Correct File Size-Web Photo Gallery?

I've optimized my photos in photoshop and now its time to display the photos at their best quality on the web.
I'm curious how working photographers proceed at this point. What methods are used to get your final image optimized for best quality viewing on the web?
My understanding is that maximum file dimensions should be in the 800 x 600 range, with a file size not much larger than 100k.
Any reason to look at larger file sizes?
Does it matter if a web site is Flash or not? (As it pertains to file size's)
Panoramas:
Say I have a file with dimensions of 7968 x 2342. Is there a method for determining the correct size to display a pano on the web ?
It would seem they have to be larger than 800 X 600 to retain the feel of a Panorama?
Ok poor out your secrets here ..heh..
Thanks for any help
George

hi george (and buko)
i'm pondering the same questions right now.
althouggh i have been creating websites and wrestling with these issues since 1999. ive spent lots of time and energy post-producing my 2:3 monochromes, and its frustrating to only publish something that will fit
in a 800x600 potential monitor screen. even 1024x768 is significantly reduced for real viewing space, when we allow for the browser status bar, address bar, nav buttons etc. the most recent survey info on have found on the net seems to suggest that 1024x768 is now the most common
screen resolution in use. however a 2:3 image, of 1000 width is still to tall to comfortably fit in the window of (firefox) at that size.
ive got used to my emac at 1280 x 960 =]
so it all depends on perceived user-base i guess.
is your content aimed at the general webpublic or at fellow photogs, creatives who may well have large/huge monitors.
i'm going to try a 900 width.
best
matt

  • CS5 - Where has Web Photo Gallery gone? I use it all the time to prepare galleries for Dreamweaver.

Having just upgraded from CS2 to CS5, I cannot find Web Photo Gallery (previously File, Automate, Web Photo Gallery).
This was very useful to prepare galleries of images sent to me by our group members in all sizes, so I could send all the gallery files straight into Dreamweaver for uploading to our website.

Thanks, "obvious" always works for me...
In CS2 they offered thumbnails of the gallery styles. Hitting Refresh Preview in CS5 requires the photos to load the gallery. Doesn't take too long, but the other was quick and simple.

  • Web Photo Gallery help

I have a couple of questions about using Bridge to make web photo galleries.
    - is there a way to make the galleries so the pictures retain the same file names as the original pictures?
    Here's a sample gallery I made; http://www.bobcoulter.com/ps5/gallery/content/_1226902297_large.html
The first pictures file name is; 110108_0023.jpg but in the gallery if you copy the picture it's now called _1226902297.jpg
    - is there a way to force ALL the files Bridge uses to make the gallery so they are lower case file names?  i.e. cutName.js so that it's cutname.js etc.

IMO when Adobe removed PDF and contact sheet support along with Photoshop Web Galleries  from Photoshop menu File>Automate>Web Photo Gallery... and they added an output module to the Bridge for PDF support and a much less customizable Web Photo Galleries they took a giant step backwards and short changed their users.
However you can still download some of the removed features like Contact Sheets and the old Photo Web Gallery and install them into CS5  how much longer will they provide them no one knows.
You can also find some Photoshop Scripts that can be used to generate Web Photo Galleries. Most are written in javascript and not converted to binary so you can download them and if you know a little javascript you can add anything you want.
Perhaps in some future release the Bridges output module support will catch up with the old support that is in Photoshop CS3.
The scripts I have modified can be downloaded.  Here are some examples hover the mouse cursor over the bottom of your browser's window in the WS-Slideshow galleries to see its tool bar. I fit my images within a UXGA display 1600x1200 pixels.

  • Is the Automate/Web Photo Gallery function gone from CS5?

I am currently operating a trial download of Photoshop CS5. I was surprised to see the "File > Automate > Web Photo Gallery" function missing from Photoshop CS5. Is that true, or has it been moved to another location?

    Jeffry, Chris Cox,
At our studio we use the Web Gallery with Feedback option for our clients to review images, make selections and comments.
I hope we don't lose access to this with an upgrade to CS5.
It seems to me that having that capability within Photoshop makes sense, but if it is being ported to Bridge I hope, at least, that it will be well supported (which it wasn't while in PS).
As a tool to support a user's web design, Flash has several drawbacks not the least of which is that it is opaque to search engine indexing bots.
One thing I would hope Adobe could fix in the Gallery with Feedback option is a problem in which if a client of ours is using the gallery to give feedback, even though they click "Save Feedback" on every image, if they close the gallery window, all comments and selections are lost. We had a client who was reviewing 400 images. She had gotten through close to 300 of them, saving feedback all along, when she decided to come back to the project a little later. Closing the browser window lost all of her comments and selections. Tools like this are important to our business relations with our clients and I would hope they would be integrated into Adobe's imaging products, but they shouldn't be an afterthought – they need to be well designed, user customizable, and up to date with web standards.

  • Web Photo Gallery legacy files CS6 PS

Before purchasing PS CS6, I want to confirm that I will still be able to load the legacy Web Photo Galleries on the program. Anyone know? Thx.

I need something that will write in the description that I have in the meta data area for each file.  That's the most work for me and hoping bridge or ps will generate that for me.
Yes that was a good feature of Photoshop  Web Photo Gallery feature as was it ability to stamp you with you Copyright Info..  Unfortunately Adobe did not implement that in their  lame Bridge output module.  The Web Galleries that it can generate has very limited customization options.  While it may generate SimpleViewer Flash Web galleries the can easy display descriptions Adobe did not choose to implement image description.
An Adobe employee named Jeff Tranberry wrote a Photoshop Script to generate SimpleViewer Galleries that can be downloaded from the SimpleViewer Web Site.   I modified that script to use image files meta-data like Photoshop Web Photo Gallery feature did for a couple of Flash Gallery viewers.  The two I use are SimpleViewer and WS-Slideshow.  What nice about Flash Galleries viewers is they will resize images to fit into the user browsers window you do not need to have multiple sizes of your images on your web server.  A user can resize their browsers window to see your image larger or smaller.  You choos the image quality a can see most of my images are quite large fitten to 1600x1200. WS-Slideshow  Example http://www.mouseprints.net/albums/ Note: I hide WS-Slideshow menu bar hover the mouse over the bottom of an image to use it. Some albums have discription and other options.
However Apple mobile iOS devices do not have Flash support and I sure more mobile platforms will loose Flash support for Adobe is not developing Flash for mobile devices any more.  I do not care some mobile devices can not view my images.
My free Gallery Photoshop Script and other Photoshop packages can be downloaded from my web site click the link below.

  • Can't create web photo gallery with modified RAW files

I can use CS-2 to create a web photo gallery using unmodified RAW files, this seems to work fine.
However, after I tweak the exposure of a RAW file and a .xmp file has been created, if I try to create a web photo gallery, the program goes through the motions but no thumbnails or (bigger) jpg files are created. The resulting web photo gallery pages are just filled with broken link icons.
    What's up?
    Windows 2000
    Photoshop CS-2
    Cannon RAW files (.CR2 extensions)
    Thanks,
    Mark

I believe it may be to do with the sidecar files. My girlfriend has similar issues on Windows XP.
I have tried to recreate the problem here (on Mac OSX) but it all works fine for me, so i can't fully test it, but here is what i believe may be happening....
The sidecar file has the same name as the actual raw file (except the extension of course), so when the web gallery script is processing it, it does the raw file, then overwrites by trying to process the xmp file as an image, but of course it can't and then you end up with no image file in your thumbnail, or image directories in the web gallery for that image.
    Two options you can try...
    1) go into bridge and select the images to process in there (xmp files shouldn't show up there) and then use the Tools/Photoshop menu to access the WGB and choose 'Selected Bridge Images' as the source. (this has been tested successfully on win xp)
    2) in the camera raw plugin, go into preferences and change the 'sidecar xmp' option to 'camera raw database'. You will then probably need to delete any sidecar files for the folder you wish to process and reapply your raw adjustments. If the problem is what i suspect (as above) this should also work, though i haven't been able to test.
Obviously you don't need to worry about the 'down rezzing' mentioned above as the web gallery builder should already be doing this for you...unless you changed it.

  • Web Photo gallery larger than 800x600?

After I create a web photo gallery the verticals need to be scrolled. Any way to make the photo gallery larger than 800x600. Most people have larger screens now.
I have Golive and cant seem to adjust the size there either, not an expert.
    Doug

Take the Bridge-created index.html page (and associated folders and files) and copy them to your Dreamweaver site folder, making sure not to overwrite your existing index page or folders - you may want to rename the Bridge-created files something else (add a 2 to the name or whatever). Then open the Bridge created index.html file with Dreamweaver, switch to code view, and then select all the code and copy it to your clipboard. Now open up your own Dreamweaver page (or create a new page in your Dreamweaver managed site) and switch to code view, select all, and paste the previously copied code into it. Make sure to double check that any URL's point correctly to where your resources are (i.e. make sure that wherever your photos are called in the code point to the folder and image where that particular folder is located within the Dreamweaver site).
    Hope this helps.

  • Using CS3 Web Photo Gallery Control Panel in Bridge CS4?

I found where the styles are located in the library, and it doesn't look like the old templates will work with the new Output feature of Bridge. I want to use my old templates from CS3 that I have customized, and would like to use them with Bridge. I have installed the extra Goodies, but they will only work through Photoshop, not Bridge.
Is there a way to have Bridge>Tools>Photoshop bring up the legacy version control panel for the Web Photo Gallery?
    Thank you:)

    Hi Paul,
I'm not a Lightroom user, but the new Web Photo Galleries that come in CS4 are in Bridge. They are Lightroom templates, so there's probably not much difference. I just tried building a gallery in CS4 Bridge with 35 files, and I could not preview more than 10 either through Bridge or in a browser by pressing the preview button. The only way to preview the entire gallery before uploading was by saving the folder, then opening the index file in a browser.
Web Photo Galleries can be created in Photoshop and Bridge CS4 just like they were in previous versions of Photoshop and Bridge. You do need to configure it using the optional Goodies files since it is not part of the initial installation. It's real easy. The link I posted above has more information. Here it is again:
    http://generatex.com/cs4.html
If you do that, you'll have the best of both worlds. You'll have the option of creating web photo galleries with html templates in Bridge or Photoshop CS4, previewing them easily (regardless of size), and have the option of using the new Lightroom flash templates in Bridge CS4.

    Bob,
Thanks for answering.  I need to create a Web Photo Gallery so I can upload thumbnails and full-size pictures to my website and have viewers be able to download the full-sized pictures.  The Flash version does not permit downloading and requires that you use one of the provided templates.  It appears that Photoshop Elements 8 is a downgrade from Photoshop Elements 2.0 in this respect.  Is there any way to accomplish what I want to do with Photoshop Elements 8.0?
By the way, I really like your video tutorial on the Adobe website.

  • CS3 Web Photo Gallery index.htm renaming

I'm not sure if there is a way to change this but if any one know please let me know. I working to modify one of the templates for the Web Photo Gallery, and am wondering if there is a way to designate in the template what to name the index page besides index.htm or index.html.
I'm working to create a site that will have many photo galleries. And while it does work to have each gallery in its own sub directory with the main gallery page named index.htm. I would prefer to have the main gallery page renamed during the automation process for easier archiving.
Let me know if anyone know if this is possible.

    >Anyway, renaming the files should not pose a problem, if you do full links. I just wouldn't do it for web galleries created automatically from PS.
There are could be hundreds of subpages in a gallery and I'm trying to avoid going back and redoing the link to each of the main pages. Every subpage points to the main page or the index page that PS creates. I can go and manually rename the index page but then the home button that is generated during the automation on each of the sub pages needs to be changed as well. I'm trying to avoid this.
Let me explain what I'm trying to accomplish. In the root of the domain I plan on having my index page (with a brief description about the company). Then I plain to have a few other pages including a gallery page. This is going to be the main page for all my galleries. Images will be places here that will link to the main page of each of the galleries that are created. Also on the root there will be a folder named "XYZ". This is were all the galleries will be placed under there own sub folders.

  • How to have more than one Bridge Web Photo Gallery in a site

I'm having a problem inserting more than one bridge web photo gallery in my site. I have thumbnails of different jobs and when clicked I want a new page to load with all the images of that job. I have one thumbnail linked to one of the galleries and I made another gallery and can't find the code to change to link it to the new html gallery. When the page loads it shows the first gallery I made instead of the new gallery.
    Example:
I made a gallery of a deck job and on my photo page there is a thumbnail. When clicked it brings up the deck.html photo gallery made in bridge cs4. Good!
Now, I made a gallery of an outdoor fireplace and on my photo page there is a thumbnail. When clicked it should load the photo gallery of the outdoor fireplace. It loads the gallery of the deck instead.
I understand that the code needs to be changed to link to the new files. I changed the "resource" folder for the outdoor fireplace to "resource2" and changed the code script src="resources" to script src="resources2" and it did not work
I suspect that I need to change the code that points to group.xml and rename the new photo gallery group.xml to group2.xml so it will find the one in my resources2 folder, but I can't find the code anywhere.
Any help would be great. Also, if there is a better way of doing this let me know?
    Thanks

Maybe I can explain this better....
the group.xml file has the information for what images to load. When previewing the outdoor fireplace web gallery "of.html" it loads the "deck.html" web gallery. I believe this is because in one of the files it is requesting the info from the group.xml file from the resourses folder. I need to find where the code is that directs it to the group.xml and change it to group2.xml and rename that group.xml file for "of.html" to group2.xml in the resourses2 folder.

  • The Web photo gallery does not work in Dreamweaver!

I made a web photo gallery in photo shop using CS3.  The destination folder is the web site I'm using it in.  It links OK in the rollover image and will work if you click on it(swf_file) in the site file, but it will not show any pictures when I try to preview it with a browser or load it on the remote site. It loads the file but all the images are whited out.   This is very frustrating and it must be something simple...please advise...Thank You..Thagoodsport

What kind of a response are you looking for with a post like that, seriously? Change this or that in your unprovided code? Use this or that gallery, which may be the gallery you're already using. We don't know because you haven't mention specifics, provided any code, or any other relevant information to produce a helpful response. All you've said is you click a link and it's white. Kudos.
We're not mind readers and no one is looking over your shoulder watching what you're doing. Get it together... and when you do, post a link so we can see what you're talking about. jeez.

  • Problem Uploading Web Photo Gallery in DW

I'm a newbie at this, so please bare with me. I've been at this same problem for 3 days & I'm finally breaking down & asking for help. I want to be as helpful as possible here, so I'm just going to give as much info as I can, so I'm sorry in advance if some of it doesn't matter.
I created my web photo gallery through PS & am putting them into DW with the iFrame. My connection works just fine when I preview it, as I can jump from page to page, seeing all of my galleries. I'm been able to put my pages up, but the galleries do not come up. I keep getting the error 404 message up in all of my frames.
I have all of my galleries in one file, with each specific gallery in a sub-folder with all of the attachment files.
I've tried every combination I can think of when it comes to my local root folder and default images folder to see if I just had the wrong folder selected. I'm more so thinking it would have to be the DIF if it were anything like this, because the LRF has to be the main folder. I've tried to C&P the gallery file in several different folders, use it as my DIF, put it, & see if it works, & it doesn't. I tried to upload the galleries themselves through my web server (host monster) and also cyberduck.
I've read everything I could find, & I read that I needed to link up the index.html to the page I'm building. But I assumed I already did that, other wise I wouldn't be able to preview it right? If I still need to do this, where should I go into specifically to do this?
I also read I should link up the files from the navigation system in DW. Where would I go about doing this?
As you can see, I'm pretty lost.

    http://www.rickyhavlik.com/galleries/grant%20park/index.htm
That page is not on the server - did you upload it?  By the way, it's not a good idea to use spaces in your file/pathnames for the web.
The page is just not where you have told the browser to look for it here -
    <iframe height="600" width="600" marginheight="250" marginwidth="250" src="galleries/grant park/index.htm"</iframe>
