Thanks!
Hi Leek Mibles;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
The reason your system is telling you it can do Core Image is because it doesn't have the hardware to support it. Since your system is a PowerBook, you are unable to upgade the graphic card because it is soldered in. So I am sorry to say that the only way for you to get Core Image is to upgrade your whole system.

Quartz Extreme not supported after 10.4.7 update
I recently updated to 10.4.7 and now quartz extreme is not supported.
How can I resolve this problem?
Mac Mini 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 512 Mb RAMHi Dr. Smoke.
Many thanks for offering some advice so quickly.
1. The reason I believe Quartz Extreme is " not supported" is mainly because when i turn my mac on and start using OS X, if I am in say DVD player or might use a widget the screen is very "choppy". Not sure if this is clear, but the motion is choppy. When I checked my system profiler it showed:
ATI Radeon 9200:

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
Rotation: Supported
Now, I just recently I decided to change my resolution and checked back with the system profiler and it said Quartz Extreme was supported. Core Image still says "Not supported".
Unless I manually change the res. everytime I use my mac it still keeps saying Quartz Extreme is not supported.
Can you tell me what is happening and is it fixable?
many thanks!

Suddenly Quartz Extreme Not Supported
Just got my new 20" iMac G5. was enjoying the RSS and iTunes artwork screensavers only this morning and now after migrating from my G5 1.6 they're gone and system profiler now says Quartz Extreme Not Supported. Zapped Pram all software updated and done a couple of re-starts.
Can't think what I've done (or not) to screw up this feature
Any help welcome
G,Ok update.... I followed directions here http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20081110225534811 and Quartz Extreme is supported on both now, but i'm still getting the ugly scan line.

I also have a AJA Kona LHe hooked up. Thanks.Pretty much from what I see, there is a conflict with the AJA drivers because every time I uninstall the AJA drivers then check the system profiler, both displays show that Quartz Extreme is supported. But once I install any version of the AJA drivers for Final Cut Studio 2 (5.1, 5.1 NDD, and 6) it will disable the support for Quartz Extreme for one of my displays. So the only thing I can do is hope there is a 6.1 or something that will take care of that issue. I read the update news for 6, and there was no fix for what causes this problem. Otherwise it would have said it fixed the problem that required them to make a NDD version of the last driver. I emailed AJA the other night about this, but haven't heard back from them. I hope they have a good reply.

Mac Mini: Quartz Extreme not supported?
I have a Mac mini (late 2008) 2.0Ghz with an Intel GMA950. MB139LL/A -- It says Quartz Extreme is not supported. Is that right? This machine is new and shipped with Leopard. Do the Mac minis really not support Quartz Extreme?
I'm not sure which "Samsung SyncMaster 940" you have, but it looks like the technology in that monitor may be about 5 years old.
My guess is that monitors that have been released more recently will have better support.
Personally, I like to buy monitors from stores with good return policies, because you never know what you might not like about a monitor until you try it. Depending on where you live, Costco can be a good place to buy monitors, as they have probably the best return policy in the business. (90 days on TVs, but no time limit on monitors -- the last time I checked.) -
GeForce4 MX Quartz Extreme not supported
My Geforce4 is supposed to be supported by QE. I did a install of tiger over panther and now nothing works. I can not install final cut 3.0. i ran all if the software updates from apple.
my machine is a DP 867 G4. I tried to hit esc when the QE error msg pops up but that does not work. Is there a solution to this. I don't know what else to do!!I experienced a similar grief, FCE 3.5 was working OK until I decided to lower some of the settings to see if my computer would work faster. When I tried to open FCE 3.5 the sign [ Graphic card does not meet the requirement of this software ] Finally I went into (About this Mac) >More info > Graphics/Display and saw Quartz Extreme: Not supported. I then went into System Preferences >Display and saw the setting: Colors was in Thousands. I changed it to Millions and Wallah!! every thing works as normal again.
Check your display and make sure the color is set to millions. I hope this helps.

Quartz Extreme not showing up on stock Mac Pro and card
I have purchased a new Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display from the Apple store last month. Safari Top Sites is not working and the "help" stated I need Quartz Extreme. Looked in the profile, but it is not listed in the list on the right at all. It is a stock apple card and display.
Is my monitor video card not even capable of using this feature or do I need to reinstall the system or something??

Connection Type: DisplayPortWith Snow Leo basically if you can't get quartz extreme you shouldn't be running 10.6.x
Easy way to tell if it is working though would be that your menu bar across the entire top of the screen is transparent, or if you add a widget to dashboard you will get the ripple effect. If you are on a system where Quartz Extreme is disabled you will not get those effects. -
Radeon 9600 Pro - Quartz Extreme not supported? Help!
I've just got a Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac edition, as the 9600XT that came with the G5 died on me last week. It's taken an age to get it working, I could only boot in safe mode, in the end I deleted all my existing ATI extensions, installed the ATI Displays 4.5.7 and it works. BUT ... (and it's a big but)... performance is VERY slow and System Profiler says Core Image and Quartz Extreme are not supported. If anyone's got any ideas I'd be most grateful.
Thanks. Richard.

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz (Late 2004) Mac OS X (10.4.10) 4.5 GB RAM
G4 CubeOK here's the latest. I did an Archive and Install (keeping my users home folders, though), and when the G5 restarted after the install it hung - the grey screen with apple appears, the little cog rotates under the apple, then that freezes and, although you can hear the hard drive working for a little while, it gets no further.
So I booted in safe mode, which works fine - ran the 10.4.10 combo updater, reset PRAM and NVRAM, same again - won't boot. Then I installed the ATI drivers from their website - same again. I can only boot in safe mode.
So i'm back where I was when I first installed the card - the only way I could boot other than in safe mode was to delete all the ATI extensions from /System, after that it booted but reported Quartz Extreme and Core Image not supported.
ATI support still haven't replied to phone calls and emails from Monday. So I' kind of at my wits end with this. Surely if I can boot in safe mode there can't be a hardware issue with the card, can there? Could there be something wrong with my AGP slot??
Any ideas gratefully received.

I am about to sell my computer and I wanted to check and make sure everything is working as it should. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 2x Intel 2.66ghz Dual Core, running OSX 10.6.8, ATI Radeon 1900XT.
Everything was working fine a few weeks ago. Now when I try to open just about any program, I get an error that says "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: ie Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
I have always been able to run FCP and all the programs that are giving me this error. I don't know exactly when I updated to OSX10.6.8, but I am almost certain I have been able to run FCP with OSX 10.6.8, I was running it about three weeks ago and the only thing that I know of that is different is that I updated photoshop.
I found this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12728219#12728219
Which suggests doing the Snow Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1083
I tried running it, but it says it only works with 10.6.4. (I am on 10.6.8).
I also looked to see if Quartz is enabled in the system profiler, but it doesn't even show that option:
Does anyone know what could possibly be happening or causing this? Getting a new GPU is not really an option since I am selling the thing.Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If your computer meets the minimum requirements, you can purchase and download OS X 10.7 'Lion' from the Mac App Store online. It is also available on a flash drive at about double the price of the download.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/
Specs, minimum hardware requirements, and upgrade paths for OS X 10.7 'Lion' are also listed here:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
Even though Lion runs in 2GB system RAM, 4GB or more is highly recommended.
Also be aware that Apple recently announced the next version of OS X, 10.8, called 'Mountain Lion', but no firm date for availability, other than 'coming this summer.'

FCS Compressor issues - Quartz Extreme not loading on headless XServe
Hi,
I am running FCS on a OS X Leopard Server Intel XServe...installed a Quartz Extreme GPU (an old stock nVidia 7300 taken from a Mac Pro) to meet the specs. Everything worked fine. However I want to run the system headless - it is an XServe in a rack! Only problem is that without a monitor attached to the GPU, the XServe fails to acknowledge the existence of the GPU. Quartz Extreme does not load. Compressor will not launch if opened (explaining that I have no GPU!) and the automatic encodes from FCS come out as 0Mbyte .mov files. I admit I already knew about the issue of Final Cut Studio apps not running on a headless machine, even with a GPU installed. I just assumed Apple must have fixed this one for FCS because it is server software....I am guessing plenty of people must actually run FCS on headless machines....what's the trick to getting encoding to work?
Thanks!
DanielDepending on your xServe, you can just stick the dongle in the back and it should activate Quartz Extreme. You shouldn't have to install another graphics card. If you have an older xserve, you may have to hook up a monitor to the dongle.

Quartz Extreme Graphics Card Support FCE 3.5
Newbie so bear with me...
I have a Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 so I went with FCE 3.5 thinking I had all the minimum requirements as advertised. When I went to install it did not highlight for install. I checked the more detailed requirements in the package and the only thing I'm lacking was the "AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card". In the System Profiler under graphics/displays I have:

As you can see it says Quartz Extreme not supported for the Viewsonic 19" monitor that I currently have. Wondering if there is a way around this. Just bought new HD camera setup/new os/fce so I would like to not spend more money on a new monitor. Let me know, thanks in advance!
-NickHi Tom,
There is no actual error message displayed - the Final Cut Express HD is not highlighted under Custom Install as shown in the screencapture below:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/nstatom/fcpinstall.jpg
The manual claims that if something is not highlighted it does not meet the minimum requirements and the only thing I do not meet is the video card. Any ideas? Thanks again in advance. -

My old GFX card nVidia GeForce 7300GT which is busted.
I replaced it with a nVidia NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 from a Mac Pro of the same generation.
I'm now getting a Quartz Extreme error whenever I try to run Final Cut Pro 6 or Compressor. "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Pro 6 requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
Well, I checked the specs of the card and it does support Quartz Extreme. So why isn't FCP 6 running?
Looking under the System Profiler > Graphics/Displays, it doesn't say the Cinema HD Display supports Quartz Extreme, but how could that be, because the Quadro 4500's specs online says it does?!! This was the better GFX card made for the same generation of Mac Pro but somehow doesn't work!
This is also effecting my DVD player App with an error: "A valid video device could not be found for playback: -70017". Which has never happened before either.
I've researched online and can't find anything that works.
The card has power running to it and the monitor is hooked into the closest DVI port to the logic board which most of people with the same problem have done to fix this. I've also gone into the Disk Utility and ran both Verify and Repair permissions and the same for the boot disk.
Nothing. I'm stumped. Short of trying to flash the ROM on the GFX card I'm not sure what to do. And I'm not comfortable doing that. Help please?
I'm using Final Cut Pro 6 and subsequent older versions of Motion and Compressor, not FCP X or companion series.

Quartz Extreme Support on Mini
Does the Mac Mini (Late 2009) support Quartz Extreme that is needed for iMovie? I have my mini connected to my LCD TV via HDMI and I keep getting this error when I fire up iMovie.
That is a particularly fine winter gift- congrats on that! Try hooking up the mini to that and let us know what happens.
You can verify if the display is Quartz Extreme Compatable by clicking on About this mac, and then looking under the displays setting. For example, my current TV is a Sony Bravia from about 2 years ago, and with my mini connected to it, Quartz Extreme shows as Enabled in my mac settings

Quartz Extreme: Supported
After reading this page:
http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/hottips/
I see that the Quartz Composer effects are supported only for Core Image supported video cards. I think that means I'm out of luck. It seems odd that the effects still attempt to render and be applied even if my system doesn't support them. Is something wrong with my installation, or is this expected behavior?
I've seen statements here on the discussions that Quartz Extreme should enable effects like the ripple when opening or closing Dashboard Widgets. My card does support Quartz Extreme but I do not see the ripples. I'm guessing that it's actually Core Image that produces those effects and that's why I don't see them. Is that a correct guess?
I guess I'm confused over the difference between Quartz Extreme and Core Image.
Thanks for clearing up my confusion...Quartz Extreme, as I understand it, is used by OS X for drawing windows
That is true. Quartz Extreme is a special, hardware accelerated instance of Quartz. Quartz is OS X's native drawing environment. When Quartz Extreme is not supported, Quartz will be used instead.
Quartz Composer is something else that builds on Quartz. It appears it requires Core Image. Core Image is a set of graphics routines that allow image manipulation (if you have the developer package installed, you can also find an application called 'Quartz Composer' that you can use to define effects, screensavers etc).
Core Image also intents to leverage your GPU. Apple's Documentation alleges that if there is no GPU available it will use the CPU instead. Theoretically, your Mac should support Core Image. Yet...
From Dennis' System specs:
Core Image: Not Supported
This may be the reason why you can't use these effects in iMovie. Because of shortcomings in iMovie's plug-in API, the plug-ins may still show up in the f/x panel - they simply will not function when selected.
Perhaps a later version of OS X enables CoreImage on all Macs?
Hope this helps,
-ch
