Correct target video size of an exported DVD video

I am trying to encode a video track from a DVD with wide-screen content to an MP4 file using the H.264 codec. What video frame size should I choose for optimal quality and minimal file size, 720 x 404 or 856 x 480? Or, if there is a way to do it, should I choose 720 x 480 with a 120:101 non-square aspect ratio pixel? The software I would use would be MPEG Streamclip, exporting with QuickTime 7 Pro.

I am trying to encode a video track from a DVD with wide-screen content to an MP4 file using the H.264 codec. What video frame size should I choose for optimal quality and minimal file size, 720 x 404 or 856 x 480?
If the source DVD is an anamorphic encode and you are using MPEG Streamclip for the conversion, then the app would normally default to 854x480 assuming the file is not being cropped. If the DVD is a letterbox widescreen encoding, then the 720x404 dimensions would probably be your best choice. With regard to the 720x480 dimensions, all NTSC DVDs use the 720x480 matrix for encoding both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect content.
Or, if there is a way to do it, should I choose 720 x 480 with a 120:101 non-square aspect ratio pixel?
If you want to replicate the original storage matrix and PAR encode the file, you might be better off using HandBrake here. It will normally encode anamorphic DVD content using the 720x480 matrix and set the correct PAR value to reproduce the correct viewing aspect ratio even if the content is automatically cropped by the application.

  • Is there a way to export at a target file size?

I need to export at <10Mb. For now I've been exporting at descending quality levels until I get each picture to come in just under 10Mb, but this is very time consuming.
Is there any way to do this straight out of Aperture? I see LR5 now has an option for target megapixel size, but I don't have LR.

Not that I know of.  It's trial➞retry until you get what you want, and it will change for each Image even if the Image's are from the same camera.  But "<10 MB" should be a pretty easy target to hit.
In general, with JPG compression, lowering the resolution loses the smallest details, lowering the quality loses the slightest tonal changes.  If your images have a lot of detail, lower the quality before you lower the resolution.  If your images have broad areas of nearly-matched tones, lower the resolution before you lower the quality.  Whatever you do, you should inspect every exported file before using it further.
Screenshot showing some of the results of my trying to get exported files to not exceed required storage specifications:
Would have liked to have the functionality you're seeking added to a future version of Aperture.  Maybe we'll get it in PhotOSX.

  • Color Correction: Canvas color is off from exported video

    Hey everyone,
Forgive me if this has been covered before, but I've been searching around and can't find the answer I'm looking for.
When I color correct a video, I get it to where I want in the canvas, and then go to export. When I export the video, it looks different from what I did in the canvas. The exported video ALWAYS looks like its never been color corrected. It's very aggravating because I have to over color correct it to make it look the way I want. Like raise the contrast a bit more, to get the exported video to look right, while the preview in the canvas looks bad.
Any suggestions to how to perhaps change the color settings on the canvas? or how to correct this problem?
    Thanks a lot,
    Jonathan

It's unfortunate that the word "calibration" has been co-opted to mean something along the subjective lines of a daily set-up using a blue gun gray scale or a blue screen with NTSC or PAL or HD bars, performing white/black and chroma level adjustments by eye.
Calibration of a monitor in the literal sense is performed by an engineer with engineering tools to perform precise, objective adjustments of the r,g,b bias and gains as well as any yoke alignment in the case of one of those old fashioned cathode ray tube type displays.

  • Target file size and Bitrates help

I am trying to make my 2minute 40 second video become a file size of no larger than 100MB. Right now it's 470MB and that was after I converted it with MPEG Streamclip to a smaller version that I could upload. Is there an easy way to calculate the maximum bitrate to make your existing video the right size? I noticed some bitrate calculators but none of them are for web video's and I don't see any that have a target file size. Short of taking an encoding class for this project I could use some suggestions.

Export from fcp with current settings and bring that into compressor.  Use one of the apple:  otherworkflows:  web:  quicktime 7 compatible..  When you apply them they'll give you an estimate (just an estimate) of the file size in the summary window.  It's a good place to start.  If you're going to be resizing, I'd strongly recommend that you turn on frame controls in the frame controls panel and set the resizing filter to best.
Once you've found your ideal settings, you can save this customized preset and apply it to other files.

  • AAC audio file increase in size when imported into DVD Studio Pro

    Hello all!
I just encountered a very unique issue with the DVD Studio Pro. I used the compressor to export my video as an MPEG2 file and my audio as AAC file. After the compression my audio file had an .mpg4 extention and was about 160MB in size. When I imported it into my DVD Studio Pro project, however, the audio increased in size to 1.2 GB. I tried so many different compressions, but the problem really is (I think) that the file bumps up in size once imported into DVD SP project. Is there anything in preferences that I need to adjust or change? Please help!
    Thank you.

    Hi
I'm a little lost now with versions history, but if you have A.Pack in your App folder, then must use it. Check this tutorial: Encoding AC3 with A.Pack.
Compressor 2 and 3 has AC3 encoding inside the main application.

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

  • "target" file size for streaming?

Newbie question #2 (Many thanks in advance!)
I understand that the answer is relative to the uncompressed file size, but I'm trying to figure out a target file size (how small) for a 250 Mb file (a 30-second movie) to stream on the web. Should I be aiming for 25 Mb? 100 Mb? 8 Mb? Just looking for a ballpark, if that's possible.
If this question misses a critical point, feel free to let me know!
    Thanks, e

If your going to use h.264 try 400 or 600 kbits/sec for the video (2passes, B-Frames). To tests, copy about 30 seconds of the video into a new Quicktime. If it look good to you then compress the original video. You can go as low as 300 kbit/sec. It all depends on the content of the video as to what bit rate you should use.
As for the audio use AAC at no higher than 128 kbps. You can go lower and use mono. There again it depends on what the audio is.
    I just compressed a 320x240 at:
    300...1MB
    400...1.3MB
    600...2.1MB

  • NW SR3 installation issue can't find NW export DVD 3/3

    Hello,
I'm pretty decent installing SAP on unix and I'm now learning on windows 2008 R2 SP1/MS SQL 2005.  I'm also accustomed to downloading the NW install master, export CD's and unicode kernel dvd.  So here is my question:
I'd like to just install NW 7.0 SR3 ABAP only to play around and kick the tires on windows.  I've downloaded the following DVD's to start the install:
    NW Install Export 1 of 2  51033493_1
    NW Install Export 2 of 2  51033493_2
    Install Master windows x64  51038621_13
    NW 7.0 SR3 UC-Kernel 7.00 Windows Server on x64 64bit   51033508_15
I've already installed MS SQL and SAP jre.  SAPINST runs fine up to the point where I point it to the NW export DVD's.  There are only 2 export DVDS for an install but 3 DVDS for an upgrade.  The install is failing trying to find the third export DVD, but there are only 2 for an installation.  I've also doubled checked my install master was correct as well.
It's probably something simple, but I'm stuck....
    TIA
    Scott

Hello and thank you for the response.
I was setting up a distributed landscape. I had already installed the global host and I was receiving this message while trying to install the database instance.  I've since started to download NW 7.3 for Windows.  I spoke with a co-worker and it made sense for a demo landscape to use the latest version.  I hope to have better luck with 7.3.
    Thanks again for the reply.

  • Applet for figuring bitrate based on target file size?

Occasionally when I'm exporting quicktimes for emailing to people with known restrictions on incoming file sizes, I'd love to be able to specify the target file size as opposed to the bitrate.
Does anyone know of any applets that can generate a rough estimate of what you should set the bitrate to in order to achieve a target file size given the length of the clip?
Sounds like a widget in the making to me...

    And a widget:

  • Knowing File Size Prior to Exporting

With the advent of youtube etc which limits file size to 100mb is there a way to calculate the file size prior to export?
Even better is there any way, maybe a plug in that you can aim for a specific file size, say 99.9mb and the codec would meet that target size keeping the VDO at the best quality possible within those parameters???
    Thanks,

Sounds like an interesting project for one of the shareware companies.......anyone??

  • Target File Size Too Large?

    Hello,
We have an interface, that takes a Source File-> Transforms it in the Staging Area ->and outputs a Target File.
The problem is the target file is way too large than what it is supposed to be.
We do have the 'Truncate Option' turned ON, so its not duplicate records..
We think its the Physical and Logical Lengths that are defined for the Target files.
We think the logical length is way too large causing substantial 'spaces' between the data columns thereby increasing the file size.
We initially had the Logical Length for the data columns as 12 and we got the following error:
Arithmetic Overflow error converting numeric to data type numeric.
When we increased the Logical Length from 12 to 20 the interface executed fine without errors. But now the target file size is just way too large 1:5
Any suggestions to prevent these additional spaces in the target columns??
    Appreciate your inputs!
    Thanks

Since 'File-system' does not have a property 'column length', ODI will automatically set a standard 'column length' according to the datatype of the column. In your case, as both your source and target is File, check the max length of each column in your source ( Ex: if your file is huge then open the file in excel and verify the lengths) and set the same 'Logical length' for your target file datastore.
drop the temporary tables (set the 'delete temp objects' option to 'true' in the KMs) and re-run the Interface. hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Parasuram.

Is there a size limit when exporting PDF to Word format?  I keep getting time out errors for files exceeding 100 MB

    Hi riversideredhead63,
100 MB is indeed the file size limit for uploading files to cloud.acrobat.com. Have you tried optimizing the PDF files in Acrobat to reduce their file size?
