Core i5 27" game performance

Hey everyone,
Has anyone installed Windows Vista or 7 on the new iMac 27" with core i5 processor and played any games?
I'm thinking about buying this model and although games are not a huge deal for me (wouldn't make or break my buying decision), I would be interested to know how the games perform on such a big screen. Obviously the bigger the screen the more GPU memory you would need. This iMac comes with 512mb GPU, really 1GB would've been nice but you can't have it all
So if anyone has tried this can you let me know how it performed?
Thanks.

Well I can tell you, you won't have any problems at all. I have a MacBook Aluminum Unibody, with a 2 GHz processor, and Windows 7, and the games are amazingly fast on it.
So that iMac will be much much better...

  • Bad game performance, but, why?

I got my new computer yesterday. It's a macintosh 2ghz 20-inch iMac, with Memory of 512 mb ram and under the memory section in about this computer it says its running at 667mhz. I have 256mb ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card and 207.96 gb free in my macintosh HD.
I have been having really crappy game performance. THe only game I have is UT2004, but I can't play it at all with the graphics turned up, and while single player works once i put them down to average quality, but even at LOWEST quality multiplayer is really hiccupy. Why is this and can I fix it?

    Hi there,
here is the link to explain the memory you need to buy and how to fit it yourself....(Very easy to do, by the way)

  • BIOS flash resulting in bad game performance?

    Motherboard: K8N Neo2 Platinum
Yesterday I flashed my BIOS to version 1.C, because of problems when rebooting the computer from Windows (booting would get stuck at the Gigabit Boot Agent, until network cable was removed).  The flash was successful, however I noticed a great decrease in game performance after booting into Windows.  Games like WoW and F.E.A.R. Combat had their fps reduced to less then 30 fps, where 40-50 fps were not abnormal before the flash.
I talked to a few people about this and due to their advice I tried reinstalling the motherboard and graphics card drivers.  To no avail.  3DMark2001 benchmarks showed a score of 11000, where I got a score of 15000 when I tested my rig a few months ago.
This morning I completely formatted my Windows drive and reinstalled Windows, including all new drivers for motherboard, graphics card, you name it.  Still my 3DMark2001 score won't go beyond 11600.
I checked everything possible in BIOS and Windows:
    CPU settings are ok,
    memory settings are ok,
    harddisks are configured for UltraDMA5,
graphics card core and mem clocks are ok,
all possibly performance reducing services and programs are shut down.
I can't think of anything else reducing my computer's performance, but can't also think of the BIOS influencing this performance.
Image of new and old benchmark:
    http://www.sloefke.eu/f/benchmarks.jpg
Should I try reflashing the BIOS, and if so:
    a) to which version?
    b) is reinstalling of drivers really necessary?

I'm sure that you're using liveupdate?
    Nope.

tried to used the manual way to flashed it.
I flashed the BIOS manually, if that's what you're asking.

I've same mobo like yours and used Bios 1C from Syar's.  Refer to my sig in order to flashed it. ALso troed to reset your BIOS by removing the CMOS battery and leave it for 10-30 min make sure you've removed the power cord as well as power connectors and load all the default setting before you need to reflashed it again. Gd luck
I don't fully understand this part of your reply.  Should I first remove the battery and then reflash the BIOS?  What's the difference between removing the battery and resetting the BIOS with the JBAT jumper?
And what are the modifications of the Syar BIOS compared to the MSI 1.C BIOS?  Will it resolve my problem?

  • Does increasing ram improves game performance?

does increasing ram improves game performance of my MBP 13" 2012??

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Games performance on new iMac?

    Hi all!
I want to buy a mac, but!
My brother and I like to play games like Oblivion, Stalker, Steam-games and other. We're waiting for a new powerful Macs from Apple and here they are!
    Now, the questions:
    - could You tell me about game performance on a new iMac with ATI 2600Pro Video card using or not Boot Camp and WinXP?
Cuz, if the performance will be slow, then we should to buy a Mac Pro, which is a bit expensive
    Regards,
    Alex

The performance of the 2600pro card will not be sufficient to run the newest DX10 and latest DX9 games in the native screen resolution (which is 1080i aka 1920x1080).
So you will either need to play at a lower resolution (which will not look good) or buy a MacPro or PC form gaming.
Hmm not sure if your correct there tank. Acording to the ATI website it can. Now before someone says it I know that the info on there is for the pci express version but isn't it the same card inside the imac?
Edit: Sorry tank just noticed you said native screen res ... I can imagine it would strugle at that res.

  • Enhance game performance

    Hello,
I'm not sure where is the correct place to post this topic. I think I'm in the correct place.
    First, my system specifications:
    - MSI K9N4 SLI
    - MSI R4850 512 (A little oced)
    - AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600+ @2.5 (oced to 4800+)
    - Seagate 160 GB 8 MB cache
    - 2 GB RAM DDR2 667 @511
    - Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
The "problem" is the following: I'm playing Medal of Honor Airborne and Jericho, both in highest quality. The games performance in general terms is very quickly, the protagonist "walk" normal, no slowdowns, but when the game loaded for the first time I note a frame rate drop that some seconds later disappears and works as should. However when for example, I'm entering in new areas, a new frame per seconds drop is noted again.
Running FRAPS in MOH Airborne show a average FPS of 25 and I think it's low!
    So, two questions:
    1) This motherboard supports only x8 speed PCIE ports. Is this the reason for the FPS drop? Or this affect only a little?
    2) I'm going to buy more memory, two modules of 1 GB each one. The system will be equiped with 4 GB in total. Maybe the games performance are being affected by the memory because Vista needs to read hard disk paging file?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the replies.
What do you mean with sounds problems? The sound works well.
The PSU is CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 550 Watts.
I'm using Catalyst 8.7 final version. Unfortunately 8.8 doesn't work in my system even with my old card (x1550). When I load Windows CCC.exe close due to problems. Formating doesn't solve the problem so it's a bug from ATI. Maybe 8.9 will fix the issue as others users are having the same problem as me.
What can I do to enhance game performance?
I installed Alone in the Dark and it's playable, but when fire or explosions appear, a frame drop is noted
I'm playing this game in high quality too.

  • Simple game performance question

    Hi all!
Today I installed a simple Mah Jong game on my mothers Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz. The CPU performance should be roughly the same as on my iMac(as specified below). She uses a VGA display and has 1GB of RAM and this game doesn´t require very much RAM. How important is the graphics adapter for the performance of this very simple game with very little 3D effects as compared to the latest games on a pc? Do I get a speed boost because of 256 MB instead of 128 MB VRAM? Is it just Intel GMA 950 to blame for less performance or has it something to do with the VGA display?
I´m very curious about this. Thanks for your replies.

+is it just Intel GMA 950 to blame for less performance+
Probably. Integrated graphics can't match a dedicated graphics card.
Another possible contributor would be if the Mini with 1 Gig of RAM has a significant number of other memory-consuming programs running at the same time. This would be especially true if any of the programs invoke Rosetta emulation.
The 2 gig of RAM in the iMac would be a real advantage if it reduces virtual memory activity vis-a-vis the Mini with 1 Gig.
A fair test would be to make sure no other programs or widgets are running, and then test the game.

  • Game performance low on new iMac 24"

Hello, I just got my new 24" iMac with intel Core 2 Duo extreme at 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM and Radeon HD2600 pro 256MB. It self and system(Leopard) are both brand new. I haven't install any app but only World of Warcraft for Mac version yet.
But I find that my imac cannot do well on good video quality. The FPS ingame is only around 30 at low quality, and low as 3-6 at high quality. This cannot be if considering the hardwire my mac equipped.
How can I solve this issue? I have tried a few 3rd-party radeon video drivers but they didn't work.

I have experience with many systems being a tech support guy... but the reason your not seeing better performance is that the X1900 is actually a better card than the 2600. Don't let the higher numbers fool you. The 2600 is a low end card of the 2000 series whereas the 1900 is a high end card of the 1000 series.
A good chart for seeing how different cards stack up:
    http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=1066&model2=72 9&chart=286
The 1900 has a faster core clock(graphics processor speed) and memory clock (memory speed) compared to a 2600. Plus the 2600 has a pretty bad reputation as a weak card. Any ATI 2000 series card pretty much below a 2900 was a disappointment. Anyways, the best thing for you to do is turn resolution down, antialiasing/sampling down (off preferably for better performance) and tune the other settings to see which affect you the most so you can turn on as much eye candy as possible.
For all the wild sweats and bloody regrets,
None knew so well as I.

  • 17" imac looks and game performance

    Hi All,
Im thinking about getting a intel iMac for home, but Im not sure I can stretch to the 20" I remember thinking the 20" g5 imac was much better looking than the 17" because the area bellow the screen seemed more in proportion. Does the 17" intel look good in person?
Also, I want to use bootcamp to install windows on it for the odd game, but if I get the 17", I will only get the 128mb graphics card. How are you finding games on the 128mb? I want to play half life 2 episode 1, and batlefield 2, and would like them to play with the settings on medium if possible.

i forgot to mention that with Q4 you have to tell it that you have the core duo.i assume other games will be the same. even after asking for optimum settings i had to tell it i had the core duo.
then reboot. theres is a noticable difference. have gotten better settings but im upgrading thursday to 1 gig ram (getting another 512 chip) also going with a 250 gig external firewire hard drive( LaCie) thats what my local dealer has and they have not let me down yet. i love being able to drive 15min. if theres a problem. thursday morning i have an appointment to install ram and setup drive.should take 20min. i love my Local dealer. made my transfer to the Mac as painless as possible.
ill let you know friday what kind of difference i get with 1gig

  • Steam bad game performance

    Hello!
My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.
I've found this post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1284496 . There Svenstaro say "Your 32bit chain is completely broken..." how did he find it out? Is my 32bit chain is broken too?

  • Bad Game Performance on MacBook Pro Retina

I've been getting below average performance on my the 15" Retina (2012) with all sorts of games lately. I did the SMC Reset and nothing works. I tested it out on Bootcamp with Windows 8 and Windows 7 and the gaming performance seems to be lower than what it usually was.
I have a feeling it may be related to the Throttling done on my GPU, I tested it out on windows and it seems that my GPU Clock is usually running at around 500 to 725 it never reaches the 900MHz and the tempratures is always around 95 degrees.
    Any ideas ?

If you are serious about games, get a PC.  Macs are not good gaming platforms.
    Ciao.

  • Cars game performance patch not working

i have bought a cars game dvd for pc/mac and installed it on my intel 20" 2.66 Core2Duo iMac but after using the performance patch for universal binary downloaded from apple website and launching the application it asks for a playdisk whilst the DVD is inserted into the drive.
so what should I do to make it run on my intel based iMac?

    i got my problem solved...

  • 8 core Mac Pro - lacks performance under XP32

    Hi guys,
Have an 8 core 3GHz Mac pro with a Nvidia 7300GT video card, 4GB RAM etc..
Under XP32 (boot Camp) with the new Leopard update, I still only get 2GB RAM available, despite the /3GB switch made to boot.ini. Any ideas?
Also, my 7300LT video card exponentially outperforms the 7300GT in this Mac Pro under 3dMark. Been really quite disappointed. I have the latest Nvidia drivers, and have just finished the latest Leopard update, with absolutely no performance difference (makes me wonder why I bothered really).
So my ask is, people here.. what are your 3dmark scores like? Do i have a faulty board, drivers or setup? What am i doing wrong?
I have this machine mainly as a 3D modelling and rendering workstation, and while it renders like a monster, manipulating even simple wireframes in 3d Studio Max is chunky!
Any help/advice appreciated, as my Apple Dealer has wiped his hands clean of me.

You should have ordered it with Radeon X1900 or better video.
    Windows 64-bit version.
7300GT is not designed for 3D.
Radeon should be 400% higher 3DMark06 scores but you'll have to look those up.
Leopard didn't provide anything new for Windows drivers from what I've read.

  • Mac Pro late 2011 model Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 extremely slow performance

My Mac Pro early 2012 model has lately been very slow and spinning beachball is a common phenomenon now a days. Black Magic speed tester only shows 35 Write and 50 Read speed on my mac. Can anyone help me boost the performance of my machine?

  • 10.7 Game performance

After installing 10.7 the previous night, I find that WoW seems to have taken large performance hits.  WoW for exampe, is neting about a 100% loss in fps (in Orgimmar) on ultra settings.  Moving is sluggish, clunky, and comes with a delay.
I can't say if Team Fortress 2's performance is worse because of 10.7 or because of Valves recent update.  I do believe it may be a combination of both.
    Anyone else having similar symptoms?
I'm using an ATI 5870 HD, if that's relevant to anyone else.
I suppose I'll just have to go back to Snow leopard until Lion is a bit more polished.

I have a gaming performance issue, but I'm not sure if it is relevant to your case. After fresh start gaming perfomance is good, as it is supposed to be. But after I put computer to sleep and woken it up again FPS takes a huge hit. It seems that it becomes capped at 20 FPS regardless of 3D scene complexity. Relogging doesn't help. Computer restart does.
Tested on World of Warcraft and Prey. Both games have this huge performance drop after sleep. But in WoW the start screen animation plays smoothly in any case, which puzzles me.
I'm using Radeon 5770 on Mac Pro (early 2008).
