Core dump: dbx - analysing C++ object
Hi,
Is there a way to analyse the content of a C++ object from a core dump? I'm looking at crash that occurred in a member method and I need to see the values of some member attributes of this object. First of where is the "this" pointer stored? Is there a documentation that describes what the object layout is in memory?
Thanks in advance.
I am facing a somewhat similar symptom. dbx6.0 (SunOS5.6/purify4.5.1) will core dump when I say "run <arg1> <arg2>" at the prompt while tracing a purified-executable; dbx will NOT dump core if that executable is not purify'd. The message I get is:
dbx: internal error: signal SIGSEGV (no mapping at fault address)
dbx's core dump will appear in </vol03/kiran/tmp>
Abort(coredump)

Core dump: dbx stack trace
Can anyone point to a good doco on how to interpret stack trace from Solaris core file?
For example,
strcasecmp(0xfedf7cd8, 0x47534b53, 0x4b3ee0, 0x619c50, 0xff327234, 0xff33c000), at 0xff2cf390
what do those 6 addresses in brackets represent?

Help: dbx core dump, solaris 10, amd64
Hi,
Recently I run into the following when I debug a core dump,
(dbx) where
dbx: internal error: signal SIGSEGV (no mapping at the fault address)
dbx's coredump will appear in /tmp
Abort (core dumped)
-bash-3.00$ dbx -V

To remove this message, put `dbxenv suppress_startup_message 7.7' in your .dbxrc
(dbx)
I wonder if anyone has some idea of this bug, is it known? Is it fixed in sunstudio 12 u1?
If needed, I can supply /tmp/core dumped by dbx.

Dump complete java VM state as core dump (not via OS) possible?
Hi everyone,
I've a problem debugging an application.
Background: Sometimes my application comes to a very unlikely state, which at the moment results in an error message. The stack trace alone has no great value, since this state is cause by the interaction of more than one thread. The state is resolved throwing an exception, the program continues normally.
Goal: If I reach this state, I want to suspend the application, dump the complete state of all java threads, objects, ... (complete java memory core dump) to analyse it later.
Question: Is there a possibility to generate such dumps?
Just thinking:
One posibility would be, to send a signal from the vm to some external program (e.g. udp packet), this program attaches a standard OS-level debugger (e.g. gdb under linux), dumps the core, resumes app, detach. But I guess reconstruction of internal VM state from complete dump is rather hard, is it?
I've looked at jdb, to see if it has some java-core-dump functions, but it seems not to be so. Are there alternative implementations, or helper scripts that make jdb loop over all java object addresses and dump them?
Does someone known about the jdb remote debugging interface? Is the protocol public, can I implement such a feature on myself?Hi everyone,
I was looking for a way to dump the complete state of a JVM (all runing threads, objects, ...) and afterwards to analize the dumped data. I have found a thread(http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=735052) here in the forums with some explainations how this could be done using the Java 2 sdk 1.5.0 - troubleshooting tools (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/tooldocs/experimentaltools.html).
I've made a small application, which starts a thread and just prints out continously some messages to the console.
After that I attached with gdb to the running process as described, and generated a core file.
Unfortunatelly on calling jdsadebugd with the core dump it throws the following exception:
jsadebugd /..../jdk1.5.0_07/bin/java core.18294 DebServ
Attaching to core core.18294 from executable /.../jdk1.5.0_07/bin/java and starting RMI services, please wait...

Thanks/export/home/husam/release/lib/libstorage_s.so.1:backend.c stab #530 host:(0,211),The key to your problem is probably the stabs reading error.
How was backend.c compiled?
Normally dbx will load stabs information on demand as needed.
You can start dbx and use the "module" command to load
the stabs information right away without running the program or using RTC.
Try this:
(dbx) module backend.o
Does that cause the stabs warnings?
If you can "repair" or "normalize" the stabs information in that module,
the crash will probably go away. -
Why dbx core dumps on input core file?
Hi,
We have a Solaris 10 machine, on which dbx always core dumps when input any core files to it. What would possibly wrong with this machine? Or where should we look to find some clues?
Thanks a lot,
pamPlease create a perl script using the text below:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use File::Find;
sub wanted {
return unless -x && -f;
return unless /.*\.so\.[0-9]$/;
return unless `/bin/file $_ | grep 64-bit`;
$out = `elfdump -e $_ | grep e_shoff`;
$out =~ m/e_shoff:\s+(0x[0-9a-f]+)\s/;
if ($1 =~ m/[4c]$/) {
print "bad alignment in file: $File::Find::name\n";
print "Looking for bad ELF section header table alignment in 64-bit files\n";
find(\&wanted, ( "/lib", "/usr/lib" ));Then, make it executable and run it (does not need root permissions):
any_user$ chmod +x check_library_alignment.pl
any_user$ ./check_library_alignment.pl
If the perl script reports mis-aligned libraries (elfsign modifies the alignment), this looks to be bug 6283299. If you are current on patches for Solaris as well as your SunStudio installation, you'll need to raise an SR requesting the fix. If you are not current on patches, you could start with SunStudio patches which was subsequently patched to address elfsign alignments.

Segment fault (Core dump)
Hi
when i run the following Pro*c file in Unix Environment im getting the SEGMENTATION FAULT(CORE DUMP) error. I used DBX to debug the code. I couldnt find out the proper reason for this error form the dbx output.
This is the output i got from DBX.
*signal SEGV (no mapping at the fault address) in _doprnt at 0xfb98736c*
*0xfb98736c: _doprnt+0x2798: stb %o0, [%o1]*
I did the showmemuse and show leaks, the output for this commands :
(dbx) showmemuse

To be precise:
- start dbx
$ dbx <your app>
- issue
(dbx) check -access
(dbx) run
and wait for dbx to stop and report suspicious memory access. -

Indecipherable core dump on Solaris x86_64
On a 64-bit Solaris x86 machine (SunOS tempest-solaris 5.10 Generic_141445-09 i86pc i386 i86pc Solaris), I have been running gcc 4.3.4 (configured for i686-pc-solaris2.10) without a hitch. Both dbx 7.8 and gdb 7.1 are able to read core dumps created from a simple "goodbye, cruel world" program (kind of like "hello world", but it dereferences NULL at the end) built with gcc -m64 -g. However, with a more complex program, neither gdb nor dbx are able to figure it out core dumps (though they can debug it just fine if I set a breakpoint in main and start the program in the debugger).
gdb's failure looks like this:

Spoke too soon. One of my tests generated a readable core file, but the rest are having the same issues as detailed above. I am examining the core dump on the machine that generated it. The sizes of the failed tests are 21,522,239 and 21,485,375 and 21,526,447, so I doubt its running into a limit. (The successful one was 27,942,207.)

Heap corruption in a single-threaded program can be caused by
- using an uninitialized or otherwise invalid pointer
- using an object after it has been deleted
- deleting an object twice
- storing beyond the bounds of an allocated object
In a multi-threaded program, additional sources of error are failing to guard a shared object by putting it in a critical region.
These kinds of errors are difficult to find after the fact, since the program crash usually occurs long after and in a different part of the program from the actual error.
Run the program under dbx RTC (real-time checking) to get diagnositcs about some of the errors I listed above. -
New / malloc / threads core dump
Hi,
I'm trying to port a ftp client from Linux to Solaris. The client runs fine on both Linux and on *BSD.
I'm using the Sun Studio 8 C++ compiler on Solaris 9 4/04 x86.
The program crashes in the below class function:
-- CUT --
FILELIST CServer::ObtainFilelist(bool use_jump) {
FILELIST fl_temp, fl_temp1 = NULL, fl_new, fl_start = NULL;
pthread_mutex_lock(&(this->filelist_lock));
fl_temp = this->actual_filelist;
while (fl_temp) {
fl_new = new(FILELIST);
fl_new->next = NULL;
fl_new->magic = fl_temp->magic;
fl_new->is_marked = FALSE;
fl_new->name = new(char[strlen(fl_temp->name) + 1]);
if (!fl_temp1)
fl_start = fl_new;
else
fl_temp1->next = fl_new;
fl_temp1 = fl_new;
fl_temp = fl_temp->next;
pthread_mutex_unlock(&(this->filelist_lock));
*use_jump = this->prefs.use_jump;
return (fl_start);
-- CUT --
When running the program in dbx I get:

I tried to replace the "fl_new->name = new(char[strlen(fl_temp->name) + 1]);" with "fl_new-name new char [255]" with success. fl_temp->name is accessible, I tried to output the contents before doing the new with success.
FILELIST is a struct and FILELIST.name is a char*.

Regards,
Martin AnderssonThe stack trace seems to show a core dump from malloc after being asked to allocate 5 bytes. (The operator new in the standard library calls malloc to allocate storage.)
If your code was compiled optimized and without -g, the stack trace is not always reliable, however.
But assuming the trace is accurate, the crash is probably due to a corrupted heap. An invalid free() or delete can corrupt the heap data structures, and the the crash occurs at at later time, often far removed from the offending location. "Invalid" means
- using the wrong form of delete
-deleting an address that was not provided by the matching new operator
-freeing an address that was not provided by malloc/calloc/realloc
-freeing or deletting the same block more than once
The heap (and anything else in the program) can also become corrupted by storing through an invalid pointer or an uninitialized pointer. "Invalid" means the object pointed to no longer exists.
The heap can also become corrupted if you store beyond the bounds of allocated storage.
The classic error is this:
char* p = new char[strlen(msg)]; // forgot about trailing null
strcpy(p, msg); // write one byte too many
If you can't see any of these errors in the souce code (and theyare hard to find), try running under dbx with RTC (run-time checking) enabled, or use some memory debugger. -
Hello All,
I am developing shared libraries for Solaris 5.8 using CC v5.4 (Sun Forte 7).
These libraries are integrated with application software built with CC v5.6 (Sun Studio 9) also on Solaris 5.8.
The libraries I supply are accessed via a defined C API by the application using "dlopen".
My libraries in turn depend on other, such as libxerces, libCstd and others.
I have verified that the software libraries work correctly when run in a test harness, whether this is compiled using CC v5.4 or CC v5.6.
The application experiences the following fault:
t@4 (l@4) terminated by signal SEGV (no mapping at the fault address)
0xfeec1c98: _smalloc+0x008c: ld [%o1 + 8], %o0
The business end of the stack trace is as follows:
[5] std::valarray<double>::valarray(
[4] __rwstd::_RW_array<double>::_initial_size(
[3] operator new(0x0, ...
[2] malloc(0x1, ...
[1] _smalloc(0x8, ...
I am looking for developers with similar experiences or knowledge of this problem to try and narrow down the possible causes.
I am currently investigating the following possibilities:
Compiler patch or use -xarch=v8plus.
Inconsistent use of "-DRW_MULTI_THREAD -mt" compiler/linker options.
Incompatibility between libCstd & libstlport.
I have already referred to the following forum entries.
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=850&threadID=5069618
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5071063
The code causing this core dump is in the initialisation section of the constructor of a C++ object.
class c {
public:
c(); // constructor
protected:
std:valarray m;
a::a()
// Initialisation.
: m(0) { <<<<<<<<<< The core dump occurs in the constructor of this valarray member variable.
// Constructor code.

Edited by: Geoff.Krechting on Apr 23, 2008 7:25 AMBoth C++ 5.4 and 5.6 are End Of Life, and little support is available for them. I recommend you upgrade to Sun Studio 11, the most recent compiler that still supports Solaris 8 (which is also End Of Life). Studio 11 is free for all uses, and rebuilding your code using it should not present any problems. You can get it here:
[http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/products/previous/11/index.jsp]
If you don't want to change compilers, you can still mix binary code from C++ 5.4 and 5.6. The rule is that you can link binaries created by an older compiler into a program or shared library built with a newer compiler, but not the other way around. That is, you need to use C++ 5.6 for all linking steps, not C++ 5.4.
The problem you are running into might be due to a compiler bug, a bug in the runtime library, or a bug in your code.
You can reduce the chances of compiler or library bugs by getting all the current patches for your compilers and libraries here:
[http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/patches/index.jsp]
Be sure to update the C++ runtime libraries not only on the computer where you build, but on computers where the application is run.
The crash you are seeing looks like it's due to memory corruption. Memory corruption can be caused by
- using an uninitialized pointer
- using an invalid pointer:
--- points to a deleted object
--- points to an object whose lifetime has ended
- deleting an object more than once
- mis-matched new/delete operations
Using Run-Time Checking in dbx can help you find some of these problems.
% dbx myprog
% check -all
% run -
Is there an way to get the value of a local string variable from core dump?
Hi All,
Please help me on this, How to extract the string variable content from the core file.
During core file analysis using dbx, it puts value as CLASS against string local variables.
But I need to know the exact value during the core dump.
I'm able to print other than string variables.
Is this possbile using dbx or is there any other tool can help me on this.

I got another instance of core dump in same m/c
Edited by: chittusun on Nov 5, 2008 5:19 AM -
Hi - We are currently using dbxml for many years successfully on CentOS and FreeBSD. Recently,we have been trying to get our dbxml application to run on Joyent's SmartOS platform.
Through the help of Joyent, we are able to build sbxml 2.5.16 binaries on smartos. Build ntes here:
https://github.com/joyent/smartos-live/issues/236
However, when we run the application, the java core dumps - both on jdk 7 and jdk 6. Same code runs find on other platforms. Core dump is included in the above post. Not sure if anyone here might have an idea on what is causing this.Hi Lauren,
Thanks for the response. Here is what I posted about this on the smartos forums. They helped me in getting dbxml to compile on smartos. Including using an xquilla patch:
OK, so the build problem you're having there appears to be an error in the C++ source for xqilla. This diff appears to fix that:
--- pristine/dbxml-2.5.16/xqilla/src/items/DatatypeFactoryTemplate.hpp 2009-01-07 11:46:13.000000000 +0000 +++ dbxml-2.5.16/xqilla/src/items/DatatypeFactoryTemplate.hpp 2013-07-11 08:17:00.638395661 +0000 @@ -79,7 +79,7 @@ AnyAtomicType::Ptr createInstance(const XMLCh* value, const DynamicContext* context) const { - return createInstanceNoCheck(DatatypeFactoryTemplate<TYPE>::getPrimitiveTypeURI(), + return this->createInstanceNoCheck(DatatypeFactoryTemplate<TYPE>::getPrimitiveTypeURI(), DatatypeFactoryTemplate<TYPE>::getPrimitiveTypeName(), value, context); }
Here is the post about the core dump:
Hi - OK, so apparently, the newly compiled code core dumps the JVM every time I try to call the openContainer method.
At first, I thought this was a code issue or a jdk 7 issue. However, I've compiled dbxml on smartos via the instructions in above thread using both jdk 6 and jdk 7 and I get the same core dump on the same call.
Also, tested the code on jdk 7 and jdk 6 on FreeBSD, Linux and Solaris and everything works OK.
I also thought it was a problem with my data, but I tried this create a fresh container using dbxml shell.
Same thing. So it seems to be a problem with the dbxml build specific to smartos.
Anyone have any ideas on where I can start looking for a solution?
