Corel .cmx to AI8 Mac

When I no longer have access to Mac Classic OS, I won't able to access clipart in my ancient Corel Gallery 2 collection (circa 1995). The files are in .cmx format.
AI CS3 under OS X won't open the .cmx files.
An AppleScript on the the Corel Gallery 2 CD is supposed to use the 'Corel Gallery 2.0 PPC' application to export as EPS, but I can't get the batch portion of the script to work in Classic OS. The problem seems to relate to an unsupported drag and drop command.
I've installed Illustrator 8 under Classic. It will open the .cmx files and allow me to save them as AI 8 files (which would be my first choice of file format).
Can anyone suggest a way to use AI 8 to batch-process a folder of .cmx files to AI8 format?

Did you ever receive and answer for this. I too installed an old version of Illustrator thinking i was very clever until i couldn't find a batch process option

  • How to open .cmx files?

    Hi,
I have data of images with .cmx formats.  Do you know how to open them with Adobe Illustrator on Mac?
    Thanks.

See if you can purchase an older Mac compatible version of Corel Draw. You'd then be able to convert the .cmx files.
That is exactly what the OP does not have to do they can do that now.
They cannot open it directly in CS 3 or CS5 which is what they are asking.
I have an old license for the Corel Suites for the Mac that would run on my G3 and could like the op easily open the files but that would be a hassle.

  • How do I install my plug-ins in Photoshop CS5 64bit

Can't seem to install my plug-ins that I have been using in Photoshop CS3 and CS4.   Mediachance, Nik, onOne,  Alien Skin, Photkit, Fluidmask, Fred Miranda, etc.  They all work in CS3 in Win 7 Pro 64bit, but do not show in CS5.

I tried CS4 and CS5 on my old Hp (32bit).  CS4 was OK, but nothing to write
home about.  CS5 could not support my plug-ins as well as CS4, actions did
not work well in CS5.  I ended up having to keep CS3 extended active.  When
all else fails I use PS 7.  Ended up dumping the entire CS4 Design Suite
Premium.  As it turns out I should have dumped CS5 and Kept CS4 Active.  I
do not like having to use the automate menu to access plug-ins that were in
the Filters Menu or added pull down menu bar (extensis/onOne menu bar).
Also do not like the very small text for the Pull Downs. CS5 apparently does
not support the onOne menu bar.  I dumped CS5(64bit) later today.  Installed
32Bit CS5.  It’s a real shame I can not use the full performance features of
this performance laptop (Quad Core, 2GB discrete graphics, 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz,
SSD/Hybrid drives) with CS5.  Had to process a photo shoot today and ended
up using DXO Optics Pro.  Really very unhappy with CS5.  The few
enhancements vs. the dysfunction of CS5 are not worth the cost.  Sure glad I
did not go for the full Design Premium upgrade this time.  The accumulated
cost/value of all my plug-ins by far exceed the value of the CS5 upgrade.  I
just may go back to my Corel Apps on my MAC.  Can not afford to purchase
(once again) all my Plug-ins.  Nik , Alien Skin, and onOne are grossly
    overpriced.
Sorry to RANT.  Just not happy with CS4 and CS5.  I have been using
Photoshop since the version 4 release.  The best releases were PS7 and CS3

  • Old Wordperfect files now Unix

When I used Corel WordPerfect on the Mac, I had a number of files that once I had gone to OS X showed up as Unix files and I cannot open them. Mind control Link Plus will not deal with them, nor will they open in Word, Pages, Text Edit, Preview.
    Any suggestions?

Sounds like they lost their creator code. If you've got xcode installed, you can reset it with /Developer/Tools/SetFile
If you have a file that opens normally, you can display it's creator code using:
    /Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo

  • Switching from CorelDraw to Illustrator

I have been a die-hard CorelDraw user for nearly 20 years now! So this switch is not easy on me! LOL  But it's ended up being one of necessity.
    A little background:
My HP laptop computer recently started acting pretty funny and finally gave up the ghost about a week ago. Over the years I've been under quite a bit of pressure from clients, fellow designers, and print shops to switch from CD to AI, but I'd resisted. But the replacement computer I ended up getting last week is a Mac, and I see it as a good opportunity to force myself to make the switch.
Most of my files are saved into DropBox. BUT, I'm not finding any sort of import feature in AI that will allow me to open up my native CDR files. Since that Windows computer has gone to the great beyond, it's not going to be easy for me to open those files up and export them.
I suppose I could just install Parallels or something similar, but if I'm going to make this switch to Mac, I'd like to keep things ALL Mac, and not give myself the option of reverting to old ways (LOL).
Any suggestions on how I can open my old CDR files in AI fairly easily?  I understand there are likely to be problems with transparencies from the original files. That's expected. But I'm having issues with other tasks as well.  For instance:
I had a bitmap image in my original CorelDraw image and cropped it down a bit. In Corel, if I later wanted to "uncrop" that bitmap, I could easily do so. Is there a way of doing this in AI as well?
Also, When I'm trying to select objects within a specific area, the selector tool seems to select anything that the area even partially touches. So if the edge of an object falls within my selection area, the whole object is selected. Or if there are objects on top of a background object and I try and select, the background object gets selected as well because it is "touched" by the selection area. This is driving me batty!
I'm sure there will be more issues as I start working my way through things, but these are for starters.
Thanks in advance for any help y'all can afford.
    ~Laura

    Hi Laura,
1 - The issue of opening CDR files: One solution may be to download a trial of Corel Draw to your Mac and save your files as Illustrator documents or to convert them using a converter like Inkscape (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ)
2 - Illustrator doesn't have a "crop" tool perse. Instead, you use clipping and opacity masks to hide areas of the image. The images can later be "released" from the mask, if you'd like. Here are some videos explaining how to do this.
3 - The issue of selection: I have never used Coreldraw myself, nor do I have an idea of how much experience you have with Illustrator, so please forgive me in advance if I am oversimplifying my explanation here. There are two selection tools: the Selection Tool (black arrow) and the Direct Select Tool (white arrow). The black arrow will select entire objects within a dragged selection area, while the white tool selects points within a selection area. As far as accidentally selecting objects below the desired one, try shift+clicking on the top object to add it to your selected objects instead of drag selecting, or dragging the tops objects to a new layer and locking the one below. Individual objects can also be locked.
I hope this is helpful, and please don't hesitate to follow up if you have any questions.

  • Illustrator CS3 Trial

I was trying to download an CS 3 Trial version to see if and
how it'll open my Freehand MX Files. I thought this process was a
complete disgrace! I tried and tried and I still haven't a trial
version. The Process to register takes ages and just when u click

the Adobe site? Is there an alternative to Illustrator?
I doubt it since Corel has stopped doing Mac Software. Is
Quark Inc. doing anything to keep the market open and consumer
friendly? Probably not cause they sell the most expensive Program.
Why is it that people have to buy Software which is overpriced and

Illustrator CS3 opens FH files surprisingly well. Some

  • Duplicate applications after using Migration Assistant

I'm posting this because I haven't seen this topic addressed yet regarding using Migration Assistant for transferring data from old G5 to new Mac Pro.
I used the Migration Assistant, which took hours to transfer data and stopped the first time due to a power backup overload. The second time I ran it, everything had transferred successfully, and I've been using my Mac Pro for almost two weeks now, with slight glitches that have been easily solved.
Here's my situation: In my Applications folder, there are a number of applications that have "(from old Mac)" as a suffix. Specifically, all of my Adobe Creative Suite applications have duplicates, as does Cocktail Extras, Corel Painter IX, DiskTracker (Mac OS X), Extensis Suitcase X1, Fetch 4.0.2, Finale 20045 and 2005b, and FontDoctor X for Macintosh.
Needless to say, I would like to recover the additional disk space that these duplicates are occupying, but is it okay to simply trash the ones that say "(from old Mac)", as I backed up my old G5 right before runnning the Migration Assistant, and I still have it sitting here, just in case something bad happens while I'm in the middle of a project? Or, should I trash the new ones? The Creative Suite apps have been activated on the Mac Pro, so I'm assuming that the "old Mac" ones could be deleted.
Anyone having any experience with this? I don't want to reinstall a lot of things unless I have to, as I will be upgrading a lot of the apps as soon as Intel-native versions are released, and things are working well so far.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
    2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   8 GB RAM
    1.8 Mhz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Yes, it's OK to trash them. You have transferred items that are from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac that apparently had Intel versions of the same software already installed. You definitely do not want PPC versions (this does not apply to most Adobe software which is PPC-only.)
Unfortunately, Migration Assistant doesn't always know when not to transfer PPC software to an Intel Mac. This is especially a problem for the /Home/Library/ and /Library/ folders because MA may overwrite Intel components with PPC components. This can cause the Intel Mac to run slowly or not at all.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.
Additional links that will be helpful to new Intel-Mac users:
    Intel In Macs

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.
Written by Kappy with additional contributions from a brody.
Unfortunately, if you find problems with your new computer it may be due to problems that arise when migrating from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac using Migration Assistant. If this be the case your only recourse is to reinstall OS X. You should also reinstall your third-party software (or update it) to be sure you are using universal binary versions (if available.)

  • Compatible adobe software

Can Mac's run Adobe and corel products?

A Mac can run any product that is specifically written for it. If you mean will it run a Window's version, the answer is yes! However that version needs to be running in what's called Boot Camp, which runs Windows natively on a Mac. That brings us full circle, much like what OS X does to windows, runs circles around it!

No, you can't run that on Mac OS X; what makes you think you could?
If you want to run Windows software on a Mac, you need to install Boot Camp and Windows, or use other virtualization software such as Virtual Box, VMware, or Parallels to install and run Windows.

    Hi -V
I click right on the zone to duplicate, then I left click,  getting an
error message "Impossible to use the tampon tool, because the zone to
duplicate has not been defined (Option clic to define a source point)"
I dont understand, on Windows I know this operation with Corel
For the transparency it's OK now

    Hi Porquy,
    First:
For clone stamp to work you should first define the source to clone. That you can do by pressing option key (alt key on windows) and clicking on the image area that you want to clone. Note that right click doesn't work here.
Now just click at the destination location where you want to paste (copy) the source area.
    Second:
The Transparency settings in the Preferences have to do with the image background, as to what should the background look at a particular area in the image that is transparent.
For your purpose, just do this:
Go to File menu>  Save for Web.
In Save for Web dialog, under presets: select "GIF" for file formats, Transparency box checked on and "None" for Matte.
Click OK and save the file at the desired location.
I hope this is what you were asking.

I have been using Windows for a while now and man, I'm am

The big question is what problems will I run into on a Mac

There's been a few updates since then. ;o)
    > The big question is what problems will I run into on a
    Mac Powerbook with
    > Dreamweaver and MS Access databases?
Well, if you want to use OSX on your mac, the biggest problem
    is that you
    can't run Access on OSX.
Granted, you probably shouldn't be using Access for web work
    to begin
    with...
If you are using Access, I'm guessing you are also using ASP.
    ASP requires
IIS to run and IIS will not run on OSX either.
Of course, you can install Windows on a Mac, so you could buy
    your Mac and
use it as a windows machine, but then you're back with having
    the same ol'
windows probelms it sounds like you want to get away from.
    Alternatively,
you could run Windows in virtualization mode on top of OSX,
    which would be
    nice.
Bottom line, though, if you are a web developer that works
    mainly with
Microsoft technologies (.net, asp, access, etc.) it probably
    makes sense to
    stick with a Microsoft OS.
Otherwise, the Mac is a great web developer platform. OSX can
    easily run
Apache, PHP and the like. As mentioned, you can also run
    Windows so it
becomes a great testing computer as well.

  • Why is it so hard to drag & drop files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa?

I realize we have two totally different operating systems, but it seems that you can get so close to sharing files and then there's a blockade. I have a iMac 24 and I love it. I also love Cored Draw, have been using it for 15 years and I still don't have the courage to install my purchased copy of Parallels!!! So I create vector graphics on my PC, then export as a GIF or PDF. I can use those files on my pc, but for some strange reason... in the folder where I'm storing them (and they show up on the PC) only the original *.cdr Corel files are showing up... none of the GIF files or JPG or PDF files show up. And like I said, they are there, I can see them in the explorer window on the pc.
This is crazy... I need to be able to easily shuffle files back and forth. Obviously running OSX latest version on the Mac, running Vista Home Premium on the PC. PC shows up in finder, as does the folder... just those image files that don't. Is there a simple explanation? TIA

What I meant (and didn't explain well enough) was you should try to put your .jpgs in a different/separate folder, e.g. copy/duplicate/export or whatever you need to do on a Windows machine to get a separate copy in a separate location. You could test it by sending yourself an email attachment and/or copy it to a thumb drive, other external, or a CD. If you can open/read any of those on the Mac, then I'd say the problem is on the Windows side. I have to help my elderly neighbor occasionally with his Windows machine and encountered a similar problem: a .jpg he wanted me to copy to a thumb drive would not cooperate.
+Is it possible that a Mac cannot see/read files created under Vista+
AFAIK, .jpgs and .pdfs are a "universal" format; I email either/both to/from friends using Windows and we've never had a problem. I'm not sure about .cdr since that is a proprietary format and may only work with the app version it was created in.
