Correcting footage shot on auto-everything camera

Hi,
I searched under several keywords but couldn't find any posts relating to my problems.
I have some colour video footage shot outdoors on a camera that has no manual controls whatsoever.
Can anyone recommend a filter or other FCP technique (or any other software) to help me bring up the under-exposed footage and bring down the over-exposed parts to make a more uniform final product? The fluctuations happen pretty rapidly and I have 1.5 hours of footage so something automatic would be really helpful. Also the colour shifts slightly throughout the footage (also sometimes rapidly), but not as badly as the exposure. Any sugestions for solutions to the colour issue?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Tim

Get out the manual and read up on the 3 way color correction filter. Pretty simple to use for basic exposure issues and color balance. Not really automatic but remember that automatic was what caused the problem in the first place.
One method of changing cc settings as the footage changes is to apply the filter to a clip and then cut the clip where the changes occur. Select each segment and correct for exposure and balance, then add cross dissolves between the segments.

  • Mixing Footage shot on Wide Screen Camera with Non

    Dear All
Firstly, thanks for your help and apologies for posting perhaps an amature question on this forum.
I'm trying to create a sequence which is using footage which was shot on two cameras. One wide screen, and one normal. As you can imagine, when it flips to the wide screen footage there are the black marks top and bottom. Question is, can I confert the wide screen footage to standard?
    Many thanks

Use the same tool I recommended to this guy, the DVCPRO HD FRAMERATE CONVERTER:

  • I have footage shot on a p2 camera, why won't all of the clips transfer when using Log and Transfer?

Only about 60% of the clips transferred over or was shown in the Log and Transfer window.

Offload the cards...back them up.  That is priority #1.  Do that first...then return the camera.  Then try mucking about with this.
Back up the ENTIRE card structure.

  • How do you prepare FCP for footage shot on HD 1080i x 720?

    Hi,
I have HD footage shot on a JVC camera 1080i x 720 that was saved to Quicklime on a DVD disc. I dragged and dropped the footage onto the timeline and, of course, the image doesn't know if it wants to look like 16:9 of 4:3.
I switched anamorphic on and off but that only increased the warp look.
    1. Are there settings that need to be set before dropping the footage on the timeline?
    2. Are there tutorials on this subject?
    I'm using OS X 10.4.11 Mac 5
    Thanks for your time.

    No, I am not sure.
And the footage is a FCP file and not QuickTime as I originally thought. My bad
This is what I was told by the person that gave me the DVD. I did tell her to talk to the videographer and ask him various questions...what frame rate and aspect ratio was the footage shot at.
I'm still waiting for her response.
But I can not seem to get a normal visual with the footage I have as it appears on the timeline. Shouldn't I still be able to control or remedy that without any other information?
    Thanks for your time.

    Shane's Stock Answer #2:
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL PAL MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or PAL monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
And the PipePro Studio is a capture card:

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Hey Gurus I've just shot a seminar, three cameras, Cannon's reasonably new XA20HD's. File format 1920X1080 MP4 17mbs 25 frames. Am running PremProCS6. I import the files into Prem, they come in ok but will not display. Got a yellow bar and a yellow Media Pending screen. What the? Have to cut this stuff soon! Wont even import into Media Encoder. Says there are no usable streams in the media! Just saw a podcast title about stress in the editing business. Better listen to the one! Any help would be most appreciated. J.

Copy ALL contents of SD card to a folder on edit hard drive. not just video clips, everything. Then in Premiere, import using Media Browser (tab at lower left of Premiere screen). This usually does the trick. There is metadata contained in the SD card files that is needed, not just the video clips alone.

  • Best way to log footage shot on P2 Cards?

What is the best way to send footage shot on P2 cards to an offsite location for logging and transcribing? Any suggestions on converting the MXF files to MOV or other formats without having to buy a $600 program would be appreciated.

Import into FCP. String out on a timeline. Add the TIMECODE READER to all the clips so the loggers can SEE the timecode. Output to DVD via a capture card to a DVD Recorder.
    Or...
Import into FCP. String out on a timeline. Export a reference movie. Take into Compressor, add the TIMECODE READER in the FILTERS area, encode for DVD.
    Or...
Purchase Proxymill from www.imagineproducts.com. Have it make low res quicktime movies with burned in code of all the footage. Burn those files to a data DVD. Mind you, this means that every start/stop of the camera will be a separate file...just as they appear in FCP. But this is quick, runs in the background, and doesn't tie up an edit station.

  • I have material shot on a new camera in 16x9.  When I import it into FCPX the media is "squished" into 4x3.  How can I get it to look right?

    I have material shot on a new camera.  It's a Panasonic AG-HPX250EJ.
According to the clip properties of the media on the camera the footage was shot 16x9 at a frame rate of 50i
    The format is DV25_420
The problem is that when I connect the camera to the iMac via a USB cable and attempt to import the media into FCPX (I'm running version 10.0.1) it displays as 4x3.
    What am I doing wrong?
Needless to say I have a deadline looming for the edit and I'm rather tearing my hair out.

If problem persists after importing via FW
Select the clips in the event browser and in the inspector select INFO.
Ensure that the View bottom Left is set to SETTINGS.
You should be able to change the way FCPX interprets the clips via Anamorphic Override.

  • Capturing 3CCD footage using single chip minidv camera

    Question:
Has anyone captured footage shot with a pro 3CCD camera using a less expensive single chip mini DV camera? I do a LOT more capturing than actual filming and would like to cut down on wear to my good camera. I'm thinking there should be no loss in quality since the info is there on the tape from when it was filmed, and the cheaper camera's single chip never comes into play anyway. Is this right?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Gene

it could have no chip you're only using the camera as a vtr tho I'd wager the more expensive transports will hold up better. as long as the transport and electronics will play back the format you are shooting it'll work fine. take a test tape from your camera to best buy or whatever and make sure it'll play what you shoot

  • Can FCP 7 Edit Motion JPEG 1280x720 Shot On A Compact Camera?

I may have to edit some footage shot on a Panasonic FX60 compact camera.
All I know about the format is that it is Motion JPEG 1280x720 30fps. (It also shoots several smaller frame sizes).
Has FCP 7 got settings to handle this material . . . . I have looked but can't find any?
If not, is there some workaround maybe using Streamclip?

You might be able to make a custom preset for this media. Motion JPEG can be tricky because there are a lot of proprietary forms of it using custom data rates. You'll also want to check if the camera shoots 30fps, or if that's just a silly euphemism for 29.97fps. The other thing you'll want to consider is what you plan to do with later for delivery. Being in a PAL country the frame rate is not very helpful. You may be better off converting it to ProRes, but you'll have to figure out what you want to do with the frame rate.

  • Bigger difference between original and corrected footage than in Fcp?

I have tried asking this on the color forum, but have been very unsuccessful, maybe someone here knows why?
Why is it that when Im color correcting In COLOR and enable and disable the grading I get a bigger difference between the original and corrected footage than when I send it back to final cut and compare the result of the cc with the original footage.
In Final cut sometimes it looks almost the same as the original but when Im in Color the difference is always bigger?
When I send it back to FCP its like I get 80 or 85% percent of what I had in color.
    Any ideas???

Maybe if you had read what I wrote to you you would have noticed me saying that this happens independent of infrastructure. I tried several different set ups it happens in all of them
Im telling you its not the setup but here goes, the last one I worked on was a mac pro, inked through Fiber Jet SAN with 14TB of usable storage. fully integrated control surface giving DaVinci type ease of operation and control of multiple parameters simultaneously.
latest eCinema 23" LCD HD Reference Monitor.
Again i tried different configurations (Blackmagic, AJA,) and different monitors
Funny thing I have the same exact problem on my simple Macbook Pro.
I first thought set up, but it wasent
I tought it could be the codecs but it wasent. (or maybe it is the xd cam footage)
Now Im wondering if these two softwares manage color and the color space in a different way?

  • How do I import Canon HD footage shot @ 30 fps into FCP?

Greetings all -- have Canon HD footage shot at 30 fps, not realizing Sony equipment can't "read" it and when I tried hooking the camera directly up to the computer to import the footage into FCP, FCP does not recognize the camera (No Communication). Anyone who can help with what settings I should use, etc.? I would be most grateful! Thank you....

Use HDV FireWire Basic as a device control setting in FCP.. might also help to read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407

  • Frame Rate Issue With Footage Shot on HVX

I just shot something using the HVX and the 100Gb Firestore. The assistant cameraman set the firestore to make quicktime files to be brought into Final Cut. We shot most of our footage at high frame rates. When we watched already shot files through the camera's LCD screen, things appear in slow motion. However, when I bring the quicktime files into Final Cut, they play at normal speed. How do I convert the frame rate to what we shot at? Is there some import tool that does this automatically?

If you previously transferred the tone to iTunes, you can sync it to the iPhone again.
If you don't see the ringtone in iTunes, you can contact the iTunes Store using Express Lane.
