Correct Sata Drive for External Storage on DVR

Approximately eight months ago my DVR received a software upgrade that included the ability to add external storage. Not wanting to settle for just 1 TB of storage using one of the Verizon approved external drives, I chose, instead, to buy a WD20EARS 2TB Green SATA drive that the salesperson at CompUSA said would work with my STB. I made it into an ESATA drive by installing it in an enclosure. The STB saw the drive, formatted it and then added it as external storage.
Unfortunately, it never performed correctly. It was constantly plagued with long pauses in the audio followed by video pixilation - very often to the point of not being able to watch either a live or recorded program. I talked to FIOS support several times and was offered a new STB/DVR each time. I kept thinking that it was a software problem and put up with it until a few weeks ago. . One night it got so bad that I ejected the external drive and went back to using the smaller internal drive. Surprise! NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER!. It was then that I decided that the problem had to be the external drive.
After some Internet research and a call to Western Digital, I determined that WD20EARS that I had purchased was the wrong type of hard drive and it would never have worked properly. It was NOT designed for streaming video but for data storage. The correct Western Digital drive can be found in the WD AV-GP family (AV=Audio Visual), specifically designed to work with PVR/DVR's, STB's, and video surveillance systems. The drives essentially have no error correction built in and thus have no problem with minor streaming glitches coming from the STB as it buffers the transmission to the drive. Since they have no error correction, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they be used for DATA CRITICLE applications. I ended up going with a WD20EURS drive (2TB) that I installed in the enclosure. It's been up for over 24 hours and is performing flawlessly. Sure wish I had investigated sooner

With the Camera Connection Kit you can input data from an external USB device to the iPad, but you cannot write from the iPad to the connected drive.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Going from xp to windows 7 64 bit using an external drive for music storage

    Greetings Techies!
I hope you all are well.
I need to move my iTunes from an XP machine to Windows 7 64 bit. On the XP machine I am using an external drive for music storage and the iTunes database is stored on the internal drive. I am looking for advice on how to transfer all of this over to my new Windows 7 64 bit machine. I know iTunes can be picky about everything and I don’t want to take and chances and loose my playlists or music.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Blessings,
    paul

You are right about it being picky. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and was forced to format my drive. I had all the music backed up, but when I imported it, I have 2 or 3 copies of some songs, art work missing, and have lost my playlists. I hope someone responds to your question, because I could use similar help! Best of luck to ya . . .

  • What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

  • Use time capsule drive for mass storage instead of time machine

I'm considering buying a new Airport Extreme with the time capsule drive.  I'd interested to know if I can use the built in drive as an additional HD verses using it for a back up drive with time machine?  I'm aware I can plug in a USB external drive for network storage, but would like to use the built one for storage as well.  Anyone know if this is possible?

I just got a 2TB time capsule a few days ago to use as a "poor man's file server" for my iTunes library. Bob makes valid points, and I am aware of the limitations, but I think it will meet my needs for awhile. I am in the process of ripping a large DVD collection and my iTunes library is over 350gb which was starting to feel crowded on my MBA's 512gb SSD.
I have plenty of external USB and thunderbolt drives, but I wanted wireless access to the libary anywhere in the house. With the AC wireless on my 2013 MBA, I wouldn't really classify the time capsule as "quite slow", I'm seeing about 30MB/s for FInder file copies. I have a 1TB USB2 WD Passport drive and the speed is very comparable - about 35MB/s. Sure, it's not as fast as my thunderbolt drive at 190MB/s or SSD at 700MB/s, but it seems to work well for my content (I don't use HD video in iTunes).
The only noticeable issue is that the TC disk spins down almost immediately if it isn't in use, so you get a lag of a few seconds if you pause a movie for a minute. And it takes longer to start iTunes of course. For me, these were acceptable trade-offs to allow my library to grow to 2TB without any directly connected external storage.
I wanted an AC router regardless and the TC gives me a wireless disk for $100 more. In the future I can always add a "real" media server and let the TC do backups. But for now I'm happy with the way it works.

Is there a performance difference between GPT and MBR? If GPT is better, I do not mind formatting the drive with it.

    Hi,
There was a serious BIOS/UEFI problem with that SSD . Perhaps this thread will save you some headaches. Someone is recomending shutting off Rapid Boot in the setup, which would probable mean little with a SSD, anyway.
I read through this, and it looks like the problem was fixed in a BIOS update, which I plan to do. However, it also seems like Intel Rapid Start is not even worth it in the first place, as sleep consumes almost no power at all.

What is the Highest Capacity SATA Drive for a REV A G5 (SP 1.8 with 8 RAM slots), it came with a 160, I know 250s work... will anything higher?

but I am curious if I could go higher

    (Rep points given)

Hitachi 400GB was trouble even on SeriTek controllers. Like the early 7K250, it was not a native SATA drive. Early SATA drives were often using Marvel or some other bridge on PATA drives. The T7K250 and 7K500, or Maxtor are fine. WD has some new drives, one model is optimized for RAID-only firmware.
Whatever happened to just plug in and go, anyway?

  • Sata Drives for MP 2010

    I want to buy 2 2TB Sata drives for a MP 2010 6 cores.
Should I buy Sata or Sata II (faster?). Compatibility?
    Any good/fast/trust brand/model recommendation?
Any european online store to make this purchase?
    Thank you very much.

I empathize-- I live in Alaska-- I'm not part of the '48 contiguous states'. Shipping is much more expensive to Alaska although we don't have sales taxes because we are soaked with oil tax revenues. This year's Permanent Fund Revenues (money in the mail) will amount to about 1500 dollars for each family member . . .
Hard drives aren't heavy. Get a shipping estimate. Macsales just sent me some overnight ram and it was cheap (at least the shipping was). Ironically we got a package from UK yesterday too and it was cheap because it wasn't heavy.
Enjoy your new computer. I hope it will work well for you.

  • External Hard Drive for Video Storage

I am ready to move my DVD collection to harddrive and plan to use my Intel Mini as primary interface (other Macs on network). I assume I want a 1 TB or larger HD. Any suggestions as to the best drives to consider? I currently have a 500 ministack II connected by firewire as my primary drive. Do I want to add another FW 400 drive, USB2 or an ethernet drive. What will be best for storing a collection of 100 or more DVDs withe xpansion capabilities?

    Hi-
External housings, with firewire interface, and the Oxford chipset are a good way to go. The housing allows one to choose drives and size easily, and change drives as needed. Firewire interface provides reliable data transfer, at excellent rates (speed), and have the bonus of being bootable, as opposed to USB interface. The Oxford chipset is important, as it provides the most reliable operation, and best compatibility.
Housings with combinations of interfaces are also good, providing the maker and chipset are reliable. A housing with firewire 800, firewire 400, and USB 2.0, provide a good range of connection options. A fourth option, but requires a controller card with external eSATA ports, is the eSATA interface. This will allow use of SATA drives, and allow the benefit of SATA transfer rates.
Housings with these specs can be found at OWC. The following all come with your choice of drive size:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/
For just the housing (you buy the drive separately):

  • Partition external hard drive for photo storage

My iMac from 2006 is down to 16 gb of free space (out of 500). I have two 1 TB drives from Seagate and made full backups via Time Machine. The first drive is now unplugged and am considering locating outside of my home in case of fire, theft, etc. The second drive is connected via USB constantly synching with TM. Curious about partitioning as I would like to divide the 1 TB external drive in half. The first 500 GB would be dedicated to TM backup and the other 500 GB would be for picture galleries I want quick access to then delete the rest on my internal drive.
My goals are two fold: 1.) Backup data, 2.) Free up space on my internal HD so the iMac and Lion will run faster.
Question: Do I need to format the drive and start over outside TM then go to Disk Utility and partion in half? If I'm right so far would I then open TM to backup to the first partition? Ultimately I want to manage storage balances between my internal drive and external device. Since the internal is filled up I want to spill data into the external drive.

I'm not really sure I understand what you mean, but it's OK as long as you understand that you can't back up a drive to itself. You should also know that one backup is not enough to be safe.
As for your original question, you can usually add a partition to a drive without erasing it. Follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under the heading "Create new partitions on a disk":
Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk
Obviously the backup volume must be at least large enough to hold one copy of all the data you want to back up to it, plus about 10% of padding required by Time Machine. How much larger it needs to be depends on the rate of data turnover, and on how far back you want the snapshot history to go. There are no valid "rules of thumb" that apply to all cases.
