Core Image?

Hey, I've recently switched to mac after being disappointed with my old pc. So far it's been great and I'm thoroughly happy. I'm interested in graphics and use Photoshop, Image Ready and iPhoto. So to increase my graphics options I decided to use Core Imgage that I have heard and read about, however, a Spotlight search shows that I don't have it. So I'm wondering does Core Image come with 10.4.7? Or has something gone pear-shaped and for some reason i don't have it for whatever reason. If so, is there a place I can download it, as I've not seen anything on the Apple site.
Thanks for any replies.

Mac OS X 10.4: Requirements for Quartz Extreme and Core Image graphics
If you're wondering what the video requirements are for Quartz Extreme and Core Image in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, find out in this informative document.
Note: Quartz Extreme and Core Image are impressive video enhancements in Tiger that appear on fast Macs. But even if you have an older computer that can't use Quartz Extreme or Core Image, it can still run Tiger if it meets the system requirements. If you have a third-party video card installed, contact the card manufacturer to determine if it is Tiger-compatible.
Quartz Extreme
Some appealing graphics effects, such as the "rotating cube" effect you see when using Fast User Switching to switch users, are powered by Quartz Extreme. Quartz Extreme uses OpenGL and a supported graphics card to reduce the number of onscreen calculations being performed by the CPU. To take advantage of Quartz Extreme, you need one of the following graphics cards:
ATI: Any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU, with 16 MB VRAM or better.
NVIDIA: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX or later, with 16 MB VRAM or better.
Core Image
Other graphics effects and optimizations in Tiger, such as the ripple effect that shows when you place a widget on Dashboard, are driven by Core Image. When a programmable GPU is present, Core Image uses the graphics card for image processing operations, freeing the CPU for other tasks. To take advantage of Core Image, you need one of the following graphics cards:
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Radeon 9550, 9650, 9600, 9600 XT, 9800 XT, X800 XT
nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL
If you have a different card, contact the manufacturer for Core Image compatibility information.
Verifying compatibility with System Profiler
With Mac OS X 10.4, you can use System Profiler to make sure your computer's GPU supports Quartz Extreme or Core Image.
Open System Profiler (it's in /Applications/Utilities, or, if started from the Tiger install disc, open it from the Utilities menu).
Click "Graphics/Displays" under Contents.
In the right pane under "Display," look for the Quartz Extreme and Core Image lines; next to each, you will see either "Supported" or "Not Supported."

  • Core Image Question New ATI 9800 in QS 2x1ghz

I just installed a Radeon 9800 Mac Edition (128MB) in my Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1ghz w/ 1.5 GB RAM running Leopard.
I downloaded and installed the latest version of ATI Displays (4.5.7).
In System Profiler, under Core Image, it says, "Hardware Accelerated" instead of "Supported" like I expected it to say.
I do have two CRT monitors connected to the card, but it says the same thing if I only have the main connected.
    Profiler says this:
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R350
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 128 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A0750A-201
    Displays:
    VGA Display:
    Resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    CPD-G420S:
    Resolution: 1152 x 870 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
Should I be concerned about this? Is there a way to change it to "Supported"? Is there something obvious I'm missing?
    Thanks!

When I installed Leopard on my Quicksilver I noticed the wording went from Supported to Hardware Accelerated for my Radeon 9600.
From what I've read about Core Image in the past, if a programmable GPU isn't available, AltiVec may be used. The following link contains some additional information:
    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10-4.ars/15
I'm wondering if the wording has been changed to reflect whether it's performed by the GPU or not. It would be interesting to see what's shown for graphics cards that don't support Core Image.

  • Core Image Cards for Powermac G4 Dual MDD FW800

Hello there Gentlemen, currently running my Dual G4 with a ATI Pro Radeon 9000. This card does NOT Support Core Image. i need however ADC for
my flat panel from Apple 20". So what are my choices to get a card
that does core image and will drive my Cinema display?
    cheers
    sir double null

    Hey null,
looks like we have close to the same machine. I have the 9000 card in my machine also and recently purchased the ATI 9800 which is supposed to be a great card. Unfortunately, it isn't working for me yet. I don't know if the problem is just my computer or something else. I have an open thread just two below yours:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=264933&tstart=0
Here's the link for graphics cards that support core image..
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301347
I don't see the 9800 listed in this list? But I could have sworn it was on the list a couple months ago, at least the 9800 was in order to run Motion. It's so completely frustrating.
Post back if you get a video card working and what it is.

I've upgraded my G4 AGP with a Radeon 9800 pro. It seems to be a driver issue or a Core Image bug. After talking with an expert from Strange Dogs, it could be a driver issue concerning especially the G4 AGP and the 9800 pro. Does some one know something about this problem ?

Hey, what os version are You using ?
It's possible that it's hard drive but also its possible that is just ram.
Get same software for disk test and check whats the time for accesing data.
Also you might check ram, easest way is to open any file document and just copy any text with cmd+c cmd+v
to the moment the ram would be almoust full then remove all text. if it crashes then it seems that its ram

  • Core Image Fun House - STILL doesn't work!

    Hello,
I have been trying to get Core Image Fun House to work on my G5, and I have only able to get it to work once or twice, even my own custom-compiled version.
I use Fast User Switching on my machine, and it appears that once you have used FUS once after a boot, you never get CIFH to work again. The program loads, but no effects work.
I thought by 10.4.6, Apple might have fixed this, but no dice.
Evidence of a problem is always in console.log, and it looks like this:
2006-04-04 17:38:43.015 Core Image Fun House[2378] CIGlassDistortion: glassDistort: nil value for argument #0 (tex0)
    Can anyone else corroborate?
Thanks, because I am getting tired of this and really want to program with Core Image....
    Drew

I just tried it for the first time (amusing program!), and it works OK with fast user switching for me. I had it running under two users, one an admin user, the other a normal user, switched back and forth a couple times, worked under both worlds. Quit the program and restarted, kept working.

  • GeForce 8800 Core Image issues finally worked out?

Getting ready to order a new Mac Pro, and deciding between the Radeon 2600 and GeForce 8800 I have been reading that for games the 8800 is smoking fast - but for normal work in Aperture/etc it's actuall slower than the Radeon. Also saw some people reporting issues playing back HD video on the 8800...
Have these issues finally been worked out? Is the 8800 working well for HD video, moving windows around without stuttering, core image, etc...??
Thanks in advance for the replies...

I'm quite sure the 8800 will do well as a gaming card under windows. But if you use the computer mainly for CS3, Aperture etc, then I think you should go for the cheaper 2600 and then upgrade.
Barefeats has recently tested the ATi 4870x2 and the GTS280 under Vista and the former is significantly stronger. http://www.barefeats.com/harper19.html.
Note that in that article it is said that ATi "has optimized their Mac Edition drivers and firmware for the Radeon 2600 XT and 3870 so that they run Core Image effects much faster than comparable nVidia cards including the GeForce 8800 GT and Quadro FX 5600." This was news to me but perhaps it answers your question in part at least.
I have not seen any solutions for the HD video playback issue. I'm using the 8800 but don't do HD so I have no personal experience of that.
Btw note Barefeats finding that a 2,8 Mac Pro is as strong as a 3,2 Mac Pro for graphics work.

    Hi Leek Mibles;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
The reason your system is telling you it can do Core Image is because it doesn't have the hardware to support it. Since your system is a PowerBook, you are unable to upgade the graphic card because it is soldered in. So I am sorry to say that the only way for you to get Core Image is to upgrade your whole system.

  • Core Image Question

In System Profiler, it says Core Image: Hardware Accelerated.
Could someone enlighten me as to the difference between "Hardware Accelerated" and "Supported"?

    UMRebel,
"Supported" means that the graphics card (or chip) is able to display images generated via Core Image. "Hardware Accelerated" means that the card is able to actually execute the Core Image instructions, taking that much load off the CPU.

  • Can't Find Core Image on Computer

I have installed Developer on my harddrive, gone to applications and find Core Audio and Core Foundation but I can't find Core Image at all. I'm wanting to experiment with it's editing features on digital images.
I have Tiger 10.4.6 and I assume I had the correct version of Developer Tools.
    Need some advice.
    Bill

Core Image is part of Quartz. It's a collection of programming APIs, not a separate application.
However, my Dev Tools installation includes a pre-built sample app called "Core Image Fun House" found in "Developer -> Applications -> Graphics Tools". There area also several Core Image example programs found in "Developer -> Examples -> Quartz -> Core Image".
If you're interested in examining the Core Image header files they can be found in "System -> Library -> Frameworks -> QuartzCore.framework -> Headers".
You might also want to experiment with "Quartz Composer" (also found in "Developer -> Applications -> Graphics Tools".
Reference documentation for all this stuff should have been installed with your copy of Xcode Tools (current version is 2.3).

  • What is a "Core Image-capable video card" ?

Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro recommends in its System requirements that a core image-capable video card be used. I don’t know what this means, nor do I know whether my iMac has this video card.
I checked the System Profiler for my aging 2005 iMacG5 PPC and under Hardware / Graphics/Displays, my iMac has an ATI Radeon X600 XT. Under the Displays description, there is a “Core Image: Hardware Accelerated” feature. I don’t know how important the recommended video card is, nor whether my existing card would meet Roxio’s recommended system requirements.
I picked the Final Cut Express HD Forum to post this question; if there is a better Forum, please advise.
I want to purchase this Roxio software so that I can burn Blu-Ray discs of 1080i video footage downloaded from my Canon Vixia HV30 into Final Cut Express 3.5. After video editing in FCE, I want to export into Toast 10 because iDVD will not produce hi-def DVD’s.
I’m sure there are some experts out there who know whether my video card is sufficient for what I want to do, and may have other comments/suggestions about my hardware and its ability to work with Toast 10 and meet Blu-Ray objectives.
    Thanks in Advance
    BoBo

    Alchroma,
Thank You for responding to my question; that was a very good reference.
I think I'll be OK with my old iMacG5PPC to handle the requirements of Toast 10 BluRay.

  • Macbook and Core Image

    Will GMA950 handle Core Image?

According to this Apple page "Core Animation takes advantage of the multiple cores in most new Intel-based Macs. When developers use the framework for an application, the process runs in its own thread. On a multi-core Mac, this means the application runs on one core, and Core Animation on the other. Core Animation runs on any Core Image-capable Mac (including most Macs shipped in the past two years)."

I have read some of the comments about graphics cards on various threads, but what I'm after is the cheapest card which supports Core Image and will run on my dual G4 MDD.

    William Donelson wrote:
    Thanks, Allen.
Is that really the cheapest at $180 ?
Well that's the cheapest card retail card currently available on the market. The other retail card available is the ATI Radeon 9800.
If you don't go retail, then your choices divide basically between:
    1. OEM Apple cards that can work unmodified in an MDD
    2. OEM Apple cards that can be modified to work
    3. Flashed/modified PC cards
    I'll take them in turn.
*1. OEM Apple cards that can work unmodified in an MDD*
I think the only OEM card that supports Core Image specifically designed for the MDD is BTO (build-to-order) ATI Radeon 9700. It wasn't available for long as an option, is rare, and is pretty price.
*2. OEM Apple cards that can be modified to work*
These are typically 8x AGP cards for the G5 that can be modified fairly easily (if you don't need to drive an ADC monitor) to work in the MDD. The cards I've seen people try this with are the ATI 96x0 OEM Apple cards: 9600 Pro, 9600 XT. I think the 9650 may work as well, but I haven't read anything.
The modification to work (without ADC power) can be done easily with tape. See here. The ADC port works (provide video signal) with DVI and VGA monitors (with the appropriate inpensive adapters). It's just that to use the ADC port with an ADC monitor (to supply) power the modification is more involved -- see the above linked page.
For awhile OWC sold the 9600 Pro pre-modified. That used to be the cheapest route to Core Image with an OEM Apple card. I use an 9600 Pro, but didn't get it from OWC.
You can at times find these OEM 96x0 on eBAY both modified and unmodified for an MDD. If you want an OEM card make sure it's OEM -- they have DVI plus ADC, with the ADC being the dead-giveaway.
    *3. Flashed/modified PC cards*
Some people do this themselves, some people do it and sell them eBay. Some sellers are better than others, some cards are better than others. Some modify the cards with bigger ROM chips because the Apple ROM are typically bigger than the typical PC cards. If they don't swap the chip, they may be using a hacked smaller ROM.
For Cubes, this route sometimes is the easiest, and coolest way to go.

  • Hello , need more core image filters

Hey folks first post here, but would like to say thanks to all for the great info -you folks put this noob at ease . I need an app or plug in that can do lightning fx, im using gimpshop and am told that photoshop plugs work with gimpshop ? Well i have to say gimpshop is great and free wich blows me away ,now i know i need to up my ram all the way but it seems to be the only image editor that does not over tax the ram !!! I have 1GB ram and have used live quarts -image trix and even the core image funhouse thats bundled in the developers tools -and they all seem to eat ram fast .A layer or two and filter next thing i know it slows down or wont respond , and i look in the console logs i keep geting these wormy v-ram message any idea what the **** that is ?
core duo 17'' in   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB ram

This is incorrect. There are in fact more filters in FCE4 than in earlier versions. I notice that you have a G4. If this is the computer you're using many of the newer filter will not work with that machine unless you have an upgraded graphics card, though I'm not sure you can get one that will do it for that. That might be one reason you appear to see fewer filters, but all the old filters should be there are well, except for a one or maybe two that were removed because they never worked properly.
