Coreservicesd crashing
I installed 10.5 Leopard. It's very nice. Also, I updated 10.5.1 some days ago.
(Please forgive my poor english)
But there was a problem. Sometimes, I had experience system lock. Mouse was moved, application was worked. But keyboard doesn't work, application quitting and launching was impossible.
I check crash reporter. So, I found coreservicesd was crashing in this time. But I can't found what is problem. I can't experience this symptom in Tiger(10.4).
coreservicesd was crashed randomly(not so frequently). Only solution is system rebooting. I check my hardware and memory in apple hardware test.
I attached log file. Please, answer me what is a matter. please.

Do you use Creative Suite 3 or Microsoft Office 2004? These are 2 apps that almost GUARANTEE a crash of coreservicesd - it ALWAYS happens after using these apps and then closing them with me... Its the apps that are causing the problem. Some CS3 apps don't cause this (Photoshop CS3, Bridge, In Design, and Dreamweaver, so far) because they've been updated - Office on the other hand is a disaster.
Wait for updates, or if you really need these apps I'd switch back to Tiger until this happens.

Fix for 10.5.6 and coreservicesd crashing after update
Both MBP C2D2006 and MacBook Air early 2008 worked fine with the 10.5.6 update so I decided to try it on my PPC. Perfectly happy 10.5.5 PowerMac G5 then the dreaded 10.5.6 update dec 27. Would have thought everything was sorted out. I go to software update and installed it. Everything looked fine until I logged in... nothing responded, I thought my account was hosed so I tried another, it worked for a little while. I kept trying to see what can fix it so I download the combo updater, after reading it can help. After successful combo updater, same thing. I look around and all I can do is ssh in after its booted. It turns out coreservicesd is responsible. I try a couple of things I found here in the discussions none worked. Just for the **** of it I completely removed /Library/Caches and boom its perfectly normal again. Thank god for that I would hate to restore my from a backup and start again.
Thank you so much for this post. I was having this exact issue: 10.5.6 update, coreservicesd crashing (because it was saying it was version 0). I tried the combo update because that has helped stuff in the past, with no luck. Again thank you, I couldn't find any other info out there and I really did not want to reinstall.

Coreservicesd crashed, Coup de grace?
Several days ago my previously smooth running computer underwent a startling spiral following Dante deep into the circles of ****. "coreservicesd crashed" is all over my console log.
This all started soon after I installed *Fan Control 1.2* and SMCfancontrol simultaneously. The next time I booted up the command terminal screen appeared. I'm somewhat of a tech novice and didn't really know what to do, typing "help", "end", "startup", etc. Eventually the normal loading sequence took place (albeit very slowly) and I logged in to find the spinning pinwheel in a state of hyperactivity and basic programs like *Quicktime and Microsoft Word* unresponsive (they won't even open). I uninstalled both fan programs including the "daemon" which fan control uses and restarted. No improvement. I then opened *disk utility* and verified the disk, permissions, repair.. with no major revelations or changes. I then proceeded to *flash the PRAM* and restarted, again no change. Since only some of the applications are affected I thought perhaps RAM is the culprit and downloaded and ran "Rember" which reported that both 1 gig sticks were healthy. I bought an additional stick from a name brand (can't remember exact brand, maybe Crucial) last year but it seems to check out. I am away at college and foolishly don't have the startup disks here with me. I feel like Reformatting is the only viable option left (although im hesitant). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Also my internal hard drive is nearly at capacity with maybe 10 gigs left (though I doubt this has any impact on these issues).
Thanks,
SeanHi Sean, and a warm welcome to the forums!
The only other solution I can possibly see other than really needing your Install Disks, is is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
I don't think that is a sure thing though, I think you need at least 20-30 GB free space then do a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space, and don't have any Disk Directory problems...

I've been having a major problem with my installation of Tiger. It's been playing up for ages (applications refusing to quit even when a killall command is issued from the terminal, etc) and now it won't even boot. It cycles between a blank blue screen and a blue screen with the throbber.
I've tracked the problem down to coreservicesd crashing on boot, so I suspect lsregister to be at fault. The problem is that lsregister exits with a segmentation fault when I launch it from single user mode, so I can't rebuild it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The only way I've been able to recover from a segmentation fault was an archive & reinstall.

Coreservicesd crash (com.apple.LaunchServices) screws up most running apps
I've been seeing crashes in the coreservicesd process that screw up most running apps and force me to restart the entire machine. When this happens, the Dock disappears and then reappears showing no running apps. The menu bar also gets stuck on a single app, even when I try to switch to another window with the mouse. The symptoms are very similar to those described at http://discussions.apple.com/thread/3289125, but I am on a MacBook Air running Lion 10.7.1.
Here's what gets logged to the system console:

I've a problem with my Leopard installation. It suddenly became very very slow. I've repaired the filesystem but that did not solve it.
I can however boot in single user mode and look at the system logs. I see there a repeated crash of coreservicesd.
I see messages like this:
(com.apple.coreservicesd[543]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 546 PPID 1 lsregister
(com.apple.coreservicesd[543]): Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
And this gets repeated every few seconds.
Anyone has any idea how to fix this. It should have something to do with lsregister but what ???Well, if you have everything backed up, that's good. If you're willing try something, it might be that rebuilding your launch services database will help. From the command line, run this command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
This will reset, then rebuild the database. Although I don't think it's strictly necessary, restarting your machine after this command has run successfully would probably be a good idea.
Honestly, this is just a shot in the dark, but maybe you'll get lucky... -
Core Services crash - unknown reason...
Cmd+Tab stopped working, keyboard input got ignored. restart was required.
I saw the info about the coreservicesd crash in the console.log.
Just in case anybody's got the same issue - you're not alone

(???) <66102D4E-6C8B-77D0-6766-2A1788B20C6F> /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylibI had the exact same problem and, as the previous post, I realized when Cmd+Tab stopped working. When I clicked Finder in the Dock, a message showing an error appeared (I don't remember clearly, but I think the code "-10881" was present).
Quickly, all the system became unfunctional, so I had to force reset (pressing power for 4 seconds) because I even couldn't reboot by software...
When the computer started again, I saw the console and one message said that coreservicesd crashed, with a report logged in some file. The file in question is very similar to the one Bartek posted:

I have a recently buyed Macbook Pro, and this is the second time all the system start to fail until I have no choice but force restart... this is worse than a Windows BSOD because I see my Macbook walking to death and I can't do nothing about it! -
For all users of the newest MBPs - freezing problem
I spent the whole last week trying to detect the problem of the freezing OS (every N minutes, a freeze for 20-30 sec).
If you're experiencing the same issue, don't waste your time uninstalling 'suspicious' software like I did… this helps. Really:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8414998&posted=1#post8414998
Downgrading the EFI 1.7 (preinstalled or installed with Software Update) to EFI 1.6 solves the problem. No more freezing. The update procedure seemed a bit risky to me but well, it worked (you can use an USB stick, I used my external USB hard drive)
My tech specs: MacBookPro5,4, 2,53 GHz, 4GB RAM, HDD - Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02, OS 10.6.1
One more thing: in case of other strange problems, try uninstalling Logitech mouse drivers if you've got those. That one solved my coreservicesd crashing problems. I'm waiting for the incoming update of Logitech.yes, I did. I spent at least 8 hours searching for a solution here, in the forums and tried everything making sense... The EFI downgrade was the only thing that helped.
My personal opinion is: Apple should offer the EFI downgrade option to all users in an official way. It looks like my favorite vendor does not want to admit they made a hardware+software mistake (the EFI 1.7 update solves some HDD issues on some new MBPs but causes other problems on other MBPs).

No menu bar, Dashboard after 10.4.11 upgrade on G3 iMac
I'm not a Mac expert, so bear with me here. I installed the 10.4.11 upgrade on my wife's iMac DV G3 (i.e. the most important machine in the house). During the installation, I got a popup stating that my startup disk was nearly full and that I should (not must, but should) delete some files. I clicked through the popup and the completed the installation. After that the machine rebooted and I got to a blue background screen but no Dashboard or menu bar at the top of the screen.
I rebooted in safe mode (power on w/shift key) and got to a login window, logged in, and got to the same blue background screen.
Q - What are my other options here? I seem to have no access into the machine, though it seems to be booted and not dead.
Please help.
tcpasleyI still have the original problem of No top menu, No dashboard, No desktop Icons after login. I still see coreservicesd crashed in /var/logs/system.log.
Here's what I've done:
Booted from Install DVD, repaired Disk and Permissions repeatedly - no problems here; no repairs done after the first pass through (and only permissions needed repair then).
From a bash terminal: checked /var/logs/system.log. Found the coreservicesd crash. Also see that lookupd exits abnormally.
As per an Apple Tiger support page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464), followed the instructions for "You see an empty, blue screen" and renamed some plist files and directories. Got repeatable performance in that I could always log in but would only get a desktop background w/o menu/Dashboard/icons.
Booted to OS9 and copied the 10.4.11 COMBO package file to the Macintosh Hard Drive, rebooted with the Tiger install DVD, opened a bash terminal and installed the 10.4.11 COMBO package as per http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.html. No problems encountered with the installation.
Unplugged the machine for ~10 min at some point here. This apparently reset the clock, which I set via the date command.
Rebooted in Safe Mode. Actually got Dashboard and the Time and Finder magnifying glass portion of the top menu (upper right corner) to appear. Clicked on the Finder in Dashboard and got the "infinite spinning beachball" hang. Rebooted in Safe Mode and then got the featureless desktop background again. I haven't checked logs of the one semi-successful startup yet.
So - installing the 10.4.11 COMBO package DID NOT fix the problem.
I also find that networking is not being configured. This could be due the the renamed preferences files and directories.
What should I try next, short of CraigsList for a new/old machine?
Please help,
tcpasley -
OS X Won't completely boot - blue screen, pointer then nothing
(MBP with problem is 2.0GHz Core Duo 15" MBP. 1.5GB RAM)
As topic says, g/f woke her MBP pro up from sleeping to type an email. Shortly after opening the mac everything stopped responding. She held down the power button to turn off the mac and then turned it back on. MBP loads past grey Apple screen and shows the progress bar for loading OS X. Once progress bar dissapears then nothing, just a blue screen with the mouse pointer.
I have already done the following:
- Booted from Install DVD and ran disk utility. Verified Drive but no isssues. Verified and Repaired Permissions. Still didn't boot
- Booted in 'Safe' boot. Exact same problem
- Booted into Single User Mode and ran fsck -fy, no problems reported. I can browse the drive and see files etc.
- When I attempted to finish loading OS X from the command line I do remember seeing the following error: coreservicesd crashed. Googled but couldn't really find out anything I understood to help.
What are my options here. The MBP in question is unfortunately about 2 weeks past the Warranty date w/ no applecare but she may take in tomorrow regardless.
Can I use a firewire cable to connect the two macs and at least get the most important data off if we have to reinstall?
Thanks in advance for the help! That sounds like wake from Hibernation/Deep Sleep - there's no "progress bar" with a normal Boot, only a spinning grey wheel then the Desktop appears .
I believe this is the screen he is referring to.

Keychain fix for 10.5 in Updates tonight!
I just noticed there is a keychain fix download in UPDATE tonight... downloading now... it says recommended for 10.5 users.

FW fix for 10.4.10
All those experiencing troubles with their firewire audio interfaces since the 10.4.10 os update might find this very helpful. It solved the problems i was having with my FF400.
Posted by BobHofman on the ableton forum:
Hi,
No, Behringer does not show up in audio/midi setup 10.4.10
But I have my FCA202 working again!!! I still do not know what happened but this is what I have done.
Disconnected all my FW devices
Downloaded a program called Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/)
Then I downloaded the ComboInstaller 10.4.9 from the Apple site
With the help of Pacifist I only replaced a file called FWAudio.kext (an Extension File)
(it is strange though because 10.4.10 and 10.4.9 have the same modification date for this file)
Then i did the program Repair Permissions in Disc Utility, connected the FCA202 and to my surprise I could choose it again as an Audio Interface
So I think, but I am not sure, the file to replace is FWaudio.kext.
I read some other articles on the Apple forums that other Interfaces and even Airport Extreme Cards (Apple) have problems with 10.4.10
It is definitly NOT a fault in FCA202

-BobThank you so much for this post. I was having this exact issue: 10.5.6 update, coreservicesd crashing (because it was saying it was version 0). I tried the combo update because that has helped stuff in the past, with no luck. Again thank you, I couldn't find any other info out there and I really did not want to reinstall.
-
As usual I used software update to perform the latest update. My results were good on all my machines, except the most important, of course. I have read most of the discussions but so far no results. Here is where I'm at:
Originally crashed without completing update, screen was frozen.
On start-up I get apple logo and spinning wheel, fans startup after a minute or so and don't quit.
Computer will go into target disc mode. Outside systems see the computer, but no disc.
Holding down "c" on startup does not work: Logo and spinning and fans on.
Option startup shows disc, but won't go in, inserting and selecting Tiger Install disc gets a circle with a slash through it and spinning wheel, fans on again.
Nothing I do is letting me in to the DVD drive or the hard drive.
Any suggestions?I still have the original problem of No top menu, No dashboard, No desktop Icons after login.

Since the latest security update and since installing an Acard 6280, I've had wierdness.
Running two HDs. Quantum connected to onboard IDE and a Maxtor 160G connected to the Acard. When booted to the Quantum, I can open the Maxtor's Tiger volume desktop icon and then open the Apps folder, icons look normal. But when booted from the Maxtor...Finder>Applications...each app has .app appended. For a while, but not since running D.Warrior, the sidebar icons were whacky.
I've also had this deal: insert a CD and it may or may not show on the desktop; and may or may not eject. After a restart I can generally do both...for a while...then it happens again. If it's a music CD it may or may not open iTunes and, if iTunes opens, it may or may not show in iTunes.
And this deal: doesn't play music samples in Amazon like in the past. Amazon has two choices for the samples; R.Player and WMP. I have both installed. I used to be able to do either one. Now, if I choose R.P., an .exe.dpl (sic) file downloads; I have to minimize my Safari window; open the downloaded file; R.P. opens and plays the sample. If I choose WMP, a large, blank, browser window opens and after about 30 seconds the sample plays.
I have Macaroni running and I also run R.Permissions before and after each software update. I've also run R.Perm. and R.Disk from the install DVD. When I installed the Acard, I used CCC to clone to the Quantum (onboard IDE) and then cloned back after installing the Maxtor to the Acard. So, I can't tell if all this started due to the cloning, the Acard, or the software updates. Did not have this when running the Maxtor from the onboard IDE.
I've thought about doing an A&I to see what happens. Must admit I'm a little leary of using CCC to clone to a clone to a clone.
Any ideas greatly appreciated!
DavidDavid:
"Ouch". (That's acceptable language for what I was really thinking...)
If you review the system log for the Mar 30 07:15:02 console log entry, you'll probably get some more info. Additionally, you can also review the coreservicesd.crash.log. You can access these right from Console by launching it and clicking on the leftmost (Logs) icon in the Console toolbar, which will open a sidebar where you can easily highlight the logs to view them right in the Console window. (The crash log will be inside the Library/Logs/CrashReporter folder there.) You might also use Console to navigate to /var/log/cups/error_log and look at the entries there for the timeframe in question.
Hold on for a second opinion from somebody who knows what he's talking about, but if it were me, I'd jump the gun and be inclined to do an A & I, using the OS X 10.4.5 combined update. If I had a trouble-free clone, I'd clone it back to the errant system volume rather than doing an A & I, if the clone were up-to-date. My gut tells me that there's a system problem and those generally go from bad to worse if not found & fixed. I may be over-reacting though... (I tend to do this when stuff like this happens on my own Mac, and I wouldn't approach yours any differently.)
Gary
ps: Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. -
I've been having this problem for a couple of months, and it's getting worse.
Every now and then, everything will freeze, with no apparent reason. The weird thing is that I can still move the mouse, and any music I'm playing in the background will continue (it stops when it reaches the end of the song). It doesn't recover from this, and I have to force a restart.
The big problem is that when I restart it, it gets to the white screen with the grey apple logo and the spinning circle thing, and it hangs there. It keeps spinning, but it never gets any farther than that.
If I do a disk repair (and nothing else) in AppleJack, that fixes the problem until it freezes again. Does anybody know what I can do about this? I'll even go as far as reinstalling my operating system, but I'd prefer to not have to do that due to the sheer number of files I have that I need to keep (iTunes library, artwork, documents, Safari bookmarks, fonts, etc etc)
Is there a preference somewhere that may have gotten corrupted that I can turn off? Can I trash a folder and will it fix it? Any help at all would be great.I have 1.25 GB of RAM, and I have 21 GB of hard drive space free.
Looking through the crash logs I couldn't find much; the most recent crash information for anything was from the 27th. Here's an example, from coreservicesd.crash.log

For some reason, all of a sudden my 160gb ATV won't successfully sync TV shows that I have downloaded into iTunes. The sync progress bar just sits there and barely moves for hours, and then it gives up. Anything I can do to fix this?
