Correcting Colour Balance and Density with Nikon D80

When uploading files to iPhoto6 created with a Nikon D80, I am noticing the colour balance and overall density of the files has changed from the thumbnails that appear on the camera. I find I have to make adjustments on many of the uploaded files as they invariably appear too dark on iPhoto.
Is there an incompatibility issue with Nikon's settings as recognised by iPhoto?
Any suggestions on how to tweak the settings on iPhoto to try to match
colour balance and density from the camera?
Macintosh eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'll look into this with Nikon and get back to you.
I wonder if this color sync issue would also affect the density of the files.
I notice they are about 25% darker than the originals.
When you have two devices there is always the
possibility that they will have a different
definition of what 'red' or 'yellow' is. To overcome
this apple developed ColorSync, a series of color
profiles, used to negotiate that issue. iPhoto
typically uses the sRGB profile. What does your
camera use?

  • Our EFFECT COLOUR CORRECTION COLOUR BALANCE  feature doesn't work on solids. Any clues?

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a light sabre effect. He has followed a series of instructions from the net, but no matter what we try the solid will not change colour using the EFFECT > COLOUR CORRECTION > COLOUR BALANCE feature on the layer.
On the linked page is the file + full instructions:
    http://beyondthewallmedia.com/?q=aftereffectsproblem
Could someone more experienced with After Effects please help us out and tell us why this feature isn't working in this project?
"Using your mouse to slide the numbers, drag the 3 “Blue Balance” labels to the right, up to 100 is you wish. This should start to change your glowing white lightsabre into a blue one. Play around with it, till you have the colour you want. You can slide the “Red” and “Green” Balance labels to the left to lessen their effect too."
Would really value someone taking a look at this for us. Thanks.

I agree with Mylenium.  There are some serious flaws in the instructions.  With no colour in the solid, Color Balance will have no effect.
But your project is also incorrectly built, according to the instructions: you've duplicated the mask 5 times, rather than the layer.
In the precomp, make your solid blue, with just one feathered mask, duplicate the layer 3-5 times, switch all to Add transfer mode.

  • Problems with Nikon D80

So I'm having a problem importing images into iPhoto from a Nikon D80 I just got. I'm shooting everything RAW because I'm silly like that, and when I tried to import into iPhoto by connecting the camera to my machine, there are a couple problems:
    a) it takes AGES to load the thumbnails. About 5+ minutes to load the thumbnails for 140 some-odd pictures.
    b) when I try to import the pictures (either all pictures or a single picture that's selected), it just sits there and does nothing until I get an error that says unreadable picture (meanwhile the picture shows up fine on the D80 monitor.)
    c) i tried to open an image from the finder simply by double clicking on it. at that point, preview would open up, but no image would be displayed, just the preview window with no content and a spinning beachball.
    d) i tried to copy an image from the SD card to my machine via Finder, and that stall indefinitely. cancelling the copy wouldn't do anything - the only way to restore the finder was to disconnect the camera.
To troubleshoot this issue, I have tried the following:
    a) shoot in JPEG instead of RAW
    b) tried a different SD card
    c) tried a different USB cable
    d) tried using a SD media reader and connecting the SD card directly to my machine bypassing the camera
    e) tried mass storage mode and point-to-point mode on the camera
    f) tried different USB ports on my machine.
All of these alternate methods have yielded the same results, so I'm baffled. I'm going to take the images on the SD card to the store I bought the camera from to see if they will load on their machines there - maybe it's my mac, but I doubt it.
    So my machine specs are 17" MBP C2D 2.33Ghz 3GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 10.4.10, iPhoto 7.0.2.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Jason:
I know you're at 10.4.10 but you might try one or both of the following:
1 - download and reapply the 10.4.10 COMBO updater.
2 - download and install Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0.1 (Universal).
    See if either will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Correcting white balance and exposure

Does FCE offer good ways to fix bad white balance and underexposure?
I just tested the video filter for underexposure and color and they improve things are just pathetic compared to an edit an editor friend did in full Final Cut. So maybe FCE can do better and I just missed or did not see what to do?

You would probably do better with the 2-way color corrector than what you originally did. The 3-way in FCP is a better tool but the 2-way is what comes with FCE.
In general, with the 2-way color corrector you should start adjustments this way:
Click the Auto Contrast button once
Then do Auto Black followed by Auto White (one click each)
Then adjust the Mids if necessary.
After all that, play with the color balance..
To better white balance your shot it often helps to crank the Saturation slider all the way up, then use the eyedropper tool at the lower left of the Balance wheel to select something in your shot that should be truly white (white, not necessarily bright). Since the saturation slider is all the way up, any adjustments you make will be exaggeraged but that helps you get it right. You can make further adjustments to get the whites as neutral as possible and then slide the saturation back down to a more normal level. It takes some noodling, but it can be done.

  • Load Balancing and Failover with 10G Standard Edition

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle Replication and need some help setting up replication for load balancing and failover. Is this possible using Oracle 10G Standard Edition? I plan on having all updates done on the master site and both databases will be for reads. In case of failure of the master site, I would need to be able to failover to the other database.
Also, if anyone knows of any documention for Basic Replication in 10G, please let me know.
    Thanks.

Simple nnapshot replication of data would require significant manual effort to configure to load balance or failover. One the load balancing side, you would generally be limited to to static load balancing-- assigning half the users to one machine and the other half of the users to the other machine, regardless of who is actively using the machine. Failover would be a significant manual effort, particularly to bring the failed machine back into the cluster. You would be implementing the guts of multi-master replication.
Frankly, if you actually have a system which is valuable enough to need load balancing and disaster recovery, I'm going to wager that it will be far cheaper even in the short run to buy more boxes and/or enterprise edition licenses than to try to implement this sort of thing yourself. In the long run, it will be far cheaper, since it will be far easier to maintain. Building all this yourself would probably be penny wise and pound foolish.

  • I get "program error" or "wrong kind of file" when attempting to open RAW (.NEF) files from my new Nikon D7100.  Works fine with Nikon D80.  What do I need to do?

FYI, I am on Elements 9.0.forumnotifier

Each time a new camera model is introduced the camera raw plugin has to be updated for its format. The D7100 requires ACR 7.4 which is not compatible with PSE 9. So you have three options:
    1. Upgrade PSE.
    2. Use the nikon software to convert your files and open the converted files into PSE for further editing.
    3. Download the free Adobe DNG converter and use that to convert your NEFs to DNG files that your version of ACR can understand.

  • Dark prints, loss of colour ...(Lightroom)Nikon D80

Please help, this prob is driving me nuts. every time i send off my photos to be printed (@photobox) what looks a perfect image comes back really dark and with a loss of colour/contrast. i know a bit about monitor alteration and have set the brightness of the screen to .0. still it looks brighter than what comes back. ive tweaked the contrast of the monitor and if i print at home the pics all come out with a pink hint but brightness at home is fine....please someone what am i doing wrong !!!

Also before I forget it is absolutely necessary to calibrate your monitor with a hardware tool to get good color. On a Mac you can get away with
software calibration if you're not too critical but also there hardware calibration is essential.

  • Loss of Colour balance and brightness when burning to  DVD

Hi new to Mac and having problems with photos and video that is fine when viewed in iphotos/ivideo/idvd etc or even when printed from or viewed on a PC. All looks great when assembled but as soon as the project is burned to DVD and played on a standalone player, images seem very red and dark. has anybody experienced the same ? do i need to overcompensate /adjust balance before assembling and burning a project. Any ideas would be very helpful.

John, I saw a reply you posted in July to a similar question on the
Premiere Elements forrum, which is good because I think I will have some
extra work to do on this project.
The MPG files originally came from material I originally edited in
Premiere Elements on a MacBook Pro. The source material was AVI files from
a miniDV camcorder. I shot multiple cameras on several nights of a
theatrical production. With the volume of footage and a lack of computing
horse-power, I decided to make shorter segments based on the scenes within
the play. I know this was far from an optimal work-flow (mea culpa) but
that is the reality I face. So now I am looking for the best way forward.
Short of re-editing the whole thing (now that I have CS5.5 on a PC), which
is out of the question, it sounds like my best option is to go back to the
Mac and export the individual scenes as something other than MPG's. I
assume that in Premiere Elements 9, I need to select "Share with
Computer", then NTSC-Widescreen, and then go to the Advanced menu. Should
I then ramp the quality up to maximum? Are there other settings I need to
adjust to maximize the output quality?
At this point, I do not care about the size of the output files, nor do I
care if each 10 minute scene requires all night to render. I just would
like to get better quality clips that I can then use in CS5.5 on my PC to
assemble the full show, added chapter titles, and then print to DVD using
Encore. Any advice you can offer would be most welcome.

  • Correcting colour and contrast in scanned slides

I am investigating how to scan slides as accurately as possible, with the qualification that sometimes I may accept less than 100% accuracy for a better-looking image. I am in the midst of comparing several scanning methods, and at this stage one particular method stands above all the rest.
My original idea (before I started testing) was that I would not ask the scanner to do much processing of the raw image, that I would edit in Photoshop. The reasoning was: there's no better image-editing program than PS, and if PS (or its plugins) can't improve the image no other software could.
Well, it looks like I was wrong. I have tried to edit several raw scans, and using PS I can't get results that are as good as asking the scanner to edit the slides.
I have uploaded two sample scans to: http://www.mediafire.com/?z1w4ekew39dwa
Each scan has two versions: a "natural" scan out of the scanner (no corrections), and a corrected scan (suffix GB) using various scanner settings.
What intrigues me is that the scanner is able to automatically correct colour casts and improve contrast across a wide variety of slides. i.e. I have tested slides from the 1960s through to 2007 on various stock (Fuji, Anscochrome, Kodachrome, Ilfochrome). In almost all cases, and without changing the scan settings, images come up as good as the two uploaded images. The only setting I sometimes need to alter is what I call the "gamma", for slides that are underexposed or have a lot of dark regions where detail should be visible (and the reverse for overexposed slides).
Maybe I am not using PS to its full potential, so I am hoping that someone can have a go at editing the "natural" scans to see how close they can get to the corrected scans from the scanner – and then explain how they did it.
I am astounded at what the software inside this scanner can do with images. I thought PS was the be-all and end-all for images, but in my hands, PS comes in second and I'd like to know how to improve its performance.
Thanks in advance for any input.
    Notes
    1. I purposely choose challenging slides for testing. They either have a large contrast range with visible detail in the highlights and shadows; or colour casts; or bright saturated colours.
    2. When testing, I compare all scanned images as seen on my computer screen with the original slide on a hand-held light box viewed through a loupe. For example, all colours in the image called Slide Scan 15 GB, even the metallic-looking sheen of the raincoats, appear as a close match to the original slide. The only significant colour variation is in the foreground rocks (which are a grey-brown colour in the slide), and the sky (which is a slightly darker blue in the slide). This slide is, maybe, 1/2 stop underexposed which explains the saturated colours and the dark "natural" scan.
    3. The scanner spends a significant amount of time applying corrections. An 18 MB image (2000 dpi) might take 30 seconds to scan, then another minute for the corrections to be applied.

    Welcome to the forums elinhjulstrom,
I saw your post about the scan quality issue you are having with your Deskjet F2180 on Mavericks. I would like to share my ideas with you that might help.
    Try:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system (This will delete all printers)
    Repair disk permissions
Re-add the printer (not the AirPrint driver)
    Try the scan again
If there is still an issue, check out this link and use another method to scan:

  • ACR/Canon D5 Colour Balance - nasty pinkish skin tones

    I use macbook pro, 2.33GHz/3GB 667MHz RAM with CS3 and ACR 4.3.1. I shoot Canon D5.
When I shoot RAW, I get this strange pinkish look to the skin tones that I can't seem to correct. I've experimented with colour balance and hue, and the HSL and camera calibration tools, but not happy yet.
Apologies if this is a basic issue, but would love some advice.
    Thanks.

I think that is a standard catch-all message but it really is a poor show that a simple download page is so often unavailable.
Just part of the new look Adobe. It really is a pity there's no serious competition yet, but if they keep going downhill at the present rate there will be!

  • Bridge 2.1.1.9 problems with Nikon D300 NEF files

I am getting a few Raw files from my Nikon D300 that will appear properly in Bridge, but the majority either don't show a preview at all or are very pixelated in appearance. The ones that do appear fine can be opened in ACR by right clicking and selecting "open in camera raw". However, the others that don't appear properly don't even show the option to open in camera raw. Yet the files are okay, because I can then open them from within Photoshop and process the files like that. The other odd behavior is that if I right click the thumbnail and rename the file then the thumbnail preview suddenly appears properly. Lastly, the pixel dimensions show incorrectly until the file is renamed.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with Photoshop CS3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This has been very frustrating because initially it appears that the file may be corrupt.
    Thanks!

This might not be helpful as I do not know why but .. I have a D300, and while Bridge is its usual flakey self, it has worked fine with the file formats. I tried all the combinations of compression and 12/14 bit and bridge sees them.
I do have cache weirdness, where it seems to reprocess them repeatedly, as though it is forgetful, but it does process and resolve them.
I've experimented with the "high quality previews" on and off, and when off the quality is definitely lower. Secondly if it is processing (or reprocessing) its cache, I see weirdness in the display where it may not display the quality preview either for a very long time, or not at all. But generally I've had no luck getting bridge to be usable while it processes its cache for a directory, I just let it finish and then use it.
However none of these flaky issues have been D300 specific, and been using it for a couple months now, and also with a D80 from my wife, no difference.

  • White Balance and Color are off!!! NEF D80

I was unable to get my images to appear as I shot them. I shoot with a Nikon D80 and shoot with a Vivid setting. Now after shooting a wedding of more than 1500 images I have to find a way to color correct them all. I have attempted the downgrade to the previous version, unsuccessful. I have forwarded on my comments to apple and find that this issue effects tens of thousands of photos. As a MFA student at a major university, and studying color management and workflow, I feel I need to look elsewhere for file management as iPhoto is not able to do the job and the fact that it affects my entire library system of photos... simply unacceptable. I have always found the discussion groups extremely helpful, but this issue has effected so many of us and is such a huge integral part of the photographic process that I need to look to other programs to effectively handle my color management.
    Disappointing.
    Daryn

You might look atMedia Expression as a DAM (digital asset management) application for your work. It's the M$ version of iView MediaPro which MS bought out. It is a professional DAM application. There's also Aperture, Bridge and Lightroom. You can learn more about these from professional photographers at the DAM forum: http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php
iPhoto is an entry level DAM application geared more for the home photographer.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Conflict with Nikon D800 and CS6

I have been having an issue with files from my D800 when opening them in Photoshop CS6. I should note that this issue has never been a problem with any other camera that I have owned and used with CS6 (D3200, D7000, D80, Kodak Pro SLR N, Hasselblad H3D).
When attempting to open a number of files, ONLY from the D800, I seem to be limited to 10 or 11 files max. Once it loads that quantity I get an error message that it is out of resources. I had chalked it up to the tif files that I typically work with being 16-bit files at a little over 200MB each just being too large to open in any higher quantity.
Last evening I shot a graduation party for a friend and had inadvertently set the camera to shoot "basic" (lowest possible quality) jpg's at a file size of about 3MB each (still 7830 X 4912px). When I tried to load them into photoshop to do some dust clean-up and a few minor tweaks I was surprised to find that it still would only open 10 files before giving me the same error message.
Has anyone else had this issue? If so, I would appreciate hearing how you may have adjusted settings in either the camera or in CS6 to resolve this issue. Again, it has never been an issue with any other camera I have used, and the Hassy is 39MP so file size shouldn't be the problem. It seems to be something in conflict between photoshop and files from that specific camera. To further elaborate and head off the next question, yes, this seems to happen with other D800's as well as I have rented a couple of others while this one was at Nikon for warranty repair and those cameras had the same issue with CS6.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

  • Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300

Dear All! Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300. Some of the images are completely ruined. I am sure Adobe must be aware of this problem. What could be done? Is there a solution? Many thanks for your help. Regards, Stanislav

You want "something different" but this "something different" is quite hard to define.
I want a result which reflects the result on the camera. Have the feeling the display
of the D800 is not the greatest, at least (not only the color issue which is often discussed)
but also the exposure. Often I think I would need to compensate it, but then afterwards
on the computer the non corrected version looks most of the time better.
I think its interesting to see how allergic people react when the word jpeg comes up.
This is also just a rendered result, just by the camera. There are many options in my cam.
I like the vivid setting with some modifications. And that gives me a result I like.
And if I like the result, why shall I spend way more time to replicate it?
I do not talk about that I would want the jpeg, I only say that what I get color wise out of the
box is how I would like to look at it. I still want the capability to fix for example exposure  in image,
but I want the base the version I got from the jpeg view (or how the Nikon raw software could do).
On Lightroom I did not manage to have a profile that looked as appealing to me.
It also consumes way more time in my workflow to fix all pictures manually and results might differ.
To work on an image you need a starting point, I do not say the jpeg look is always perfect and
what I want all the time, but most of the time it is.
You say yourself you use profiles. So why should there not be a profile which automatically adjusts to the camera settings.
Its so frustrating to see a look which you like (the preview image when the pic is first accessed) and
then Lightroom switches to its own rendering which is flat and which I do not like.
For me its clearly something Adobe and/or Nikon should fix, like the mentioned "auto correct to preview look",
Nikon profiles/settings/raw-details in Lightroom or for example a Nikon import module.

  • Correcting White Balance with no white in shot

Does anyone have any tips for correcting white balance when the footage has no white objects to act as a reference? This was the classic mistake of shooting outdoors with an indoor setting. We were rushing to utilise a gap in the rain!
Also, is there any way to tell Premiere how to correct WB via a sort of colour matching, by pointing it towards a correctly white balanced still of the scene?
    Thanks
    Davyd

This is a really tricky thing. There's a lot of ways to approach it. I had similar problems with a WB correction mismatch between presets on my 7D and 70D. No white in either shot.
I exported a few frames in to PS first to get a rough idea with what I was dealing with.
Use the Info window to check something grey.
Alternately, if there is nothing grey, you can use skin tone patches. This is a common tool used by skin retouchers in PS. Grab a small sample or two from the desired skin tones, either from a 5x5 grab with the eyedropper or just grabbing a small section with the lasso tool and Gaussian Blurring that to heck and back. Once you get a bit of a palette of skin tones you like, you can use that as a reference for your work with the Fast Color Corrector.
To be honest, I feel the FCC is a little underpowered and I wish I had my AAVC 6 Channel HSL tool from Vegas when color correcting.
As a Photoshop geek, I am a little uncomfortable with the video color correction toolset.
To export a frame, click on the viewing panel and hit Ctrl-Shift-E.
Try opening the frames in Adobe Camera Raw and you can get some temp and tint values that can also help you with your Prem Pro toolset.
Remember to watch out for channel clipping when making dramatic changes in WB.
