Core i7 processors in the Ultra 24?

Does anyone know if Sun plans on coming out with something like an Ultra 24 M2 soon that would have these processors? They have been out for a while now so it would be nice to see these processors in a Sun workstation. Sadly, it seems they abandoned their AMD-line of workstations so we won't be able to get the new "Shanghai" processors on the Ultra 20 M2 so right now we are just limited to using Core 2 Duo/Quad processors. Am I the only one that feels that Sun has put their desktops to the wayside?

I agree that it appears that Sun has ditched its workstations. Mac just announced their new MacPro which uses two of the new core i7 processors. It is limited to 32 GB of RAM rather than 64 and it holds only 4 internal drives standard. Until this came out I was considering a Sun server with Sun Ray, but the workstation set-up would be easier. Would be nice if Sun would put together a real offering in their workstation line-up soon.

  • Does the new iPod touch with iOS5 come with the dual core A5 processor?

If the new iPhone 4s is able to pack a dual core A5 processor into the phone, shouldn't the iPod be able to? I wanna buy a new iPod cause mine crashes a lot but I'm not sure I want another one with just a single core processor...Did Apple announce anything at the keynote about this or something? I didn't watch it through cause it was long so I'm not sure what to expect. Thanks if you can answer it(:

From the information provided by Apple, the only differences between the new iPod Touch and the 4G released last year is the lower price and the addition of a white color.

  • What's the difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo

I recently bought a new Macbook (Original) with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
I gave my old one to my younger cousin. It has just an Intel Core Duo processor.
    What does that "2" mean?
Does it mean the processor is faster?
I was guessing it means that I can have more RAM (because this can hold 4 GB instead of 2 GB, like my previous Macbook)...
Both these Macbooks have only 1 GB of RAM, yet the new one seems MUCH faster. The only real difference in technical specs is the processor. Could the processor be responsible for the much faster computer, or is it simply because it's a new computer?
    Thanks!

Part of that has to do with the chipsets, although I've heard that some of the Intel chipsets work with both the Core Duo and the earlier Core 2 Duo.
The Core Duo is the dual-processor version of the Core processor.
The Core 2 Duo is the dual-processor version of the newer generation Core 2 processor.
The Core 2 series is more advanced. They likely are produced on faster semiconductor processes in smaller "geometries". I think part of it is a higher operating clock speed, but it could also include advances in processing power where it takes fewer average clock cycles to complete certain instructions. There could be things like more pipelines, faster/more arithmetic logic units, and other architectural improvements that makes it work faster overall even without clock-speed increases.

  • Core duo processor upgrade

Does anybody know if it is feasible to replace the 1.66GHz Intel core duo processor on the new Mac Mini with the 1.83GHz, 2.00GHz or 2.16GHz version?

I've managed to successfully upgrade my 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac mini to a 2GHz model, and so far it's been running fine. However, I don't recommend trying it unless you're prepared for the fact that you could be throwing the money for said Mac mini away.
The heatsink is held on by these horrid little clips, and right around a couple of the mounting holes is all kind of logic that you really don't want to go scratching up. It is VERY easy to damage this thing from the slightest slipup, and then you have to worry about things like putting in the correct amount of thermal paste, etc, etc. There's a very high possibility of damaging the system.
There's also the long term effects you have to consider. I'd wait a couple of months and watch crazy guys like me who rushed into it headfirst, and see what we have to say on the matter.
So.. technically possible? Yes. Feasible? Not sure. Risky? Extremely.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

From my personal experience, I wouldn't go for an Integrated card. This is one of the most important components for Photoshop, so invest in a decent graphics card (ATI or NVidia). It doesn't have to be a really exepensive one - I have been using ATI Radeon with 256MB of RAM on my Dell Studio for almost two years and it still rocks! (even when I work with 3D in Ps CS5 Extended).
I would also invest in more RAM (this can be added easily - I bought extra 4GB as my Studio came with 3GB).
I wouldn't worry about the processor - I'm on Intel Core 2 Duo - and it works very very well, it's very quick which is very important as I'm training Photoshop.
    I hope this helps.

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.
    Ciao.

  • Lion OS to ever support the older Intel Core Duo processors?

Does Apple Lion OS have any intention of supporting the older Intel Core Duo processors?  If not, then doesn't that mean there's a lot of Mac's that are going to be left behind?  Does Apple plan to do anything else for these Mac's?

Intel Core Duos are older machines - the last one was discontinued in September 2006 (if I remember correctly); that means the newest of them is about 5 1/2 years old - a lifetime for electronics.
As for Apple having any plans for these older machines: first, we are not allowed to speculate here, but I can't see anyone supporting or doing anything for a computer that age.

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

iOS 5 is for iDevices, not OS X. Your iDevice would only require 10.5.8 or later. If you have a Mac with a Core Duo processor then you cannot install Lion but you can install Snow Leopard provided you have at least 1 GB of RAM installed.

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

  • Anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, after guarantee period expiry the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs? CDs run

Can anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, ( just after guarantee period expiry) the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs?
CDs run without problem and until recently the DVD we have (all original no pirated copies) ran; we have used a CD cleaner disc to no avail.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate.

Exactly what model? Do you really mean the old MacBook with the dual core processor or do you mean one using a Core 2 Duo  processor?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
