Core i7 processor, and considerations of RAM upgrade configurations

According to Intel, the Core i7 can access:
3 Channels of DDR3 1066 MHz memory...
and if this is true for Apple's new iMac 27 Quad cores, wouldn't it be most efficient to install RAM in sets of three (ie 3x4GB) = 12GB total; not sets of two (2x2MB + 2x4GB) = 12GB? And why doesn't the Apple Store offer those combinations of RAM configuration?
This affect my considerations for future purchase. If not then:
If and when Mac Pro go to Core i7, will this configuration of RAM (3x4GB) be applicable?

There are many models of Core i7. The Core i7-860 used in the iMac (late 2009) only uses dual channel memory access. So you will get the best access speeds if you install memory in match pairs such as 2x2GB and 4x2GB or 6x2GB or 2x4GB or 4x4GB. You can mix and match such as 2x2GB plus 2x4GB sticks. These will all be matched pairs and run at full speed.
Now a new innovation of the i5 and i7 processors with built-in memory management is that they can handle memory this is not in a matched pair without degrading the memory performance of memory that is in a matched pair. For example 2x2GB plus 1x4GB. In this example, the 2GB sticks will be accessed via dual channel and run at maximum speed; the single 4GB stick will only use single channel access and will hence run slower but it will still work.
The Mac Pro architecture uses triple channel access when memory is installed in threes. For example 6x2GB or 6x4GB. The system also supports 8x2GB and 8x4GB but in those configurations, with the current Xeon processor and chipset, the memory will all be accessed then in dual channel mode. If your system is begging for more memory, running with dual channel will possibly be faster than running triple channel on a smaller amount of memory. If you are not severely memory constrained, then running the triple channel configurations will be faster.

  • Recently, since upgrading to ver. 8.0.1, videos are extremely choppy, scrolling is choppy and loading pages is slug slow. I have a very fast quad core i7 processor and plenty of RAM & HD space.

Sometimes a video will start smooth but within moments it becomes very choppy and jumps from image to image. The browser itself does the same thing where it bogs down to a crawl and scrolling is also very choppy. Very frustrating. I have been using Firefox for years now since it first hit the scene, but until I upgraded to ver. 8 this did not happen.

As long as it meets the minimum technical specifications, although the more above the minimum you have, the better the experience.

  • I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and a 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory? Is it recommended to upgrade to Yosemite?

I've seen a lot of people reporting problems with older MacBooks once they're upgraded to Yosemite. Wanted to check if I am making a mistake by upgrading. Currently, I am running Mountain Lion and things are OK, but comparatively slower than when I first got the machine in mid-2010.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

  • I have a macbook pro 4GB Ram, 2GHz Intel Core 7 processor and all the time since few months ago is like running for 2 sec. and stuck for another 2 sec.

I already tried to fix it by opening just a few windows but is not that. And is killing me because anything I want to do is just like the machine responds now, now not, now yes, now not. Sometimes is ok, just like now but really isn't much time. I can't even watch a movie on itunes, not even in youtube, it lasts up to 3-4 minutes to load.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. • My computer has a 2.2 ghz Core 2 Duo and 4gb of ram Why can't I upgrade to OS Lion, Not cool

I know the year is 1997 but it was late 2007, But my hardware is more than capable of running Mountain Lion. I don't like the limitations because of the year. Not cool. There must be a way to fix this issue.

from Apple support, models that are compatible with Mountain Lion
A Mac that can run Mountain Lion
Your mac must be one of the following models:
        • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
        • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
        • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

  • Logic board and third party ram upgrade on Macbook

I bought a new macbook about a month ago and the only change i made to it was to install third party ram myself. The logic board broke on Friday. Apple was kind of enough to replace the logicboard for free even though I had third party ram in there which they said violated the warranty. I called other world computing where I bought the ram and they said there was no way the ram could be the cause of the logicboard failure even if I installed the ram wrong. Is this true?
My real question is what do I do now for upgrading my ram. Do I buy mac ram and pay the extra money or can I use third party ram and not have to worry about it causing damage to my system? Whatever the resolution I don't want to void the warranty in any way.

*"which they said violated the warranty."*
What they told you there is a load of crap. Installing RAM does not void the warranty. Even the RAM that Apple installs is from a third party.
*"can I use third party ram and not have to worry about it causing damage to my system?"*
    Yes

  • I have a macbook air with osx 10.6.8 and it has a 1.4 GHz intel core duo processor and 2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. I want to use icloud but am afraid buying the version of osx that is required will bog my computer speed down, or change the user inerface. I

I am not computer savy and like my macbook air because as a college student, and father that is very busy, I don't have to learn to re-use it every month after it crashes from a virus. Am I able to load the new version of osx that icloud requires onto this computer without changing it substantially or slowing it down?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • Flash won't install after downloading...early 2013 MBP/Retina, 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Ram, 3GHz Intel Core i7 Processor (clean installation)

Flash Player won’t install after downloading
On the first attempt to install v14, Flash Player v13 was installed and working fine.
I opened the installation package for the new Flash Player, followed standard protocol for installing Mac software and it hung before retrieving anything.
Subsequently, while watching the beach ball spin, I got an error message that the installer could not retrieve the v13 Flash Player software.
So I uninstalled Flash Player 13 and again attempted to install v14, only to see the spinning beach ball followed by a message that the installer could not retrieve the v14 Flash Player software.

  • Is it possible for me to upgrade from an intel core duo processor to an intel i5 core processor?, Is it possible for me to upgrade from an intel core duo processor to an intel i5 core processor?

Hey guys, please help me out. I am an owner of a MacBook Pro with software 10.6.8 and I have a 2 GHz intel core duo processor, and I was wondering, if it is possible for me to upgrade to an i5 intel core processor, so I can install mavericks to my MacBook Pro.

There is no way to plug in a different processor on your older MacBook. Processors have been soldered in for quite a long time.
The only known method is to convert your MacBook to Cash (by selling it) and use the cash to buy a MacBook that better meets your needs.
