Correct software to upgrade Mac OS X Version 10 5 8

A family member has given my daughter their "old" mac. I would like to purchase the correct software to upgrade it to the highest spec I possibly can. I am very nervous because I am a bit of a technophobe and don't want to buy the wrong thing!
Can you offer some advice please.

Hi
Here is required info:
Mac OS X
Version 10.5.8
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2SDRAM
Startup Disk (Not Required)
Graphics etc (Required) Nothing showing - or should I click More Info for that?
etc (Not Required)
Also, just to say that she wants to be able to run Sibelius on it - for Music A Level.
Hope you can help and thank you for your time.
Many thanks
Louise

  • What will happen to my previously installed software after upgrading mac to OS X Yosemite?

I'm new to mac OS and I want to upgrade my mac from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite. I want to know if that upgrade would affect my previously installed software (e.g Wolfram Mathematica).
Do I have to re-install those software after upgrading to Yosemite?

When the installer is downloaded from the App Store, it is a good idea to make a copy of it with a different name and in another location from the Applications folder, as the original disappears after running.
The installation will leave the user account intact, with your apps and files. However, not all apps will be updated for Yosemite and to save future problems it is advisable to go to the developers' websites and get the latest version, before you make the move.
I see from Roaring Apps, that Wolfram Mathematica may not yet be ready for Yosemite.

  • Upgrading Mac OS X version 10.5.8 to get to Mac OS X version 10.6.8

I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2.4 Ghz, Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and I need to get to Mac OS X version 10.6.8 so that I can install iTunes 10.7 so that I can use my  iPhone 5 – does anybody know the easiest route to get there? Any risk of losing data on the way? Many thanks!

Get SL install disc from Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. AFAIK, no data loss risk, since the installer just replaces OS components and basic Apple apps. However, when upgrading, it's always advisable to have a restorable backup. See these for details:

  • What can i do?? Mac OS X Version 10.5.8

My wife has a vin macbook (13-inch) late 2007 with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8!!!!
But its really slow and i am trying to find out how i can make it faster?
Can i upgrade Mac OS X Version 10.5.8??
If yes which one should i choose?
Finally can i upgrade any hardware part(RAM), to make her mac faster?
    Thank you!

First, increase the RAM to not less than 4GB.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • Can we upgare mac os x version from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6?

can we upgrade mac os x version from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 or higer version/

All pre-August 28, 2009 MacBooks with 1 GB of RAM support a minimum of 10.6.8, and can be upgraded to 10.6 via this store purchase:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Getting to 10.6.8 is covered by this tip, which should be read before you even install 10.6:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If you are interested in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, read this tip carefully:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
You do not need to purchase 10.5 to get to 10.6 or later.

  • I have Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 what do I need to do to upgrade to the latest version of software??

I have Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 what do I need to do to upgrade to the latest version of software??

Depends what MacBook version you have.
Go to  > About This Mac > More Info > hardware overview (should open at that usually).
Check the model identifier (MacBook4.1 or similar)
    Check Processer Name
    Processer speed
    Memory
    Specs for Snow Leopard (10.6.x)
    And for Lion (10.7.x);
Note that the memory quoted in those specs is absolute minimum for each OS - 106 really needs at least 2GB and Lion 4GB

The iPhone 5 requires iTunes 10.7 or later and iTunes 10.7 requires OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). If your profile is correct it looks like you need to update your OS X on you Mac. You can contact Apple and purchase the software from them.

  • My MacBook Pro is running on an older version of Mac OS X but will not allow me to upgrade to a newer version

My MacBook Pro is running on a 10.5.8 operating system but has not allowed me to upgrade. It has been fine for the past few years but is now getting to the point where programs are not functioning properly. What operating system should I be trying to upgrade to and what should I do in order for the upgrade to work? I have tried upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard but it says that I need 10.6 in order to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The only upgrade that has begun to work has been a 10.5.6 which is a less updated version of the operating system that I'm already using. Will downloading 10.5.6 allow me to upgrade to a better version? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

I found one on NextTechDirect for $150 to download. they are not a scam according to "scamadvisor.com."
When I drag the InDesign file that that was supplied by another designer who said it was  CS 6 onto my desktop it says CS 5.5. Is that because I only have CS 5.5?
    Should I buy this
Adobe InDesign CS6 Upgrade from CS5.5 WIN/MAC [Download] from Next tech....it is obviosly higher on the adobe site and alot of other places?

No one is likely to recommend where you buy your software from other than Adobe in these forums... not so much because of support for Adobe, but mostly because of lack of support/knowledge of any third party vendors.  I only know from experience that when you invest in bargain pricing you usually get what you pay for.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
      1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
      2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

      5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
      6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

  • I have a Mac PC OSx, version 10.5 and cannot get Icloud even though I have downloaded all new software?     gh I have downloaded all available software.

I have a Mac PC, OS X, 10.5.8  Version but cannot download ICloud and I was led to believe this version supports it.  I have downloaded all available software.  Does anyone have suggestions?  Just realized I need later version - - 10.7.5 or later.  How do I go about upgrading this operatin system?

10.7 is no longer avaiable for immediate download. You need to purchase a download code, which will be delived by email in 1 to 3 business days. Using that code, you can download the software from the Mac App Store, and it will stay available for re-download from that Apple-ID.

To get the Mac App Store, you need to purchase a Snow Leopard 10.6 Installer/Utilities DVD. This physical DVD will be shipped to you by conventional means. The software can be Installed and re-installed from the DVD.
