thursday and will have no time to gut my new setup to reinstall the board and flash it for him. Here is hoping for some good news.

  • Possible to flash bios on k8n neo2 platinum without single core athlon64?

    Hi.
I just bought a k8n neo2 platinum v1 and also managed to find a decently priced athlon64 X2 3800+ (which should work fine with this mobo according to msi's website and a number of forum posts I've seen across the web). The cpu hasn't arrived yet, but I'd appreciate if someone could answer something I'm wondering about before that happens. I've read that the mobo (like many others) will need a bios update to use dual core cpu's. A problem I have is that I don't have a single core athlon64 to use for flashing it. I did read on several forums and in some articles that a lot of mobos would be able to boot the dual core as a single core without the bios update, in which case I should be able to flash the bios with a boot disk, or similar. However, it occurred to me that it may only be nforce4 mobos that could do this.
Now, I'd really appreciate if anyone knew whether I could flash the bios with the dual core working as a single core, or if I have to start looking for a single core athlon64, to use for that purpose alone.
    Thanks in advance!

Finally got it assembled (after having to order a new fan, since I couldn't get the old one to work)!
It worked to boot without flashing first, the BIOS recognized the cpu as an unknown hammer cpu. After flashing (which went without any sign of trouble), I'm now up and running
    Thanks for the help  :D
Tried to used the CPUZ to check on the cpu version? Cos dual core doesn have a hammer but manchester only. Gd luck.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum NB Temp

Does anyone know what the safest max temp is for the NB? I'm running an HTPC and noise is a factor. Using Fan Speed at 100% (CPU & NB) and Prime95, my temps were CPU 45 - NB 34. At livingroom noise levels (fans at 40%) Temps were CPU 48 - NB 40.

The max temp is bout 70-75C.
I think that maybe okay for CPU but NB chip is probably lower (about 50c max).  Mine goes to around 40c with OC of HTT to 1060mhz.
If you do not OC then you could consider a Zalman passive NB cooler (if you have decent airflow in your case) but beware that the chip is very close to the AGP slot and may block longer cards (eg. 6800GT).

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G BIOS problem

    I recently bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum-54G mainboard with W7025NMS v1.3  092204 revision of BIOS.
AMD Athlon64 3000+ 939 is installed on the mainboard, with 2x512 GEIL PC3200 memory modules in dual channel configuration working on default frequency of 200MHz. CPU is recognized correctly as AMD Athlon64 3000+ on startup.
Mainboard’s BIOS seems to be corrupted. In Cell Menu options, in the upper left part of the screen (printed blue) are processor and DDR working timings:
Current CPU Clock 1810MHZ, Current DDR Clock 200MHz.
Aggressive Timings and Dynamic Overclocking values are [Disabled] (processor working on its defaulf settings); Spread Spectrum is [Disabled] while all DRAM Configuration settings are set to [Auto].
While entering HT frequency settings, (locked to [x5])  there are no other values to select – empty, and there is no way to leave it (ESC doesn’t help, the only thing possible to do is to reset the computer by pressing the Reset button on the chassis), but  the HT frequency settings were enabled when I loaded Fail-Safe settings, offering [1x], [1.5x], [2x], [2.5x], [3x], [4x], [5x].
Adjust CPU Ratio settings offer only [StartUp], [x4]~[x9] values, but as I understood by reading the manual there should be [StartUp], [x4]~[x20].
CPU Voltage, Memory Voltage and AGP Voltage are set to default.
CPU-Z, as well as SiSoft Sandra 2004 and SiSoft Sandra 2005 and MSI CORE CELL show that processor works at a core speed ~1005MHz, showing multiplier locked on x5.0 and HTT locked at ~200MHz, while the voltage is ~1.05V!
I downloaded the latest BIOS revision (v1.4), did the BIOS flash, but the problem remains!
    Anybody, help!

AMD64 CPOU's have a lock on CPU ratios which varies according to the specification of the chip. therefore the multiplier available in your bios stops at the max multiplier allowed by amd for your cpu.
As an example i'm running a 3200 754 which has a maximum muliplier of 11 so that is the max i see in bios.

Hi all, just got myself a 64bit MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum board & a 3200+,am happy with it but a couple of days ago i got a blue screen with a long message that i didnt have time to read before the pc rebooted, after the reboot i checked the event viewer log file in administrative tools/control panel but couldnt narrow it down as my particular error code wasnt among the possible causes.
Among some of the possible causes were incorrectly installed USB drivers or the BIOS,i downloaded the latest BIOS update before this problem started(V1.40) which i am using now,i used the MSI live update software to flash it which i did in windows mode.Sorry for prattling on!well it did it again tonight and i managed to read a bit of the writing on the blue screen which mentioned flashing the bios to the latest version.I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem and if so could you please advise me? My K8N Neo Platinum [754] did not include a NB fan. But this usually means the overall size of the heatsink is larger. If you remove the fan from yours, the size of the heatsink will not be big enough to cool your NB. As for temps, I've never seen my NB get hotter than 45'C. Note that the core on my NB should be slightly different than yours.
You could try to use the BIOS fan control for the NB. If set correctly, it should reduce some noise.

  • Need help with k8n neo2 platinum

I've just installed a new k8n neo2 platinum s939 board with a venice core 3200+ cpu the htt is 2000 and multiplier 10x.
I've gone to the core cell menu and set the htt to 4x (seemed to be this at default) and the max mem clock at 166 (more about this in a moment), the fsb will go quite easily up to 250mhz even 255mhz, but when I try 260 Mhz the machine when it reboots shows the initial slash screen but then goes to a blank screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand corner, I can't even get back into the bios setup without clearing the cmos.
The odd thing is that the adjust cpu vid is showing a voltage of 1.50 and not 1.40 or startup.
Anyway with the fsb at 250mhz the bios screen is showing the Current ddr clock at 208 mhz ( not the max memclock setting of 166) the memory in the motherboard ( a crucial 512meg ddr333 single stick) seems to perform OK according to memtest which shows no errors after 2 cycles.
Any attempt to get to 260mhz fsb appears to fail even by upping the cpu vid to 1.525v unless i adjust the cpu voltage setting which by default is set to (by cpu vid) to +3.3%. Doing this enables me to get to fsb 260mhz but the memtest fails ( even when I set the max memclock to 133, which shows my current ddr speed at 174mhz, well below the 208mhz which appeared stable with the fsb at 250mhz?)
So firstly why are there two cpu voltage settings in the bios when my manual only shows 1 (there is no mention of this cpu vid setting?
How is it that my memory is stable at 208mhz with a fsb of 255mhz but unstable at 174mhz with the fsb set at 260mhz?
Why does the memory clock lock not appear to be working, the memory should be fixed at 166mhz but infact increases with fsb?
    I have bios revision 1.5.
Please help as I am not familiar with the bios settings for this nforce 3 chipset, they seem rather odd to me. I'm sure my venice core 3200+ cpu can get beyond 250mhz fsb, I have another pc with a venice core 3000+ cpu which runs quite happily at 270mhz fsb.
PS I've tried reducing the htt to 3x but the same thing happens.

OK further feed back, I can get to over 260mhz fsb but the system is not stable the memory runs OK with mem test but I have problems with prime95.
I had to up the cpu core voltage to 1.53v to get to 260mhz using the cpu voltage setting in the bios and setting a 5% increase. increasing the cpu vid setting to 1.55v did not seem to do anything at all the core voltage was still at 1.43v.
I upped the mem voltage to 2.6v from 2.5 but still could not get the system to be stable, it may be that the memory is holding the system back but I don't want to pay for better memory at the moment. Unless anyone has got any other ideas it looks like I may be forced to settle with 250mhz, well still a 500mhz increase maybe not that bad. I've now to try 3d benchmarking using my radeon 9600xt and 3dmark 03.

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. • New CPU, Msi K8n neo2 platinum - no boot!

    Greetings!
    I got the following components:
    *MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum -54g MB
    *4 x 512mb Geil Value Ram
    *Gainward 7800GS+ Bliss 512mb AGP
    *Samsung Spinpoint 500gb SATA HD
    *Corsair 620HX (620W) PSU
*CPU AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core (upgrade from AMD 3000+ Winchester)
I recently upgraded my PC with a new HD, more ram, new CU Fan/heatsink - on an AMD 3000+ (Winchester). PC wouldn't boot - I did however manage to fix it. I think it was because of the ram, one of the bricks had some dust on it. Since then, my pc has worked 100%...
Today, however, I got a new PSU and CPU in the mail! A Corsair 620W PSU and an AMD OPTERON 180 Dual. I carefully cleaned the surface on the heatsink etc, and applied an appropriate amount of "Arctic Alumina" on the CPU/heatsink (as followed per instructions from Arctic). When I have connected everything, and fire my pc up - it just won't boot.. (The monitor won't light up).
Since then, I have carefully checked all wires, unplugged/replugged etc.
    But it just won't boot!
I do have the latest bios (1.0D), so it should support my CPU.
I should mention some "weird" things, though. When I try to boot up, everything seems normal (All fans are running), but there are no lights on my case! And I can't turn off the PC while holding down the "power" button on my case. I can't reset either.. as soon as I turn the PC on (by turning on the PSU power switch), the PC starts running. Normally I would have to push the button on my case. ALSO: I have cleared CMOS, still a black screen. And I have tried 2 different monitors, so I know it aint that either.
My old PSU was a Chieftec 360W one (and my case is a Chieftec also). The old PSU was connected to "SFAN2" on my MB,.. my new PSU isn't connected to any "SFAN" at all.. I doubt that has anything to do with the problem though?
Any suggestions on what I might do ?
Edit: D-bracket shows this (Yellow, red, red, yellow):
    BIOS Sign On
    - This will start showing information about logo, processor brand name, etc... - It stops here. No boot screen

remove power cord from the PSU(else will not work) and Clear CMOS Guide.
leave one memory stick only in a 1st DIMM slot near to CPU socket and try to boot.
    Done & done.
    Still no boot screen :(

  • Tons of K8N Neo2 Platinum problems

Ok, I installed this board 2 days ago and everything was fine, since then my USB has stopped working, and I mean all of them, even onboard.  My temp reporting has become ridiculous, like jumping from -127C to 200C Core temp.

If you guys have already answered these questions I'm sorry to be asking again but I did scan thru 15 pages of posts looking for answers.
    Thanks in advance.

Usually this comes from running the Nvidia System Utility.
To fix, unplug power from back of PC.  Move CMOS reset jumper to clear position and leave for now.  Then remove the CMOS battery.  Wait about 10 minutes, reinstall batter, put CMOS jumper back in correct position, and finally plug in power.
Your BIOS settings will be reset and you should first load optimized, reboot, and then you can go back in to BIOS to put your settings back.
We've all been there done that.  Later

  • SATA HDD installation on K8N Neo2 Platinum, Non-RAID, Non-Bootable

    Hi-
I’m a rank newbie on this forum (first post). I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo, which I’ve recently gotten up and running, with Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a single IDE drive. I would now like to add 2 SATA drives. I don’t need or want the SATA drives to operate in a RAID array, nor do I want them to be bootable. I want to use them independently for data storage. I read the following thread (I am posting here on a separate thread per the author’s wishes not to get his original thread too junked-up) :
Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I have not yet plugged-in either of my SATA drives, because I don’t want to risk corrupting my existing boot (IDE) drive. I just had a few questions about the procedure given in the referenced thread, in the Single Drive Setup:
    - Step 14 States: “Make sure the “RAID Mode” is Stripping and Striping Block at 64k or Optimal. Hit F7 (Finish)”. Is this correct for a single non-boot drive?
    - Step 22 States: “As most of you know when you enter the Setup for Win2k/WinXP you will need to hit F6 to load additional drivers for other SCSI devices.” I assume this means I need to boot from the Windows CD. Is this true even if I already have Windows installed on an IDE HDD on this system? At what point will I need to hit <F6> ? Will I be prompted to do so?
    - I have downloaded (from the MSI website) the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total). Should I put these on a floppy? Or can I access them from a directory on my OS HDD?
    - Should I go ahead and plug-in both of the 2 SATA drives I want to add to the system before beginning the driver installation? The only reason I would consider installing them one at a time is if it eliminated any confusion between RAID vs. independent (I want independent operation). If I do install them one at a time, do I have to install the driver twice?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    OK Thanks JeanGuy and ssjkakaroto,
I have connected both of my SATA drives. They are enabled in BIOS but not set to RAID. I booted up to Windows on my IDE drive. In Disk Manager, the display shows Disk 0 (C: System), Disk 1 and Disk 2 as uninitialized, and my DVD (D:) drive. At this point, I could probably go ahead and run the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard to get these disks formatted and be dome with ot now. Before I do that though, I just have a couple of more questions.
    - I had already loaded the nVidia nForce3 system driver prior to installing the SATA drives, but I went ahead and did that again after installing the SATA drives and restarting Windows. I used Live Update, which went out to the MSI site and found version 5.03 of the  nVidia nForce3 system driver. I'm not sure how to find the "Nvidia 5.10 driver package which include the latest SATA driver", ssjkakaroto referred-to. The Live Update install procedure did ask if I wanted to install IDE driver and I said yes. It then asked to over-write what I already had there (I said yes to that too). As the file names streamed-by, I though I saw some filenames with nv... listed. So, bottom line, is I'm not sure if I have the lates and greatest nVidia SATA drivers installed. How can I find out what drivers are installed?
    - As I mentioned in my previous post, I have also downloaded and unzipped the NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA Nforce Storage Controller (20 files, 1.3 MB total) from the MSI site; however, I don't know how to "install" this now that I have the files. There are a couple of .exe and a .bat file (bit no setup.exe).
I may already have everything I need to partition and format these drives. I just want to bve sure I'm not skipping a step that is essential to optimal performance.
    Thanks -
