Correct SDRAM, and what is the ram ceiling in a Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

Hello all,
Thanks for helping me with my optical drive question earlier. I now would like to ask about ram. At present my G4 1GHz is running OSX Tiger on 256Mb ram. Things run ok, but they could definitely be better.
My G4 is one of the older Quicksilver models and uses SDRAM as opposed to DDR. Specifically it requires:
SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz
At first I thought I could simply transfer the larger ram sticks from my old G4 400MHz sawtooth, but the Quicksilver is very picky and doesn’t like any of them. I thought it would be backwards compatible and just slow everything down to the slowest speed memory stick (PC100 in this case), but no... it just didn’t like them full stop! (on a side note, I’ve checked and all 3 memory slots on the Quicksilver work fine, nothing defective there).
Once again working on a shoestring I would like to ram up that memory to 1Gb or 1.5Gb as I have a disc for Leopard and I would like to upgrade to that sometime soon.
So, looking on eBuyer I can see what’s described as ‘Generic’ 512MB PC133 168pin Extra Value SDRAM for £11.99 which I see as great value (here's the link). The only thing I cannot tell is if its the CL=3 variety. This means two questions:
1) Is 1.5Gb the max ram limit for a January 2002 G4 Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, or is that simply Apple’s ram ceiling at the time? Have people put in say, 2.5Gb on these machines?
2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines? I really can’t see why not, but I’m not that knowledgeable either.
Many thanks for your help.

The QS didn't like PC100 because it has a 133mhz system bus. You can use PC133 in a machine with a 100mhz bus, but not conversely.
The max RAM is still three 512MB modules for a total of 1.5GB. That model isn;t one that can exceed the original specs.
2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines?
Unless identified as suitable for Mac, most of the generic stuff turns out to be for PC. The site you linked does not provide enough support info, and Googling the "manufacturer's part number" doesn't lead to a manufacturer site, just a bunch of circular references back to the seller's site. Suspicious
You should probably call the seller and ask for someone who knows Mac RAM. In addition to being unbuffered and non-parity, it needs to be low-density.
With such a paucity of key Mac metrics, that listing makes be very nervous. I know RAm is expensive in teh UK based on a lot of psots all over Apple Discussions, but you have to find someone who knows Mac RAM.
There is a great free tool for checking whether any Mac can handle more RAM than the original specs showed. It's the MacTracker database and is here:
http://www.mactracker.ca
I couldn't work these forums without it. It shows all the facts and specs of the machine, and always indicates if the original RAM specs can be exceed. For example, for the USB 2.0 eMacs, its Memory entry is:
2.0 GB (Actual) 1.0 GB (Apple)
Very handy.

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • Whisch one is correct for undo_retention and what is the difference

    Hi ALL,
whisch one is correct for undo_retention and what is the difference
    SQL> select max(maxquerylen) from v$undostat;
    MAX(MAXQUERYLEN)
    6060
    SQL> select max(maxquerylen) from dba_hist_undostat;
    MAX(MAXQUERYLEN)
    17221

    hi Afzal,
you can use begin_time & end_time of v$undostat -> to specify the time interval of your interest.
A brief note, of what you have discussed here:
    maxquerylen
Identifies the length of the longest query (in seconds) executed in the instance during the period. You can use this statistic to estimate the proper setting of the UNDO_RETENTION initialization parameter. The length of a query is measured from the cursor open time to the last fetch/execute time of the cursor. Only the length of those cursors that have been fetched/executed during the period are reflected in the view.
V$UNDOSTAT is dynamic, showing current stats.
DBA_HIST_UNDOSTAT displays the history of histograms of statistical data to show how well the system is working. The available statistics include undo space consumption, transaction concurrency, and length of queries executed in the instance. This view contains snapshots of V$UNDOSTAT
    hope it help.

  • ThreadOpt values - is it possible to set them and what are the ranges?

    Hi there,
I have a problem on my TestStand 4.2 platform, with test step result, formed and received from called external sequences results. In my Main sequence, in Post-Expression I defined condition, according to which the "Step.Result.Status" is passed or failed, and it works. But the problem is that in Status Expression field there is following statement: "(Step.Result.Status == "Done" && (Step.TS.SData.ThreadOpt == 0 || Step.TS.SData.ThreadOpt == 3)) ? "Passed" : Step.Result.Status". After deep search in the user manual, I found that (Note from "Expression Tab - Step Properties Dialog Box"): "Certain types of steps, such as Numeric Limit Tests, Multiple Numeric Limit Tests, String Value Tests, Pass/Fail Tests, and Statement steps, reserve one or more of these expressions to perform operations specific to the type of step or a substep performs the operation. In these cases, you cannot use the expressions the step type reserves, which appear dimmed on the tab."
Now, my problem is that at this specific step I call to an external sequence, which returns results and it is correct, but if these results, compared to expected are not the same, my step in the main sequence fails. Which is OK. But when the final report is generated I see there "Number of Tests Failed: 0", which is not OK. Since I can't change the "Step.Result.Status == Done", which comes from the external sequence, I thought that may be there is a place to change the "Step.TS.SData.ThreadOpt" and this way to cause to main sequence to correctly report "Failed Tests <> 0"???
Does anyone has an idea whether it is possible to set this the ThreadOpt value and what is the accepted range?
Your feedbacks and inputs are highly appreciated.
    Stephan

    Hello Doug,
I didn't think I was modifying any hidden properties.  It's just configuring a sequence call step when you add it to the sequence.  The "Execution Options" are clearly shown in a dropdown menu on the Module tab.  I was just pointing out that this seems to be what sets the ThreadOpt variable.

Maybe I misunderstood. When you said "My normal process is to set it to 1, but based on this info, it needs to be either set to None or Use Remote Computer if you want anything other than "Done" to be returned." I thought you meant that you were setting the property directly rather than setting your sequence call steps to "New Thread" with the combobox.

  • RAID: What is it and what are the benefits and How to Setup?

I was wondering what RAID is? How do you set it up? And what are the benefits of having dual hard drives setup in RAID?
I have a powermac G5 (quad 2.5ghz/16gb RAM/80gb SSD & 1tb HD) and I want to setup my SSD and HD in RAID...would that be wise? Thanks guys!

    Hi-
One of the best ways to reduce a RAIDs performance is to mix drives.
Mixing dissimilar drive types should be a shortcut to disaster.
I would rethink the drives to use for a RAID.
The most reliable RAID will be from RAID certified hard drives of the same make and capacity.
After that, you get into software RAID vs Hardware RAID, which both have drawbacks, the latter being price due to the required controller cards and external housing needed for all the drives.
Hardware RAID will allow for better performance, and allow for use of a RAID 5 or RAID 6 to build in redundancy to protect in case of a drive failure within the set, without losing the entire set.
A SSD RAID can really offer some blistering speeds.
    I think possibly a bit much for a G5.
With software RAID, a two drive RAID 0 as scratch for video or graphics work can greatly increase render performance of those respective softwares.
A two drive boot RAID 0 with 2 WD Velociraptors can increase OS X responsiveness.
All two drive RAIDs suffer from the need for a robust backup, making a third and fourth drive needed to create a RAID 0+1.

  • What are the versions of BW and what is the difference between them

what are the versions of BW and what is the difference between them

    Hi Reddy,
    SAP BIW 2.0a, 2.0b
                   3.0a, 3.b
                   3.1c
3.5  and Now BI 7 are some of the versions.
Major difference between BW3.5 and BI 7.0 versions:
    1. In Info sets now you can include Infocubes as well.
    2. The Remodeling transaction helps you add new key figure and characteristics and handles historical data as well without much hassle. This is only for info cube.
    3. The BI accelerator (for now only for Infocubes) helps in reducing query run time by almost a factor of 10 - 100. This BI accelerator is a separate box and would cost more.
    4. The monitoring has been improved with a new portal based cockpit. Which means you would need to have an EP guy in ur project for implementing the portal.
    5. Search functionality hass improved!! You can search any object. Not like 3.5
    6. Transformations are in and routines are passé! Yes, you can always revert to the old Tcodes.
    7. The *Data Warehousing Workbench *replaces the Administrator Workbench.
    8. Functional enhancements have been made for the Data Store object:
New type of Data Store object, Enhanced settings for performance optimization of Data Store objects.
    9. The transformation replaces the transfer and update rules.
    10. New authorization objects have been added
11.*Remodeling *of Info Providers supports you in Information Lifecycle Management.
12 the DataSource: There is a new object concept for the DataSource .
Options for direct access to data have been enhanced.
From BI, remote activation of Data Sources is possible in SAP source systems.
    13. There are functional changes to the Persistent Staging Area (PSA).
    14. BI supports real-time data acquisition.
    15. SAP BW is now known formally as BI (part of NetWeaver 2004s). It implements the Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW). The new features/ Major differences include:
    a) Renamed ODS as Data Store.
    b) Inclusion of Write-optimized Data Store which does not have any change log and the requests need no activation
    c) Unification of Transfer and Update rules
    d) Introduction of "end routine" and "Expert Routine"
    e) Push of XML data into BI system (into PSA) without Service API or Delta Queue
    f) Introduction of BI accelerator that significantly improves the performance.
    g) Load through PSA has become a must. Info Packages are used to load data upto PSA only.
You need to create DTP to update data from PSA to Data Target.
    Regards,
    Ram.

  • Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting?

Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting? Please suggest if there is any best prctice documentation that can be referred.

    Hi Henrik
depend on what you need or what your security policy says for my lab gear i use 60 minutes. because i know how can access this. if you have gear outside in insecure space set it to a minimum or disable the console. everybody how can access your gear can break in. simple restart and boot w/o config. and you are in.
it realy depends how secure is your space and how much security you need.
and than the settings for policy have to match, what sec do you have if your console login and logout is secure. but when you restart you can simple break in by starting w/o config and than load it.

Do you understand how to make the Slider work using code to read its value?  You will need to look into that in order to do this.
What you can do is have the yello rectangle be a movieclip that sits over the red rectangle and use the Slider to control the yellow rectangle's alpha property from 0 to 1.  That way the yellow will gradually fade as you slide.
What you will then need  to do is figure out how to make the number of dots that appear reduce from 15 to 8 over the same range of the slider.  You need to use the fractional value from the slider to decide how many dots either appear or do not appear.
You should not start new postings for the same topics that you arlready have postings for.  Doing so in the future might result in them being removed.
