Cored to Death - how many is enough for CS5?

I’ve been searching for info on the ‘best’ PC specs for a new PS machine and haven’t had a lot of luck. The Premiere Pro forum has some good stuff on building out a machine but my main goal is for a cutting edge Photoshop workstation.
I would like to spec a DIY/custom build that will go up against a couple of dual hex-core 12GB ram Dell machines our IT dept recently bought. These things are screamers but I think they’re a bit of overkill in the processor area – and for what they spent on two of these I’m thinking I could spec-build three or four (and we need them all). I could save some $$ and/or reassign resources (better video, faster I/O) by going with fewer processor/cores, especially if they’re not really needed.
I’ve got an i7 quad @home that’s no slouch but am leaning toward a single Intel Core i7-980x Hex 3.33GHz, 12GB ram with an OCZ RevoDrive SSD for a boot and two WD VelociRaptor for scratch and data. Add an appropriate mother board, a decent case and power (yes, 64 bit Win 7) and I think this setup should keep up with or out perform the dualies.
We work on geospatial data that is more big and flat (1 to 8 GB files) vs small and complex and what little benchmarking (system monitoring) I’ve done while working seems to show that all those cores aren’t used a whole lot by our ‘bread and butter workflow – it’s much more dependant on memory and read/write.
I’d like to get something together for management ASAP so if you have some suggestions or experience in this area I’d love to hear from you…
Thanks!

We have a few older (3 years old) dual quad-core machines here too that I wasn't really all that impressed with.
Can you be more specific?  Just curious.
I ask because my main workstation is a 4 year old dual processor dual core machine (Dell Precision 490) and it really chews through Photoshop work.  It just doesn't seem to get bogged down anywhere near as easily as any of the single processor machines I've used, and I tend to do a LOT of multitasking.  It's also very stable on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
You will, of course, want the fastest memory bandwidth and interprocessor communications pipeline you can afford.  And fast disk (e.g., RAID-based) access.  A lot of things have to come together to make a computer a throughput workhorse.

    3k to 4k means 3001 to 4000?
Assuming this is true you need 3 sub alerters. Use the between operator to compare your values.

  • How many SQL CAL for bpc 7.0 Microsoft

    hello
customer asks how many Microsoft SQL Client Access Licenses he must buy to use SAP BPC 7.0 SP3 Microsoft (100 users).
As there is not any more direct access from Bpc client to SQL or Analysis services, I think 1 CAL is enough.
Could tell me if I'm right ?
    Thanks.

    David,
Don't you think your remark was rather uncharitable? It is true, there are a lot of people trying to mooch off of others' kindness (and as long as there are willing folks complying for whatever reasons, it is not going to change anytime soon), when it comes to hardcore technical details about a product, lot of people are at a loss as to how the things work (yours truly included -  i have worked in SAP space for almost a decade and i couldn't tell you their licensing details - I never needed to do that to discharge my role as a functional consultant). I think Remy did indicate the thinking behind the question which is much more than a lot of folks do when they ask you and others to just e-mail some document etc....
I am sure you would concur.

Does anyone knows how many GB's it takes per minute for a HD video on Iphone 4?
Also, how many MB it takes for a perfectly clear taken picture?
    Thanks.

If your a casual user who only needs a few apps and games, and not 1000s of songs and pics, go for 16GB. IMO that is more than enough for most people.. I hav 1000 pics, 200 songs, 15 apps and still hav around 6GB left.. If you can afford 32GB though then why not

Thank you for posting your concern on Best Buy Unboxed forum. Ready to use the e-gift cards that you have been saving from Birthdays and special occasions, and not sure on how many can be used in an order, can have an impact on how you place your order.
To the best of my knowledge, the most updated information is found on the link that you shared on this forum. You should be able to use to 10 e-gift cards per order.

  • Minimum How many dimension required for FDM integration Script

    Hi Gurus
I have only 2 dimensions in my SQL Table name dbo.ABC (Example: 1.Entity 2.Account and amount(data value)
    Example:
    USA, SALES, 50000
(Including value its total 3 dimensions)
How to export this data to Target HFM Application.
Integration Script got success when i click on validation it is shows only 2 dimension 1.Account 2.Entity. i have mapped correctly. but validation screen not showing anything. i got gold fish for validation button and Export is also showing success and got goldfish. but no data is exported to HFM application.
in FDM outbox its created a file which is containing only *!data* text. There is no record in this file.
I want to load the data with rest of the dimensions with [None] member combination as i don't have the additional dimensions in my source file.
Minimum how many dimension required to export the data from FDM to HFM?
    regards
    Taruni

    Hi,
I came to know, at least one member from the source file should be there in the integration script then only we can assign at least [None] member or any member for the target dimensions.
My source file having only 3 dimensions ( USA,Sales,Amount)
    1.USA,2.Sales,3.$50000
    Import Screen Dimensions:
    1.Source-FM-Entity
    2.Source-FDM-Account
    3.Account Description
    4.SourceICP
    5.SourceCustom1
    6.SourceCustom2
    7.SourceCustom3
    8.SourceCustom4
    9.Amount
In the integration script its taking the values as
    Source-FM-Entity(0)
    Source-FDM-Account(1)
    Account Description
    SourceICP
    SourceCustom1
    SourceCustom2
    SourceCustom3
    SourceCustom4
    Amount(2)
above it shows only 0,1,2 numbers are assigned to source dimensions.
As my source file having only 3 Dimension so it is taking only 3 dimensions shown below. rest of the dimensions it is not showing in the import screen.
    *0.Source-FM-Entity,1.Source-FDM-Account,2.Amount*
If i assign any values(3-9) to next dimensions or if I left blank rs.fields("txtAcctDes") with its showing below error messages:
Error: An error occurred importing the file.
Detail: Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.
    At line: (39 and 42-46)
So i have assigned Source-FDM-Account Number<font color="Blue">(rs.fields(1) </font>Value to rest of the dimensions in my integration script.
    <font color="Blue">rsAppend.Fields("Account") = rs.fields(1).Value</font>
    rsAppend.Fields("Desc1") = rs.fields(1).Value
    rsAppend.Fields("ICP") = rs.fields(1).Value
    rsAppend.Fields("UD1") = rs.fields(1).Value
    rsAppend.Fields("UD2") = rs.fields(1).Value
    rsAppend.Fields("UD3") = rs.fields(1).Value
    rsAppend.Fields("UD4") = rs.fields(1).Value
Now am able to import the data into import screen, And i found all the above member names as Sales as i assigned Account dimension number(1) to these members temporarily to succeed the import process . Then i have mapped to Target dimensions with [None] member combination as these members are not in original source file. Then rest of the process Export and Check is done perfectly.
*<font color="red">1.Am i right?? Please suggest me the correct process?</font>*
*<font color="red">2.Can we use blank values in Integration Script as mentioned below??</font>*
    rsAppend.Fields("Desc1") = rs.fields("txtAcctDes").Value
    rsAppend.Fields("Account") = rs.fields("txtAcct").Value
    rsAppend.Fields("Entity") = rs.fields("txtCenter").Value
    *1.Added value*
    Example: rsAppend.Fields("Desc1") = rs.fields("1").Value
    *2.Blank Value*
    rsAppend.Fields("Desc1") = rs.fields("txtAcctDes").Value
*<font color="red">3.As per my observation system is not accepting blank values in integration script. Please correct me??</font>*

  • How many cert need for Lync 2013

How many cert I need to buy???
[internet] <-->  [TMG]   <--> [Lync edge]
                                                 [Lync front end]
is it correct to buy this two cert. (then what's the function for)
    Cert 1 for TMG
    Lyncrproxy.abc.com (for
    Reverse Proxy???)
    Meet.abc.com (for web conference)
    Dailin.abc.com (for phone??)
    Lyncweb.abc.com (for ???)
    Lyncdiscover.abc.com (for Mobility client setup)
    Cert 2 for Lync edge
    Sip.abc.com (for SIP Access)
Lyncwebconf.abc.com (for Web Conferencing Edge service)
    Lyncav.abc.com (for A/V service)
    Thanks

You can use one cert across the Edge and Reverse Proxy as follows:-
sip.abc.com - Lync Access (use as subject name and assign to Edeg Access) (Edge)
Lyncweb.abc.com - For distribution Group and addressbook service (TMG)
dialin.abc.com - webconferencing dialin URL (TMG)
meet.abc.com - Web conferencing meet URL (TMG)
Lyncwebconf.abc.com - Web Conferencing mnedia (Edge)
    lyncdiscover.abc.com - mobility (Edge)
The simplest way of requesting this cert is from the Lync Deployment Wizard on the Lync Edge Server. Be sure to marek the request as exportable so the cert can be exported from Edge and imported to TMG.

  • How many connection opened for webdynpro java

    Hi,
I have 2 webdynpro java application. The applications sharing  the same backend function module.Could anyone tell me
How many connection will be established when the same user wants to open 2 different application but these 2 application shares the same function module.
    Thanks
    Kanai

    Hi,
In webdybnpro ,each Model in an Application utilizes a seperate Connection. If u create JCO connection pool for the User then while connecting to backend
1)The JCO connection pool Manager will open a new connection pool and opens the first connection.
The next available connection from the pool is allocated to the model object.
2)The model object is now able to invoke the required functionality in the ABAP system.
    3) When the connection is no longer required by the application, it is returned to the pool.
    4) The connection remains logged on to the backend system until either the next application
request is received, or the connection timeout is reached.
    5) If no application requests arrive before the timeout is reached, the connection is flagged
    for closure.
Note:-If an Application contains 2 models which are connecting to same ABAP system then second Model can be told to share the same JCo connection used by First model This is done by calling its setConnectionProvider() method.

How is it possible to see how many conferencing session or conferencing party is used in CUCM 9.1 system.  We are using conference bridges on call manager resources. But I 'm not sure, how many conferencing capacity we have?
Is there any clue to see it?

    Hi there!
Please find in RTMT the Performance section. Then choose needed cucm server and proceed to Cisco SW Conference Bridge Device.
    You can monitor this things:
RosourceActive - shows how many parties connected
    RosourceAvailable - remained capacity
RosourceTotal - total sw bridge capacity
SWConferenceActive - shows how many conferences are active on sw brigde

  • Erase Options -- How many is enough?

The Disk Utility under the Install DVD gives you three Erase/write zeros options -- 1x, 7x's and 32. On my PowerBook G4, I did a successful (so far) install of Leopard after many problems with a previous "clean install." (prior install - I didn't erase but did what Apple calls "Erase in Install") Last weekend I used the 7 pass erase/write zeros before the installation on the PB. This took some 4-5 hours. I have an empty HD on my MacPro where I am considering "testing" Leopard. Is it really necessary to erase and write zeros more than One Time? With a 500GB HD, I would guess the 7 pass process would take a day to complete.

Whether or not, a zero out on a new drive is necessary is up for grabs. It can't hurt. What it will do is spare any bad blocks, if any exist. One zero pass is enough. The 7X and 32X are for more complete data destruction, so any data written to the drive previously cannot be easily retrieved.

  • How Many QMaster Instances for Core i7 iMac?

I've read several tutorials online, but none seem to address the new Core i7 iMacs specifically...
On this new machine is it best to setup QMaster with 2 instances (1/2 of the 4 physical cores on the i7) or 4 instances (1/2 of the 8 logical cores on the i7)? Or something altogether different? I've got 8GB of RAM installed, so each instance will get 2GB or more allocated.
Right now I'm using 3 instances, I figured I'd split the deal! =)

Selecting half of what Qmaster gives you would be the sweet spot.
In your case, 4 is ideal if you are doing a lot of other things while compressor is running.
Photoshop, Mail, Safari, Final Cut, etc...
4 will give you enough overhead to be able to do most other things.
I wouldn't go lower than 4 unless you're planning on doing intensive things while compressor is running, which I wouldn't suggest.
Now, if you don't think you'll be doing much at all while compressor is running, increase it to 6. This will give you more power and still have enough overhead for the system to function adequately.

  • How many disk groups for +DATA?

    Hi All,
Does oracle recommends having one big/shared asm disk group for all of the databases?
In our case we going to have 11.2 and 10g rac running against 11.2 ask...
Am I correct in saying that I have to set asm’s compatibility parameter to 10 in order to be able to use the same disk?
Is this is a good idea? Or should i create another disk group for the 10g db’s?
I’m assuming there are feature that will not be available when the compatibility is reduced to 10g...

    Oviwan wrote:
what kind of storage system do you have? nas? what is your protocol between server and storage? tcp/ip (=>nfs)? fc?....
if you have a storage with serveral disks then you create mostly more than one lun (raid 0, 1, 5 or whatever). if the requirement is, that you need a 1 TB diskgroup, then I would not create 1 1TB lun, I would create 5x200GB lun's for example, just for the case that you have to extend the diskgroup with a same lun size. if its 1 TB then you have to add another 1TB lun, if there are 5x200GB luns then you can simply add 200GB.
I have nowhere found a document that says: if you have exactly 16 lun's for a diskgroup it's best. it depends on os, storage, etc...
so if you create a 50gb diskgroup I would create just one 50gb lun for example.
hthyes its NAS, connectd using Iscsi. it has 5 disks 1TB each and configued with RAID5. I found below requirments on asm ... it indicates 4luns as minimum per diskgroup, but it doesnt clearify whether its for external redundancy or as mredundancy types.
•A minimum of four LUNs (Oracle ASM disks) of equal size and performance is recommended for each disk group.
•Ensure that all Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have similar storage performance and availability characteristics. In storage configurations with mixed speed drives, such as 10K and 15K RPM, I/O performance is constrained by the slowest speed drive.
•Oracle ASM data distribution policy is capacity-based. Ensure that Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have the same capacity to maintain balance.
•Maximize the number of disks in a disk group for maximum data distribution and higher I/O bandwidth.
•Create LUNs using the outside half of disk drives for higher performance. If possible, use small disks with the highest RPM.
•Create large LUNs to reduce LUN management overhead.
•Minimize I/O contention between ASM disks and other applications by dedicating disks to ASM disk groups for those disks that are not shared with other applications.
•Choose a hardware RAID stripe size that is a power of 2 and less than or equal to the size of the ASM allocation unit.
•Avoid using a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) because an LVM would be redundant. However, there are situations where certain multipathing or third party cluster solutions require an LVM. In these situations, use the LVM to represent a single LUN without striping or mirroring to minimize the performance impact.
•For Linux, when possible, use the Oracle ASMLIB feature to address device naming and permission persistency.
ASMLIB provides an alternative interface for the ASM-enabled kernel to discover and access block devices. ASMLIB provides storage and operating system vendors the opportunity to supply extended storage-related features. These features provide benefits such as improved performance and greater data integrity.
one more question about fdisk partitioning. is it correct that we should only create one partition per luns (5x200Gb luns in my case) is it because this way i will have more consistent set of luns( in term of performance)?
