Core shutdown can not be heat related

I did some tests today, using my MBA 1.6 on an external monitor and running Second Life (tm) and even with the temperature below 60C I had a second core shutdown. After I quit SL (tm) the second core came back again almost immediately. Second Life (tm) is very CPU/GPU intensy.
And I saw this post today, maybe was already posted here, and I apologize if so.
Also using XP on boot camp, I did not have a core shutdown.
My MBA is one month old.
P.S. Safari with 5 Youtube videos open, 15 minutes each, no core shutdown.

Dear Marcus,
Thanks for the reply. My idea was exactly that, try to demonstrate that the second core shutdown maybe not hardware related and, yes, software related. The example I gave was Second Life ™, since the link I posted already talked on another application, WOW. I tried to be as more proactive as possible, since, I do not believed, as some threads I saw here, that Apple will be irresponsible to put on the market a 2K “laptop” with a basic hardware design flaw.
As you said, that can be a big relief to MBA users, since a hardware flaw can be more difficult to correct, as a software issue.
If someone is interested to follow the same path , please, look on the link on my first post.

  • Can not change anything relating to users

    I am running OS X Mavericks server. When I try to go into the "Users" pane to add a user, the buttons on the bottom left are completely greyed out. Also, when I try to edit an existing user, all of the fields are greyed out. I looked into my Admin user account, which is the one I logged into Server with, but "Administer this server" is unchecked. When I try to recheck it and press OK, it tells me that "Operation could not be completed because the current credentials do not have the appropriate privileges." Furthermore, all of my network users can not access any of their services, but my local admin user works fine.
    Is there any way to fix this?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • After new update we can not keep the "related links" off the screen. We uncheck it but it still keeps coming back.

    Every time we start Firefox, the "related links" are on the screen. We uncheck the box and it goes away. But the next time we use it, the related links are back. I cannot see why we would have to reset this every time we use the program. It is not a serious thing but surely is aggravating.

    Hi,
    As the issue happen only for Lync Mac client, so it should be the of Lync Mac client.
    You can try to perform a Clean Uninstall for Mac Lync client and then test again.

    I have the same problem...  IDK why I have an empty shutdown dialogue.  I also have a bunch of non user users appear through it's menu.
    It appears the problem has to do with most Arch installs not having consolekit anymore...

  • Problem related to PS CS6 ext. on Mac.  Nikon DSLR D610 raw file can not be opened

    Problem related to PS CS6 ext. on Mac. Installation is OK but I can't open picture from my Nikon D610 (Raw NEF format). I get a message "can not open this format ...". Checking Help menu to see if I miss an update the message I get is that I'm up-to-date but at the end Nikon D610 (format supported of course) files can not be opened . JPEG are OK but I work with raw files. Thanks

    What OS are you running: 10.x.x?
    What version of the Camera Raw plug-in do you have?  Do (About) Plug-ins / Camera Raw to find out.
    You need at least ACR 8.3 to open D610 files.  If the Help / Updates process does not work, then there is a manual install process you can do.  The page with the download is for when people accidentally updated to ACR 8.4 and need to roll back to ACR 8.3 due to their OS being incompatible, but the installer on that page works even if you haven’t erroneously updated to ACR 8.4:

  • [SOLVED] Can not shutdown/restart from KDE with systemd

    Hello,
      Recently, following I switched to a pure systemd setup.  The process was simple and most things worked "right out of the bpx".  However, I can not shutdown or restart from KDE!
    Let's say that I do the 3 finger salute (ALT-CTRL-DEL) and select "Turn off computer" what I get is KDE shutting down, but then I will only get a console (TTY) login prompt.  Pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL then will trigger a reboot.  I can also login and use "systemctl poweroff".  However, I don't understand why it doesn't work straight from KDE.
    Are there some packages I must install?  Are there some systemd services that I must enable?  What other relevant info should I include in this post?

    As bgc1954 said, there is also a symlink "/sbin/poweroff". Just edit the file "/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc", go to [shutdown] an replace the line "HaltCmd=/sbin/halt" with "HaltCmd=/sbin/poweroff".

  • Can NOT install Standard ONE on a 2 quad-core processor machine (licensing)

    This is from Oracle's licensing (July 2009):
    ===================================
    “When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name, a processor is counted equivalent to a socket. However, in the case of multi-chip modules, each chip in the multi-chip module is counted as one occupied socket.”
    This is also from Oracle's licensing (July 2009):
    =====================================
    “Oracle Database Standard Edition can only be licensed on servers that have a maximum capacity of 4 sockets. Oracle Standard Edition One may only be licensed on servers that have a maximum capacity of 2 sockets.”
    Now, this is what it seems to be:
    ===========================
    1 quad-core AMD/Intel Xeon chip counts as 4x0.5=2 sockets (reached the maximum capacity limit in the licensing terms) by simply using 1 (single) quad-core CPU box.
    and that's it - you can NOT install Standard Edition ONE on a 2 quad-core CPU Linux box :(((((
    For a AMD/Intel multi-core Linux boxes
    ===============================
    it can be a single quad-core CPU box (4x0.5=2 sockets -- but, paying twice the processor license - because it is now 2 sockets) or
    it can be a 2 dual-core CPU (2X2x0.5=2 sockets -- but, paying twice the processor license) or
    it can be a single dual-core CPU box (2x0.5=1 -- paying only a single processor license)
    I think it is time for Oracle to revisit the licensing terms for Standard ONE edition and change it to simple socket count (don't count the cores). It is getting more expensive to use Oracle Standard ONE.

    Everybody should also know - and OPN folks confirmed this morning - that an Oracle Sales person does not have the "legal" authority to overwrite what is written in OLSA. Sales can not rewrite the OLSA. However, Sales can request changes or addendums to the specific contract, which are reviewed by Oracle Legal and approved by Sales senior management (right up to Charles and Larry if needed).
    That said, very few Oracle employees are allowed to discuss any aspect of licensing terms. The official first point of contact is Sales, and they may only be the carrier pigeon of missives from the authority.
    When someone buys Oracle, OLSA is the only legally binding document. Everybody should keep the copy of the OLSA which is in effect at the time of their purchase, given that OLSA can be modified at a later date from the actual purchase.That happens to be true of any license or sales agreement, from Oracle or not. Also note that if you purchase support, renewals may affect the original OLSA.
    And it's one of the reasons old timers in these forums (such as Dan and myself) will prefix nearly any license discussion in the forums with "check with sales" and suffix it with "and anything you hear on the internet is probably useless in a court of law when you get audited".
    and after all that - thanks for digging into the details and posting them.
    (With the warning to any others using the information that the facts need to be reconfirmed for each individual case and date. A judge usually frowns on a defense of "It happened to a friend of a friend of mine" or "I read it on the internet")

    By the way - what you write is a change of policy. At one time, a box that could support 4 CPU but only had 2 CPU installed would not qualify for SE1. Good news indeed.

    To fix your issue is too complicated and lengthy to go into all of it here, it will require the services of person very familiar and experienced with Mac's to first recover your data and then restore OS X back to a functional state, then hopefully achieve the goals you were attempting.
    I advise you hire the services of a local Mac computer support technician experienced in these matters.
    Have them look at your Wifi and computer backup proceedures in the process.
    Good Luck.

    Intel Core Duo is a 32-bit processor, so the latest Mac OS X version you can install is Mac OS X Snow Leopard -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    You are running Mac OS X 10.6.8, so you are already running the most recent Mac OS X version for your computer.

    Try changing the channel in use in case you're getting interference.
    If you have WEP enabled on the Internet Sharing it'ss worth disabling it whilst troubleshooting the connectivity issues.

    I have a Mac running 10.5.8. I have seen this on different models as well.
    The user can not logout, restart or shutdown. When those commands are selected in the GUI nothing happens.
    In the past the only way I could fix it was to create a new profile. There must be an easier way. does anyone know which files I should delete instead of having to create a new profile?

    I'd launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the cause of the problem. You might find that it's due to a process that refuses to quit.

    You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
    I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.
