Correct way to open pdf in ai?

Hello:
I created a design for a window cling using InDesign and submitted it to the printer as a cmyk PDF. The vendor is now requesting an ai file. Illustrator is outside my skill set, but I do have it as part of CS6. I opened the PDF in Illustrator and did Ctrl+Y to confirm that it was entirely vector, and it is. Is there any problem with simply saving it as a .ai? Or is there a better way to go about it? The file will not need to be edited in Illustrator.

Opening a "non-native" PDF into Illustrator always presents editing challenges. I would check text closely, to see that it is still positioned correctly. Often kerning can change when opening a PDF.
Of course, the vendor could just as easily open the PDF in AI, but having you do it makes it your fault if something goes wrong.
As for editing within AI, you will find many unnecessary "clipping masks" that could easily be deleted. This would not change the file appearance, but would greatly simplify editing in AI. Using "Select>Object>Clipping Masks", makes quick work of this.

You can PLACE a PDF as you would an image file, but it will not be editable inside ID.
There's a plugin, I think from Recosoft, called PDF2ID that will allow you to open a PDF file as native objects in ID, but your mileage may vary as to how usable the file will be.

  • Why Acrobat Reader doesn't open pdf-files from Safari?

I'm new Mac user and cannot find answer why I cannot open pdf-files directly from Safari. My Macbook OS X 10.9.3 and Safari is 7.0.4. Only way to open pdf-files is to download the content first and then open it. If I try to open it directly Acrobat says "Before proceeding you must first launch Adobe Acrobat and accept the end user license agreement". I have downloaded Acrobat Reader several times already and cannot understand what I'm doing wrong.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1

    Hello,
after I've upgraded to Windows 8.1, I can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer (directly double clicking the file). The AcroRd32.exe runs in the background (2x !) as I see the processes in task manager, but there is no user interface visible. I have Acrobat
Reader 11.0.06, the desktop version (not Metro). I tried uninstalling the Acrobat reader and installing it again but this didn't help. The only way to open PDF files is to close the AcroRd32.exe from the task manager, open empty Acrobat Reader from the desktop
and then drag&drop the PDF file over that window. This is quite inconvenient. Is there a way to fix this issue so I can open PDF files directly from windows explorer?
    Many thanks!

I had to install adobe reader, but   PDF's used to display just fine with IE, any idea what happened ?
    Windows 8.1 pro.
    thx

  • Opening pdf documents in SOLAR01

    Hello All,
Is there a way to open pdf documents in SOLAR01.
If I try this now, an internet browser is opened which after a while will show:
<i>The page you are looking for is currently unavailable</i>
    1) is it so that the solmandocumentation service needs to be enabled to show pdf documents.
    2) is there a way to open pdf docs in adobe reader directly (without IE).
    Thanks for the help,
    Jurjen

    Hi
You can view all pdf doc in solman itself just select the same and click display icon or just double click it it will open in solar01 or solar02 itself but wait for some time to get it loaded.
whereas if you want to open the doc in explorer just click the attributes and generate url and paste the same in explorer.
You can view in explorer this way.
If you are facing any issue in the above standard procedure please contact your basis team for the same.
    Please reward points.

  • Why can't I open pdf documents after using Adobe Reader security?

I have been able to open pdfs perfectly well up until I changed the security settings on Adobe Reader.  As I read somewhere that Apples have an inbuilt pdf reader I trashed everything Adobe, but still can't open pdfs.  Tried using Preview  to no avail.
Is there some other way of opening pdfs without reinstalling Adobe?

You didn't think of mentioning that in your first post?  So it's not Adobe Reader or Preview you are having problems with.  It's pdf's in your browser!
For Safari, you need to remove the adobe pdf plugins which Adobe apparently screwed up.  You need to remove:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
I think you can "get away with" removing just the second one.  But both for sure should allow you to open pdf's in a browser (all browsers).

  • How can I make chromium to open PDF files directly in okular?

    Hi all,
I switched from firefox to chromium and there is one thing that I would like to have solved: At the moment, the only way to open PDF files from the web is to first save them locally and open them afterwards from the chromium statusbar or from the chromium downloads tab (chrome://downloads/). Is there a way to configure chromium to open PDF files directly from a remote URL in okular?
Thanks in advance & kind regards,
    jamesbond007.

Yes, I would like to know that as well. Here it tries to open pdf files with the adobe plugin but fails (grey window). It's especially annoying with javascript links that do not allow to use "save as".

  • Open pdf files from button

Hello, please i need help with my problem. Is there any way to open pdf files from button? How can i set this in DVD Studio? Thanks for your answer.

Just to pick up from Shawn - even if you do use DVD@ccess you cannot use a button to launch the link, you have to use a full menu. In practice, you use two identical menus and set the button for the PDF to go to the second menu, which is set to time out very quickly and jump back to the original menu. It gives the visual effect of a button launching the asset, but in fact it was the opening of the second menu which did the trick.
And just to emphasise what Shawn rightly said - don't use DVD@ccess. It is at best unreliable and for many PC users won't work at all. It is far better to add the PDF as ROM material and put a message on a menu screen that tells the user there is additional content on the disc, and how to access it. This has the added advantage of letting those using a set top player know the material is there without frustrating them that something doesn't 'automatically' work (you can't open a PDF on a set top player, only on a computer player).

  • Is there  a way to make Safari open PDF pages without opening Finder and select Reader from my applications folder?

Simple, When I want to open a .pdf page from the web, I get Finder to open and I have to go to my applications folder to pick up Acrobat reader, Is there a way to have Safari doing it all by itself, Preview, or any other program?

Right or control click a PDF file you have on the hard drive then click: Get Info
In the Get Info panel click the pop up menu next to:  Open with
Select the app you want to open PDF files from the pop up menu then click:  Change All

  • I cannot open PDF documents correctly. I get an error on the page that says there is an error on the document. Neither Adobe Acrobat or Reader work.

I cannot open pdf files that are maps correctly . Some of the data layers are missing. I get a warning message that there is an error in the document and I should contact the originator. I have both Adobe Acrobat and the free version of Reader but neither will open them. When I forward them to other clients, they cannot open them either but can open them from the original sender.

Open Tools/Options/Advanced/general/Config. editor, copy mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks into the search box, double-click the preference to make its value false, OK, restart TB, and see if you still have problems with pdf attachments.
For messages that have already been received in IMAP accounts, you can force a re-download by selecting the Message Source (Ctrl-U), then try to open the attachment.

  • IE7 randomly freezes in a strange way opening pdf

    Hi all,
this is for a bug which occurs sometimes opening pdf with Internet Explorer. Plugin used from Adobe Reader.
    OS: Windows XP
    Internet Explorer Version: 7
Adobe Reader Version: 9.4.0 (same issue with 9.4.6)
Even if this bug occurs randomly, I realizes it happens expecially when I have already opened (and closed) many pdf.
The freeze is strange: IE7 is distorted, like in the picture attached!
Are you aware of this specific kind of bug?
A part of finding a trick to avoid this problem, it would be amazing to get an Adobe/Microsoft official link describing the bug and the fixing.
    Many thanks in advance

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
