Core install

First Question:
I've installed Solaris 8 for IA using the 1/01 media doing the core install, and adding some of the SUNW* packages that I thought might be necessary using the Web installer (though I was not using the windows GUI to do it, but rather the basic command line options). I don't have any CDE software installed.
While I can make do without (I have other Solaris machines with more robust installs that I can refer to) I'm not getting the man pages to work even though I have both SUNWman and SUNWdoc (which is described as: utilities and fonts for development, display, and production of documentation such as manual pages (nroff/troff)).
When I do a
% man userdel
as just one example, I get:
Reformatting page. Please Wait...Invalid SGML. File cannot be formatted
sys(cd /usr/share/man; /usr/lib/sgml/sgml2roff /usr/share/man/sman1m/userdel.1m > /tmp/sman_456) fail!
aborted (sorry)
So my first question is, does anyone know of an additional package that needs to be installed? I have all listed dependencies installed for both SUNWdoc and SUNWman
Second Question:
Another thing I noticed is that some commands that I'd like are not on the system. For example,
% vipw
isn't on the system. Again, I can make do, because I have "useradd"/"usermod"/"userdel" available (and maybe that's all I really need). That's just an example.
So my second question is, is there a way to go about finding what package has, for example, "vipw"?

  • Core install - no man pages & can not eject cdrom solaris 10

I did a custom core install for solaris 10. I thought I installed all the packages needed, as well as all the dependacies.
    I have no man pages!
I can not eject cdrom, I get an error:
    "No such file or directory"
When I type vold I also get an error:
"fatal: vol-init failed (cant communicate with kernel)
I can not start in services by:
    svcadm enable vold
    How do I fix?

I have fixed the vol_init error
    touch /reconfigure;init 6
What cd is the man pages on for solaris 10
would it just be pkgadd -d /yada/yada...

  • Does the core install media include wireless drivers?

I was originally planning on doing a net install but that would require me to hook up to a wired connection, does the core install media include wireless drivers so I can connect via wireless? I use an intel wireless card that was supported out of the box on my previous arch install, no ndiswrapper or anything like that needed. Thanks in advance.

Firmware for all cards are not available though due to silly licensing.

  • How can i get temp and such on core install

I know this has been asked a million times but i can't find an answer (maybe i am just that noob). I am trying to get the temp and fan speeds etc from the computer running windows server 2012 r2 core. here are the specs of my computer:
    mobo - ASUS M5A99FX pro r2
    CPU - AMD 8320
    RAM - 16G
The mobo comes with AI Suite which shows me this info but i can't install it on a core OS. It will also allow for tweaking of the settings. I would like like to be able to watch what is happening in the box as far as temps and such. I manage the server with
either windows 8.1 or windows 10 but i see nothing on how to get this info. Any help would be great but i really need it to be a free solution. Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

For you to be able to do that from a Microsoft-only solution, the manufacturer has to expose that information, most likely via WMI.  The fact that ASUS has a program to show the information may imply that they have not exposed it.  A quick way
to check is to go to a PowerShell window running as administrator and issue this PowerShell cmdlet.
    gwmi MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature -Namespace "root/wmi"
If that returns an error, it could be that ASUS has not exposed it.  So, that means you need to contact ASUS to ask them to see if they have exposed it via WMI.  If so, may they expose it differently, so get the details from them as to how to access
it via WMI.  If they have not, then you would have to rely on their program, which from your description, does not work on core installations.

  • Ndiswrapper and core install

I am trying to get one of my old computers running with Arch, and have been having some issues.
I have been trying to use ndiswrapper to use my Trendnet TEW423PI wireless card.  There should be no problems with that, as I have used it in the past with other computers and ndiswrapper and it worked perfect.
I installed all the packages on the core CD (base, base-devel), which I downloaded yesterday.  Then I downloaded the ndiswrapper package and moved it to the computer, but when I tried to install it, it complained that it requires kernel 2.6-36 or newer, whereas the CD installed 2.6.33.  I tried installing it with the --nodeps option and it still doesnt work.  It installs, but with a "line 4: ndiswrapper command not found" error before it finishes. There is no ndiswrapper in /bin or /usr/bin or anywhere else it ought to be.
I downloaded the source files and compiled it myself with makepkg, and it gives the exact same error when I try to install.
I want to avoid, if at all possible, upgrading the kernel because the computer has no internet, and moving all the required files there manually would be a headache.  I just need to get this installed once, so I can get the wireless connection running and upgrade, then I should have no issues whatsoever.
    What should I do now?
-- I think this would be the right forum for this, if it isnt and someone wants to move it to installation or networking or wherever, feel free.  But it seemed more like an upgrade issue than anything else.
    Thanks

Use a cable and -Syu, or download the packages on another box and move them over using a usb stick or similar? Or install from archboot which has .36?

  • Ds5.1 on Solaris 8 core install and SNMP

On a Solaris 8 core installation with the Directory Server 5.1,

What Solaris 8 packages are required to handle SNMP properly

  • 10.4.7 Intel Core install to G4 10.3.9

    Hello,
There is no such thing. Either it is an Intel or it
is a G5... they are completely different things.
That is partially Apple's fault there.
They chose not to make it distinctive. And, with the massive ad campaign for the iMac G5, they have successfully encoded that design into people's heads as a iMac G5.
To many, it would appear as thought the design is the iMac G5 and the processor is the CoreDuo.
By deliberately continuing the same design, and trying to make the transition invisible to the ordinary consumer, they kind of helped to create this confusion.
It's easy for someone who is not following all the technical papers and discussions to get the two mixed-up. Afterall, Apple wants you to see it as the same computer with a different processor, and that's how people see it. The same computer, different processor. Not everyone knew that it was called the iMac G5 because it had a G5 processor.
People who buy a home computer without comparing all the specs and such (the home user who just wants a machine) would see more distinction in appearances than names.
Cindi isn't the first one to make that mistake. So, it's obvious that Apple's strategy is working very well.
But, in general, we who know the machines can discern what is obviously meant by the question.

It is clean, but you could always lock down access to apex and HR schemas.

  • Use of graphics card with core install

    Hi,
We have a sun sparc server that has the solaris core installation. We run our Jrun application server on this machine. We would like to use a mapping software called Mapxtreme that needs a graphics card on the server. Can I use a graphics card without upgrading the core Solaris OS installation.
    Thanks,
    Sreeni

Well first the limit for the device is 1GB SD Card.
You can store music, videos, pictures, documents (word files, books and pdf files to name a few) and programs.

  • MMC missing on Hyper-V Core install

I'm trying to import a certificate on my primary hyper-v server.
Part of the process is running 'mmc' from the command prompt on the server.
When I RDP onto the Hyper-V server and run mmc from the command prompt it cannot be found.
I looked in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and sure enough mmc.exe is _not_ there.
Going back to Server Tools on my Win81 PC under the Tools menu there is a Certificate Authority option but when I click that I get a "cannot manage Active Directory Certificate Services" error - which I'm not surprised by since I haven't installed
    AD.
So in a workgroup environment how do run the Certificates Manager on my primary Hyper-V server?
    Any ideas?

  • Issue booting from Core install CD on AMD64

I fear this may be my sketchily-supported Emu1212m sound card causing issues again.
I am unable to get the core CD to boot at all on my machine. I took a photograph of the error message (click the thumbnail below for the full image):
For the record, the Gentoo CD boots just fine, as does UbuntuStudio. In fact, I even had my sound card working under Ubuntu before a kernel update from their server killed my custom configuration of ALSA. Hence, why I'd like to switch distros.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, everyone!

Well, I did try some different combinations, like the instructions said, before I got overwhelmed by how many combinations of 7-8 different commands there can be. Since I do have a dual-core, I would hope SMP isn't an issue. I'll give the other three a shot, and if that fails, the fourth as well, and see what happens. Thanks.

  • G505 How to do a Clean Install Windows 8.1 Core instead of Windows 8.0 Core?

    Hi,
I have G505 with Widows 8.0 core installed. I would like to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 core. So I installed but it ask for the activation key which I do not have. I thought we can use the same activation key for Windows 8.1 core. How do you activate it if it is possible.
Or do I have to install Windows 8.0 core and then upgrade to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Windows 8.0 core.
    Thanks for any help.

    hi magi44ken,
This might be because the WInodws 8.1 installer you used is a retail version and not an OEM from Lenovo.
The path should be Windows 8.0 then upgrade it. this way the Key inside the BIOS will be recognized and reactivated.
Try Doing a Onekey Recovery and see if the Recovery Partition is still active to revert the system back to Windows 8.0. Turn off the computer and hit the Movo button , see if recovery will be available.
If not, you will need to call Lenovo Technical Support to Obtain a copy of the Windows 8.0 install, (fees may apply).

  • Cannot install GUI to Hyper-V 2012 R2 server core

There is a lot of confusion between Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v Core and just the Hyper-V R2 hypercore free edition.
Those commands are going to work for the first option. The free version cannot have a GUI.
The only way I can fix this by removing this hypervisor and and installing Windows 2012 r2 with hyperv role, restore the configs and the VMs.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Installing Full Retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo System supplied with Win 8 Standard/Core

If you are attempting to install a full retail (or similar) copy of Win 8 Pro on Lenovo system that came with standard Win 8 (also referred to as Win 8 Core) installed from the factory, you will run into an issue at install time.
By MS design default , full Win 8 Pro retail (etc) versions look for a key embedded in the BIOS (often referred to as an OA3 or OA3.0 key).  If  that key does not match the version of Win 8 you are trying to install, the install will fail without offering the option of entering the retail key that was supplied with your full retail (etc) Win 8 Pro.
Microsoft has issued a "FAST PUBLISH" support article on how to work  around this design approach. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2796988
Note that this workaround requires the creating and placing of a PID.txt  file by methods which are not entirely described in the support article, so be prepared to do some more digging for all the relevant information.

    I don't work for Lenovo

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo H520g essential desktop, which came with Windows 8 SL pre-installed. I bought my Lenovo on August 8 2013 and as of the November 2013 the machine was updated to Windows 8.1 Single Language.
Today, April 14th 2014, I bought Windows 8.1 Pro on a full retail DVD from a local physical Microsoft reseller. I have successfully installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my H520g. The installation run smooothly, no problems at all.
The steps I took were as follows:
    1)  Checked the UEFI BIOS to see if the DVD drive were included on the boot list and set it as the first boot device.
    2) Booted the computer with the Windows 8.1 pro DVD on the optical drive.
    3) Entered the Windows 8.1 License Key that came on the retail DVD.
    4) Erased all partitions from the HDD were Windows 8.1 SL were installed.
    5) Proceeded normally with the installation
Yesterday I made a phone call to the Microsoft support and they assured me that on all computers that come with Windows 8 SL pre-installed, it is possible to install Windows 8.1 Pro. The conditions are: 1) you must install the full retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the OEM version; 2) you must do a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the install that preserves files and applications.
    Cheers,
    PauloBR

    Never mind
    I have figured it out.
I had to create few symbolic links under $HOME/Middleware
    In particular Oracle_IDM1
The config.sh script is setting ORACLE_HOME based on pwd.
And pwd is returning the path of the linked directory and not $HOME/Middleware/Oracle_IDM1
Once I fixed the script to simple use the correct ORACLE_HOME, it finishes correctly
