Correct way to compress 16X9 file for the web

Hello: Shot an HDV project. After importing converted files to DVCProHD. 1280X1080 16X9. Edited 5 min. piece. Exported QT with current settings. Need to upload to You Tube. Please tell me...what's the best choice in Compressor? I tried H.264 Streaming 800kbps and the file now looks 4X3. Please help. THANKS!

Because of the non-square pixel format you're mastering in (DVCProHD) you have to force the frame size to 1280x720. And for an HD file, you can up the bit rate to about 2000 kbps for YouTube. (I believe 800 kbps is recommended for the 16:9 High Quality file)
Also, be sure to turn on Frame Controls (in Compressor), as it'll help maintain sharpness that will otherwise be lost when going to 1280x720. Though that'll up the encode time significantly...

  • Best way to encode Quicktime file for the web?

Hello all and thanks in advance for your help with this problem.
I need to know the best way to encode a quicktime clip for the web.
    This was my first try:
    http://www.denmothers.net/trailer-big.htm
It works fine in safari, firefox, and ie for mac, provided they have quicktime 6 or later but it seems not to work on pc browsers. The file is encoded as an .mp4 using compressor and played with the browser's quicktime plugin. I've read that encoding files as a .mov provides greater compatibility but when i compress it as a .mov using the mpeg4 codec the file sizes are huge and when i use the photo-jpeg codec the quality is poor. h.264 looks great and has low file sizes but then my viewers have to have quicktime 7 which i think is too limiting because many will have older computers.
How should I encode my file such that it works best across browsers and platforms and has the highest quality at the lowest size?
    Best,
    Keegan

If you open an .mp4 file in quicktime pro you can then select File->Save-As and you are presented with two options:
Save as self-contained: This will create a .mov that is the same size as your .mp4 but is playable on any system w/ QuickTime 6 and the Mpeg-4 codec. (PC's included).
Save as reference: This will create a small (>500kb) file that will simply reference the .mp4. If they're in the same folder the .mov created will open the .mp4. Without the .mp4 the .mov in this case is useless.
For what you're trying to do I suggest going with self-contained.

  • URGENT - need to compress a file for the web

I need to do something IMMEDIATELY that I've never done before, and I simply don't have time to read the manuals to tell me how to do this.
I have a 2 and a half minute video segment in FCP that I need to export for use on a web site. The main objective is to make this a smaller file size so it won't take up too much band width. We can sacrifice quality in order to make this a smaller file size.
Do I Export by using Compressor? What settings do I use?
We're in the middle of an intense political battle and I need to get this on our web site today. Please help!

    Consider hiring a consultant?
right under the EXPORT command, you will find Quicktime Conversion.
Use that and select Sorenson (or Sorenson 3). Leave all the defaults set as they are.
Once you've finished that and mounted it on your site, you can go back and try other settings. But I think you will understand very soon why your question cannot be answered easily. There are literally thousands of combinations of settings that will affect the quality of your movie and the viewing experience of your visitors. There are no easy solutions for downloadable or hinted movies except to hire an expert.

  • Encode Quicktime file for the web

I want to Encode a Quicktime file for the web and put it up on my .mac account web site - I have Sorenson Squeeze and Compressor 2....whats the best way and setting for this?

Really no simple answer. I'd go for one of the H.264 (Quicktime 7) formats. Experiment to suit. Compressor has a few options for this to suit different bandwidths.
Depends on who you want to be able to watch it, in which case a generic mpeg4 might be better or mpg1 for ensured compatibility.

  • Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

GraphicConverter as noted by Don, or Photoshop Elements are the favourites. Both will allow comprehensive editing, and save for web facilities including reducing the .jpg quality to shrink file size without making the picture smaller.
There is a free application calld Gimp (open source) but I don't know how good it is or whether it's updated for Lion.

  • Should I deinterlase my movie before compressing to a h264 file for the web

Hi I have a movie in fcp that I want to compress for the web. I am going to compress it to a h264 file using quicktime. I was wondering if I should deinterlace the movie before compressing it
    thanks sam

I have done it both ways and on computer monitors at least its always been my experience that DEINTERLACING the video looks better. Quite a bit better.
Now there are 2 main ways to do it. And I've gotten similar results both ways. You can deinterlace from within Final Cut Pro which works fine or you can set Compressor to Deinterlace. Now I've read articles on why one is better than the next, but at least with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 in the videos I've worked on I can't tell the difference. It looks good both ways.
    Hope that helps-

  • Best way to save HQ video for the web?

What´s the best settings for great video-quality for the web?
I have a 5 min long clip I´d like to put on my website.
I would like it to be 480x360 and with good quality. It´s ok if the file gets 30-40 MB.
I have tryed the Expert Settings, Quicktime Movie, Broadband - High, but the movie gets "striped".
    What´s wrong?
    A lot Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Magnus40,
I'm not sure what you are doing to create this problem. I create web movies all the time and have never had this problem, although, I never use the advanced settings cos I have never had to. When you go to the Quicktime export pane in iMovie you have the quality choices from full quality to web. When you select one of these it gives an estimate of the file size. For that length clip you should not need to use any setting besides full quality. I'd say the problem is coming from the 480x360 aspect ratio. This is what is compressing the file. Have you tried exporting it as full quality and then uploading it? The only problem you face by doing this is, it will take a long time for the movie to load on your website. For a short clip you may find that the CD ROM setting is sufficient.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to draw a triangle for the web

  • 16X9 HD for the web

I'm posting some online videos. The master footage is 720 16X9 HD footage. I think the total time for each clip is around 5 minutes. I'm trying to use Compressor to create a high quality 16X9 final product, and the file probably can't be any bigger than 200 MB. Any ideas on which settings I can use? Every setting I tried was regular aspect ratio, and not 16X9. I changed the cropping, and just about every variation I could think of, and could not get it done. Could anyone walk me through it?

Do you know what the cropping for 16X9 in SD? Is it around 720X400 for full size widescreen without letterboxing?

  • Illustrator cs6 problem converting files for the web

I have designed some simple logos in Illustrator CS6 and want to convert the .ai files to appear on a website, but when I use the Save for Web function and preview the GIFs or PNG-8s I created they are blurred and not a good enough quality, even when viewed at actual size. I realise there will be differences between the vector graphics of Illustrator and the pixel images on a desktop website, but these are more than just a minimal adjustment - they look out of focus. Am I doing something wrong? Am I creating Illustrator files that are too large or too small? Or am I converting the artwork into GIF or PNG-8 files that are the wrong size or format? I have searched the forums and web for a solution but found nothing on this. Any help would be much appreciated.

    na,
Have you ticked one of the optimizing options hidden away in the Image Size window?
Have you considered PNG24 with richer colours?

If i have a report already done, how can I make it available to users, so they can access them thru an IP or a host?
can I achieve that just with my developer 6i (report builder) and my database (oracle 9i)???

  • Getting best possible look for the web!

I am using Compressor for compressing my footage for the web. When I export out of FCP my footage looks nice and crystal clear however when I compress the footage then upload to the net its not as nice looking as it was. Now I recently bought a Compressor DVD Tutorial by Ripple Training Series. I pretty much knew just about everything on that DVD. I did try some suggestive settings that have made somewhat of a difference but its not crystal clear like many videos I see uploaded to DVXuser. The settings below might be okay it might just be the hosting site I have my videos on. Currently I am using www.sharkle.com
Here are some settings I use:
Compression Type - Sorenson Video 3
    Frame Rate 15
    Key Frame Every 75 frames
    Quality - Medium
Restrict Data to 400kbps (this is for DSL modems) around 1500 for cable modems
    Audio
    Q Design Music 2
    Channels = Stereo
    Sample Rate = 48k
    Streaming = Fast Start
    Geometry
    320x240
If anyone sees anything that I should change or try out differently please let me know. Again I am using Compressor and can also compress using Quicktime as well.
Here is a link to the latest video I completed for the web:
    http://www.sharkle.com/video/78755/
I am not sure if SHARKLE is recompressing the footage. If it is then thats why its not as good of quality.

Their making a FLV file from your sent in video.
Push your video back up to a high quality movie and send that in to them.
What you have sent in has all been squeezed highly with compression. Then they take and further compress it in the FLV format. Double compressing...not good.

  • Exporting video for the web for windows Media player

What software can i use to compress an AVI file for the web. The finished product will be WMA file.

WMA is Windows Media Audio. I think what you meant is WMV (Windows Media Video). To export to that format on a Mac you'll need Flip4ac, available from www.flip4mac.com Once you've installed it, it adds the WMV and WMA export option to QT and other apps such as Sorenson Squeeze.

  • What is the best way to create illustrator files for frames created in an InDesign layout?

Is there a quick way to do that or do i need to note the size of each frame in InDesgin and then input that into the dialog in illustrator. It seems like a waste of time. Is there a better way?
I am new to InDesgin. What I'd like is a way to automatically generate blank illustrator files  to fill in the graphic frames in my layout.
    Thanks,
    John

I have no existing Illustrator files for the project. I'm tring to use InDesign to create a rapid protoype. I may be working backward from what is expected.
If I could generate blanks that are the correct size that would be an easy way to get started on them, but copying the sizes to the new document dialog box in Illustrator is not a big deal either.
I figured that if i could create an Illustrator blank from InDesign that would get me started in illustrator quickly and also place the new file in the frame.

  • The best way to make proxy files for editing?

    Hi,
What is the best way to create proxy files for editing? I'm thinking Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy). The original material is DVCPRO HD 1080i50, shot on Panasonic P2 cards, and copied on to hard drives. But as there is about 400 hours of it, I desperately need to find a clever way to make smaller proxy files for editing.
I would also like to make the proxies at a smaller resolution than 1080i for the editing process.
I guess it's possible to import the media and then batch export it to the proxy format, but Is there a better way?

I'm not able to ingest the material directly from the P2-folders as ProRes 422 (Proxy). No matter how much I change the import settings in "Log and transfer", it still ingests as DVCPRO HD 1080i50.
Correct. DVCPRO HD P2 can only come in as DVCPRO HD. You can't transcode it. AVCIntra P2 is what you can bring in as ProRes. (Sorry Tom).
I can of course transcode it form there to the proxy format and delete the ingested files,
Why? Why do that? You have ingested all the files, right? You ALREADY HAVE THEM...right? Why not work with them? You obviously have the room (20TB). Why import all this, then now take the days it would require to make proxies?
Making the ProRes-proxies directly from the P2-material seems more logical, or isn't it?
DVCPRO HD P2 cannot come in as anything else, so the offline/online workflow for them doesn't work unless you import it all, then transcode to a smaller format...but then need to keep the originals online to relink to when you are done. If you wanted to do an offline/online, you needed to research this better...or test it...before you shot your hundreds of hours only to find that what you want to do won't work.
