Correcting Over-Exposure

I have some footage which shows mild to moderate over-exposure. What is the best way to correct for this? Is there an effect which acts as a type of limiter, keeping luminance values below a user-defined threshold?
Thanks.

The problem is, given the limited luminance space in video, once you get to white it just fills everything with the same colour because that's the ceiling. Everything that would be brighter just gets clamped to white. This means you lose the fine detail that you would otherwise get if you just wound the iris down in the camera during shooting. Because that space is all the same colour/brightness when you change the levels of the white it just drags the whole slab of white down to grey rather than reintroduce the fine detail. All you can do, as Harm has said, is to take the edge off the highlights so it's not quite so harsh.
Good luck. Let us know how you go.

  • Over exposure downloading from Nikon D300 to lightroom 2.3

Following upgrade to Lightroom 2.3 when images are downloaded from my Nikon D300 (raw or jpeg) they are all overexposed after quickly appearing in preview.  How do I correct this.  Is this a camera or software problem
    David Neal

I had the same problem with a D700.
Applying the Standard profile will correct the colors but not exposure.
Another thing to check is that you have not unable Advanced D-Light on your camera. Automode is the worst case because you don't even know how much over exposure is set!
This camera option is a tricky one: it overexpose your photo and make a built in camera process to recover details in the over/under exposed zones.
LR is not able to read this information (proprietary info in the NEF raw file) so the photo is over-exposed.
One way is to use the exposure LR cursor (-0.25 can simulate a light ADL..) but you will never have the same photo because Nikon processing is different and specific for each over/under exposed zones: sometime using the LR exposure brush is necessary on this zones (darken a sky for example).
Antoher thing is to desactive the Nikon ADL. You will then have nearly the same picture between LR Raw and your embedded Jpeg, you only need to  apply the Standard or Neutral LR profil to correct the colors.
Then, if you want to recover some details in the over/under exposed zones, you  can add a LR exposure brush on these zones. The good thing is that you control manually what Nikon ADL do automatically...

  • Nikon D700 Over exposure issue

After shooting some outdoor shots last week, I found most all of the shots as about 1/3 to a full stop over exposed on my Nikon D700.  I did some research and everyone seems to point to the camera.  As a fairly recent LR convert, I went back to Nikon Capture NX2 to see if I found the same over exposure, and DID NOT.  I hate to jump to conclusions, but it seems like LR is having problems compared to Capture.
I am interested if anyone else has done the same test and found the same results.  I LOVE LR and used it a lot recently for concert performance work as well as portrait work, but these bright sunlight shots just seemed too much for LR.
    Thanks!

I suspect your problem is due to tone curve mismatches. Let's say you are shooting some people shots and in-camera you are using the Portrait picture control.
    1) When you review your photo in the LCD and look at the histogram, the JPG (yes, even if you shot RAW) displayed there uses the tone curve (and other settings, like sharpening, hue, saturation, etc.) in that Picture Control. Add White Balance (WB) into that mix.
    2) Similarly, when you review your RAW file in either ViewNX2 or Capture NX2, the software reads the raw data *and* the Picture Control and WB information to render the image and corresponding histogram you see in the application.
Now, if you move over to Lightroom, the Adobe default camera profile will likely (most assuredly, actually) use a different tone curve and color profile. The result? A different histogram that will show either over or under-exposure when compared to what you saw in-camera or in the NX2 software, depending on the particular mismatch.
The solution? Either use one of the provided Nikon-like profiles (for instance, my LR 3.4 has Portrait), or create your own to match the Nikon's built-in (or even if you had it, your custom) Picture Control. Keep an eye on White Balance, too, as the incorrect WB can push or pull your histogram. For instance, an overly warm WB can clip your reds, when a corrected WB wouldn't.
After years using ViewNX2, exclusively (plus PSP X2 for final editing), I've just (this weekend!) switched to a LR3-CS5 workflow. Part of what kept me away from Adobe products for so long was the reluctance to give up Nikon software's "full insight" into the in-camera settings. In the end, I decided that this histogram I see in my camera is ficticious, anyway, a by-product of one possible interpretation of the RAW data. Perhaps Nikon is better qualified to interpret that RAW data, but based on the quality and robustness of their software, who knows?
Anyway, long story short: match your tone curve and WB, and you should get similar results. My early experimentation with D700 and D7000 photos this weekend, when I did a couple of quick cross-checks of what ViewNX2 gave me vs. LR3 with the Portrait control/profile indicates my results are reasonably close. As with all things, YMMV.

  • Does any1 hav issues with not being able to send pic from the camera roll. I've already had issues with over exposure that the new update fixed but it left me with this issue.

Since getting my iPhone 5 I've had camera issues. To start with it was over exposure, the camera was flashing too early and leaving me with dark pictures. After a failed reset I visited the apple store, where they told me it was a known problem and apple were working on a update to fix the issue and it was just a
waiting game. Once the update was available I did it immediately and the problem seemed to be fixed. I've now noticed that from the camera roll I carnt send a picture to mms. It gives me the option but the screen completely freezes after I've chosen it. The only way to access my camera roll again is to completely close the camera roll down and reopen it. The strange thing it it will let me send it as an email and upload taught to Facebook etc just not as an mms. The other strange thing is if I go to msgs and add a photo I'm successful but if I try to edit the photo I want to send 1st then I get the same issue as the camera roll. I also have issues with the shutter taking ages to open. Is anyone else havin these issue before I go back to the apple shop. A complete reset hasn't worked

  • FX Factory filters over exposure on FCP

    Friends
I'm having problems using FX Factory's plugins with FCP... When I applied filters as Core Glow, the image is over exposuring (the white becomes too white, the black is not so black...).
I believe that it is some configuration on my FCP, because the over exposure only happens when I apply the filters using the FCP installed on my iMAC... When I use the FX Factory's filters with the FCP installed on my MacBook Pro, it does not happen.
An example, if I apply the filter on my Mac Book Pro, render it, and I open the project on my iMac it looks perfect... But if I have to render it again using the iMac, the same project, no changes on the settings, the image becomes over exposure, too bright.
By the way, both Macs has FCP 6.0.4 and FX Factorys 2.0.2 installed.
    Could someone help me?
    Thanks a lot.

  • How to correct over modulation in Final Cut Pro

I recently filmed one of my friends who was performing magic tricks in front of a live audience. I put on a wireless mic on him and recorded it directly into my camcorder. During the recording, the audio seemed slightly over-modulated but it didn't appear too bad.
However, when I returned home and began the editing process, I noticed that the over modulation of his voice as well as the crowd's laughter became really apparent. I tried using the 'Apply Normalization Gain' feature to the audio track but it merely made the entire track softer.
What other ways can I correct this to make it sound normal?

Have a look at The Levelator
It won't magically "fix" clipped audio (over modulation) but it will allow you to easily balance your otherwise fluctuating levels.

  • How can I correct the exposure on a face in photoshop

This image is a nightmare. I need to adjsut the exposure on the face but can't get it to look natural. I have tried Select colour range and have played with the levels but nothing looks right. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, blown is blown, and there is nothing there to correct.  The best I can suggest is to make a new layer, and using a fully soft, low opacity brush, sample skin tones from an area away from the blown pixels, and stroke ny stroke, build up colour.  Finish by using some Gaussian blur to further soften the edges - note that this will make the layer more transparent, but you can build up opacity by copying the layer.  If you do use multiple layers, put them in a Group > add a layer mask to the group > paint out the eyes using a smaller blacb brush.   Thid layer will have no texture, but you can add that by using either noise, or Texture > grain from the filters gallery.
It's a bit more complex than that, but I am away for the weekend the moment I post this and have to dash

  • BOP is not correcting over confirmations

    Hi,
Recently we had a Sales Org change in Production and becuase of it over confirmation happend in some of the orders. When we re do ATP check manually orders are getting corrected. But BOP is not considering the over commits and proposing new commit dates.
    Thanks,

    Hi Bhramankar,
The "Rule Eval. (again)" is switched on in the BOP 'parameters check' tab page is not helpful. It is not considering main item requirement. It is considering sub line items only and doing ATP check.
In normal and by applying Rule eval no changes appear. BOP is not considering main item and just updating delivery dates.

  • Font delay in displaying correctly over the web

    Hello all,
I've made a PDF file from a PageMaker document. All fonts have embedded correctly.  When the PDF file is opened directly from my computer's hard drive it immediately displays correctly.  However, if the PDF is uploaded to my website then viewed over the web, a font with large lettering, which I am using as a title at the head of a short story, initially does not display correctly.  It seems to take two or three seconds before it "switches" from a basic, flat non-serif to the correct script font I've chosen.  Is this normal behaviour, or is there something I can do so that the font lettering displays correctly as soon as it appears on-screen?  Viewers have found this delay a bit off-putting.
    Thanks,
    Roger3

  • SX10 IS zoom photos are all white (severe over exposure?)

Hi, I've notice that when I take outdoor pictures, mostly in "Auto" mode, using a fair amount of zoom that the image take is mostly white.  This consistently occurs and is not a one-time event.  I'm assuming that the images are severely over exposed. The environment is typically mid-day sunlight. Taking a picture of the same composition at much lower magnification gives expected results.  I've been through the manual looking for different things to adjust without success.  I've reset all settings to their defaults and the problem persists.  I've tried different modes with similar results.  I've had this camera for a few years now and I haven't experienced this problem before.  Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    JakeInTexas,
When shooting outdoors in sunlight, the camera could be metering the exposure improperly because of the sunlight entering the lens at certain angles.  A good way to counter this is by attaching the lens hood that came with the camera.
If this does not help, I would like to take a look at a sample image if you could upload one to this thread.  It will greatly help us determine what else may be causing this.

  • Strange over exposure

Can anyone help with this problem because I'm really stumped!
I'm using Lightroom 5.7 on a Windows 7 laptop & not had any problems up until now but images in Develop mode show large red areas as though they are over exposed (see screen shot). The same photos have previously been fine up until now & are fine in Library mode & if viewed in any other programme. I have tried uninstalling & reinstall but this has made no difference. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Look in the top right corner of the histogram, there is a highlighted triangle which means you have selected the highlights indicator, the red areas are blown highlights. Click will turn off.

  • How to create the Over exposure wipe effect?

Films like The Secret produce a wipe effect of over exposed light emiting from the video as it transitions to the next shot. Any idea how to creat this effect?
    Thx
    Kevin

It can definitely play a factor. DVD has a little more leeway, and I've never seen an issue on my TV, but it's properly set up. For the typical viewer who probably has their brightness turned way up so they can watch TV in the afternoon with the sun shining right on the screen, the transitions will probably tear and distort.
I love the vapor across transition, but only use it for web based projects, and things I know that only I am going to be watching.

  • N95 8GB Camera Over-Exposure

Ok, so I've had my N95 a while now and I cannot take pictures with it, due to the fact that it over exposes every single picture I take. I've tried changing every setting on it and it stil won't change.
    An example is attached.
And this happens on pretty much every picture I take, to varying degrees.

If it's still that bad after the update then it's most likely a fault. Take it to a nokia care point for inspection.

  • Credit Over Exposure

    Dear Experts,
I am facing a piculair situation in Credit Control for Customer. The Credit has been set to INR 150000 for the customer, it is showing a credit over shoot of by 110 % becuase now the invoices are due for 315000. How come this has happneded? ? I see an amount In with Cash discount, if I consider that the open invoices are down below INR 150000. Where can I check this cash discount because I do not see the same in open item for customer?
What other scenarios are possible causing the over shoot of credit limit?
    Best Regards
    Vk

    Hi Vivek,
Credit check has been set at Sales order and delivery. There is no question of billing but surprisingly it has also ignored credit check at Sales order and Delivery time.
    This is what user did.
The original outstanding balance on the account (as of 12/1/09) was
$129,654 (Invoice 92487883). 2 delivery notes were created for
$147,091.20 (resulting in billing document 92490272 $77,792.40 and
92490273 $69,148.80) which caused the credit limit of $150,000 to be
exceeded. In order to allow a shipment and to override the credit
limit, the user specifically created a flooring authorization for order
30928201 line 10. This caused a delivery to be created and a
subsequent billing 92493972 for $77,792.40. The last item was an
override and we know why this delivery was created. The other 2 items
billing documents 92490272 and 92490273 should not have been created.

  • Secondary exposure correction?

Is there any way to correct spot exposure problems [ie. clipping] like you can correct secondary color with Three-Way Color Corrector?
I have a clip where a white box that reflects too much--it moves, so I need the exposure correction to move as well--like color corrections move with the Secondary Color Correction, but with exposure instead.
I just need to tone-it done some, if possible.
I tried using the Three-Way, but there isn't enough color to grab.
    Any advice? And thanks.

You can do secondary correction with the luma corrector.
