Core i7 iMacs become sluggish after 1-2 days of use.

Nobody seems to have this issue, but I'm on my replacement Core i7 and both machines suffer the symptom of becoming very sluggish after 1-2 days of use. I've checked activity monitor and my CPUs are practically idle, and I can quit all my apps and have gigs of ram available. But anything running is very sluggish after a few days being on. The only fix is to restart the computer.
When I say sluggish, I mean apps freeze randomly, switching between apps and even tabs within apps take seconds, and even tabbing between text fields is slow.
I'm really not sure what it could be. Anyone else suffer these symptoms? After a restart, my system is blazing fast. After about a day and a half, it's much slower than my macbook pro. I still don't know if this is a hardware or software issue.

Hi,
when I first bought the iMac i7, I though I would be amazed by the speed, but I wasn't at all.
I've tried to do fresh install, and after that, install apps one by one, new settings, etc, except my home folder which I imported. Not much changed.
In my opinion takes too much time to open iTunes or iPhoto, and I don't have libraries too large, just about 10 Gigs each... still, scrolling within these apps is not as smooth as I would expect.
Also, I've tried playing Dragon Age: Origins via Bootcamp and OSX, it works very goos within the first hour, but when it starts to heat up, it becomes very sluggish and the frame rate drops very significantly.
The heat, the heat is something very noticeable when running for a while, also is summer time in Spain right now, that doesn't help much, but still, comparing with my iMac CoreDuo (early 2006), it gets too warm and the difference in speed is not as you would expect from a widely claimed "beast".
Since this happens using Windows 7 or Snow Leopard, I do not think is a software issue, but hardware related.
will wait for winter to enjoy a better machine I guess..

  • IMac Display failing after 1 year of average use.

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac (the one with thunderbolt)  and the display is starting to fail after 1 year of average use (an hour of use every day on average).  The display is now much dimmer on the left half of the display (the GPU sits underneath that portion) and also flickers the whole display now and then to a lower brightness.
I am about 45 days out of warranty and basically will have to cough up $500 to have it fixed by Apple.  My questions are...  Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?  The genius bar employee thought that it was something he has seen happen to displays when exposed to heat over long periods of time.  So basically playing starcraft 2 and doing video encoding killed my display if you believe that to be the cause.
Are there any conditions in which apple would recognize this as a manufacturing defect and fix it free of charge?  Otherwise it looks like im writing a check for $500 next week.

Today a dark streak showed up on my display right in the middle. It is shaped like a zebra stripe but is dark grey and wont go away.
    I too have a mid 2011 27" 3.4GHz i7 iMac with a 2GB Graphics card . Im about 50 days out of warranty.
Seems like its perfect coincidence  for apple that 50 days after my warranty runs out, the most expensive thing to repair breaks.
After doing some research it seems like there is a lot of people with this model experiencing this problem.
Pretty sad that my 2005 iMac is holding up better than my brand new iMac.
Been saving up for it for like 4 years and I dont have the money to repair it.
I tried everything, I knew none of the stuff i tried would work but i still tried resetting the PRAM repairing disk permissions all that good stuff. I even have an air purifer/dehumidifier in my room so i dont know what caused it.
I didnt think i needed applcare because ive had my other imac since 2005  without a hiccup.
Ive rendered out 3d animations using the cpu at 100% for days and it still runs fine.
Havent even used my new imac for anything that would put stress on it.
What i do notice is that it runs hot all the time. ever since I got it. Sometimes just doing basic stuff such as browsing safari it can get so hot where i cant touch it. my GPU normally stays at around 70C and the hottest its been was 80C which is still safe. The alluminum is supposed to transfer heat better but all it does is retain heat more and get super hot. the old plastic one i have is 10x cooler.
What i did notice today tho when my screen problem happened, is that the GPU temperatue is at 50C and wont go above it. I monitor the temperature with istat  and never have seen it at 50C and below unless i am just doing a fresh boot.
What really concerns me tho is how the screen went out so close to when my warranty expired.

  • 27" iMac very sluggish after recent software/firmware update

I bought my 27" iMac (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM) maybe 6-7 months ago...and it has had NO problems. Even after updating to Lion. Smooth.
But after the most recent graphics firmware update (Feb 29) and software update (late Feb/ealry March 2012...can't remember exact date)...now my iMac is so sluggish! Running more than one application really makes my iMac run slow. And I'm not talking about Photoshop...I'm talking about Firefox, Safari, Mail, iTunes. Basic ones. Especially bad when I play video...very choppy.
Any clue what's going on? I ran Disk Utilitiy (all good, repaired permissions), Clean My Mac, CCleaner...all say good and healthy. So I am at a loss.
Any help would be greatly be appreciated. I'm still under warranty...but I don't think I need to bring it in do I?
    Thanks!

  • IPhone 3GS becomes sluggish after a few hours

    Hi,
have my 3GS since one month now (it's a week 31) and now experiencing the problem that after some hours of usage/standby the iPhone becomes slugglish. This means that i.e. after pressing the home button to wake it up from standby it takes the phone about five seconds to turn the screen on. Using the iPhone is much more slower as well. When putting the iPhone back to sleep mode it will again take about five seconds when waking it up the next time.
I can fix this by rebooting the phone and the system will stay fine for about 24 hours. Then the error comes back. Having this since two days now. There was no software installed or updated since then.
    Anyone experiencing similar issues?
    Thanks

Thanks. However, I have never done so in the past and did not experience the problem.
BTW: Maybe other users are having the same problem as well, just found his here on the board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147538&tstart=0
...and in another forum: http://modmyi.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/674171-home-button-lockscreen-delay .html
At least the ones from the other forum are having problems with connecting to wifi in those situations as well.

  • Songs not visible after a few days non-use

I've heard about this "problem" (i.e. apparent built-in functionality) of the iPod, but have just experienced it for the first time. I've not used my iPod for about a week and today when I went to turn it on none of my music was visible. I'm sure it is all still there because the space is being used on the disk (I can see that via Windows Explorer), but there is nothing to listen to. Someone told me in the past that the iPod hides all audio files as a form of theft protection or similar if it isn't used for a certain number of days. To me it is just annoying. If anyone could provide a fix (especially if it doesn't involve reformatting the drive), I'd appreciate it.
For bonus points: I'd like to ideally solve this without using iTunes. I very happily use Winamp with an iPod support plugin (http://mlipod.com/) to manage my music library and syncing with iTunes will completely mess up months of organizing. If anyone has a solution for this "no music" problem, I'm all ears.
    Thanks!
iPod 4th generation Windows XP Pro Using Winamp for library management

Update: iTunes could also not recognize the iPod even with the latest firmware installed. I had no choice but to do a restore to factory state, which wiped my hard drive clean and required me to spend about an hour restoring about 10GB of files. Thanks, Apple!
Although it seems this may have been a software/firmware problem with the iPod, I'm still interested in whether or not anyone has heard of songs being hidden after X days of iPod non-use. Is it just an urban legend or, in fact, true? Is there a way to deactivate such a stupid feature to avoid future calamties?
    Thanks!

  • How to disable my java application after a few days

I have a java application as a MyApplication.jar file. On clicking this .jar my application starts. I want to distribute this jar to my friends so that they can run the application and use it. However, I want my application to run only for a few days. The jar should become unusable after say 10 days and no one (including the people holding the jar) should be able to execute it.

...I want to distribute this jar to my friends so that they can run the application and use it. However, I want my application to run only for a few days. >Just a wild guess. You don't have many friends*, do you?
In any case, the usual way to approach this task is to write a key to the system that contains the first date the software was run, then check it each subsequent launch. If the 'first date' + 'allowable days' is before 'today', pop a message telling the user that the software has expired.
As to how/where to store this information..
You might use the Properties class to read/write the date property.
    Problems with this approach are
    a) Users adjusting their system clock to a previous date to get software to work again.
    b) Users finding and deleting the file containing the 'first date' property.
    c) Users leaving the software running for 173 consecutive days.
    d) * Users hating the software so much that they come and burn your house down.
( That last one is the real worry. ;)

  • InDesign6 doesn't recognize plugins after a day of use.

I am on OS X 7.5. I have reloaded InDesign6 several times. After about a day of use, it no longer recognizes some plugin's. Every time I open it, more are added to the list.
    Can anyone help?

I installed the product and went through the same errors with InDesign with the plugin's failing after working a day. I uninstalled it ALL. Ran the Cleaner. And reinstalled. Still ended up with the same errors after one day of InDesign working.

  • My external HD of 1TB is not being recognized by the iMac and when after a long waiting period it does, the whole computer becomes extremely slow. Do I need any particular add-on to make it workable?

My external HD of 1TB is not being recognized by the iMac and when after a long waiting period it does, the whole computer becomes extremely slow. Do I need any particular add-on to make it workable?
Before I updated to OS X Mavericks I was using another external disk that was getting disconnected ocasionally so I bought a new ADATA HD710 portable 1TB Drive and moved the files to it. This new drive which is supposed to be OS X Mavericks compatible takes minutes to show the files especially when opening second and third level folders which has made mu iMac unusable
    What should I do?

Your Mac should be able to recognize many different types of drives (including Windows-formatted drives) immediately for Reading, provided they are in good working condition and not damaged. There should be no need to transfer to a different type of drive.
If there is no recognition of this drive, see if it can be seen in Disk Utility.
If your aim is to transfer the data on it DO NOT use ERASE or PARTITION as these will completely erase all the information on the Drive.
If the drive is present while the Mac sleeps, it is likely to drop out and not be seen any longer, especially if it is a USB-powered drive.

  • Firefox becomes very sluggish after several hours of usage

In the past 2 weeks, after several hours of use, firefox becomes very sluggish. Cannot switch tabs easily. Cannot type emails easily, etc. If reboot computer, works fine at first, but again, after several hours, becomes sluggish again. This happens to both my computers which are on a network. A technician suggested a virus, but have not seen any virus messages. Use AVG 2013 virus software.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Brand-new, loaded i7 iMac is sluggish. What could be the problem?

My company just bought me a new 27-inch 2.93GHz Quad-Core i7 iMac. I have 16Gb RAM and a 2TB hard drive. Coming from an older G5 tower, i was extremely excited to get my new machine.
I've only had it one week and it's showing odd signs of slowdown. When trying to resize a window in InDesign CS5, it becomes very laggy. Also, when i do a simple image resize in InDesign, it lags pretty bad. Also, even while just using QuickLook on a 1mb image, I get a beachball.
After i noticed these and other little examples of slowdown, i downloaded GeekBench and closed out every program and ran the benchmark. The results was a paltry score of only 3650! Now, I know something is wrong! I have no idea if this is software or hardware. Adobe CS5 is pretty much the only thing that i've even put on the machine so far.
    Any ideas!!??

You probably have a bad hard drive. You can run Apple Hardware Test and hope it will pick up on it, but probably the best thing to do is take it to an AASP or Apple store where they can run the big boy tools like ASD on it.
If GeekBench gives a breakdown of each subsystem that can also help pin things down. If your HDD scores seem significantly lower than people with similar systems, or even older systems, then that points to your HDD being the problem.

  • ICal Sluggish after 10.4.5

After installing 10.4.5 iCal has become sluggish to the point of being unusable. I've tried combo installer, combo installer from a separate volume, cache cleaning, hair pulling, cursing, etc. Anyone got a clue what has happened?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.8 ghz

I have been fighting this issue with iCal for months now.
The biggest problem was pasting a copied event. It took up to 2 minutes to paste it! I tried everything everyone else recommended without any improvement. However I found that if I turned off most of my calendars and just used one with a relatively small number of entries it was much faster. I could paste in 2-3 seconds. In a large ccalendar it took about 10-20 seconds. It does seem to relate to the number of events currently active.
I also found that if you have the list view on at the bottom of the window it slows further.
So I finally decided to archive all of the data from prior years and then work with just recent stuff.
In doing this I also realized that if I have Birthdays imported from Address book that there is an event for every year from birth. This can really add up. My grandmother was born in 1910 and just for her there are 96 entries to date and they continue to 2008 as well!!
To further speed up when I work in a single calendar and am copying and pasting items I turn off the others which makes everything much faster.

  • Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on..

Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on my computer even though I set the brightness to the lowest before I shut it down.
I want to set the brightness to the lowest every time I turn on the computer automatically.
Is there anything I can do?

    Hi,
There seems to be a serious issue with screen brightness on the 24" iMac. About 6 days ago I bought a 24" iMac (2.66 Mhz model w/4 GB RAM + 640HD).
Out of the box it had Leopard 10.5.5 installed; there were several problems.
    1. Screen brightness was way too BRIGHT. Display preferences would not pull brightness down. At least not down far enough so that the screen could be viewed without extreme discomfort. Plus add insult to injury a reboot would reset the preferences to maximum brightness. NOTE: An upgrade to 10.6.1 did NOT fix the issue.
    2. Viewing a browser page via either Safari or Firefox (latest versions of each) was not good. A vertical scrolling would be jumpy and appear pixelated. Upgrade to 10.6.1 seemed to fix most of the issue in Safari, but Firefox was still not working properly. The issue appeared like a horizontal "ripple" in about the bottom 2/3 of the browser window. The effect did NOT extend outside of browser window. Changing screen resolutions did not work.
    3. Connecting a USB Logitech head set caused issues with Sound preferences.
If the head set was connected during startup the machine would recognize them as main sound. The internals speakers did NOT appear in the Sound preferences. as an optional choice. Removing USB headset and reboot would return the internal speakers to the Sound preferences. Plugging in headseat would work for a while. We could repeat and same problem would occur.
These are all in 10.6.1 - definate bugs.
Returned with the iMac to the Apple store. Bottom line, after nearly three hours; the Apple technician, and everyone could see what we were talking about.
Regarding the screen brightness. Nothing they could do about it. They stated that "not too many people have complained about it, to their knowledge." They stated that the electronics in the "florescent" panel could not be turned down the same way. TRANSLATION: The programers at Apple let this one slip past them. As a customer (software programmer & network analyst) I expected a bit more of an intelligent answer.
    However.
Examining the 20" model I noticed that we could turn down the screen brightness - at least to a level that my wife and I could live with. PLUS the settings remained after a restart. Something that was NOT happening with the 24" model.
So - we exchanged the 24" for a 20". Frankly we are a LOT happier. The Safari/Firefox issue is still carried over to the 20". However it is not nearly so noticable on the smaller screen.
Plus the USB headset did not cause the same Sound Preference issues.
So - Thanks for the speedy return/exchange of the iMac. But someone needs to look at this from the programming side of things.
