Correct way to create a small independent clip from a larger clip

In a recent post:
Tara Easley replied to: How to export a short clip from within a larger scene?
With:
"After you make your in and out points, highlight the one minute segment and go to Modify. Then click "Make Independent Clip". It should save just the 1 minute clip in your bins section. You will need to change it's name, but that should work."
My question is whether this process will make an exact "stand alone file" with duplicate quality as the original clip or is there another method that must be used to maintain the original quality of the original clip and get a new independent file?

Okay, that is as I thought. FCE cannot help me 'chop' out a portion of the original file as it came from the camera (because it is in the wrong codec to work in FCE.)
Would Final Cut Pro be able to work with more file formats? Or does it also need to have cuts converted to AIC?
I think, because I am a beginner, that I am barking up the wrong tree about editing original footage since it really would also have to be converted to AIC before it would be useable in FCE. I"ll just be sure to save all of my original files from the camera and then 'crop out' what I need as separate files for archive by the method you named above.

1) Split your project into different versatile sub-modules each handle by an object. The module should be reusable later on.
2) Each module or class should be declared on separate .hpp and .cpp files. ( for reusability and portability )
3)Make each module as much self contained as possible(independent) . That way you can reduce unnecessary linking with other files and reduce dependency on helper files. Compiling and working on only one module at a time will be easier and faster.
4)When your code is better organize , coding will more systematic, less error prone, easy debugging and more fun in programming.
For example in my project I create classes like
i) CDatabaseManager - to take care of SQL database
ii)CPlaylistManager - to deal with complex playlist
iii)CGraphicManager - to deal with graphic overlay over video
and so on.

What is the correct way to create links to my website?

My site is finally finished and I am now looking to list it on various directories on the internet to generate links to my site.
When my site opens in a browser it shows up as http://ateccomputerservices.co.uk
I know this question has been asked many times on the internet but what is the correct way to post my link?
I know I should be consistent and use www or not on every link but none of the articles tell me whether I should use http:// or not when linking.
So for example, should I use...........

or
http://www.ateccomputerservices.co.uk
or
ateccomputerservices.co.uk
or
www.ateccomputerservices.co.uk
and should I put /index at the end?

When you browse to http://ateccomputerservices.co.uk and to http://www.ateccomputerservices.co.uk do you get the same page? Most hosts will automatically create a CNAME record for both 'www.example.tld' and 'example.tld' when the hosting account is created, but not all do. If that second CNAME record is not created, then you must always use the "www" prefix.

Correct way to create Photoshop graphics?

I have to create some graphics for a client and their logo includes a circle. I don't want to mess up the quality of the logo or make the circle an egg, etc. What is the best way to create the graphics. This is a 4x3 project. Do I start with a document that is 720x540 with square pixels and import the logo in or do I start with it at 720x480? What image size and pixel aspect ratio is best.

also, make sure that your image mode is RGB, not CMYK. and if you are going to want transparency in your file, save as a .psd

Is there a way to create playlist of video clips?

I use video clips extensively in presentations and workshops. I have dozens of places in movies that I own in iTunes where I want to play 30 seconds to a minute of a movie as an example of a behavior or situation. I manage this now with a manual list with the title, start place and how long to let it run.
The problem is that this is a carbon based system. I have to keep my movies queued to that place or remember to put it back there after I use it or watch the movie- something that is 50/50 at best. I would love a way to either tell itunes or to find a 3rd part program that I could create a "playlist" of titles with start and stop times so that I could just queue them based on the topic for the day. Not worried about IP rights here- this is not a commercial showing for money.
Ideas anyone?

I already have existing forward lookup zone created for contoso.com.
Is it better to create a host record 'Project.Mumbai' with ip 215.67.X.X?
or create one more forward lookup zone 'Project.Mumbai.Contosso.com' and cerate A record for 'Projec'?

Are you asking if you should create "project.mumbai" in the contoso.com domain, or if you should create "project" in the mumbai.contoso.com domain?
The choice depends on how you want to manage these records. If there will be a need to manage contoso.com and mumbai.contoso.com separately, then you should create two domains. You might have this need, for example, if the contoso.com domain is very
large, or if you want to host mumbai.contoso.com on a different DNS server, or if mumbai.contoso.com corresponds to an Active Directory domain elsewhere.
If none of these things are true, it will probably be easier to manage a single domain so you can just create contoso.com and add the host project.mumbai in this single domain.

Righty-ho. This is based on a spreadsheet like this with named columns in Numbers 3.5. (The rows must be consecutive - the script moves on as soon as it sees an empty row):
With the spreadsheet open, run the following AppleScript. It will create a group called Christmas List in Contacts, and then import the name and address data from the spreadsheet, adding each person to the group:

With the Christmas List group selected in Contacts, go to the Print menu and choose the label format you want:

This can also be done in Numbers 09, but the script would have to be modified slightly.

Is there any way to create a folder on idisk from ipad 2?

It appears that one can only save a document to an existing folder on idisk, not create a new folder. Anyone know a way? It is cumberson to have to go and start up my computer just to create a folder there.

No that is not possible with Muse alone. YOu can host it on Business Catalyst and upgrade the hosting plan to at least the webMarketing plan for general uploading. If it requires each user to have their own profile etc, then you will need to use BC webApps

Is there a way to create a email distribution list from my contacts?

I am converting from PC to apple. I have many contacts and want to learn how to create distribution lists. If anyone knows, please help.

That feature does not exist currently in the Comtacts app on the iPad. There are third party apps that let you do it - Group Email with Attachements (?) is one such app - I think!
I read where one user actually created a distribution list in the notes app bytry ping the email addresses and leaving a space in between each address and then copied the list from the Notes app and pasted it into the To: field in an email as a workaround. I tried it and it will work - you have to play around with it a little. I can't remember if you leave a space in between the email addresses or separate them with a comma, but I did get it to work.
Of course now I have this bizarre looking distribution list that pops up when I'm typing an email that I will never use and can't get rid of, but curiosity got the best of me on that one.

As JStrawn points out, Importing the full Clip into the Project, but only using what you need from it, where you need it, has no drawbacks. The actual AV file is NOT physically input to the program, in any way. What happens with an Import, in very simple terms, is that PrPro links to that file, where it resides on your system, when you do the Import. There is only a link to that AV file, and that is written into the PRPROJ (the Project file) file in XML language. The file stays where it was, and only a line, or two of code is written. That is why a PRPROJ file is so small, compared to a media file - it's only lines of code, and contains zero media. Even Titles, which ARE included in the PRPROJ file, are but instructions, until one Exports.
The three methods mentioned above are really quite similar, but just reflect a slightly different workflow. I like the Source Monitor and setting the In & Out Points, then just dragging (I guess I mouse more than use keyboard shortcuts) an Instance of that file, now Trimmed, onto my Timeline. There are a few times, when I do use the Razor, but not that often. I seldom use the Trim Monitor w/ it's keyboard shortcuts, but many could not live without that - personal choices.
What one sees on the Timeline are representations of the various segments of that original longer Clip. But they are basically for display - to give the editor a visual to work with. Those Clip Instances do not yet really exist, and are only XML instructions. When one goes to Export the Timeline, PrPro reads those instructions, follows the link to that original file, and extracts the data that it is instructed to use, and essentially copies just THAT data to the new file, that PrPro is outputting. It is at that point, that something new exists, created from the chosen data in that original file, processed through the instructions written to the PRPROJ file.
Now, there ARE some times, where one would want to create Sub-Clips, or even Export the Trimmed Clips as separate, discrete files, but from what I gather, you do not have a need for that, so you can save yourself a couple of steps.
One possible use would be if one is hardpressed for HDD space, and they wished to actually cut up the long file, Export to individual files, and then Delete that original file. However, and even there, one could use the above techniques to edit the long file, and Export that edited version as a separate file, then Deleting that original longer file. Caveat - if one does that, then that Project is basically "done," as the Imported media file, the original long one, would no longer exist, as it has been Deleted.

I recently downloaded a large number of photos from my iphone to iphoto. All of the photos are now under event 4/9/2011 (the date and times are correct, just all in one event). How do I change/break up photos and add/change event dates? I don't want to scroll up hundreds (half a year) of photos to see photos I took yesterday.

Connect Independent Clips (Play All)

I am new to DVD Studio -- have a fairly simple question I think:
I am making a DVD that will contain a number of short vignettes/films. Each film is independent of the other but I would like a "Play All" option so a viewer can easily watch one after the other after the other.
I know I can accomplish this by compressing all the clips into one big movie, making chapters, and having the chapters selected return to the main menu, but I don't want to have to put all the clips into a single mpeg file (I would rather do subtitles and everything independtly on a clip by clip basis as I work on them).
So, is there an easy way to make all the independent clips play back to back ? Is that the "story" feature ? I played around with it but couldn't figure it out.

Stories would be the easiest approach and the easiest way to do the stories would be to place them all on one track with chapter markers between each clip
The Play All Story would include all Chapter Markers
If you want just to play a section you add just the marker to the section
For instance if there are 3 clips, with Markers 1,2,3 - PLay All Story would have markers 1,2,3 - Just section 1 would have just marker 1, etc.

There are also other approaches, for instance you can make two stories for each seperate track, so track 1, 2 & 3 would each have a Play All Story and a Play Sol story (each would be identical with one marker, the difference being the end jumps for the stories would be either set to the next track you want to play (Play All) or return to the Menu (Play Solo)
And the last way would be scripting.
Button action would be to a script
mov GRPM (whichever you want) SPRM 8//this sets the GRPM to the button that was pressed. Buttons are in increments of 1024 so easier to divide by 1024 to keep track

Jump Track 1 if GPRM = 4 //both selections 1 and 4 will go to track 1 to start
Then the end jumps for each track (could be rolled into one script but you can make a few may be easier to follow)
So for track 1
JUMP Menu, if GPRM = 1 //(play all was not selected so return to menu)
Jump Track 2
So for track 2
JUMP Menu, if GPRM = 3 //(play all was not selected so return to menu)
Jump Track 3
Track 3 will always return to menu since it is last in either event, so just set end jump
