Correct way to export InDesign content to InCopy HELP!

I know this must be a bonehead question because I've done it right in the past, but now I'm stumped.
I have an INDD file with a main story and many graphics.  I want to export the story to ICML so an editor can work on the document in InCopy.
So I select the story, and go Edit-->InCopy-->Export-->Selection. The icml gets created as expected.  But now things diverge:
when I go to another machine with InCopy, I can open the ICML with InCopy, but I only see the story, not the whole layout. I want my editor to see editable text and uneditable graphics.
What obvious thing am I overlooking here?

Oh yes, now I remember!
You export the stories as described, but you must open the INDD file from InCopy not the ICML file.
Too much July 4 fun has clearly muddled my thinking.

  • How do I export InDesign content so non-users can make edits?

I am an in-house designer for a mid-sized nonprofit company. I am working on editing some large brochures, (50 pg or so.) The brochures have a lot of formatting and styles.
I have been copying the text to a Word file, and sending it to my coworkers for edits. When I re-import the text, I have to re-apply all the formatting.
Can I use xml tags to keep the file formatting in place so that my coworkers can edit the content? Can my co-workers use word to edit the xml files without having to see the tags?
Is the solution as easy as managing the paragraph styles between word and InDesign?

Thank you all for your advice. I feel like I've gotten a satisfactory answer, although it is more of a pain than I was hoping for.
I'm just going to add some details to reply to the later posts.
I didn't know that Acrobat reader could handle comments. I have had a lot of instances where I could have used PDF comments and this will help a lot.
I'm trying to cut down on the amount of typing that I have to do, to save work for me and to reduce the possibility of errors.
Story Tweaker sounds like a great idea, except that adding a new piece of software into the process would be a monumental pain based on the average contributors computer skills.
Same for InCopy, Plus we couldn't afford it.
    I actually have four prongs:
    Use tools users know
    Avoid purchasing new software
Avoid errors between their content and my final product
    Minimize keystroking
I'm going to have to be very specific in my use of styles in the InDesign file and in the Word Document.
I'm going to have to make sure that my Word doc is very well locked and that all changes are tracked correctly.
Lastly, I'm going to have to make sure that my page styles are very flexible so that edits that change the pagination can be accomodated as painlessly as possible.
Since I am the inhouse designer, I very often have to design the layout before the copy is finalized, and no ability to make anyone pay. Well, maybe lunch.
    And I agree about Word.

  • Correct way to export uncompressed to get a product aired on TV

    Hello all,
just finished editing a 50 minute doc that will be aired on Greek TV
I edited with most of my footage beeing  DV-pal 16:9 so I edited on a sequence with these kind of settings.
I exported a "current settings" version and took it to an AVID and recorded a BETASP tape with that.
but people tell me that I should export uncompressed for better results
I just did, but instead I get about 20 files all sized about 2 GB, they are name like I named the project but project av1, project av2 etc
the last file has the name of the project is a playable mov file, but it's only 2.6 GB big.
The current setting export was 11.5 GB, the uncompressed TEST I did for one (1) minute of footage to test the size requirements was 1.3 GB, so IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE TO ME to have the 50 min documentary sized 2.6 GB
    1) What am I doing wrong? if anything
    2) whats the best export way to get broadcast quality and view the project just like on my Mac?
    3) the uncompressed export changes my aspect ratio into streched 4:3, but I guess that players can fix that ....right?
Any help would be musch appreciated, people in here saved me on deadlines more than once...thank you in advance

now then I must find out more:
Danny D, I watch anything of his, not listed as transmitted here
this is a much bigger show than I would expect to use the DVX 100, to our thinking this is a very brave and weird choice of camera, certainly not chosen to keep costs down, but I dont know the situation in the USA, you would never get away with this in the UK
So I wonder... If something is shot correctly, would anyone at the EBU ever know?
The compliance sheets must state  complete workflow: cameras, links, recording, editing........
if a broadcaster flouts the regs there are very heavy fines so you just dont play silly.
I also wanted to ask... does cable programming in Europe have different standards?
with cable satelite and digital terrestrial mainstream broadcasters allocated a full bandwidth chanel must  produce programming to full EBU specs
''Community chanels'' low bandwidth chanels, can distribute non broadcast originated material - sound and vision must be to correct levels.
so all the shopping channels must have full EBU spec studios cameras and gallery the sound and picture quality is as good as a studio based drama
I'm learning a great deal here today!

  • Export Indesign Document to Incopy Document

    Hi,
I need to export the Indesign Document(.indd) to Incopy Document(.incx).I have used the following code
    app.documents[0].exportFile(ExportFormat.INCOPY_DOCUMENT, File("C:/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe InDesign CS3/Scripts/test/Input_Output/test.incx"), false);
But it shows error like "The specified object doesn't support the desired export format".
    Please suggest me.
    Regards

Could you send me a sample document (askoldich [at] yahoo [dot] com) so I could recreate the problem? I wrote this script for our own workflow and it has been working for us without any problems for about 9 months — probably your documents have a different set up than ours — I'd like to see what causes the error .

  • Correct Way to Export 4:3 Format Video?

I'm making a video in 4:3 format (480 x 360), since that seems to be the size of videos on YouTube, and I want to put the finished video on YouTube. I'm using video screen captures in .mov format as the cuts for the video. All the .mov video files are 4:3.
I want to look at the video a few times with different edits before putting it on YouTube, so at this point, I just want to export it to the desktop.
There are a lot of export settings available in iMovie's Share->Export Using Quicktime dialog box, but I haven't yet found the right ones to export this video.
For example, I tried setting the export size to 480 x 360. The exported movie was the right dimensions, but blurry.
Then I tried just doing an export using Share->Export Movie (Medium size), but the top and bottom of the frame were cut off.
What are the best export settings for exporting 4:3 video?
Thanks very much in advance to all for any info.

Good grief! I just imported an .mov file, and IM cropped the video on import to 1.76:1 !
    (Moments later...)
Okay, I just added another 480 x 360 clip to the same IM project, and this time IM recognized the aspect ratio, and added sidebars in the viewer. Switching out of IM and back yields anomalous results: sometimes IM shows the video at 1.76:1, cropped, and other times, it shows it uncropped with sidebars.
Are other people able to make a standard 480 x 360 YouTube video using IM?

  • InDesign / Best way to export for Web?

    Hi guys,
I did an A2 (large size) poster and now i need to have the very same image for Web Mailing on Internet. I guess it will be a 650 pixeles by 800 px.
Which is the best way to export this content for Internet?
    1) I notice that if i save the InDesign file to PDF even in the lowest quality the small text keeps crisp and clear while the file is very small size. Unfortunately PDF cannot be used -i think- as embedded images into a mailing list.
    2) If i export the very same InDesign file at the highest posible resolution as JPG -a traditional Internet image standard- the text is blurred and not well defined, besides the file is quite large.
    3) Should i exported to PDF and then open in Photoshop and "Save for the Web" as JPG? Maybe Photoshop has a better exporting engine when regarding to images than InDesign...i don't know.
How can i find a way to have well defined crisp and clear text, small size and image? I am not sure i could use PDF format here.
Any help or ideas? that would be great
    Thanks,
    S

    Thanks for the tip!
I am sorry i forgot to say i have an A2 and an A3 size poster version. I used the A3 poster and the 650 pixeles poster for Internet actually turn out to be quite readable. I used quite large fonts size in the original design, a bit of a Swiss or Constructivism style poster.
    Cheers

  • Correct way to do SSO

    Hi,
I am trying to include an JAVA system into ABAP system.
I have some doubts in here:
1> What is the correct way to export certificate from JAVA stack, using NWA(.der file) or using VIsual Admin(.crt file)?
When I import the certificate, exported using Visual Admin i.e. crt file, into ABAP stack, I dont see any acknowledgement symbol(red, yellow or green) beneath their entries in SSO2.
2> while adding the JAVA certificate in the ACL list of ABAP system, what do i put in system SID and client fileds, when the other system is pure JAVA?
what is the significance of including the client in there?
3> Is it important to create the certificate of a system itself in ABAP system and then add it into ACL list too?

  • Export InDesign File Peices

I am working with an InDesign file and would like to be able to programatically work with the content after the document has been created.  Is there any way to export InDesign documents to a text based format which has the coordinates of the content within the file.  Essentially I'm looking for a way to grab the links out of the file along with their positions and sizes.

    Good morning.
Most of the time, people who want to programmatically work with InDesign using it's scripting features. It has a very detailed object model that is scriptable in JavaScript in a cross-platform fashion, and also in AppleScript on Macs and VBscript under Windows. It's generally the best way to accomplish automation tasks, rather than trying to parse InDesign's files.
That said, you can export to IDML (in CS4 and CS5), or to INX in CS3. Both are XML-based formats where you can pull out individual objects and their coordinates. INX is an XML file directly. IDML is actually a ZIP archive of multiple XML files. Adobe provides documentation for both.

  • Export? content auf sqlarchive

I think there is no way to export the content of sqlarchive? (only cut/paste the content of a single entry).
Such an export could be useful for moving an development workspace.

In ESTK's Object Model Viewer, do a search on "exportFile" and that will give you a list of all the objects that support that call. So, if you have on a page of your catalogue one of these items all set up and ready to export, then just export it.
But if you have to assemble the information in order to create your ticket, I'd use a technique where I create a temporary document and populate it from the catalog, then export it and discard it.

  • The Best Way to engage InDesign with InCopy

    Hello Mr./Ms.
I have some question about collaborating between InDesign with InCopy. My question is which one the best way to engage InDesign with InCopy, the way number one or number two?
Usually, I make assignment first in InDesign, and I put that file (.inca) on a server. So the editor can open the inca file from server. Instead of Editor, I take the incx file from server.
The Editor directly open Indd File from server, so I'm not necessary to create assignment file.
I hope someone can help to solve this my problem. Thank you very much for attention.
note: What server and network requirement for best result InDesign and InCopy workflow?

I respectfully disagree; I think assignments are in most cases (not all) more trouble that they're worth.  For your local work, continue w/INDD files only. It just makes things simpler.
When an editor wants to work on something off-site, the designer can make an assignment on the fly for them.  It could even be the entire document as one large assignment. Since the stories are already exported, you just need to make the assignment (Create New Assignment from the Assignment panel menu) and the drag/drop the linked stories to that assignment. Other people can still open the INDD file but they won't be able to edit the stories that were packaged for the remote editor.

  • What is the Text Book correct way to do a spot uv merging multiple applications and exporting from 1

I am unsuccesssfully finishing a project using Spot UV and about to start another.  I want to start this one out the Text Book correct way.  Here are the details.
I have logo's coming from Illustrator that I want to have a spot UV on
I have photos coming from photoshop that I want a spot UV on
I have a design element in In Design that I want a spot UV on
What is the Correct way to get everything into In Design have it output to a PDF that a printer could use and a second one that I could use for the Web that does not show the spot uv
A note is that the last project I followed all the tutorials on the web that say to use channels in photoshop to make my spot UV that in the end I think is causing me a lot of headaces right now.
    Thanks in advance

Put the spot UV on its own layer in InDesign. Turn it off for the web version of the PDF.

  • What is the best way of exporting artboards from Illustrator for use in InDesign?

    Hi,
I have an artboard in Illustrator CS6 which contains some text with a scribble effect applied to it.  I would like to use this text in an InDesign CS6 document.  I am wondering what the best way of exporting/importing this artboard would be so that I get the best quality.

Save as an AI file with PDF compatibility enabled and the Document Raster Effects set to "High"; then use File>Place in ID.

  • Correct way to upgrade from LP 8 to 9 with all the extra content?

I know that Apple has moved around the default folders for Apple Loops and extra audio content with different versions of Logic. When upgrading from a full install of LP8 to LP9, what is the correct way to do that. I'm worried I may get duplicate Apple Loops etc.
Should I just run the installer and install all 9 discs to the default settings, or do I need to pay attention to which folders the extra audio content goes? I'm seeing a scenario where the Jam Packs from LP8 are in a different folder than the default for LP9 and so will get installed a second time.

Thank you for your reply. So the jam Packs are identical to LP8? Then I can skip thoseI have a pretty good idea of where the actual files are located. So I should be able to figure it out.
How can I the make sure that every file on the disk is actually in the loop browser , and to avoid duplicates? Over the years as directories have been changed for GB and LP, it's been quite confusing, especially since I already had some Jam Packs and also Soundtrack Pro and corresponding Loops before they became part of LP and some other Loop packages. Is it really as easy as deleting everything in the Loop Browser and then dragging all the folders from the HD in there?
